Hardware:
D-Link warrants its hardware products to be free from defects in workmanship and materials, under normal use and service, for the following periods measured from date of purchase from D-Link or its Authorized Reseller:

The one-year period of warranty on c omplete products applies on condition that the product's Registration Card is fille d out and returned to a D-Link office within ninety (90) days of purchase. A list of D-Link offices is provided at the back of this manual, together with a copy of the Registratio n Car d. F ailing suc h tim ely registration of purchase, the warranty period shall be limited to 90 days.
If the product proves defective within the applicable warr anty per iod, D-Link will provide repair or replacement o f the product. D-Link shall have the sole discretion whether to repair or replace, and replacement product may be new or reconditioned. Replacement product shall be of equivalent or better specifications, relative to the defective product, but need not be identical. Any product or part repaired by D-Link pursuant to this warranty shall have a warranty period of not less than 90 days, from date of such repair, irrespective of any earlier expiration of original warranty period. When D-Link provides replacement, then the defective product becomes the property of D-Link.
Warranty service may be obtained by contacting a D-Link office within the applicable warranty period, and requesting a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number. If a Registration Card fo r the product in question has not been returned to D-Link, then a proof of purchase (such as a copy of the dated purchase invoice) must be provided. If Purchaser's circumstances require special handling of warranty correction, then at the time of requesting RMA number, Purchaser may also propose special procedure as may be suitable to the case.
After an RMA number is issued, the defective product must be packaged securely in the original or other suitable shipping package to ensure that it will not be damaged in transit, and the RMA number m u st be pro minently marked on the outside of the package. The package must be mailed or otherwise shipped to D-Link with all costs of mailing/shipping/insurance prepaid; D-Link will ordinarily reimburse Pu rc h ase r fo r m ailing/ shipping/insurance expenses incurred for return of defective product in accordance with this warranty. D-Link shall never be responsible for any software, firmware, information, or memory data of Purchaser contained in, stored on, or integrated with any product returned to D-Link pursuant to this warranty.
Any package returned to D-Link without an RMA number will be rejected and shipped back to Purchaser at Pu r c haser's expense, and D-Link reserves the right in suc h a case to levy a reasonable handling charge in addition mailing or shipping costs.
Software:
Warranty service for software products may be obtained by contacting a D-Link office within the applicable warranty period. A list of D-Link offices is provided at the back of this manual, together with a copy of the Registration Card. If a Registration Card for the product in question has not been returned to a D-Link office, then a proof of purchase (such as a copy of the dated purchase invoice) must be provided when requesting warranty service. The term "purchase" in this software warranty refers to the purchase transaction and resulting licence to use such software.
D-Link warrants that its software products will perform in substantial co nfo r mance with the applicable product documentation provided by D-Link with such software product, for a period of ninety (90) days from the date of purchase from D-Link or its Authorized Reseller. D-Link warrants the magnetic media, on which D-Link provides its software product, against failure during the same warranty period. This warranty applies to purchased software, and to replacement software provided by D-Link pursuant to this warranty, but shall not apply to any update or replaceme nt which may be provided for download via the Internet, or to any update which may otherwise be provided free of charge.
D-Link's sole obligation under this software war r anty shall be to r e place any defective software product with product which substantially conforms to D-Link's applicable product doc umentation. Purchaser assumes responsibility fo r the selection of appropriate applicatio n and system/platform software and associated refe rence materials. D-Link makes no warranty that its software products will work in combination with any har dware, or any application or system/platform software product provided by any third party, excepting only such products as are expressly represented, in D-Link's applicable product documentation as be ing c ompatible. D-Link's obligation under this warranty shall be a reasonable effort to provide compatibility, but D-Link shall have no obligation to provide compatibility when there is fault in the third-party hardware or software. For simplicity, this documentatio n uses the ter ms “Switch” ( first letter upper case) to refer to the DES-1210G Ethernet Switch, and “switch” (first letter lower case) to refer to all Ethernet switches, including the DES-1210G.

This section describes the f eatures of the Switch, as well as givin g some backgroun d informatio n about Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and switching technology.
NTRODUCTION

Fast Ethernet Technology

The growing importance of LANs and the increasing complexity of desktop computing applications are fueling the need for high performance networks. A number of high-speed LAN technologies are proposed to provide greater bandwidth and improve client/server response times. Among them, Fast Ethernet, or 100BASE-T, provides a non-disruptive, smooth evolution from 10BASE-T technology.
100Mbps Fast Ethernet is a standard specified by the IEEE 802.3 LAN committee. It is an extension of the 10Mbps Ethernet standard with the ability to transmit and receive data at 100Mbps, while maintaining the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) Ethernet protocol.

Gigabit Ethernet Technology

Gigabit Ethernet is an extension of IEEE 802.3 Ethernet utilizing the same packet structure, format, and support for CSMA/CD protocol, full duplex, flow control, and management objects, but with a tenfold increase in theoretical throughput over 100Mbps Fast Ethernet and a one hundred-fold increase over 10Mbps Ethernet. Since it is compatible with all 10Mbps and 100Mbps Ethernet environme nts, Gigabit Ethernet provides a straightfo rward upgrade withou t wasting a company’s exist ing investment in hardware, software, and trained personnel.
The increased speed and extra band width offe red by Gigabit Ethe rnet is essential to co ping with the network bottlenecks that frequently develop as computers and their busses get faster and more users use applications that generate more traffic. Upgrading key components, such as your backbone and servers to Gigabit Ethernet can greatly improve network response times as well as significantly speed up the traffic between your subnetworks.
Gigabit Ethernet enables fast optical fiber connections to support video conferencing, complex imaging, and similar data-intensive applications. Likewise, since data transfers occur 10 time s faster than Fast Ethernet, servers outfitted with Gigabit Ethernet NIC’s are able to perform 10 times the number of operations in the same amount of time.
In addition, the phenomenal bandwidth delivered by Gigabit Ethernet is the most cost-effective method to take advantage of today and tomorrow’s rapidly improving switching and routing internetworking technologies.

Switching Technology

Another key development pushing the limits of Ethernet technology is in the field of switching technology. A switch bridges Ethernet packets at the MAC address level of the Ethernet protocol transmitting among connected Ethernet or fast Ethernet LAN segments.
Switching is a cost-effective way of increasing the total network capacity available to users on a local area network. A switch increases capacity and decreases network loading by making it possible for a local area network to be divided into different segments which don’t compete with each other for network transmission capacity, giving a decreased load on each.
The switch acts as a high-speed selective bridge between the individual segments. Traffic that needs to go from one segment to another (from one port to another) is automatically forwarded by the switch, without interfering with any other segments (ports). This allows the total network capacity to be multiplied, while still maintaining the same network cabling and adapter cards.
For Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet networks, a switch is an effective way of eliminating problems of chaining hubs beyond the “two-repeater limit.” A switch can be used to split parts of the network into different collision domains, for example, making it possible to expand your Fast Ethernet network beyond the 205 meter network diameter limit for 100BASE-TX networks. Switches supporting both traditional 10Mbps Ethernet and 100Mbps Fast Ethernet are also ideal for bridging between existing 10Mbps networks and new 100Mbps networks.
Switching LAN technology is a marked improvement over the previous generation of network bridges, which were characterized by higher latencies. Routers have also been used to segment local area networks, but the cost of a router and the setup and maintenance required make routers relatively impractical. Today’s switches are an ideal solution to most kinds of local area network congestion problems.

DES-1210G 10/100/1000 Mbps Stand-alone Switch

General Description of Switch

The DES-1210G Switch module is equipped with eight ports providing dedicated 10 or 100 Mbps bandwidth. These ports can be used for connecting PCs, servers, and hubs. The eight dual speed ports use standard twisted pair cabling and are ideal for segmenting networks into small, connected subnets. Each port can support up to 200 Mbps of throughput in full-duplex mode. In addition, the Switch is equipped with two Gigabit fiber optic uplink ports enabling convenient access to a server or network backbone for all the clients served by the Switch. This stand-alone Switch enables the network to use some of the most demanding multimedia and imaging applications concurrently with other user applications without creating bottlenecks. The built-in console interface can be used to configure the Switch’s settings for Priority Queuing, VLAN, and Port Trunk Groups, Port Monitoring and Port Speed.

This chapter provides unpacking and setup information for the DES-1210G Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Switch.
NPACKING AND SETUP

Unpacking

Open the shipping carton of the switch and carefully unpack its contents. The carton should contain the following items :
One DES-1210G Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Switch
One AC power cord
This User’s Guide CD-ROM
Four rubber feet with adhesive backing
RS-232 Console Cable
If any item is found missing or damaged, please contact your local D-Link Reseller for replacement.

Setup

The site where you install the DES-1210G Switch may greatly affect its performance. Please follow these guidelines for setting up the switch.
Install the switch on a sturdy, level surface that can support at least 3 kg of weight. Do not place heavy objects on the switch.
The power outlet should be within 1.82 meters (6 feet) of the switch.
Visually inspect the power cord and see that it is fully secured to the AC power port.
Make sure that there is proper heat dissipation from and adequate ventilation around the switch. Leave at least 10 cm of space at the front and rear of the switch for ventilation.
Install the switch in a fairly cool and dry place. See Appendix A, Technical Specifications, for the acceptable temperature an d humidity operating ranges.
Install the switch in a site free from strong electromagnetic field generators (such as motors), vibration, dust, and direct exposure to sunlight.
When installing the switch on a level surface, attach the rubber feet to the bottom of the device. The rubber feet cushion the switch, protect the casing from scratches and prevent it from scratching other surfaces.
