Operating the Welder
(refer to Figure 5)
WARNING: BE SURE TOWEAR EYE PROTEC- TION WHILE OPERATINGTHE WELDER TO AVOIDEYEINJURIES. USE CARE WHEN HAN-
DLINGTHE BLADEAFTER WELDINGTO AVOID BURNS.
1. Usingthebladecutter,cutthe bladetothe required length(View A).
2. Usingthe bladegrinder,square-offtheblade ends (View B). The bladeends need to be perpendicularto the side ofthe blade. The bladeendsmust besquaresothere is minimal gapbetweenthe endswhen clampedfor weld- ing.
3. Insert oneend of the bladeinthe left clamp (ViewC). Positionthe back edge of the blade againstthe back oftheleftclamp. Then position
the endofthe blademidway betweenthe leftand rightclamps. Tighten the leftclamp.
4. Insertthe other end ofthe blade in the right clamp. Positionthe back edgeof the blade againstthe back ofthe rightclamp. Then butt
the end ofthe bladeagainsttheother endof
blade (theblade ends needto be incontact with each other). Tighten the rightclamp.
5. Setthe clamp pressureselector switch (clock- wise rotation)to the setting requiredforthewidth
ofthe blade beingwelded(seethetable below).
9
NOTE: There will be some resistance when turning
the switch.
6. Pressandhold theweld pushbutton. When the pushbuttonispushed, therightclampmovesto

7. Release the weld push button and unclamp the left and right clamps.
8. Rotate the clamp pressure switch (clockwise) to the zero position.
9. Center the weld between the two clamps. Tighten the clamps.
10. The weld is hard and brittle and must be annealed before use. To anneal the weld, quickly depress
and release Gog)the anneal pushbutton. Repeat the depress-and-release process until you see a red glow (slightly red) from the weld area.
CAUTION: DONOT PRESSAND HOLDTHE
ANNEAL PUSHBUTTON. THEWELDWILLBE OVERHEATEDANDTHE WELDWILLFAILDUE TOTHEEXCESSIVEHEAT.
10
11. Release both blade clamps and remove the blade.
12. Check the integrity of the weld. Bend the blade to
form a radius in the blade at the point of the weld. The size of the radius should be approximately
the same as the radius of the saw drive wheel. The weld must hold and not break or crack after
forming the radius. If the weld breaks, cut away the welded area and repeat the welding/annealing process.
CAUTION: CHECKTHE BLADETOMAKE SURETHE WELDEDSECTIONISTHE SAME THICKNESSAS THE RESTOFTHEBLADE. IF
THE BLADE ISTHICKERATTHEWELD,THE BLADEGUIDES MAYBE DAMAGED.
13. Check to make sure the welded section is the same thickness as the rest of the blade. If not, grind off excess weld material using the grinder
on the welder.
Setting Blade Speed
WARNING: NEVER OPERATE THE SAW WITHOUT BLADE COVERS IN PLACE AND SECURED.
CAUTION: DONOTTURNSPEEDSETTING CRANKUNLESSTHE SAWMOTORISOPERAT- ING. THE SPEEDSETTING MECHANISMCAN BE DAMAGED.
1. Refertothe Speed and Pitchselector ontheleft side ofthesaw enclosure. Selectthe speed settingfor the materialto be cut.
2. Shiftthe gearboxto the requiredspeed setting (Model8020: high orlow)(Model8120: high, medium, orlow).
3. Start thesawusingthe start pushbutton.
4. Turn thespeedsetting cranktothe required speed. Turningthe crankto the right (clockwise) increasesspeed. Turning the crankto the left (counterclockwise)decreasesspeed.
Blade Selection
The vertical band saw is equipped with a Wilton part number 910839 saw blade that is adequate for a variety of common materials. The blade is a 10-tooth,
1/2-inch multi-purpose.
(Refer to the speed and pitch indicator on the left side of the vertical saw to select the blade and speed required for various materials.)
Page 9
A coarse blade is generally usedfor a solid steel bar but afinertooth blade used ona thin-wall tube. In
general, the bladechoiceis determined bythe thickness ofthe material;thethinnerthe material, the finer the tooth pitch.
Forvery high production on cutting of special
materials, orto cut hard-to-cut materialssuch as stainlesssteel, tool steel, ortitanium, contact your
industrial distributorfor more specific blade recom- mendations. Also, thesupplierwhoprovidesthe work piece materialshould be preparedto provideyou with very specific instructions regardingthe best blade for the materialandshapesupplied.
