The POEM NIBP Module Developer’s Kit provides the hardware, software, and accessories
required to operate a POEM NIBP Module from a Personal Computer (PC). This allows a
developer to control the POEM Module and view its NIBP and diagnostic outputs without having
to develop hardware and software interfaces to a host system. This version of the Developer’s Kit
includes:
•POEM Module Interface Box which includes:
• POEM Module and pump mounted inside for physical protection, acoustical damping
• Interface Board mounted on top for connections to power and data communications
• External NIBP hose fitting
• Interconnect ribbon cable between Module and Interface Board (PN 660-0164-XX)
•CD with POEM PC and POEM Talk Software (for PC) and manuals.
•NIBP Cuff (adult, reusable)
•NIBP Hose (10 ft.)
•RS232 Cable for connecting Interface Board to PC (PN 660-0163-XX)
•Sync Cable for connecting source for ECG synchronization signal (PN 660-0178-XX)
•9 Vdc international power adapter (with interchangeable mains plugs) operating on
nominal 100-240 Vac, 50/60 Hz (PN 503-0122-00).
•POEM NIBP Module OEM Implementation Manual

about the POEM NIBP Module and how to integrate it into a host system.

After connection, the NIBP Module is controlled from the PC using the POEM PC or POEM Talk
software program. The developer has access to all POEM Module operating modes and patient
modes.
If desired, the Developer’s Kit may be partially or totally connected to the host’s target system for
convenience in developing code in the host system. The Interface Board’s power supply inputs or
logic-level serial interface may be directly connected to the host target system.
Interface Board
All electrical connections to the POEM Module are made through the Interface Board mounted
on the top of the Interface Box. The Interface Board provides:
•Two possible power connections (only one used at a time):
• J1: 5-contact terminal strip to connect to HOST_5V, HOST_3.3V, VBUS, and GND
• J2: Barrel-style power input connector which permits powering the POEM Module
from a single, regulated or non-regulated, dc-output power adapter (or from a single
regulated dc supply)
•5V linear regulator (used only with power adapter input)
•F1: Fuse in series with VBUS
•P1: Jumpers to configure the polarity for the power adapter input
•D3: Power indicator LED lights whenever 5 V power is present
•S1: Reset switch; pressing S1 resets the POEM Module
•J4: A 0.1-inch grid pad arrangement for either soldering wires to or adding a
connector for access to all Module connections
•RS232 level translators for RXD and TXD
•J6: A female DB9 connector for direct connection to a PC’s serial port
•J5: A 1x6 connector for coupling ECG_SYNC from the host system.
The Interface Board includes safety features to protect the Interface Board and the POEM
Module from damage that might be caused by inappropriate supply voltages, polarities, or power
sequencing.
Power Requirements
Simplified power connections are described below. For additional information, refer to the POEM
NIBP Module OEM Implementation Manual.

Figure 2 - Power Adapter Configuration
A universal power adapter is included in the Developer’s Kit. It meets the requirements described
in Figure 2 (with positive center pin connector, 0.080-inch center pin, 0.215-inch diameter outer
sleeve connector). One of the included mains connectors will be appropriate for almost every
country in the world. Alternatively, a barrel-connector pigtail cable may be ordered from Welch
Allyn OEM Technologies. Contact Welch Allyn OEM Technologies for more information.
CAUTIONTo avoid possible equipment damage, do not use any ac-output power
adapter, or any dc-output power adapter that does not meet the requirements
described in these instructions.
The basic requirement at J2 is a supply that never drops below 6.0 Vdc at maximum load, never
rises above 15 Vdc when unloaded, and can deliver at least 6 W while meeting these voltage
requirements. Note that between NIBP readings, the POEM Module enters a low power sleep
mode which allows the power adapter output to rise almost to its unloaded voltage (unloaded
voltage of non-regulated power adapters will likely be 25% to 50% higher than voltage at rated
current, so check any adapter not supplied by Welch Allyn OEM Technologies).
If an unregulated adapter’s unloaded voltage is high enough to turn on Transzorb D6 in the
POEM Module, but not high enough to blow Fuse F1 on the Interface Board, the POEM Module
may be damaged. Also, while reprogramming the Module, higher voltage at J2 increases heating
in the Interface Board’s 5 V regulator. Based on these factors, an unregulated or regulated power
adapter rated at greater than or equal to 6 W at 6 to 9 Vdc is recommended. When given this
input, the Module and Interface Board fulfill all other power requirements.
NOTEIf the wrong polarity is applied to J2, the Module and Interface Board are not powered
and no damage occurs.
METHOD 2 - Regulated Power Supply Connection at J1
The simplest regulated power supply configuration requirements are shown in Figure 3. Refer to
the POEM NIBP Module OEM Implementation Manual for details about more complex power
supply configurations.

NOTEThe Interface Board’s level translator IC U2 imposes an upper data rate limit of
120 kbps under its manufacturer’s test conditions. Consult Maxim’s data sheet
