Recommended Media for Xerox DocuColor 40/30 copier printer (EUROPE)
Revision 11, Publish Date: September, 2001
CONTENTS:
* Recommended Media List for Europe
* Appendix One - Considerations for better performance in DC40 - special media guides
* Appendix Two - DocuColor 40 APPLICATIONS GUIDE TABLE - a useful media selecting guide
* Appendix Three - Instructions for DC40 High Speed Transparency
Media recommendations made in this publication are based on qualification tests* conducted using standard test images with moderate
to heavy image area coverage. Test duration for each product/media type is based on the suggested machine monthly copy/print
volume. Test machines are maintained within specifications defined by user documentation.
* Testing environment Temperature 23 degreesC±2, Relative Humidity 50% ±5.
In the enclosed Recommended Materials List, green shaded areas marked with an "x" indicate approved product/media type
configurations. Although these configurations are recommended, reliabilty is based on your operating environment and application mix.
Machine reliability specifications may be affected by increased usage of Heavy Weight mode and Extra Heavy Weight mode. In addition,
variances in machine reliability may occur due to extended use of some media types. Your Xerox Sales or Service representative can
advise you on using Heavy Weight mode, or special application media types for long duration copy/print runs.
For specifications and a description of the various media types discussed in this publication, please refer to the Color Material Usage
Guide that comes with your machine.

Xerox makes no guarantees or warranties, either express or implied, concerning the performance, use or replacement of non-Xerox branded media or throughput
products. Customers should inquire directly of their paper distributor or manufacturer for any guarantees they may offer. When purchasing a particular media
product for the first time, customers are advised to purchase small quantities to insure that their expectations are met.
The quality of Xerox supplies is consistent from ream to ream, carton to carton, and it is backed by a Xerox 100% guarantee. The quality of non-Xerox branded
paper may vary from ream to ream or carton to carton, so for optimum performance on Xerox color equipment, use only the best--Xerox Supplies.

Considerations for better media performanceinDocuColor40
SECTION 1
SYNTHETICS
Considerations when using Synthetic media in DocuColor 40
Introduction
Customer demand is increasing for a choice of synthetic media to be used for special applications.
Requests to this laboratory have resulted in the successful evaluations of a variety of synthetic media, enabling customers to choose the
media most suitable to their application requirements.
These evaluations are on going and any new information or recommendations for considered when using synthetic media in
DocuColor 40 will be added on revision.
Please note: While we cannot guarantee the performance of any non-Xerox branded product, the synthetic media recommended all run
acceptably on Docucolor40, their special characteristics enabling customer choice for specific applications.
Hints for better SYNTHETICS performance.
1.Keep media in its wrapper until use, thereby minimising contamination (dirt, oil, ink etc.), discoloration or damage to sheets.
Acclimatise media to 'printing conditions' while it is in the wrapper - i.e. do not use immediately, media which has been in very cold or very warm conditions. Ideal ' printing conditions ' are Relative Humidity 50% Any part-paper or paper based media require up to 24 hours to condition. Some other synthetic media are very porous and moisture absorption will effect print quality and performance. If in doubt check the manufacturers guidelines.
2. Run synthetic media from the MSI (Bypass) tray. Before loading paper into the tray fan the sheets very well. This will reduce the
amount of multifeeds and misfeeds. This is especially important for synthetic media.
3. Do not load the tray to capacity. By design, some synthetic media have high electrical properties, causing sheets to stick together
and these may need to be fed single sheet only.
4. Run in Opaque mode, unless otherwise stated. This provides the optimum fusing required for synthetic media.
5. Trial a small run of your application and check output delivery.
Some synthetic media will produce blocking if allowed to stack and therefore need output to be cleared frequently every few sheets, others will stack as per heavyweight paper etc.

This section should be read in conjunction with the Recommended Media Guide for Europe
In addition you should also read the DocuColor 40 Material usage guide.
www.xerox-europe.com
Media Technology Centre-Europe DocuColor 40 Media Support
6. Some synthetic media produce heavy static, necessitating frequent output tray clearance and a standing time of up to an hour before
any Duplex printing to allow static to dissipate.
7. Some synthetic media are recommended for Simplex only because although performance is good Simplex, they show poorer print
quality or experience fusing difficulties when run 'second side'.
8. Some synthetic media will produce 'toner offset' if composite toner contrasts are high. It is recommended that toner contrasts of
original files should not exceed 240% (60% for each colour).
9. As with some papers, some synthetic media tend to exhibit print quality deterioration e.g. Mottle on areas of solid colour,
particularly cyan and green. Lower contrast levels (30 - 40%) can often lessen or eradicate this effect so careful consideration
should be given to original design and colour choices balanced with choosing the most suitable synthetic media for your
application.
10. Often applications require the synthetic media to be folded e.g. Maps, pamphlets.
Crease widths and fold flexibility vary within the synthetic media choice and there may be a side to side or fibre direction
difference to consider.
Fold position must also be considered and text and pictures arranged accordingly in the original design.
11. Choice of synthetic media will also be determined by where the finished product will be used - outdoors? Restaurant? Library?
etc. Heavy or light handling, durability, life expectancy of document (archival or throw away?), sheet colour, sheet stiffness, sheet
finish (glossy or matt), aesthetic qualities (paper or plastic feel?), and cost are all factors which must be considered before the
customer can choose the most suitable synthetic media for the application.

SECTION 2
IMAGE TRANSFER MEDIA
Considerations when using 'TheMagicTouch' Image Transfer Media in DocuColor 40
1. The only difference between 'Magic Touch' TTC3.1 and TTC3.2 is the paper base weight. Choice will depend on the application.
2. Transfer media often requires less toner adhesion than paper. Toner, which is fused but will scratch off, is acceptable, toner, which
will rub off, is not acceptable as this leads to fuser and media contamination and machine damage. Always run a few sheets of a new
design to check fusing before commencing a print run. Lower colour-contrast density levels to optimise fusing and transfer.
3. Plain Paper should be run periodically to ''clean'' the machine, absorb any excess oiling etc. (Standard practice when running Special
non-paper media)
