CHAPTER 1

Introducing the ZyXEL Device

1.1 Overview

The ZyXEL Device is a single-mode optical fiber Integrated Access Device (IAD) that combines a router with Voice over IP (VoIP) communication cap abilities to allow you to use a traditional analog telephone to make Internet calls. It implements egress qeueuing and policy routing to manage outgoing traffic. It is also a complete security solution with a robust firewall that blocks outside traffic from entering the network.
Please refer to the following description of the product name format.
• “H” denotes an integrated 4-port hu b (s wi tc h) .
• “N” denotes wireless functionality, including 802.11n mode. There is an embedded mini-PCI module for IEEE 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN connectivity. All wireless features documented in this user’s guide refer to the “W” models only.
• “U” denotes a USB port used to share files via a USB memory stick or a USB hard drive.
See the chapter on product specifications for a full list of features.

1.2 Applications for the ZyXEL Device

Here are some example uses for which the ZyXEL Device is well suited.
1.2.1 Internet Access
Your ZyXEL Device provides shared Internet access by connecting the WAN fiber port to the broadband modem, router or directly to the fiber optic outlet in your house. You can then use the QoS, Firewall and VoIP functions on the ZyXEL Device.
You can also connect the LAN port of your ZyXEL Device to a broadband mode m or router to access the Internet via an Ethernet connection.

Chapter 1 Introducing the ZyXEL Device
Computers can connect to the ZyXEL Device’s LAN ports (or wirelessly).

You can also configure firewall on the ZyXEL Device for secure Internet access. When the firewall is on, all inc o m ing traffic from the Internet to your network is blocked unless it is initia t e d fr om your network. This means that probes from the outside to your network are not allowed, but you can safely browse the Internet and download files.
Use egress queuing and policy routing to efficiently manage traffic on your network by giving priority to certain types of serv i ce s, traffic and/or to p a rt ic ular computers. For example, you could make sure that the ZyXEL Device gives voice over Internet calls high priority, and/or limit bandwidth devoted to excessive file downloading.
1.2.2 VoIP Features
You can register up to 2 SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) accounts and use the ZyXEL Device to make and receive VoIP telephone calls:
Figure 2 ZyXEL Device’s VoIP Application
The ZyXEL Device sends your call to a VoIP service provider’s SIP server which forwards your calls to either VoIP or PSTN phones.

1.2.3 ZyXEL Device’s USB Support
Use the built-in USB 2.0 port to share files via a USB memory stick or a USB hard drive (A). The files stored in the USB drives are made available on your local area network.
Note: As of writing, the file sharing feature supports USB drives that are in FAT32 file
format.

1.2.4 FTU2000 Support
Use the ZyXEL FTU2000 together with the ZyXEL Device to view cable television (CATV) channels on TV, while enjoying Internet and voice services.
Note: The ZyXEL Device does not come with the FTU2000 unit. Cont act you r service
provider for more information about this device.
1.2.4.1 FTU2000 Overview
The FTU2000 is a plug-and-play Fiber Termination Unit that provides CATV service to users through fiber optic cables.
The following figure shows how you can set up the FTU2000 at home. Using a coaxial cable, connect the FTU2000 to the television. Use a fiber optic cable to connect the FTU2000 to a fiber optic outlet in your home.

1.2.4.2 ZyXEL Device and FTU2000 Application
The ZyXEL Device can work with the FTU2000 so that both devices can share one fiber outlet and one power source.
Note: Refer to the Quick Start Guide of the FTU2000 for steps on how to connect the
two devices.
The figure below shows how the ZyXEL Device and the FTU2000 provide Internet services (including VoIP, IPTV and so on) as well as cable TV to the home.
Figure 5 ZyXEL Device and FTU2000 Setup
The ZyXEL Device and the FTU2000 have to be powered on for both devices to work due to the following:
• the ZyXEL Device supplies power to the FTU2000 and has to be turned on for the FTU2000 to function.
• the fiber optic cable of the ZyXEL Device passes through the F T U2000.

1.3 Ways to Manage the ZyXEL Device

Use any of the following methods to manage the ZyXEL Device.
• Web Configur ator. This is recommended for everyday management of the ZyXEL Device using a (supported) web browser.
• Command Line Interface. Line commands are mostly used for troubleshooting by service engineers.
• FTP for firmware upgrades and configuration backup/restore.

1.4 Good Habits for Managing the ZyXEL Device

Do the following things regularly to make the ZyXEL Device more secure and to manage the ZyXEL Device more effectively.
• Change the password. Use a password that’s not easy to guess and that consists of different types of characters, such as numbers and letters.
• Write down the password and put it in a safe place.
• Back up the configuration (and make sure you know how to restore it). Restoring an earlier working configuration may be useful if the device becomes unstable or even crashes. If you forget y our password, you will hav e to reset the ZyXEL Device to its factory default settings . If yo u backed up an earlier configuration file, you would not have to totally re-configure the ZyXEL Device. You could simply restore your last configuration.

1.6 The RESET Button

If you forget your password or cannot access the web configurator, you will need to use the RESET button at the back of the device to reload the factory-default configuration file. This means that you will lose all configurations that you had previously and the passwords will be reset to the defaults.
Chapter 1 Introducing the ZyXEL Device
1 Make sure the POWER LED is on (not blinking).
2 To set the device back to the factory default settings, press the RESET button for
ten seconds or until the POWER LED begins to blink and then release it. When the POWER LED begins to blink, the defaults have been restored and the device
restarts.

1.7 The WPS/WLAN Button

Use the WPS/WLAN button on the top of the device to turn the wireless LAN off or on. You can also use it to activate WPS in order to quickly set up a wireless network with strong security. Make sure the POWER LED is on (not blinking) before using the WLAN button.
•Press the WLAN button for one second and release it. The WLAN LED should change from on to off or vice versa.
• Press the WLAN button for five seconds to turn on WPS. See Section 7.5 on
page 117 for more on using WPS to configure your wireless clients.
