General information and warnings
WARNING! This is a Warning symbol. Warnings mean that failure to follow specific practices and procedures may have major consequences such as injury or death.
CAUTION! This is a Caution symbol. Cautions give information about procedures that, if not observed, could result in damage to equipment or corruption to and loss of data.
NOTE: This is a Note symbol. Notes give additional and important information, hints and tips that help you to use your product.

1.2 Safety

Failure to properly operate the scale can result in severe injury and/or damage to the equipment. Keep this manual as a permanent part of the reloading equipment at all times for reference.

1.2.1 General

Use all equipment as recommended.
Keep all equipment and tools clean and orderly. Promptly clean up any powder and primer spills.
Do not reload when you are fatigued, ill or under the influence of medications or alcohol. Reload only when you can give the procedure your undivided attention. Don’t rush and develop a routine to avoid mistakes.
Always wear adequate eye protection.

1.2.2 Primers and Powder

Store primers and powder beyond the reach of children and away from heat, dampness, open flames and electrical equipment. Avoid areas where static electricity is evident.
Do not use primers of unknown identity. Discard unknown primers in accordance with applicable regulations.
Keep primers in the original factory container until ready to use. Return unused primers to the same factory packaging for safety and to preserve their identity and shelf life. Primer packaging is designed to provide safe storage.
DO NOT store primers in bulk. The blast of just a few hundred primers is sufficient to cause serious injury to anyone nearby.
DO NOT force primers. Use care in handling primers.
6 APD-100 Automatic Powder Dispenser User Instructions
Page 7
1.2 Safety
DO have more than one can of powder on the bench at one time. Powder cans should be stored away from the bench to avoid picking up the wrong one.
DO NOT use any powder unless its identity is positively known. The only positive identification is the manufacturer’s label on the original canister. Discard all mixed powders and those of uncertain identity.
DO NOT store powder in the unit after a reloading session. Over time the powder will corrode the powder hopper.
DO NOT smoke while reloading.
Observe all warnings about the use of maximum listed loads.
Use only laboratory tested reloading data.
DANGER: THIS DIGITAL SCALE IS FOR USE WITH SMOKELESS POWDERS ONLY. DO NOT USE WITH BLACK POWDER (USED IN MUZZLE LOADING FIREARMS). IF BLACK POWDER SHOULD COME IN CONTACT WITH AN ELECTRICAL SPARK, AN EXPLOSION MAY OCCUR RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
CAUTION: When changing powder be sure that ALL powder is removed from the scale before new powder is added. Be sure to carefully remove powder feed tube and powder box and clear all powder residue.
Be sure the scale reads zero before dispensing powder. If powder is dispensed without a proper zero reading, the charge will not be correct and could be dangerous.
Be careful not be get powder between the platform and the scale body. This can affect scale readings. If powder does drop into this area, carefully remove it with the supplied brush. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE PLATFORM.
Be sure to use the supplied power adapter for this scale. Do not substitute another adapter.
There are several hundred types of smokeless powder currently available. The flow rate of each type will vary when dropped from scale. The scale and feed tube are designed to give the fastest drop time while still accurately controlling the charge weight. Extensive testing has shown that a few powders may flow too quickly, however, and trickle past your selected charge weight. When this occurs, please install restrictor plug into the end of powder feed tube; or to decrease the value of Min.xx/PUL.xx and increase the value of CHG.xx/SWI.xx/ BEF.xx you have set in CONFIG section.

1.2.3 Precautions

Here are some things which may cause inaccuracy in your scale operation:

1.2.4 Records

l Change in temperature. If the temperature changes more than a few
degrees, you must recalibrate the scale. Allow the scale to warm up for 20-30 minutes prior to use.
l Changes in scale location or an unlevel work surface. l Uncentered weights on the scale platen. l Jarring of the scale during operation. l Weight accuracy is critical. Keep weights clean and carefully stored. If
dropped or damaged, have weights inspected against known standards.
l Static electricity can cause the scale display to drift. If static buildup is
evident, wipe the scale with an antistatic sheet or use antistatic spray. Spray on a clean soft cloth first. Do not allow spray to get into the mechanism.
l If powder should get inside the unit, stop operation immediately and do not
use the scale until it has been serviced.
l Do not press on the scale platen with your hand. You can damage the
loadcell. This is a precision instrument.
Keep complete records of reloads. Apply a descriptive label to each box showing the date produced, the primer, powder and bullet used. Never attempt to guess at the identity of your ammunition.

2. Press the FAST/^ or TRICKEL/v key to scroll through the powder types: BALL, FLAKE, EXTRUD, CUST1, CUST2 or CUST3. Press the ENTER key to accept your displayed choice…
MAX. XX is displayed. This parameter sets the high range speed of the dispensing motor. XX is the value of the setting. Settings can be between 8 and 16. The default setting is 16, which is the fastest motor speed.
3. Type in a value between 8 and 16 and press the ENTER key to accept the value displayed…
MIN. X is displayed. This parameter sets the low speed of the dispensing motor. X is the value of the setting. Settings can be between 3 and 8. The default setting is 4. Smaller numbers mean slower motor speeds.
4. Type in a value between 3 and 8 and press the ENTER key to accept the value displayed…
PUL. XX is displayed. This parameter sets the length of each pulse of the dispensing motor for delivering very small quantities of powder. XX is the value of the setting. Settings can be between 4 and 20. The default setting is 10. Smaller numbers mean shorter pulses.
5. Type in a value between 4 and 20 and press the ENTER key to accept the value displayed…
CHG. XX is displayed. Use this parameter to set the percent of the weight for this powder charge which will be dispensed at the high motor speed. XX is the value of the setting. Settings are in percentages of the total powder weight wanted for the charge so values can be between 1 and 100. The default setting is 80.
This means the motor will run at high speed as 0 to 80% of the weight is dispensed.
6. Type in a value between 1 and 100 and press the ENTER key to accept the value displayed…
SWI. XX is displayed. Use this parameter to set the percent of the weight at which the motor begins to dispense in low speed. XX is the value of the setting. Settings are in percentages of the total powder weight wanted for the charge so values can be between 1 and 100. The default setting is 90.
This means the motor will run at low speed from the 90% weight level to the next parameter’s (BEF) value.

7. Type in a value between 1 and 100 and press the ENTER key to accept the value displayed…
BEF. XX is displayed. Use this parameter to set the percent of the weight at which the motor starts dispensing in pulse mode. XX is the value of the setting. Settings are in percentages of the total powder weight wanted for the charge so values can be between 1 and 100. The default setting is 95.
This means the motor will run at pulse speed from the 95% weight level to the 100% weight level.
The equation below shows the relationship between the three parameters. CHG must be less than or equal to SWI which must be less than or equal to BEF which must be less than or equal to 100%. CHG. XX <
SWI. XX < BEF. XX < 100%.
Also refer to the motor speed chart in Figure 5.3.

6.1 Cleaning
The APD-100 must be cleaned after use or when changing the type of powder. It is strongly recommended that powder NOT be left in the powder dispenser when finished loading or when putting it away as you may forget what kind of powder was used. This is extremely dangerous.
CAUTION: Do not turn unit upside down and shake, as this could harm the loadcell!
Refer to the photos as you go through the steps of the cleaning procedure listed below.
1. To clean the APD-100, place the rubber cap onto the end of powder feet tube and lower the powder cleaning chute on the rear panel behind the powder reservoir. Be certain that you have a container under the chute to catch all powder from the reservoir and powder compartment. Lift the powder shut-off door to allow the powder to flow out.
