TheFederalCleanAirAct,Section203(a)(3),statesthefollowingconcerningthe
removalofairpollutioncontroldevicesormodicationofacertiedenginetoa
non-certiedconguration:
CAA,Section(a)(3)(A)prohibitsanypersonfromremovingorrenderinginoperative
anyemissioncontroldeviceorelementofdesigninstalledonorinamotorvehicle
ormotorvehicleengineincompliancewithfederalregulationsundertheCleanAir
Actpriortothesaleanddeliveryofthevehicletotheultimatepurchaser.Thestatute
alsoprohibitsanypersonfromknowinglyremovingorrenderinginoperativeany
emissioncontroldeviceorelementofdesignaftersaleanddeliveryofavehicleor
enginetotheultimatepurchaser.Anypersonwhoviolatestheseprovisionseither
byremovingorrenderinginoperativeemissionscontroldevicespriortothesaleor
deliveryofanengineorvehicletoanultimatepurchaser,orbyknowinglyremoving
orrendinginoperativesuchdevicesafterthesaleanddeliveryofanengineorvehicle
toanultimatepurchaser,canbesubjecttopenaltiesofupto$3,750perincident.
Anydealerormanufacturerwhoviolatestheseprovisionscanbesubjecttopenalties
ofupto$37,500perincident.

Canada

ThesameconditionsthatapplyintheUSAapplytoCanada,withoneexception.
Afterthevehicleissoldtoaretailcustomer,thatis,theenduser,thejurisdiction
controllingtheemissioncontroldevicesbecomestheprovinceinwhichthevehicleis
licensed.Nochangesshouldbemadethatrenderanyorallofthedevicesinoperative.

Shouldtheowner/operatorwishtomakeanychangestotheemissioncontroldevices,
checkwiththeprovincialauthoritybeforemakinganysuchchanges.

Mexico

ThesameconditionsthatapplyintheUSAapplytoMexico.RefertotheMexican
FederalLawforEmissionControlwhichadherestoEPAregulations.Nochanges
shouldbemadethatrenderanyoralloftheemissionscontroldevicesinoperative.

Shouldtheowner/operatorwishtomakeanychangestotheemissioncontroldevices,
checkwiththestateauthoritybeforemakinganysuchchanges.

TheFederalCleanAirActprohibitstheremovalorrenderinginoperativeofany
deviceorelementofdesigninstalledonorinamotorvehicleormotorvehicleengine
incompliancewithFederalEmissionRegulationsby:

1Anypersonpriortoitssaleanddeliverytotheultimatepurchaser,or

2Anymanufacturerordistributorafteritssaleanddeliverytotheultimatepurchaser,

or

3Anypersonengagedinthebusinessofrepairing,servicing,selling,leasing,or

tradingmotorvehiclesormotorvehicleenginesfollowingitssaleanddelivery

newVOLVOdieselengineinanewVOL VOtrucktocomplywithallUnitedStates
FederalandCanadianemissionsregulationsapplicableatthetimeofmanufactureof
theengine,andtobefreefromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipundernormaluse
andserviceupto60months,or100,000miles,whicheveroccursrst,providedall
VOLVOTrucksNorthAmerica,maintenancerequirementsarefollowedasdescribed

OxidationCatalyst(DOC)DPFsystems,isnotcoveredbytheemissionwarranty.
WiththeThermalRegenerationDPFsystem,cleaningtheignitionelectrodesandfuel
injectionnozzleattheregularmaintenanceintervalsisconsiderednormalmaintenance
andnotcoveredbytheemissionwarranty.

Note:Inresponsetocustomerrequests,VOLVOTrucksNorthAmerica,maybuild
vehicleswithenginessuppliedbyothermanufacturers.Inthesecases,eachengine
manufacturerthroughitsserviceorganization,isresponsibleforemissioncontrol

FederalandCanadianWarrantyRequirements

ThissectioncoverstherequirementoftheUnitedStatesCleanAirActwhichstates:
“Themanufacturershallfurnishwitheachnewmotorvehicleormotorvehicleengine
suchwritteninstructionsforthemaintenanceanduseofthevehicleorengineby
theultimatepurchaserasmaybereasonableandnecessarytoassuretheproper
functioningofemissioncontroldevicesandsystems.”Thissectionalsocovers
therequirementsoftheemissionsregulationspromulgatedundertheCanadian
EnvironmentalProtectionAct,1999.

Manufacturer’sWarrantyCoverage

VOLVOTrucksNorthAmericawarrantstheEmissionControlSystemsoneachnew
VOLVOdieselengineinanewVOLVOTrucktocomplywithallUnitedStates
FederalandCanadianemissionsregulationsapplicableatthetimeofmanufactureof
theengine,andtobefreefromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipundernormaluse
andserviceupto60months,or160934km(100,000miles),whicheveroccursrst,
providedthatallmaintenancerequirementsarefollowedasdescribedinthismanual.
Allwarrantyperiodsarecalculatedfromthedate-in-serviceofthenewvehicle.The
repairorreplacementofdefectivepartswillbemadewithoutchargeforthecostof
partsandifrepairsaremadeatanauthorizedVOLVOdealership,therewillbeno
chargeforlabor.
VOLVO’sobligationunderthiswarrantyislimitedtotherepairorreplacement,at
VOLVO’soption,ofanypart(s)oftheEmissionControlSystemsofsuchengine
and/orvehiclefoundtobedefectiveuponexaminationbyVOLVOandprovided
thatsuchpart(s)werereturnedtoVOL VOoritsnearestauthorizedDealerwithina
reasonableperiodoftime.

CaliforniaEmissionControlWarrantyStatement

YourWarrantyRightsandObligations

TheCaliforniaAirResourcesBoardandVOLVOTrucksNorthAmericaarepleased
toExplaintheemissioncontrolsystemwarrantyonyour2013/2014vehicle.In
California,newmotorvehicleenginesmustbedesigned,builtandequippedtomeet
theState’sstringentanti-smogstandards.VOL VOmustwarranttheemissioncontrol
systemonyourenginefortheperiodoftimelistedbelowprovidedtherehasbeen
noabuse,neglect,orimpropermaintenanceofyourengine.Y ouremissioncontrol
systemmayincludepartssuchasthefuel-injectionsystem,turbochargerassembly,
electroniccontrolmoduleandotheremission-relatedassemblies.
Ifanemission-relatedpartofyourengineisdefective,thepartwillberepairedor
replacedbyVOLVO.ThisisyouremissioncontrolsystemDEFECTSWARRANTY .

miles,whicheveroccursrst,providedallVOLVOmaintenancerequirementsare
followedasdescribedinthismanual.Allwarrantyperiodsarecalculatedfromthe
date-in-serviceofthenewvehicle.Therepairorreplacementofdefectivepartswill
bemadewithoutchargeforthecostofpartsand,ifrepairsaremadeatanauthorized

Asthemotorvehicleengineowner,youareresponsiblefortheperformanceofthe

receiptscoveringmaintenanceofyourvehicle,butVOLVOcannotdenywarranty
solelyforthelackofreceiptsorforyourfailuretoensuretheperformanceofall

1.RepairsbyVOL VODealers,Sub-DealersandServiceDealersRepairscovered
bytheEmissionControlSystemsWarrantywillbeperformedbyanyauthorized
VOLVOrepairfacilitywithnochargeforpartsandlabor(includingdiagnosis),using
VOLVOpartsforanypartoftheemissioncontrolsystemscoveredbythiswarranty
andfounddefective.

2.InanEmergencyInanemergency,whereanauthorizedVOLVOfacilityisnot
available,repairsmaybeperformedatanyavailableserviceestablishment,orbythe
owner,usinganyreplacementpart,withinthelimitationsofparagraphs3and4inthis
section.Anemergencyconditionexistsunderthissectionif,after30days,repairs
havenotbeencompletedorpartsarenotyetavailable.VOL VOwillreimbursethe
ownerforsuchrepairsthatarecoveredunderthiswarranty,includingdiagnosis,not
toexceedVOLVO’ssuggestedretailpriceforpartsreplacedandlaborchargesbased
onVOLVO’srecommendedtimeallowanceandgeographicallyappropriatehourly
laborrate.ReplacedpartsandpaidinvoicesmustbepresentedataVOL VOfacilityas
aconditionofreimbursementforemergencyrepairsperformedelsewhere.

3.RepairsbyNon-VOLVOFacilitiesOwnersmayelecttohavemaintenance,
replacement,orrepairofemissioncontrolsystemsperformedbyanyrepairfacility,
andmayelecttousepartsotherthanVOLVOpartswithoutinvalidatingthewarranty
onothercomponents,butthecostofsuchserviceorpartswillnotbecoveredby
VOLVOunderitswarranty.

Intheeventthatdamageresultsfromunauthorizedadjustmentstoanyemission

warrantedbytheirmanufacturertobetheequivalentofVOLVOpartsinperformance
anddurability.VOL VOassumesnoliabilityunderthiswarrantywithrespectto
partsotherthanVOL VOparts;however,theuseofnon-VOLVOpartsdoesnot
invalidatethewarrantyonothercomponentsunlessnon-VOLVOpartscausedamage
towarrantedparts.

5.MaintenanceandMaintenanceRecordsThevehicleownerisresponsibleforthe
performanceofallrequiredmaintenancespeciedinthismanual.VOL VOwillnot
denyawarrantyclaimsolelybecausethereisnorecordofmaintenance;however,
VOLVOmaydenyawarrantyclaimiffailuretoperformrequiredmaintenanceresults
inthefailureofawarrantedpart.Receiptsorotherrecordscoveringtheperformance
ofscheduledmaintenanceshouldberetainedtoanswerquestionsthatmayarise

meetingAPIstandardshaveprovidedmaximumenginelifewhenusedtogetherwith
therecommendedoilandoillterchangeintervals.

EO-OPremiumPlus(orVDS-4)dieselengineoilismandatoryforuseinall2010
emissioncompliantVOL VOengines.Chassisequippedwitha2010emission
compliantengine,whichcanbeidentiedbythepresenceofaDieselParticulateFilter
(DPF),alsorequiretheuseofUltraLowSulfurDiesel(ULSD)fuel.EO-OPremium
PlusoilsexceedthenewAPIservicecategoryCJ-4.

SyntheticLubrication

Syntheticoilsareofferedbysomeoilsuppliersasanalternativetothetraditional,
petroleumbasedoilsforengines.TheseoilsmaybeusedinVOLVOengines,
providedtheymeetthequalitylevelsspeciedonthepreviouspages,thatis:both
VDS-4andEO-OPremiumPlus.

Theuseofsyntheticoilsdoesnotpermittheextensionoftherecommendedoil
changeintervals.Itisthecontaminationrate,i.e.,soot,andthedepletionof
additives,ratherthanbaseoilqualitythatdeterminestheusefulengineoillife
andthereforetheoilchangeintervals.

OilViscosity

Theviscositygradedenesthethicknessoftheoil.Theoilmustbethinenoughat
lowtemperaturesforeasycoldstartsandthickenoughtoprotectathightemperatures.
AnoilisnotfullydeneduntilboththeAPIqualityclassicationand
gradearespecied.

Choosetheviscositygradeforthetypicalambienttemperaturefortheapplication.
Multigradeoilshaveabroadrangethatsuitoperationinchangingtemperature.The
standardoilweightforVOL VOenginesis10W/30.

CAUTION

Extraoiladditivesmustneverbeaddedtoanyengineoilused.Additivessuchas

Usingoilstothequalitystandardsrecommendedinthismanualmakestheuseof
extraoiladditivesunnecessary ,astheseoilsalreadycontainabalancedtreatment
ofadditives.

OilConsumption

Oncetheengineisstopped,checktheoilleveldaily.Iftheenginehasjustbeen
stoppedanditiswarm,waitapproximatelyveminutestoallowtheoiltodrainback
totheoilpanbeforechecking.Addoilasnecessary.

CheckifthevehicleisequippedwithaDieselParticulateFilter(DPF)oraDPF
andSelectiveCatalyticReductionunit(SCR).Thesecomponentsarepartofthe
overallvehicleemissionscontrolsystem.Innormaloperation,thesecomponentscan
experiencesurfacetemperaturesashighas350°C(662°F).Itisimportanttoverify
thetemperatureatwhichthematerialorsubstancein,orassociatedwith,thebodycan
ignite.Ifitispossibleforthematerialorsubstancetofallorleakfromthebody,take
stepstopreventthemfromcontactingorcollectingontheDPForSCR.Failureto
dosomayresultinre.

Itisimportanttonotethatadditionalshieldingmay,dependinguponconditionsand
thematerialorsubstance,trapammablesubstancesbetweentheadditionalshield
andtheDPF/SCR.Ifthisconditioncandevelop,advisetheuserofthevehicleto
periodicallychecktoensuretherearenotrappedsubstances.

Note:TheDPF/SCRandassociatedcomponentsarepartofaU.S.EPAand
CaliforniaAirResourcesBoard(CARB)certiedengineemissionssystem.These
componentsmustnotbemoved,alteredormodiedinanyway.Tamperingwith
thesesystemsrendertheemissionswarrantyvoidandmayresultinpossible
tamperingchargesbytheEPAorCARB.

CAUTION

TheDieselparticulateltersandtheir
components,cannotbemovedor
