Main Features

Your PortaSound has the following features and functions:

• Authentic instrument sounds with 100 AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) Voices,
utilizing digital recordings of actual instruments.

• 15 Songs, for listening enjoyment or for pbying along with when using the Minus

Taking Care of Your

PortaSound

Your PortaSound will give you years of playing pleasure, provided you
follow the simple precautions given below.

• Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or other sources of heat. Never leave it
inside a car where it can get very hot. Also avoid highly humid or dusty places.

• Do not use your PortaSound close to television sets, radios or similar equipment
since this may cause interference noise in the other appliance.

• Protect your PortaSound from strong impact. Be careful not to drop it or place
heavy objects on it. Avoid applying excessive force to the controls and keys.

• After use, always turn off the TOWER switch. When not using your
PortaSound for long periods, be sure to remove the batteries to avoid damage
through battery leakage,

• Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. To remove stubborn stains, use a
slightly moistened cloth. Never use alcohol, thinner, or other chemical solvents,
since they will damage the finish. Also, do not leave vinyl chloride material on the
PortaSound for a long time, since it may adhere to the exterior.

Power Requirements

Your PortaSound runs on conventional batteries (five size ”AA” 1.5-voh;
sold separately).

Inserting Batteries

Turn the instrument upside-down
and remove the battery compart
ment lid. Insert five 1.5-volt size
“AA" batteries as shown in the
illustration, making sure that the
positive and negative terminals are
properly aligned. Replace the lid.

When the Batteries Run Down

When the batteries run low and the battery voltage drops below a certain level, the
PortaSound may not sound or function properly. As soon as this happens, replace
them with a complete set of five new batteries. Never mix old and new or different
types of batteries (e.g., alkaline and manganese).

Stromversorgung

Das PortaSound kann mit handelsüblichen Batterien betrieben werden

Einlegen der Batterien

Drehen Sie das Instrument um, und
nehmen Sie den Batteriefachdeckel am
Unterboden ab. Legen Sie fünf 1,5-V­Batterien des Typs "AA” ein, und
achten Sie auf die korrekte Ausrichturrg
der Batteriepole, wie in der Abbildung
gezeigt. Setzen Sie den
Batteriefachdeckel wieder ein.

Bei schwachen Batterien

Bei schwachen Batterien und Abfallen der Batteriespannung unter einen besUmmten Wert
erzeugt das PortaSound nur einen verzerrten Klang oder zeigt sonsüge Funktionsstömngen,
Tauschen Sie alle fünf Batterien gegen neue aus, sobald dieser Zustand auftritt. Verwenden
Sie NIEMALS alte urrd neue Batterien oder verschiedene Batterietypen (z.B, Alkali- und
Manganbattericn) zusammen.

When the PortaSound is turned on or off, a
buzzing sound is tempxjrarily produced.

The sound Is distorted, or the sound drops
out, or there is noise in the signal.

Not all notes are heard when playing a
number of notes simultaneously.

The sound of the Voice changes from note

flowing into the PortaSound.

The battery power is too low. Replace the
batteries.

Too many keys are pressed at the same
time. The PortaSound is polyphonic up to a
maximum of twelve notes. (See the note

and Playing Voices in the Voice Mode”,)

Précautions — Prendre soin

du PortaSound

Le PortaSound est un excellent instrument de musique et doit être traité avec
soin pour que le plaisir de son utilisation se prolonge pendant plusieurs années.

• Ne l’exposez pas à la lumière directe du soleil, ne le conservez pas près d’une source de
chaleur ou dans une voiture si la température intérieure peut être élevée; évitez les
emplacements humides ou poussiéreux.

• N’employez pas le PortaSound près d’un récepteur de radio ou de télévision, ou de tout

Cuidado del PortaSound

• No use el PortaSourxJ cerca de televisores, radios u otros aparatos similares que

• Proteja el PortaSound contra impactos fuertes. Tenga cuidado de no dejarlo caer y
no coloque objetos pesados sobre él. No aplique fuerza excesiva a los controles y las
teclas.

• Después de utilizar el PortaSound, ponga siempre e) interruptor de alimentación
(POWER) en OFF. Cuando no vaya a utilizar el PortaSound durante mucho tiempo, quite

• Dual voices have two voices layered together ior ensemble sounds,

• Split voices have two voices. Each is played from a different range of the keyboard (F*3 and
below for the lower voice, G3 and above the upper).

• Harmony Voice (Country, Trio, Block, Duet) have an additional one-, two-, three- note harmony
added to the original monophonic voice. If several notes are played together, only the last note
played will be heard. When a Song or Jam Track does not play back, the basic key tor the
harmony is always C. When a Song or Jam Track plays back, the harmony changes according to
the chord progression of the Song or Jam Track.

• Sustain voices extend the sound by adding a natural, slow release.

• Echo voices have an echo effect that adds delayed repreats to the original voice.

• Die SUSTAIN-Sümmen verlängern den Klang und lassen ihn natürlich und langsam

ausklingen.

• Die ECHO-Stimmen schließlich bieten einen Echo-Effekt, der die ursprüngliche Stimme
mehrfach verzögert wiederholt.

are also automatically selected. Some of the Jam Track pjattems may also feature Voice
changes that coindde with changes in the chord progression.

[ Turning on the Power

Set the POWER ON/OFF switch O to ON, to turn on the power of the

PortaSound, When the power is on, the Voice mode is automatically selected
and the PIANO Voice is called up.

To conserve battery power, always turn the PortaSound off when not in use.

Selecting a Mode

Your PortaSound has two different operating modes: Voice and Song. Switch

between the two modes by pressing the VOICE/SONG Mode button O. (The

LTD of the .selected mode lights.)

In the Voice mode, you can select and play a Voice. In the Song mode, you can
select and play either a Song or a Jam Track pattern.

The PoirtaSound features 25 different instrument Voices, each of them witfi three
additional Variations. Depending on the Voice selected, the Variations apply
special harmonies, sustain or echo effects to the Voice.

Make sure that the Voice mode is selected. Press the VOICE/

To select other Voices in the same section, pre.ss the VOICE/SONG Select

button of that section rei-Xiatedly until you hear the sound of the desired

Voice, (F.ach press of the button plays a single note of the selected Voice, so

that you can "audition” the Voice.)

To select a Variation of the Voice, press the VARIATION button
{the VOICE/SONG Select button on the far right, in the VARIA
TION section).

Wählen Sie die gewünschte Stimme mit den VOICE/SONG-Wahltaaien C

Drücken Sie die Taste, die der gewün seti ten Stimmeri-Sektion entspricht. Wenn
Sie znm Beispiel die Gitarrenstimme FOLK GUITAR wählen möchten, drücken
Sie die VOICE./SONG-Wahitasten unterhalb der Sektion, die
enthält (die zweite Taste von links).

Um eine andere Stimme in derselben Sektion zu wählen, drucken Sie die VOICE/
SONG-Wahltasten der betreffenden Sektion, bis Sie den Klang der gewünschten

Adjusting the Volume

Adjust the volume of the Voice by using the VOLUME button O.

Each press of the button increa,ses the volume or decreases it. (A high-pitched

“click” indicates an increa.se, wfiile a low-pitched “click” indicates a decrease.)

To quickly set the volume to maximum (or minimum), press and hold down the
VOLUME button to step rapidly through the “clicks." (If the “click” pitch is high,
the volume is being increased toward the maximum; a low pitch means it is being
decreased toward the minimum.) When the click sound stops, the volume is at

Einstellen der Lautstärke

Sie können die Lautstärke des Stücks mit den VOLUME-Taste O einstellen.

Mit jedem Dmck auf die Taste erhötien Sie die Lautstärke oder vermindern sie, (Ein
hohes “Klicken” zeigt an, daß sie l.autstärke erhöht und ein tiefes “Klicken”, daß sie
vermindert wird.)

Um die Lautstärke rasch auf den höchsten (oder niedrigsten) Wert einzustellen, halten
Sie die VOLUME-Taste gedrückt und schalten dadurch rasch durch die “Kiiektöne".
(Wenn das “Klicken” mit lioher Frequenz erklingt, wird die Lautstärke zum
Maximalwert hin erhöht, und wenn es mit niedriger Frequenz ertönt, zum

Minimalwert.) Wenn der klickende Ton stoppt, ist die Lautstärke auf den höchsten

Choix d’un mode de fonctionnement

Deux modes de fonctionnement sont possibles: Voice et Song, Le dioix de l’un ou de
l’autre s’obtient au moyen du bouton VOICE/SONG O (La diode associée au mode
choisi s’éclaire,}

Le mode Voice vous donne la possibilité de sélectionner une sonorité et de l’employer
pxjur une exécution, le mode Song de sélectionner une œuvre ou un motif de Jam
Track et de ie,s écouter.

Le PortaSound possède 25 sonorités différentes qui chacune comporte trois variations.
Selon la sonorité choisie, les variations se traduisent par des embellissements
harmcrniques, une prolongation de la srjriorité ou un effet d’écho.

Veillez tout d’abord à sélectionner le mode Voice. Appuyez sur le

bouton VOîC^SOJVGO jusqu’à ce que la diode verte VOICE s’éclaire.
Choisissez la sonorité que vous désirez employer au moyen des

boutons de sélection VOICE/SONGO.

Appuyez sur le bouton correspondant à la section des sonorités qui vous
intéressent. Par exemple, poi*r choisir la sonorité FOLK GUITAR, appuyez sur le
bouton de sélection VOlCFySf.JNCi t{ui est placé sous la sedioti marquée “FOLK
GUI TAR’’ (le deuxième bouton en partant de la gauche}.

Pour choisir d'autres sorsorMés de la même section, appuyez sur le bouton de
sélection VOICE/SONG autant de fois qu’il est nécessaire pour que la sonorité se
fasse entendre. (Chaque pression sur ce bouton provoque l’émission d’une note,
ce qui vous permet de choisir la sonorité à Touïe.}

Pour choisir une variation de la sonorité, appuyez sur le bouton

En b modalidad VOICE, se puede seleccionar y tocar una voz. En b modalidad
SONG, se puede seleccionar y reproducir ya sea una canción o un patrón JAM
TRACK.

Cerciórese de que esté seleccionada la modalidad VOICE. Pulse el

The PortaSound Ls polyphonic up to a maximum of twelve notes

two notes can be played at a Lime from Ihe keyboard. (The amount of

siruriding notes may be even less if you play the keyboard while

[rressing one of the panel switches.) Thus, if you play too many notes at

otre time, some may not sound and/or others may be caJicelled.

Selecting and Playing Songs or
Jam Tracks in the Song Mode

A variety of Songs and special Jam Tracks have been recorded to your
PortaSound to give you a taste of what you can do with the instrument. The
Songs are generally for your listening enjoyment; however, you can also play
along with them on the keyboard. Also, by using the Minus One function, you

can “mute" the original melody and play it manually on the keyboard yourself.

The Jam Track patterns in this mode let you “jam” or play along with a variety of

dynamic rhythm styles and chord changes.

To select and play one of the Songs or Jam Tracks:

1 Make sure that the Song mode is selected. Press the VOICE/

SONG Mode button О until the red SONG LED lights.

2 Select the desired Song or Jam Track with the VOICB/SONG

Press the button corre,sponding to the appropriate section. For example, to
select the Srjng “Beautiful Dreamer,” press VOlCFySONG Select button
below the section containing “Beautiful Dreamer" (the second button from
the left).

Playlrack of tlie Song or Jam Track starts as soon as tlie button is pressed.

Select other Songs/Jam Tracks in the same section by pressing the VOICE/
SONG Select button of that secticrn repeatedly until you hear the desired
selection. (Refer also to the list “Jam Track Mode — Chord Progressions" at

Adjust the Volume of the Song or Jam Track by using the

VOLUME buttons O.

You can also adjust the playback speed with the TEMPO button O*
Each press of the button increases the tempo or decreases it.

(As with the VOLUME button, a high-pitched “click" indicates an increase,
while a low-pitched “click" indicates a decrease.)

To quickly set the tempo to maximum (or minimum), press and hold down
the TEMPO biitton to step rapidly through the “clicks. ” (If the “click” pitch is
high, the tempo is being increased toward the maximum; a low pitch means
it is being decreased toward the minimum.) When the click sound stops, the
tempo is at the maximum (or minimum). The tempo range is from 40 to

180 bpm (beats per minute), and is adjustable in steps of 20 bpm.

To stop playback, press the START/STOP button

If playback is not stopped, all Songs play back repeatedly in succession,
indefinitely, (However, if Minus One is on, only the selected Song repeatedly
plays back.) If a Jam Track pattern is selected, only the selected pattern
repeats indefinitely.

Using the Minus One Feature

Minus One, as its name implies, takes away the melody part of the Sopg,
allowing you to play that part yourself.

To start the Minus Or>e function with the selected Song, press the M/NUS ONE

button O (either before starting playback or during playback). As soon as the

MINUS ONE button is pressed, Song playback starts immediately, with the
melody part left out. You can restore the melody part by pressing the MINUS
ONE button while the Song is playing.

When used with one of the Jam Track patterns, Minus One cancels all bass and
chord accompaniment, leauirrg only the basic rhythm of the Jam Track.

aufgerioinmen, um Ihnen einen Eindmck davon zu verschaffen, was Sie alles mit dem
Instrument machen können. Die Demonstrations-Stücke im SONG-Modus sind
prinzipiell zürn Zuhören gedacht; Sie können jedocli auch selbst zu den Stöcken auf
der Tastatur spielen. Mit Hilfe der Minus-One-Funkliott können Sie den Melodie-Teil
des Stücks ausblenden (stumrnschalten), so daß Sie diesen selbst auf der Tastatur
spielen könrren. Die Jam Track Pattern dieses Modus ermögiidien es Ihnen, zu
verschiedenen dynamischen Rhythmus-Slüriditungen und Akkordwediseln zu spielen.

So wählen Sie ein Demonslrationsslück exier ein Jam Track Pattern

1 Überzeugen Sie sich davon, daß der SONG-Modus gewählt ist. Drücken

Sie die VOICE/SONG-Taste O, bis die rote SONG LED aufleuchtet.

2 Verwenden Sie die VOICE/SONG-Wahltasten O, und wählen Sie das

gewünschte Demonstrationsstück oder Jam-Track.

Drücken Sie die Taste entsprechend der betreffenden Sektion. Wenn Sie z.B. das
Demonstrations-Stück “Beautiful Dreamer" wählen möchten, drücken Sie die
VOICF./SONG-Wahltaste unter der Sektion, die “Beautiful Dreamer” enthält (die

zweite Taste von links).
Die Wiedergalre des Demonstraüoiis Stücks oder Jam Tracks beginnt, sobald die

Taste gedrückt ist. Wählen Sie ein anderes Demonstrations-Stücks/Jam Track in

derselben Sektion, indem Sie die VOli TySONG-Wahltaste der betreffenden
Sektion wiederholt drücken, bis die gewünschte Wahl ertönt. (Weitere Einzelheiten

^ Sie können auch die Wiedergabe-Geschwindigkeit mit der TEMPO-

Taste O einstellen. Jeder Druck auf diese Taste erhöht das Tempo oder

vermindert es.

(Wie bei der VOLUME-Taste bedeutet ein hohes “Klicken", daß das Tempo
erhöht und ein tiefes “Klicken”, daß es vermindert wird.)

Um das Tempo rasclr auf den höchsten (cxler niedrigsten) Wert einziistellen,
halten Sie die TEMPO-Taste gedrückt und schalten dadurch rasch durch die

“Klicktöne”. (Wenn das “Klicken” mit hoher Frequenz erklingt, wird das Tempo

zum Maximalwert hin erliöht, und wenn es mit niedriger Frequenz ertönt, zum

Minimalwert.) Wenn der klickende Ton stoppt, ist das Tempo auf den höchsten
(bzw. niedrigsten) Wert eingestellt. Das Tempo reicht von 40 bis 180
Taktschlägen pro Minute und ist in Stufen von 20 Taktschlägen pro Minute
einstellbar.

Die Minus-One-Funktion blendet, wie der Name bereits vermuten läßt, den Mekxtie-Teil des
Stücks aus, so daß Sie diesen selbst spielen könrren.

Um die Minus-One-Funktion mit dem gewählten Demons trat ions-StUck zu starten, drücken Sie
die M/NUS ONE-Taste O (entweder ehe das StUck startet oder während es abläuft). Sobald
die MINUS ONE-Taste gedrückt wurde, beginnt die Wiedergabe des Demonstrations-Stücks
sofrxt, wobei der Melodieteii ausgelassen wird. Sie können den Melodietell wieder starten,
irxiem Sie die MINUS ONE-Taste erneut drücken, während das Demcxistrations-Stück gespielt
wird.

Wenn die Minus-One-Funktion mit einern der Jam Track Ratterns eingesetzt wird, unterdrückt
Minus One alle Bass- und Akkordbegleitungen und läßt nur den Grundrhythmus des Jam
Track Pattem übrig.

autant de fois qu’il est nécessaire pour que l’œuvre, ou le motif, se fasse entendre,

Utilisation de la fonction Minus One

La fonction Minus One “efface" la ligne mélodique qu’il vous appartient alors de jouer.
Pour employer la fonction Minus-one avec l'œuvre choisie, appuyez sur le bouton

MINUS ONE O (avant ou pendant l’ècoute de l'œuvre). Dès que vous appuyez sur le
bouton MINUS ONE, la reproduction de l’œuvre commence mais la mélodie est en
supprimée. Pour écouter la mélodie pendant la reproduction, appuyez sur le bouton
MINUS ONE.

Employée avec un motif de Jam Track, cette fonction efface l'accompagnement de
basse et d’accord, ne laissant que le rythme de base du motif.

Selección y reproducción de canciones o

SONG

En el PortaSound se ha grabado una variedad de canciones y JAM l'RACKS
especiales para darle una idea de las posibilidades del instrumento. Si bien las
canciones e.stán para que Ud. disfrute escuchándolas, también puede tocar su
instrumento con ellas como música de fondo. Además, ufilizando la función Menos
Uno podrá eliminar la melodía original para tocarla Ud. mismo en su teclado. Los
patrones JAM TFIACK de este niodo le permiten tocar como en “jam sessions", con
una amplia variedad de dinámicos e.stilos rítmicas y cambios de acordes.

Para seleccionar y reprtxiucir una canción o patrón JAM TRACK;

Asegúrese de que esté seleccionada la modalidad SONG. Pulse el

botón VOICE/SONG

hasta que se ilumine el LEO rojo SONG.

2 Seleccione el número de la canúón o patrón JAM TRACK deseado por

medio de los botones selectores VOtCE/SOJVC

Pulse el botón correspondiente a la sección apropiada. Por ejemplo, para
seleccionar la canción “Beautiful Dreamer", pulse el botón selector VOICE/
SONG que está por debajo de la sección donde se encuentra dicha canción (el
segundo botón de la izquierda).

La reproducción de la canción o patrón JAM TRACK seleccionado comienza tan
pronto como se pulsa el botón. Seleccione otras canciones/patrônes dentro de la
mi.sma sección pulsando el botón selector VOICE/SONG de dicha sección
repetidamente hasta que se escuche la selección deseada, (Consulte también la
lista “Modalidad JAM TRACK, Progresiones de acordes originales”, al final del
inar.ua!.)

Si no se detiene la reproducción, todas las canciones se reproducen
continuamente en sucesión. Sin embargo, cuando está activada la función Menos
Uno, sólo se repite la canción seleccionada. Si se ha seleccionado un patrón JAM
TRACK, entonces sólo se repite dicho patrón indefinidamente.

Empleo de la función Menos Uno

Como su nombre lo indica, Menos Uno elimina la parte melódica de la canción, para
que Ud. pueda tocarla con su instrumento.

Para iniciar la función Menos Uno con la canción seleccionztda, pulse el botón MINUS
ONE O, ya sea antes o durante la reproducción de la candón. En cuanto presiona el
botón MINUS ONE, la reproducdón de la candón comienza inmediatamente, án la
parte de la melodía. Puede recuperar la parte de la melodía presionando el botón
MINUS ONE de nuevo mientras reproduce la canción.

Cuando se usa con uno de los patrones JAM TRACK, Menos Uno elimina el
acompañamiento de bajo y acordes, dejando solamente el ritmo básico del patrón.
