Graduated Vehicle Excise Duty

In an effort to tackle global warming, the Government
wants to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide
(CO2) from cars. Since 1 March 2001 all new cars
registered have a VED (Vehicle Excise Duty, generally
referred to as Road Fund Licence) based on fuel type
and CO2 emissions.

Understanding insurance group ratings:

The different insurance groups available range from group 1 (the lowest) to group
50 (the highest). Most family cars fall into groups 10 to 25, unless they have high
powered engines. If you have a sports car, or high risk vehicle, then the group
rating will be higher. So the lower the group rating, the less your car insurance
premium costs!

Passenger car insurance group ratings are quoted based on the new industry
standard scheme that measures vehicles on a 1-50 scale (previously 1-20). The new
scale was introduced to allow more comprehensive consideration of vehicle price,
equipment level, performance, security and replacement part costs. Adoption of the
1-50 scale will be mandatory from December 2009. Commercial vehicle ratings will
continue using the 1-20 scale until further notice.

Understanding P11D values:

P11D value is the retail price of the car
including VAT and factory deliver y (including
the VAT on that delivery), but excluding
Road Fund Licence and Vehicle First
Registration Fee.

Tax is payable on any factor y fit or dealer
fit options or accessories fitted before
customer delivery.

Tax is payable on dealer fit accessories
fitted after delivery totalling more than
£100. Tax will be payable in the tax year in
which they were fitted.

No tax is payable on telephone hands-free
kits or equipment to enable a disabled
person to use the car, or for accessories
required to enable the employee to do their
job, for example, a tow bar where
the employee has to tow a trailer on
company business.
