Thank you for choosing a Yamaha PortaSound PSS-20. To ensure that you fully
understand the many fine features provided, we urge you to follow the steps outltned in
this manual while actually trying out the instruments features.

Installing Batteries

Remove the battery compartment cover
on the bottom of the instrument and
insert four 1.5V AA-size, R-6, SUM-3 or
equivalent batteries (sold separately),
making sure that they are oriented as
directed by the polarity markings.
Replace the battery compartment cover,
ensuring that it locks firmly in place.

Caution

* When the batteries run down, replace

them with a complete set of four new
batteries. Never mix old and new

batteries.

* To prevent possible damage due to

battery leakage, remove the batteries
from the instrument If it is not to be
used for an extertded period of time.

Einlegen der Batterien

Den Batteriefachdeckel von der
Unterseite des Instruments abnehmen
und vier getrennt erhältliche 1,5 V
Batterien der Grüße AA, R-6, SlJM-3
oder entsprechend einlegen. Dabei die
Batteriepole entsprechend den
Markierungen ausrichten. Dann den
Batteriefachdeckel aufsetzen und
sicherstellen, daß er einrastet.

Vorsicht

Wenn die Batterien schwach werden,
den kompletten Batteriensatz gegen
vier neue Batterien austauschen.
Niemals alte und neue Batterien
zusammen verwenden.

Mise en place des piles

Retirez le couvercle du compartiment
des piles et placez quatre piles de
format AA, R-6, SUM-3 de 1,5 V, ou des
piles équivalentes (non fournies), en
prenant soin de les diriger selon les
indications de polarité données.
Remettez le couvercle du compartiment
fermement en place.

Attantion

* Lorsque les piles sont usées,

ir Playing Back tha Demo Tunes

6 different demo tunes are provided — try listening to them all.
Slide the power switch to the ON position.
* The selected demo tune will continue playing until you press the STOP button or select a different demo tune,
* Tempo and transpose pitch can be varied while a demo tune is playing.
* Different voices and rhythm patterns can be selected while a demo tune is playing.

A Adjusting the Volume

The volume can be adjusted in 4 steps. The volume is automatically set to the loudest level
when the POWER switch is turned ON.

To reduce the volume level, for example ...

Press die VOLUME DOWN key while holding the SELECT BLUE button.

■A Using the Melody Memory

Recording
The Melody Memory can be used to record the melody you play on the keyboard.

1. Select a rhythm pattern.

2. Hold the SELECT GREEN button and press the RECORD key. The rhythm will
start playing and the PSS-20 will be in the "record ready" mode.

3. Recording begins automatically as soon as you play the first note on the
keyboard.

4. When you finish playing, press the STOP button to the left of the panel.

A Utilisation de la mémoire de mélodie

Enregistrement
La mémoire de mélodie peut être utilisée pour enregistrer une mélodie que vous

jouez sur le davier.

1. Sélectionnez un pattern rythmique.

2. Maintenez enfoncée la touche SELECT GREEN et appuyez en même temps sur

la touche RECORD. Le rythme commence et le PSS-20 entre en mode "prêt à
l'enregistremenf*.

3. L'enregistrement commence automatiquement dès que vous jouez la première

note sur le davier,

Playback

1, Begin playback by holding the SELECT GREEN button and pressing the

PLAYBACK key.

2. Playback will end automatically as soon as the end of the recording is reached.
Playback can be stopped at any time by pressing the STOP button.

* The Melody Memory will record a maximum of 50 notes.
* Notes shorter than 1/16th notes cannot be recorded,
* Each time you make a new recording, any previously recorded material will be

erased. Recorded material is also erased if the power switch is turned OFF.

Wiedergabe

1. Um die Wiedergabe auszulösen, die Taste SELECT GREEN gedrückthalten
und die mit PLAYBACK bezeichnete weiße Taste drücken.

2. Die Wiedergabe stoppt automatisch am Ende der Aufnahme. Die Wiedergabe
kann jederzeit durch Drücken der STOP-Taste algebrochen werden.

* Der Melodiespeicher kann maximal 50 Noten fassen.
* Kürzere Noten als Sechzehntelnoten können nicht aufgezeichnet werden.
* Mit jeder neuen Aufnahme werden vorherige Aufnahmen gelöscht. Die

Aufzeichnungen werden ebenso beim Ausschalten des PSS-20 gelöscht.

Reproduction

1. Lancez la reproduction en maintenant enfoncée la touche SELECT GREEN et
en appuyant en même temps sur la touche PLAYBACK.

2. La reproduction s'arrête automatiquement à la fin de l'enregistrement,
La reproduction peut être arrêtée à tout moment en appuyant sur la touche

STOP.

* La mémoire de mélodie permet d'enregistrer un maximum de 50 notes.
* Les notes plus courtes que 11/16ème ne peuvent pas être enregistrées.
* Chaque fois que vous effectuez un nouvel enregistrement, le matériel

précédemment enregistré est effacé. L'enregistrement est également effacé
lorsque l'alimentation est coupée.

Reproducción

1, Presione la tecla PLAYBACK mientras presionado el botón SELECT

* La memoria de melodías puede registrar un máJtimo de 50 notas.

★ Ajuste del volumen

El volumen puede ajuslarae a uno de cuatro niveles distintos. AI encender la unidad, el

volumen se encuentra ajustado al máximo volumen.

^ Adjusting the Tempo (speed) of the Rhythm Pattern

The tempo of the selected rhythm pattern can be adjusted in 8 steps.

Das Tempo eines gewählten Rhythmus kann in 8 Stufen verändert werden.

The pitch can be changed in 12 semitone steps.
* The PSS-20 is automatically set to "standard" pitch when the POWER switch is turned ON.

k Using Effects

* Adding Sustain

While holding the SELECT BLUE key, press the SUSTAIN ON/OFF key. Notes played will decay gradually after you lift your fingers from the key.

Hold the SELECT BLUE button and press the SUSTAIN ON/OFF key again to turn the sustan effect OFF.

* Sustain is automatically turned OFF whenever a new voice is selected — except when the VIBES voice is selected (sustain is automatically

turned ON).

■ Adding Vibrato
lAfhile holding the SELECT BLUE key, press the VIBRATO ON/OFF key. Notes played will now have a gentle "Wavering" effect.

Hold the SELECT BLUE button and press the VIBRATO ON/OFF key again to turn the vibrato effect OFF,

* Vibrato is automatically turned OFF whenever a new voice is selected — except when the VIOLIN voice is selected (vibrato is automatically

turned ON).

k Effekte

Die Taste SELECT BLUE gedrückthalten und die mit VIBRATO ON/OFF bezeichnete Taste drücken. Angeschlage Noten scheinen nun
sanft zu vibrieren.
Um den VIBRATO-Effekt auszuschalten, die Ihste SELECT BLUE gedrückthalten und die Taste VIBRATO ON/OFF erneut drücken,

* Mit Ausnahme der Stimme VIOLIN wird der VIBRATO-EfTekt bei Abruf einer neuen Stimme ausgeschaltet. Bei Wahl von VIOLIN wird

der VIBRATO-EfTekt automatisch aktiviert.

este caso el sostenimiento es activado automáticamente.

* Mayor vibrato

Mientras mantiene la tecla SELECT BLUE presionada, presione la tecla VIBRATO ON/OFF. Esto dará a las notas un suave efecto

k Playing a Rhythm Pattern

The PSS-20 has 8 different rhythm patterns that can be selected and played as required.

Choose the rhythm paflern that best suits the type of music you intend to play.

Das PSS-20 bietet 8 verschiedene Rhythmen, die frei wählbar sind. Wählen Sie jeweils
den Rhythmus, der zum gespielten Stück am beeten paßt.

La memoria de melodías puede registrar un máximo de 50 notas.
No es posible re^strar notas de menor duración que una semicorchea.
Cada vez que realice una nueva grabación se borrará todo material

previamente grabado. El material grabado se borra también al apagar la

The PSS-20 offers 8 different voices. Try to become familiar with all the voices,
so you can select the right one whenever it is needed.

Le PSS-20 offre 8 patterns rythmiques différents qui peuvent être sélectionnés et reproduits à
volonté. Choisissez le pattern rythmique qui convient le mieux au type de musique que vous
voulez jouer.

k Reproducción de una figura rítmica

El PSS-20 tiene 8 figuras rítmicas distintas que pueden elegirse y/o reproducirse a voluntad.
Seleccione la figura rítmica más adecuada para el tipo de müsica que vaya a tocar.

k Automatic Arpeggios

The PSS-20'8 automatic arpeggio feature creates chordal arpeggios for you — all
you have to do is press a single key.

1. Select a voice.

2. Select a rhythm pattern.

3. Hold the SELECT BLUE button and press the AUTO ARPEGGIO ON/OFF key.
The selected rhythm pattern will begin playing.

4. Play the key that is the "roof of the chord you wish to play (e.g. for a C-chord
arpeggio, press a C key). The arpeggio will begin playing (Refer to fig. 1).

k Automatische Arpeggios

Die Auto-Arpr^giofunktion des PSS-20 erzeugt automatiBch Akkordarpeggios,
wenn Sie die entsprechende Gnindtontaste anschlagen.

ausgelöst.

4. Die Gnindtontaste für den zu spielenden Arpe^o-Akkord anschlagen, z.
B. die T^ste C, um ein C-Dur Arpeggio zu erzeugen. Dadurch beginnt das
Arpeggio (siehe Abb. 1).

k Arpèges automatiques

La fonction d’arpège automatique du PSS-20 crée pour vous des arpèges en
accords — la seule chose que vous ayez à faire est d'appuyer sur une touche,

1. Sélectionnez une sonorité,

2. Sélectionnez un pattern rythmique.

3. Maintenez enfoncée la touche SELECT BLUE et appuyez en môme temps sur

la touche ARPEGGIO ON/OFF. La reproduction du pattern rythmique
sélectionné commence immédiatement.

4. Jouez la note fondamatale de l’accord que vous voulez jouer (parex. pour un

arpège en accord de do, appuyez sur une touche do) (voir la Fig, 1 ).

For a minor chord, press the "roof key and any key to its left.
For example, a Cm dtord can be played by pressing the C key and any key to its
left (Refer to fig 2).

Taste links davon anschlagen. Ein Cm-Akkord wird durch Anschlägen von C

Pressing any of the three available C keys will produce a C-chord arpeggio,
but a higher-pitched arpeggio will be produced if you press a C key towards
the right of the keyboard.The same applies to minor cords.

5. When you’ve finished playing, press the STOP button to stop rhythm pattern
and arpeggio playback.

Jede der drei C-Tasten auf dem Manual löst ein C-Dur Akkord a rp«^gio
aus. Allerdings wird die Höhe des Akkordarp^gios durch die Höhe des
Grundtons beeinflußt. Je höher das C, desto höher die Akkordnoten. Dies
gilt natürlich auch für Mollakkorde.

This musical game is fun to play — and will help sharpen your ear and musical

skills! When the game is started, a short "beginning of game" sequence will play,
then the notes of the keyboard will begin to sound in a random sequence, going up
or down in semitone steps. The goal is to quickly play the key corresponding the
note that is sounding.

To start the game, press the GAME ON/OFF key while holding the SELECT

GREEN button.

To stop the game, press the STOP button.

* Notes will sometimes be played that do not have corresponding keys.
* When you "hir the right key, a "hit" tone will be heard and you receive one point.
* When you accumulate three points, the game voice will change and the game

will proceed to the next level of difficulty.

* The voices (and levels) change in the following sequence;

SAX VIOLIN - OBOE -» CLARINET -> PIANO - VIBES - BANJO ­MARIMBA.
If you go all the way to the MARIMBA level, the "win" sequence will sound and
the game will start again from the beginning.

* If you don't make three points, the "end of game" sequence will sound and the

game will end, but will then start again from Ihe first level.

Le jeu muacal est amusant à jouer — et il vous aidera à affiner votre oreille et à
perfectionner vos talents musicaux. Lorsque le jeu débute, une courte séquence
de "début de jeu” est jouée à la suite de quoi vous entendrez les notes du davier

jouées au hasard vers le haut et le bas de la gamme avec des intervalles d'un

demi-ton. Le but du jeu est de jouer rapidement la touche correspondant à la note
que vous entendez.
Pour démarrer le jeu, appuyez sur la touche GAME ON/OFF tout en maintenant
enfoncée la touche SELECT GREEN.
Pour arrêter le jeu, appuyez sur la touche STOP.

Des notes qui n'ont pas de touches correspondantes sont parfois jouées.
Chaque fois que vous appuyez sur la touche correspondant à la note, vous

entendrez un tonalité de "réussite" et vous marquez un point.
Lorsque vous avez marqué trois points, la sonorité du jeu change et le jeu passe

au niveau suivant de difficulté.

Your PortaSound will stay in excellent condition for many years if you follow these
simple rules:

1. Avoid placing the instrument in excessively humid locations,

2. Do not place the instrument in areas exposed to excessive heat — such as in
direct sunlight, near a heating appliance, or in a car exposed to direct sunlight.

3. Do not drop the instrument or subject it to strong shocks. Also avoid placing
heavy objects on top of it.

4. Do not use excessive force when operating any of the controls.

5. Do not use solvents or other chemicals to clean the instrument. It should be

cleaned gently with a soft dry (or slightly damp) cloth.
