Alcatel-lucent MEDIA RESOURCE FUNCTION DATASHEET

Alcatel-Lucent Media Resource Function
R EL E A S E 7.1
The Alcatel-Lucent Media Resource Function (MRF) is a comprehensive software product, fulfilling the role of a powerful media server in packet-switched networks and allowing quick deployment of a range of value-added services.
The Alcatel-Lucent MRF can be used as either a standalone node to provide basic announcement services, or as a node for an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Long Term Evolution (LTE), CDMA, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), next-generationnetwork (NGN) or WiMax network. As the latter type of node, the product plays a key role in many media-related services:
• Playing multilingual fixed and variable audio announcements
• Playing video announcements
• Collecting dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) for user interaction
• Providing audio and video conferencing, selecting the video stream, with mixing of audio streams and coders/decoders (CODECs) transcoding
• Performing legal interception, thanks to its media-stream duplication capability
The use of a full-software mediaprocessing technology provides a very competitive solution with reduced costs and reduced time-to-market for feature improvements because no digital signal processors (DSPs) are used. The Alcatel-Lucent MRF is also a rich application-protocol solution that supports all major interfaces, including Network Announcement protocol (NETANN), Media Server Control Markup Language (MSCML), Media Session Markup Language (MSML), Alcatel-Lucent Media Session Markup Language AMSML and voice eXtensible Markup Language (vXML) script.
Key features
• Playback of prerecorded fixed and variable announcements, such as phone number, prices, date, time, duration and integer numbers, including in a multilingual environment
• Textual announcements played using optional speech synthesis, such as text-to-speech (TTS) technology for all supported audio CODECs
• Playback of video announcements
• Recording of audio and video announcements
• DTMF detection: collection of user interactions through:
¬ Out-band user-plane DTMF
detection
¬ Out-band control-plane DTMF
detection
¬ In-band DTMF detection for
CODEC G711 a-law or µ-law and in video sessions
• Conferencing:
¬ Channel mixing for audio confer-
ence accepts any of the supported CODECs; the necessary transcoding is transparent to the application
¬ Video conferencing (MSCML):
accepts any of the supported CODECs; the necessary transcoding is transparent to the application, the loudest speaker video stream is broadcasted to all conferees
¬ Recording
• Lawful interception
• CODEC transcoding: conference, announcement playback
• Collection of user interactions through:
¬ DTMF detection: out-band
and in-band
¬ Optional speech-recognition
technology
Key benefits
• Supports multiple languages (more than 80) and variable announcements
• Supports a variety of CODECs; the software-based architecture also makes it simpler and less expensive to introduce a new CODEC than with a DSP-based architecture
• Delivers multiservices: platform can interact with several services simultaneously, generating economyof-scale savings
• Fully integrates with Alcatel-Lucent solutions
• Supports multiple application protocols, facilitating integration with third-party services
• Provides multinetworking: using the Alcatel-Lucent MRF and the Alcatel-Lucent Specialized Resource Point (SRP), customers can broadcast announcements over TDM and IP networks with a single operation
• Offers high scalability: seamless scalability ensures efficient capacity expansions
• Delivers carrier-grade services: provides quality voice and video services with highest availability
• Supports Quality of Service (QoS): differentiated services code point (DSCP) marking to differentiate the flow according to RFC 4594
