RD-8X-N4X Operators Manual
1. Description
The Model RD-8X is a read only remote display unit designed to operate with Modbus™ RS485 sensors or control systems from Detcon. The unit displays real time channel information on the backlit LCD. Display information includes the channel number, the gas type, and the gas concentration. The unit will also display the current Alarm/Fault status via the front panel LED indicators.
Housed in a NEMA 4 water proof enclosure, the Model RD-8X has a built in power supply, providing multiple power options. 115/230VAC 50/60Hz or 11.5-30VDC can provide power to the unit.

3.2 Power and I/O Connections
Power and I/O connections are made on back of the PCB. Plug-in male connectors are provided for input wiring terminations. This connector style provides for quick disconnect convenience during replacement or servicing (refer to Figure 3).
3.2.1 AC Power
Connect the 115 or 230VAC input wiring to the terminals at P1labeled “VAC IN” (refer to Figure 3).
3.2.2 DC Power
For optional DC power input, connect 11.5-30VDC to the terminals at P2, labeled “VDC IN” (refer to Figure 3). This input can be used for primary power or back-up power in the event of a VAC power failure.
3.2.3 Serial Input Connection
The serial RS-485 connection to sensors or control systems should be terminated at P4 Labeled “COM2” the RS-485 Master port of the remote display (refer to Figure 3).

3.2.4 Relay Outputs
The Model RD-8X provides four single pole double throw (SPDT) Form C contact relays. The relay terminals (P6 through P9) are labeled “FAULT”, “ALM3”, “ALM2”, and “ALM1” (refer to Figure 3). The relays can be used to control annunciating devices or as signal input/outputs to other control devices. Connections are labeled COM (common), NO (normally open) and NC (normally closed). The current ratings of the relay contacts are 5A @ 30VDC, and 5A @ 250VAC, these ratings should not be exceeded.
Note: ALM3 is not used when the unit is used with the 10B control units.
3.3 Start-up
The power switch is located on the outside of the enclosure, on the right side of the unit, and is marked as “ON” and “OFF”. To apply power to the unit, turn the switch to the “ON” position.
NOTE: Before applying power, check to make sure that all the wiring connections and external devices are installed correctly.
NOTE: Applying power with devices hooked up incorrectly may cause damage to the equipment.
When power is applied to the unit, the unit will display the firmware revision and properties for several seconds. For this controller that information should be:
DETCON INC COM 1 MODBUS SLAVE MODBUS CONTROLLER VERSION XX.XXX COM 2 MODBUS MASTER PCWH X.XXX
After unit initialization, the unit will begin normal operation. If the unit has been properly setup, the unit will display the current status of the devices that it is connected to.
4. System Operation
4.1 Front Panel
The Main Display is a 1¼”x 6” backlit LCD that has 4 lines by 40 characters. In normal operation the channel’s information will be shown as “01> XXXX ppm GAS” will be displayed. If any channel is in any gas alarm condition, “01> XXXX IN ALARM ” will be displayed. If any gas channels are in Fault, they will display “01> XXXX IN FAULT ”. If any channels are not communicating with their appropriate 12B controller, then they will display as “01> XXXX COMM ERROR ”.
Four LED indicators on the front panel show alarm and fault relay status. The LED’s represent ALM 1 (yellow), ALM 2 (amber), ALM 3 (red) and FAULT (blue) and are labeled respectively.
The RD-8X user interface consists of four function keys on the front panel. These keys are labeled: “PROG”, “u” (Up Arrow), “v” (Down Arrow), and “ENTER”. The “ENTER” key doubles as a “RESET/ACK” key, but “RESET/ACK” has no functionality in this firmware revision.
NOTE: The Remote Display automatically times out of Menu Mode and returns to the Main Display after 15 seconds of inactivity. While in Menu Mode, there are no updates to gas readings.
