Subject
Incorrect Antenna
Please be aware that non-Sony antennas for CMD-Z1 and/or CMD-Z1Plus can be found on the market. These
antennas do not correspond to Sony specifications, and under certain conditions – when used in the antenna-down
position – their performance is totally inferior compared to the original Sony Antenna (1-501-782-11).
The difference in performance can obviously lead to confusion; e.g.: sets of which a customer thinks they are
defective since the reception is very weak, but in fact it is the weak performance of the antenna which causes the
problem.
• The European Guarantee cards clearly mention that guarantee will not be covered for repair done by
non-authorized service stations or dealers, or the customer himself (replacement of an antenna can be
considered as a repair).
• The CMD-Z1 user instruction manual clearly mentions that:
∗ Only the original or a specified antenna should be used (the only specified antenna so far is the original
antenna).
Ref. No.
IP00398
Model
CMD-Z1, CMD-Z1Plus

IRIS
∗ The antenna should be in the upper position when a telephone call is performed.
In view of the above points, replacement of non-specified antennas cannot be performed under warranty, and
depending on the symptoms, possible repair related to such an antenna can also not be considered as warranty
repair.
It is therefore highly advisable that whenever such an antenna is seen, the user should be informed about possible
problems, and should be convinced that the replacement of this non-Sony antenna by an original Sony antenna is
the only correct solution.
A number of differences have been noted between the original Sony antenna and the non-Sony antenna:
• The Sony antenna is slightly longer (the total length of the Sony antenna is 12.2 cm whereas that of the
non-Sony antenna is 12.05 cm). See fig. 1 and 4.
• The lower plastic part of the Sony antenna is a brilliant type of plastic, the non-Sony antenna not (see fig. 2).
• The top part of the Sony antenna is a non-brilliant rubber, the non-Sony antenna is a semi-brilliant grained
rubber type (see fig. 3).
• The metal bottom part of the Sony antenna is slotted (there is a groove in the bottom part), the non-Sony
antenna is not (see fig. 1 and 4).
NOTE
On the pictures shown below, the Sony antenna is always on the right side, the non-Sony antenna on the left side.
