TheFederalCleanAirAct,Section203(a)(3),statesthefollowingconcerningthe
removalofairpollutioncontroldevicesormodicationofacertiedenginetoa
non-certiedconguration:
CAA,Section(a)(3)(A)prohibitsanypersonfromremovingorrenderinginoperative
anyemissioncontroldeviceorelementofdesigninstalledonorinamotorvehicle
ormotorvehicleengineincompliancewithfederalregulationsundertheCleanAir
Actpriortothesaleanddeliveryofthevehicletotheultimatepurchaser.Thestatute
alsoprohibitsanypersonfromknowinglyremovingorrenderinginoperativeany
emissioncontroldeviceorelementofdesignaftersaleanddeliveryofavehicleor
enginetotheultimatepurchaser.Anypersonwhoviolatestheseprovisionseither
byremovingorrenderinginoperativeemissionscontroldevicespriortothesaleor
deliveryofanengineorvehicletoanultimatepurchaser,orbyknowinglyremoving
orrendinginoperativesuchdevicesafterthesaleanddeliveryofanengineorvehicle
toanultimatepurchaser,canbesubjecttopenaltiesofupto$3,750perincident.
Anydealerormanufacturerwhoviolatestheseprovisionscanbesubjecttopenalties
ofupto$37,500perincident.

licensed.Nochangesshouldbemadethatrenderanyorallofthedevicesinoperative.
Shouldtheowner/operatorwishtomakeanychangestotheemissioncontroldevices,
checkwiththeprovincialauthoritybeforemakinganysuchchanges.
Mexico

suchwritteninstructionsforthemaintenanceanduseofthevehicleorengineby
theultimatepurchaserasmaybereasonableandnecessarytoassuretheproper

therequirementsoftheemissionsregulationspromulgatedundertheCanadian
EnvironmentalProtectionAct,1999.
Manufacturer’sWarrantyCoverage
VOLVOTrucksNorthAmericawarrantstheEmissionControlSystemsoneachnew
VOLVOdieselengineinanewVOLVOTrucktocomplywithallUnitedStates
FederalandCanadianemissionsregulationsapplicableatthetimeofmanufactureof
theengine,andtobefreefromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipundernormaluse
andserviceupto60months,or160934km(100,000miles),whicheveroccursrst,
providedthatallmaintenancerequirementsarefollowedasdescribedinthismanual.
Allwarrantyperiodsarecalculatedfromthedate-in-serviceofthenewvehicle.The
repairorreplacementofdefectivepartswillbemadewithoutchargeforthecostof
partsandifrepairsaremadeatanauthorizedVOLVOdealership,therewillbeno
chargeforlabor.

YourWarrantyRightsandObligations
TheCaliforniaAirResourcesBoardandVOLVOTrucksNorthAmericaarepleased
toExplaintheemissioncontrolsystemwarrantyonyour2013/2014vehicle.In
California,newmotorvehicleenginesmustbedesigned,builtandequippedtomeet
theState’sstringentanti-smogstandards.VOL VOmustwarranttheemissioncontrol
systemonyourenginefortheperiodoftimelistedbelowprovidedtherehasbeen
noabuse,neglect,orimpropermaintenanceofyourengine.Y ouremissioncontrol
systemmayincludepartssuchasthefuel-injectionsystem,turbochargerassembly,
electroniccontrolmoduleandotheremission-relatedassemblies.
Ifanemission-relatedpartofyourengineisdefective,thepartwillberepairedor
replacedbyVOLVO.ThisisyouremissioncontrolsystemDEFECTSWARRANTY .

miles,whicheveroccursrst,providedallVOLVOmaintenancerequirementsare
followedasdescribedinthismanual.Allwarrantyperiodsarecalculatedfromthe
date-in-serviceofthenewvehicle.Therepairorreplacementofdefectivepartswill
bemadewithoutchargeforthecostofpartsand,ifrepairsaremadeatanauthorized

Asthemotorvehicleengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceofthe
requiredmaintenancelistedinthismanual.VOL VOrecommendsthatyouretainall
receiptscoveringmaintenanceofyourvehicle,butVOLVOcannotdenywarranty
solelyforthelackofreceiptsorforyourfailuretoensuretheperformanceofall

1.RepairsbyVOL VODealers,Sub-DealersandServiceDealersRepairscovered
bytheEmissionControlSystemsWarrantywillbeperformedbyanyauthorized
VOLVOrepairfacilitywithnochargeforpartsandlabor(includingdiagnosis),using
VOLVOpartsforanypartoftheemissioncontrolsystemscoveredbythiswarranty
andfounddefective.
2.InanEmergencyInanemergency,whereanauthorizedVOLVOfacilityisnot
available,repairsmaybeperformedatanyavailableserviceestablishment,orbythe
owner,usinganyreplacementpart,withinthelimitationsofparagraphs3and4inthis
section.Anemergencyconditionexistsunderthissectionif,after30days,repairs
havenotbeencompletedorpartsarenotyetavailable.VOL VOwillreimbursethe
ownerforsuchrepairsthatarecoveredunderthiswarranty,includingdiagnosis,not
toexceedVOLVO’ssuggestedretailpriceforpartsreplacedandlaborchargesbased
onVOLVO’srecommendedtimeallowanceandgeographicallyappropriatehourly
laborrate.ReplacedpartsandpaidinvoicesmustbepresentedataVOL VOfacilityas
aconditionofreimbursementforemergencyrepairsperformedelsewhere.
3.RepairsbyNon-VOLVOFacilitiesOwnersmayelecttohavemaintenance,
replacement,orrepairofemissioncontrolsystemsperformedbyanyrepairfacility,
andmayelecttousepartsotherthanVOLVOpartswithoutinvalidatingthewarranty
onothercomponents,butthecostofsuchserviceorpartswillnotbecoveredby
VOLVOunderitswarranty.

Intheeventthatdamageresultsfromunauthorizedadjustmentstoanyemission
controlsystemcomponents,asevidencedbysettingsotherthanasspecied,

partsotherthanVOL VOparts;however,theuseofnon-VOLVOpartsdoesnot
invalidatethewarrantyonothercomponentsunlessnon-VOLVOpartscausedamage
towarrantedparts.
5.MaintenanceandMaintenanceRecordsThevehicleownerisresponsibleforthe
performanceofallrequiredmaintenancespeciedinthismanual.VOL VOwillnot
denyawarrantyclaimsolelybecausethereisnorecordofmaintenance;however,
VOLVOmaydenyawarrantyclaimiffailuretoperformrequiredmaintenanceresults
inthefailureofawarrantedpart.Receiptsorotherrecordscoveringtheperformance
ofscheduledmaintenanceshouldberetainedtoanswerquestionsthatmayarise
concerningmaintenance.Maintenancerecordsshouldbetransferredtosubsequent

SyntheticLubrication
Syntheticoilsareofferedbysomeoilsuppliersasanalternativetothetraditional,
petroleumbasedoilsforengines.TheseoilsmaybeusedinVOLVOengines,
providedtheymeetthequalitylevelsspeciedonthepreviouspages,thatis:both
VDS-4andEO-OPremiumPlus.
Theuseofsyntheticoilsdoesnotpermittheextensionoftherecommendedoil
changeintervals.Itisthecontaminationrate,i.e.,soot,andthedepletionof
additives,ratherthanbaseoilqualitythatdeterminestheusefulengineoillife
andthereforetheoilchangeintervals.
OilViscosity
Theviscositygradedenesthethicknessoftheoil.Theoilmustbethinenoughat
lowtemperaturesforeasycoldstartsandthickenoughtoprotectathightemperatures.
AnoilisnotfullydeneduntilboththeAPIqualityclassicationand
gradearespecied.
Choosetheviscositygradeforthetypicalambienttemperaturefortheapplication.
Multigradeoilshaveabroadrangethatsuitoperationinchangingtemperature.The
standardoilweightforVOL VOenginesis10W/30.

experiencesurfacetemperaturesashighas350°C(662°F).Itisimportanttoverify
thetemperatureatwhichthematerialorsubstancein,orassociatedwith,thebodycan
ignite.Ifitispossibleforthematerialorsubstancetofallorleakfromthebody,take
stepstopreventthemfromcontactingorcollectingontheDPForSCR.Failureto
dosomayresultinre.
Itisimportanttonotethatadditionalshieldingmay,dependinguponconditionsand
thematerialorsubstance,trapammablesubstancesbetweentheadditionalshield
andtheDPF/SCR.Ifthisconditioncandevelop,advisetheuserofthevehicleto
periodicallychecktoensuretherearenotrappedsubstances.
Note:TheDPF/SCRandassociatedcomponentsarepartofaU.S.EPAand
CaliforniaAirResourcesBoard(CARB)certiedengineemissionssystem.These
componentsmustnotbemoved,alteredormodiedinanyway.Tamperingwith
thesesystemsrendertheemissionswarrantyvoidandmayresultinpossible
tamperingchargesbytheEPAorCARB.
