Playing a disc with MP3 audio tracks

About MP3
MP3 (MPEG 1 Audio Layer-3) is a standard technology a nd forma t f or com pres si ng a s oun d sequence. The track is compressed to about 1/10 of its original size . Sounds outside the range of human hearing are compressed while the sounds we can hear are not compressed.
Notes on discs
You can play MP3 audio tracks recorded on CD-ROMs, CD-Rs (recordable CDs), or CD-RWs (rewritable CDs). The disc must be in the ISO9660* level 1, leve l 2 or Joliet format.
*ISO9660 Format
The most common international standard for the logical format of tracks and albums on a CD- R OM. There are several s pecificat ion lev els. In Level 1, tr ack names must be in the 8.3 format (no more tha n ei ght characters in the name, no more than three characters in the extension “.MP3”) and in capital letters. Album names can be no longer than eight characters. There can be no more than eight nested album levels. Level 2 specifications allow album name s a nd trac k na me s up to 31 characters long.

Glossary

n
Album
Section of a music piec e on a data CD containing MP3 au di o t ra cks.
Bit Rate
Value indicating th e am ount of video data compressed in a DVD per second. The unit is Mbps (Mega bit per second). 1 Mbps indicates that the data per seco nd i s 1, 000,000 bits. The higher the bit rate is, th e l arger the amount of data. However, this does not always mean that you can get higher qua lit y pictures.
Chapter
Sections of a picture or a music piece on a DVD that are smaller than titles. A title is composed of several chapters. Each chapter is assigned a chapter number enabling you to locate the chapter you want.
Digital Infrared Audio Transmission
Recent times have been witness to the rapid spread of DVDs, Digital Broadcasting Satellite Receiver and other high-quality media. In order to ensure that the su btle nuances endo w ed by these high-quality media would be transmitted with no accompanyi ng deterioration, So ny developed a technology cal led “Dig ital In frared Audio Transmission” for the infrared transmission of d igital audio signals usi ng no compression, and it introduced it into the DHCFLX9W. This technology transfers digital audio signals using no compression inside the sub carrier frequency band allocated by the IEC (International Electronic Committee) and JEITA (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association) for hi-fi audio transmissi on applications.

Dolby Digital
This sound format for movie theaters is more advanced than Dolby Surround Pro Logic. In this format, the rear speakers o u t put stereo sound with an expa nded frequenc y range and a subwoofer ch annel for deep bass is independently provided. This format is also called “5.1” because the subwoofer channel is counted as 0.1 channel (since it functions only when a deep bass effect is needed). All six channels in this format are recorded separately to realize superior channel separation. Furthermore, si nce all the signals are proces sed digitally, less si gnal degradation occurs.
Dolby Pro Logic II
Dolby Pro Logic II creates five full-bandwi dt h output ch annel s f rom t wo- channe l so urc es. This is done using an ad vanced, high-purity matrix surround deco der that extracts the sp at i al properties of the original recording withou t adding any new sounds or tonal colorations.
• Dolby Pro Logic II Movie
The Movie mode is for use with stereo televi sion shows and all progr ammes encoded in Dol by Surround. The result is enhanced soundfield directionality that approaches the quality of discrete 5.1-channel sound.
• Dolby Pro Logic II Music
The Music mode is for use with any stereo music recordings, and provides a wide and deep sound space.
Dolby Surround Pro Logic
As one method of decoding Dolby Surr ound, Dolby Surro und Pro Logic produces four channels from two- channel sound. Comp ar ed with the former Dolby Surround system, Dolby Surround Pro Log i c reproduces left-to- ri ght panning more naturally and localizes sounds more precisely. To take full advantage of Dolby Surround Pro Logic, you should have one pair of rear speakers and a center speaker. T he rear speakers output m onaural sound.

DTS
Digital audio compression technology that the Digital Theater Syst em s , Inc. developed. This technology conforms to 5.1-channel surround. The rear channel is st ereo and there is disc rete subwoofer channel in this format. DTS provides the same 5.1 discret e channels of high qualit y digital audio. The good channel separation is realized be cause the a ll ch annel data i s r ecorde d discrete and processed in digital.
DVD
A disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving pictures ev en though it s diameter is the same as a CD. The data capacity of a single-layer and singlesided DVD, at 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), is 7 times that of a CD. Furthermore, the data capacity of a dual-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5 GB, a single-layer and double-sid ed DVD 9.4 GB, and a dual-layer and double-sided DVD 17 GB. The picture data uses the MPEG 2 format, one of the worldwide standards of dig ita l co mpr es sion technology. The picture data is compressed to about 1/40 of its original size. The DVD also uses the variable rate coding technology that changes the data to be allocated according to the status of the picture. The audio data is re corded in Dolby Digi ta l as well as in PCM, allowing yo u to enjoy more r eal audio presence. Fu rt hermore, various advanced functions such as the multi-angle, multilingual, and Parental Control functions are provided with the DVD.
Index (CD) / Video Index (VIDEO CD)
A number that divides a track into sections to easily locate the point you want on a VIDEO CD or a CD. Depending on the disc, no indexes may be recorded.
Multi-angle function
Various angles , or viewpoints of the video camera, for a scene ar e recorded on so me DVDs.
Multilingual function
Several lang ua ges fo r the so und or subt itl es in a picture are recorded on some DVDs.
Parental Control
A function of the DVD to limit playback of the disc by the age of the users according to the limitation level in each country/region. The limitation varies from disc to disc; when it is activated, playback is completely prohibited, violent scenes are skipped or replaced with other scenes and so on.
Playback Control (PBC)
Signals encoded on VIDEO CDs (Ver si on 2.0) to control playba ck. By using menu screens recorded on VIDEO CDs with PBC functions, you can enjoy playin g simple interactive programs, prog rams with search functions, and so on. This system conforms to Ver. 1.1 and Ver. 2.0 of VIDEO CD standards. You can enjoy two kinds of playback dependi ng on the disc type.
VIDEO CDs without PBC functions (Ver. 1.1 discs)
Enjoy video playback (moving pictures) as well as music.
VIDEO CDs with PBC functions (Ver. 2.0 discs)
Play interactive software using men u s creens displayed on the TV screen (PBC Playback), in addition to the video playback functions of Ver.
1.1 discs. Moreove r, you can play highresolution still pictures, if they are included on the disc.
Progressive format
Compared to the Interlace format that alternately shows every other line of an image (field) to create one frame, the Progressive fo rm at shows the entire image at once as a single fram e. This means that while the Interlace format can show 30 frames (60 fields) in one second, t he Progressive for mat can show 60 frames in one second. The overall picture quality increases and still images, text, and horizontal lines appear sharper. This player is compatible with the 525 progressive fo r m at.

Region Code
This system is used to protect copyrights. A region number is allocated o n each DVD system or DVD disc accordi ng to the sal es region . Each region code is shown on the system as well as on the disc packaging. Th e system can play the discs that match its region code. The system can also play discs with the “ ” mark. Even when
ALL
the region code is not shown on the DVD, the region limit may still be activated.
Scene
On a VIDEO CD with PBC functions (page 31), the menu screens, moving pictures, and still pictures are divide d i nt o sections called “scenes”. Each scene is assigned a scene number enabling you to locate the scene you want.
Super Audio CD
Super Audio CD is a new high quality audio disc standard that records using the DSD (Direct Stream Digital) f ormat instead of the PCM format used for current CD s, et c. The DSD format has a sampling frequenc y 64 times that of current CDs, an d uses 1-bit quantization to ensure a sufficient dynamic range and mo re faithfully reprod uce the original sound ov er a vastly wider playb ack range and audible r ange than current CDs. There are various types of Super Audio CD as follows.
• Super Audio CD (single layer disc) Discs with only a single HD (high density) layer (high density signal layer fo r Super Audio CD)
• Super Audio CD (dual layer disc) Discs with two HD layers that allow longtime playback. These discs have a two-layer structure but only one side is read, so there is no need to turn over th e disc.
• Super Audio CD + C D (hybrid disc) Two-layer discs with a HD layer and a CD layer. These discs have a two-layer structure but only one side is read, so there is no need to turn over the disc. In additi on, the CD layer contents can be pl ayed even by a normal CD player.
• T wo-channel + multi-channel Super Audio CD discs Super Audio CD discs with both a twochannel area and a multi-channe l area recorded in the HD layer.
Title
The longest se ct ions of a picture or a music piece on a DVD; a movie, etc., for a pictur e piece on video so ftw are ; or an a lbum , et c., for a music piece on an audio software. Each title is assigned a title num ber enabling you to locat e the title you want.

A compact disc th at contains moving pict ur es. The picture da ta uses the MP EG 1 format, one of the worldwide standards of digi ta l co mpr es sio n technology. The picture data is compressed to about 1/140 of its original size. Consequently, a 12 cm VIDEO CD can contain up to 74 minutes of moving pictures. VIDEO CDs als o contain compact aud i o data. Sounds outside the range of human hearing are compressed while the sounds we can hear are not compressed. VIDEO CDs can hold 6 times the audio inform ation of conventional audio CDs. There are 2 vers i on s of VIDEO CDs.
• Version 1.1: Yo u can play only moving pictures and sounds .
• Version 2.0: Yo u can play high-resolutio n still pictures and enj oy PBC functions.
