Safety
• To prevent electric shock and/or damage to the refractor, be sure to plug the instrument into a grounded outlet.
• Do not overload your AC outlet.
• Do not use a damaged cord or plug. Electrical shock or fire hazard may result. Call Customer Service for a replacement.
• Do not connect or disconnect the power cord or communication cables while the power is on.
• Always replace fuses with the same type and rating. Failure to do so may create a risk of fire.
• Do not use accessories that are not designed for this instrument. Use only those parts recommended by Humphrey Systems to achieve optimum performance and safety. Electrical accessories such as printer and monitor should comply with appropriate safety standards such as the IEC 601-1, CSA 601.1, and UL 2061.
• The instrument has ventilation openings at the bottom to allow the release of heat generated during operation. If these openings are blocked, built-up heat can cause failures, which may result in a fire hazard.
• Although the Acuitus is designed for continuous operation, it should be turned off if it is not being used for an extended period.
• This instrument is not anesthetic-proof. Do not use in the presence of flammable anesthetic since this may create a risk of explosion.
• The ACUITUS is classified as Type B, Class I equipment.
• The ACUITUS is an ORDINARY EQUIPMENT.
• The Acuitus complies with UL, CSA, and IEC safety requirements. It also complies with the requirements of the European medical device directive 93/42/EEC and is labeled with the “CE mark.”
As with many electrical instruments, the Humphrey ACUITUS refractors generate radio frequency energy and may cause interference to radio, television reception, and other instruments. If so, the following measures may be necessary.
1. Plug the instrument into a different outlet so that the instrument and the receiving device are on different branch circuits.
2. Reorient the TV or radio antenna.
3. Reorient the instrument with respect to the TV or the radio.
4. Move the receiving device and the instrument away from each other.
5. Use only shielded communication cables.
The following symbols appear on the instrument:
Symbol located on power switch indicates that power is OFF.
Symbol located on power switch indicates that power is ON
Indicates the presence of uninsulated high voltage inside the instrument. Do not remove the instrument cover or parts.

Installing the Acuitus

The Acuitus is easy to install.
1. Attach the power cord.
2. Plug the power cord into a grounded outlet and turn on the power switch.
Note: The floppy drive is to be used only when installing official Humphrey Acuitus software upgrades. It is not for patient data files or other software.
If You Move the Instrument
Always lock the optics head in place before you move the instrument. If you move it without locking the optics head, you could put it out of calibration. To lock the optics head, rotate the joystick counter clockwise until the head is fully lowered and locked in place.
Once the instrument has been moved and you are ready to use it, unlock and raise the optics head by rotating the joystick clockwise. Then check the instrument’s calibration following the procedure described on page 17.
Important: Always pick up the Acuitus by the base. Never pick it up by the headrest or screen arm. Doing so could damage important components of the instrument.

The Acuitus has four buttons with permanent functions to the right of the screen. These are Help/Setup, the Up Arrow and Down Arrow, and Print.
The five buttons underneath the screen are called soft buttons because they change function according to the icon that appears on the screen above them. When no icon appears above a button, the button has no function for that particular screen. (See the icon glossary on page 20.)
System Setup
Before you use the Acuitus for the first time, it is necessary to select the software settings you want to use for refraction, the printouts, and other features of the refractor.
Turn on the refractor and press the Help/Setup button that is just to the right of the screen. The help screen will appear. The help screen
Model 5000 does not have keratometry, CL Base Curve and Auto/Manual options.
Then press the soft button below the Setup icon to bring up the first setup screen where you can view or change the system settings.
1.Use the Up Arrow and Down Arrow buttons to scroll through the options in each field.
The last shown option will become the new default.
2. Use the button below the Next icon to move from one setup option to another.
3. Press the button below the Page Down icon to reach the second setup screen where you can set the time and date and select printout options.

4. The Return icon takes you out of Setup. The last shown settings will become the new

The first system setup screen (Model 5010 and 5015)
Note: Model 5000 does not have Keratometry, Rounding (K) and PK readings options
Rounding Choose 0.12 or 0.25 for rounding refraction results. The default is 0.25 diopters.
Vertex Choose a vertex setting of 0, 10.5, 12.0, 13.5, 15.0 or 16.5 mm. The default is 13.5.
Language The available languages are English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian,
Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish.
Eye Monitor The position of the eye monitor on the refraction screen can alternate from right to left,
depending on the eye being refracted, Alternate, or remain fixed on the left side if the operator prefers, Stationary.
A third position of the eye monitor, Full Screen, allows a larger image of the eye to be displayed upon target detection for refraction. The default is Full Screen.
Brightness Adjust screen brightness from minimum to maximum, 1 to 5. The default is 5.
Keratometry Choose mm or dK. The default is dK (Model 5010 and 5015).
Rounding (K) Choose 0.12 or 0.25 for rounding keratometry results. The default is 0.25 diopters. (Model 5010 and 5015)
Peripheral Choose to measure the right (Rt) and left (Lt) peripheral K Readings points; or the right, left, superior, and inferior points (All).
The default is All. (Model 5010 and 5015)

When you have made your selections, press the button under the Page Down icon to get to the second setup screen where you can select printer and time and date options.

Note: Model 5000 does not have Print all PK data option.
Set Time Press the Up Arrow and Down Arrow buttons until the correct time appears. Next will take you am/pm, which you can set with the arrow buttons.
Set Date Press the Up Arrow and Down Arrow buttons until you reach the correct date.
Time (Date) Choose the time and date format you would like to use for your records: d = day,
m = month, y = year. You may also use a 24-hour clock, or the am/pm format.
Internal The refractor’s internal printer can be turned On or Off with this option.
The default is On.
Paper Type Select Standard or Label (adhesive paper). The default is Standard.
Print Name/Date
Yes tells the instrument to print a place for you to write the patient’s name on the
refraction printout. Both models print the date automatically. No omits name and date on the printout. The default is Yes.
Print Multi-Ref
If you select Yes, the Acuitus will print the results of all of the multiple refractive measurements it takes and print the average. If you select No, the Acuitus only prints the average of its measurements.
Print Graphic
The graphic depicts the focal length of the eye and the position of the image relative to the retina in a myopic, hyperopic, and/or astigmatic eye, depending on the patient’s refraction. Select Yes or No.
When you have finished, you can press Page Up to go back to the first setup screen or press Return. When you press Return, the last shown settings will become the new defaults, and the Acuitus will take you to the start refraction screen.

Positioning the Patient
Seat the patient comfortably. Raise or lower the power table until the Acuitus forehead rest is lined up with the patient’s forehead. Ask the patient to place his or her forehead firmly and comfortably against the forehead rest while the chin rests on the chin rest. Raise or lower the chin rest until the patient’s eye is at the same level as the eye position marker on the forehead rest
Important: For reasons of hygiene, be sure to wipe the forehead and chin rest with an alcohol swap after each patient.
Refraction: Model 5000

Taking refractive measurements with the Acuitus 5000 is easy.
1. Press the button under the icon to choose plus or minus cylinder. Your selection will appear in bold type.
2. Seat the patient at the instrument as described above. Instruct the patient to look at the basket of the hot air balloon.
3. Align the eye in the eye monitor as described on page 7.
4. As soon as the eye is aligned, the Acuitus will automatically begin to take multiple refractive measurements. Press the button on the top of the joystick to freeze the results.
5. Repeat the process for the other eye. Results for both eyes are shown on the same screen.
6. Press the Print button.
Note: The Acuitus is designed to operate in most lighting conditions. Subdued lighting is recommended for difficult patients or those with very small pupils. The use of mydriatics may make refraction possible with patients who cannot be measured otherwise because of very small pupils or cloudy media.

Use the joystick to align the optics head.
• Rotating the joystick clockwise or counter clockwise raises and lowers the optics head.
• Pushing the joystick left or right moves the optics head left or right.
• Pulling or pushing the joystick moves the optics head forward and backward.

Clearing Results to Re-refract
The last refraction for one or both eyes remains in the instrument’s memory until another refraction is initiated or the five-minute time-out limit is passed. There are two ways to clear refraction data from the display immediately if you would like to re-refract an eye.
1. Reposition the optics head. If you have measured both eyes, moving the optics head
back to the first eye will clear data for that eye and allow you to take another measurement. Results for the second eye will remain on the display unless the optics head is moved to that eye a second time.
2. Print results. Pressing the Print button prints out the examination results, clears the
patient’s data from the refractor, and prepares the instrument for the next patient.
Turning off the power also erases all stored refraction data.

The Model 5000 Printout
The Acuitus does not store a patient’s measurements; you must print them out after each examination. You may print after each eye is measured, but most practitioners prefer to have the results for both eyes on a single printout.
The refraction results from the Acuitus 5000 can be printed out in the complete format or with some or all options suppressed. Use the setup screens to select or suppress options (see page 5). You may also choose to print results either on the standard paper or on an adhesive label that may be affixed to the patient’s chart.

Refraction: Model 5010 and 5015
To take a refractive measurement with the Acuitus 5010 and 5015 make your choices on the refraction screen and follow the steps below. Your choices will appear in bold type on the screen.
To turn an option off completely — if you do not want to perform keratometry, for example — press the button until all of the choices appear in gray, not bold, type.
1. Select Automatic or Manual operation.
2. Press the button under the icon to select plus or minus cylinder.
3. Make sure refraction (Ref) is selected, not contact lens measurement (CL).
4. Press the button to select CK (central keratometry), both CK and PK (peripheral keratometry), or neither. Keratometry may be done as part of a refractive examination or separately. (See page 13 and 14 for more detailed instructions on keratometry.)
5. Seat the patient at the instrument as described on page 6.
6. Align the eye in the eye monitor by the method described on page 11. In the automatic
mode, the Acuitus 5010 and 5015 will refract the eye and display the results as soon as the eye is aligned. If you have chosen the manual mode, press the button on the top of the joystick.
7. Move the optics head to the second eye and repeat the process.
8. Press the Print button if in Manual Mode.

Align the Eye: Model 5010 and 5015
The Model 5010 and 5015 guides you with a green centering ring as you use the joystick to align the optics head.
• Rotating the joystick right or left raises and lowers the optics head.
• Pushing the joystick left or right moves the optics head left or right.
• Pulling or pushing the joystick moves the optics head forward and backward.
Instruct the patient to look at the basket of the hot air balloon. Locate the right eye and use the joystick to center the target within the patient’s pupil. Move in or out following the prompt cue at the top of the display until “Focused” prompt appears. Then move (rotate) the joystick up and down, as well as right and left in order to center the target within the patient’s pupil.
At this point, the target will turn green and automatically acquire a reading (Auto mode). If in Manual Mode, there will be a “Press Joystick” prompt on the screen.
Aligning the eye, Model 5010 and 5015
Automatic or Manual Mode
In the automatic mode, the Acuitus 5010/5015 will refract the eye. After measurement, the result is displayed. (See fig. page 10.) If you are using the manual mode, the Acuitus 5010/5015 will begin to take multiple refractive measurements as soon as the eye is aligned. Press the button on the top of the joystick when prompted in order to freeze the results and display them on the screen.

The Model 5010/5015 Printout

Central Keratometry Values
The apical K value is derived from the central and peripheral keratometry measurements and indicates the radius of curvature at the apex of the cornea.
Shape. A positive shape value means the cornea is flatter peripherally than centrally. A negative shape value means the cornea is flatter centrally than peripherally.

Keratometry: Model 5010 / 5015
Keratometry may be done as part of a refractive examination or separately. To perform keratometry only, push the Ref/CL button until neither choice is shown in bold type, indicating that both options are turned off.
1. Press the button to select CK (central keratometry), or both CK and PK (peripheral keratometry).
2. Select Automatic or Manual operation. The automatic mode is appropriate for central keratometry only. The Acuitus 5010 / 5015 will switch modes as it moves from central to peripheral keratometry if you begin in the automatic mode.
3. Seat the patient at the instrument as described on page 6.
4. For central keratometry, align the eye in the eye monitor as described on page 11. When you are performing peripheral keratometry, the prompts on the screen will tell you when to ask the patient to look at the fixation lights.
5. Move the optics head to the second eye and repeat the procedure.
6. Press the Print button.

5010/5015 Keratometry Screen (Refraction Disabled)
Central Keratometry
If you are operating the Acuitus 5010/5015 in the automatic mode, it will take central keratometry measurements automatically and display the results as soon as the eye is aligned. When you follow refraction with central keratometry, the instrument will refract the eye and proceed automatically to keratometry. If you are using the manual mode, press the button on the joystick as soon as the eye is aligned.
Peripheral Keratometry
Because the patient must be asked to look at a series of four fixation targets, peripheral keratometry cannot be performed in the automatic mode. If you are using the automatic mode, the Acuitus 5010/5015 switches to the manual mode when it is time to take the peripheral measurements.
The screen prompt will tell you when to ask the patient to look at the first fixation target. Tell the patient to continue facing straight ahead and look at the first light. When the patient is looking at the target, push the button on the top of the joystick. The prompt will then tell you to ask the patient to look at the second target, and so on until all four measurements are complete.
Keratometry Printout Options
If both refraction and keratometry have been performed, the keratometry results appear on the printout after the refraction results with, again, the results for the right eye first (see the sample printout on page 12). If keratometry has been performed alone, the printout will show keratometry only.

To measure a contact lens base curve:
1.Press the button under the Ref/CL icon to select CL.
2.Attach the test eye assembly to the forehead rest by inserting the tabs into the slots in the forehead rest and pushing down.
3.Put a drop of saline solution in the contact lens holder cup and position the lens on the cup with the concave side facing outward. Be sure that there are no air bubbles or water on the inside surface and that the lens is centered in the holder.
4.Fit the holder cup on the test eye assembly
5.Align the lens in the monitor until it is centered in the green circle.
6.Press Print to obtain a record of the results.

Maintenance
Replacing the Printer Paper The Printer Not Ready message appears on the screen when the paper supply is completely empty. To avoid the risk of losing patient data, it is better to change the paper roll when the red, end-of-roll, line appears along the edge of the printout.
If you run out of paper while you are printing patient data, you will be able to restart the printer after you have put in new paper. No patient data will be lost.
If you replace one type of paper with another, standard with label, for example, be sure to go back to the second setup screen (Press Help, then Setup, then Page Down) and change the paper type in the printer options.
Note: It is not necessary to turn off the power to replace the paper. If you do, you will lose any patient data that is currently stored in the instrument.
To replace the paper
1. Push the printer lever on the side of the instrument (see page 1) to the unlocked position and slide the printer straight out of its housing.
2. Push the paper feed lever on the side of the printer forward to release pressure on the platen.

3. Remove the cover on the paper tray and lift out the empty paper roll.
4. Put in a new paper roll, orienting it so that the paper feeds up from the bottom. Feed the paper through the slot until it comes out the front of the printer.
5. Relock (push back) the paper feed lever.

6. Gently push the printer back into place until it stops. Then return the printer lever on the side of the instrument to the lock position. Push the printer all the way in.
7. Press the Print button to test.
Checking Calibration
The calibration on the Humphrey Acuitus is very stable. However, calibration can be affected if the instrument is moved with the optics head unlocked, or if it is bumped or tipped. It is a good idea to check calibration once a week and after every time the instrument is moved.
Your Acuitus Accessory Kit includes a “test eye” piece that simulates a human eye with known measurements. To use this test eye piece to check the your refractor’s calibration:
1. Note the reference values marked on the test eye piece.
2. Attach the test eye assembly to the forehead rest by inserting the tabs into the slots on the forehead rest and pushing down.
3. Align the test eye in the monitor by moving the joystick as you do for a refraction.
4. Press the button on the top of the joystick to take a measurement if you are using manual mode. In automatic mode, the Acuitus will measure the test eye and display the results as soon as the test eye is aligned.

5. Check to make sure that the measured values correspond with those marked on the test eye piece.

If the measured values do not match those of the test eye, check the alignment in the fixation window and take a second measurement. You should also make sure that the lens in the patient fixation window is not dirty (see below). If the instrument still seems to be out of calibration, call Humphrey Systems Customer Service.
Cleaning the Patient Fixation Window
Check the fixation window regularly for dust and smudges because a dirty lens can cause erroneous readings. Unusually high sphere or cylinder readings can be the result of dirt on the patient fixation window.
Note: The lens in the patient fixation window has a special coating that is easily scratched. Take care in cleaning it.
To clean the window, first use a camel hair brush to gently remove the dust from the lens. Then dampen a lintless camera lens tissue with a camera lens cleaning solution and gently wipe the lens surfaces to remove smudges or fingerprints.
Cleaning the Screen and Outer Casing
Wipe the screen with a clean, dry cloth. Do not use any cleaner. Clean dirt spots and dust from the outer casing with a clean cloth and mild detergent or isopropyl alcohol. Never spray detergent or alcohol directly on the casing.
For reasons of hygiene, be sure to wipe the forehead rest and the chin rest with an alcohol swap after each patient.
Changing the Fuses
Two fuses are located in the fuse box on the side of the instrument just above the on/off switch and the power cord attachment. Your Acuitus accessory kit contains two replacement fuses of the correct type and rating. To change the fuses: Turn the instrument off and unplug the power cord. Use a small screwdriver to gently pry open the cover to expose the fuse holders (marked with an arrow). Slide out each fuse holder and check the filament for breakage. Remove the defective fuse.
Insert a new fuse in the fuse holder. Slide the fuse holders back into the housing with the arrow pointing to the right. Push the cover up and in until it snaps in place. Plug in the power cord.
Caution: Use replacement fuses of the correct type and rating (T 2.0 slow blow, 250V). Failure to do so could damage the instrument.

Error Messages
Printer not ready Make sure there is paper in the printer and the paper feed lever is in the
lock position. Make sure the printer is pushed all the way into the body of the instrument and is locked in position.
Unable to refract Reposition the patient, make sure the eye is aligned, and try again.
Unable to initialize target motor
Turn the instrument off and on again. Try to take a measurement. If the problem persists, call Humphrey Systems Customer Service.
Unable to initialize refractor motor
Turn the instrument off and on again. Try to take a measurement. If the problem persists, call Humphrey Systems Customer Service.
Troubleshooting

Check to see that the type of paper in the printer is the type specified (Label or Standard). (Press Help, Setup, Page Down to reach Paper Type on the second setup screen.)
Unusually high This can be caused by a dirty patient fixation sphere and cylinder window. Clean the window carefully following the readings instructions on page 18.
Refraction errors Check the instrument’s calibration following the with multiple patients instructions on page 17.

Warranty
For one year from the date of delivery to the original purchaser, Seller warrants its Acuitus (the “instrument”) to be free from defects in material and workmanship. In the event of failure, Seller’s obligation is limited to repairing or replacing on an exchange basis parts which have been promptly reported by the Purchaser during the warranty period as being defective and are so found by Seller upon inspection. The procedure for warranty claims shall be as follows: when the Purchaser believes the instrument defective, the Purchaser shall promptly report the defect to the Seller. The Seller shall repair the Acuitus in the Seller’s repair depot. All shipping costs will be paid by the Seller, unless the Purchaser’s Acuitus is found upon inspection not to be eligible for repair under this warranty, in which case the Purchaser shall be responsible for one-half of the shipping costs. The warranty covers all parts, labor, shipping and expenses for the warranty period (country specific).
If the instrument is determined to be ineligible for repair under the warranty, Seller will so notify Purchaser, and repairs desired by Purchaser will be performed at Seller’s normal rates. All replaced parts become the property of the Seller. A loaner instrument may be available while Purchaser’s instrument is being repaired. All shipping costs for loaner instruments to be borne by Purchaser.
The warranty does not cover consumable items such as operating supplies, paper, ribbons, bulbs, and manuals, and will not apply if repair or parts replacement is required because of accident, neglect, misuse, transportation, or causes other than ordinary use, or supplies that do not meet the proper operating specifications of the Seller. The warranty does not apply if software unapproved by the Seller is used in the instrument. This warranty does not apply to any articles that have been repaired or altered except by the Seller.
Every reasonable effort has been made to ensure that the product manuals and promotional materials accurately describe the instrument’s specifications and capabilities at the time of publication. However, because of ongoing improvements and product updates, the Seller cannot guarantee the accuracy of printed materials after the date of publication and disclaims liability for changes, errors, and omissions. Seller shall in no event be liable to Purchaser for loss of profits, loss of use or consequential damages caused by the Purchaser’s failure to fulfill the Purchaser’s responsibilities as to proper installation, use, management and supervision of the instrument. This warranty shall apply only to the original Purchaser and shall not, in any way, be transferable or assignable.
The foregoing warranty is in lieu of all warranties, express or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranty of merchantability or warranty of fitness for a particular purpose. (All Specifications are subject to change without notice.)
Service Contract
A Warranty Extension Agreement (Service Contract) is available after the one-year warranty period expires and may be purchased at any time. Sécurité
• Brancher le réfractomètre à une prise de courant reliée à la terre pour éviter toute électrocution et/ou endommagement de l’instrument.
• Ne pas dépasser la capacité de la prise de courant.
• Ne pas utiliser un cordon électrique ou une prise endommagée sous risque de causer une électrocution ou un incendie. Appeler le service après vente pour un remplacement.
• Ne pas brancher ou débrancher le câble d’alimentation ou de communication lorsque l’instrument est sous tension.
• Toujours utiliser des fusibles de rechange de même type et de même calibre pour éviter un risque d’incendie.
• Ne pas utiliser des accessoires qui n’ont pas été conçus pour cet instrument. Utiliser uniquement les pièces recommandées par Humphrey Systems pour obtenir les meilleures performances en toute sécurité. Les accessoires électriques comme l’imprimante et le moniteur doivent être conformes aux normes de sécurité telles que IEC 601-1, CSA 601.1 et UL 2061.
