Warning and safety instructions
Use
General notes
The appliance is only intended for
use by adults who have read these
operating instructions.
The appliance gets hot when in
use, and remains hot for quite a
while after being switched off. Do not
touch it whilst it is still hot.
This appliance is not a toy! To
avoid the risk of injury keep
children well away and do not let them
play with it or use the controls. They
will not understand the potential
dangers posed by it. They should be
supervised whenever you are working
in the kitchen.
Do not store anything which might
arouse a child's interest in storage
areas above or next to the appliance.
Otherwise they could be tempted into
climbing onto the appliance with the
risk of burning themselves.
Keep all pans out of reach of
children. Turn pan handles inwards
away from the edge of the hob. Special
hob guards are available from good
retail outlets.
To avoid burning yourself, use oven
gloves. Do not let oven gloves get
damp or wet, as this causes heat to
transfer through the material more
quickly with the risk of scalding or
burning yourself.
appliance could catch fire. The life of
the appliance could also be reduced.
Do not heat up unopened tins of
food on the hob, as pressure will
build up in the tin and it can explode.
This could result in injury and scalding
or damage.
Do not use the hob as a resting
place for anything else. The article
could melt or catch fire if residual heat
is still present or if the appliance is
switched on by mistake.
Do not cover the appliance, e.g.
with a cloth, kitchen foil, etc. They
could catch fire.
Never leave the appliance
unattended when cooking with oil
or fat. Very hot oil can catch fire and
cause damage, e.g. to a cooker hood
above. Always heat fat slowly, watching
as it heats.
If, despite this, oil or fat does catch
fire, do not attempt to put out the
flames with water. Use a suitable fire
blanket, saucepan lid, damp towel or
similar to smother the flames.
Do not flambé under a cooker
hood. The flames could set the
cooker hood on fire.
Spray canisters, aerosols and other
inflammable substances should not
be stored in a drawer under the hob.
Cutlery inserts must be heat-resistant.
Do not use the appliance to heat
up the room. Due to the high
temperatures radiated, objects near the
13
Warning and safety instructions
When using an electric socket near
the appliance, care should be
taken that the cable of the electrical
appliance does not come into contact
with the hot appliance. The insulation
on the cable could become damaged,
giving rise to an electric shock hazard.
Always ensure that food is
sufficiently cooked or reheated.
Many factors will affect the overall
cooking time, including the size and
amount of food and its temperature.
Some foods, e.g. poultry, may contain
micro-organisms which are only
destroyed by thorough cooking at a
sufficiently high temperature for long
enough. If in doubt, select a longer
cooking or reheating time.
Do not use plastic or aluminium foil
containers. These melt at high
temperatures and could catch fire.
Unless the pan manufacturer
states that you can do so, do not
use pans with very thin bases on this
hob, and never heat up empty pans as
they could get damaged. This could
also damage the appliance.
Do not use a steam cleaner to
clean this appliance. The steam
could reach electrical components and
cause a short circuit. Pressurised
steam could also cause permanent
damage to the surface and to other
components, for which the
manufacturer cannot accept liability.
In countries where there are areas
which may be subject to infestation
by cockroaches or other vermin, pay
particular attention to keeping the
appliance and its surroundings in a
clean condition at all times. Any
damage which may be caused by
cockroaches or other vermin will not be
covered by the appliance guarantee.
Ceramic hobs
Do not drop anything on the
ceramic surface. Even a light
object could cause damage in certain
circumstances.
In the event of any damage or any
breakages or cracks, the ceramic
hob must be switched off immediately
and disconnected from the electricity
supply. Contact the Service
Department. Ensure that the hob is not
reconnected, and do not use the hob
until the damaged ceramic plate has
been replaced. Continued use would
be dangerous, as liquids etc. boiling
over could penetrate to the electrical
components through any crack. Danger
of electric shock.
Do not use pots or pans on the
ceramic hob with bases with
pronounced edges or ridges, e.g. cast
iron pans. These could scratch or scour
the hob surface permanently. Grains of
salt and sand can also scratch.
To prevent the risk of spillages etc.
burning on, remove any soiling as
quickly as possible and ensure that pan
bases are clean, dry and free of
grease.
14
Warning and safety instructions
Do not allow either solid or liquid
sugar, or pieces of plastic or
aluminium foil to get on ceramic
cooking zones when they are hot. If this
should occur, switch off the hob and
carefully scrape off all the sugar, plastic
or aluminium remains from the hob
while it is still hot using a shielded
scraper blade. Take care not to burn
yourself. If these residues are allowed
to cool before the hob surface has
been cleaned, the ceramic surface will
be susceptible to pitting or even
cracking.
Never place hot pans near the
display area or the warming zone
control area. The electronic unit
underneath could get damaged.
There is a seal between the hob
frame and worktop and between
the frame and the ceramic plate. Do not
use any sharp pointed object, such as
a knife, to clean these seals as they
could become damaged.
Solid hotplates
Do not use covers on these
hotplates. If a hotplate is switched
on while the cover is on, it could warp.
Furthermore, moisture collecting
between the hotplate and the cover
could cause corrosion.
Avoid allowing liquids or foods
containing salt to spill onto the hot
plate surround or stainless steel trough.
If salty foods or liquids do get on the
hob, they should be removed as soon
as possible to avoid the risk of
corrosion.
Do not allow the hotplates to
remain wet or damp for any length
of time as this will cause corrosion. The
hotplates can be dried off by switching
them on for a short while.
If you have used the shielded razor
blade for cleaning make sure the
blade is retracted after use. Danger of
injury.
15
Warning and safety instructions
Disposal of your old appliance
Before throwing an old appliance
away, switch off and disconnect it
from the power supply. Cut off and
render any plug useless. This should
be done by a competent person.
The manufacturer cannot be held
liable for damage caused by
non-compliance with these Warning
and Safety instructions.

Before using for the first time
General notes
A data plate for your appliance is
supplied with this documentation. It
should be stuck into the space
provided at the end of the instruction
book.
On cookers with the "system lock"
function:
The system lock must be switched off in
order to operate the cooking zones.
Consult the operating instruction
booklet for the cooker for details on
how to do this.
17
Before using for the first time
Cleaning and heating up for
the first time
Before using for the first time proceed
as follows:
Ceramic hobs
Clean the ceramic surface with a
^
damp cloth only, and then wipe dry.
Do not use washing up liquid on the
ceramic surface as it can leave a
blue sheen on the surface which
may be difficult to remove.
Metal components have a protective
coating which may give off a slight
smell when the hob is heated up for the
first time. The smell and any vapours
will dissipate after a short time and do
not indicate a faulty connection or
appliance defect.
Hobs with solid hotplates
To allow the protective anti-corrosion
^
coating on the hotplates to harden,
operate the hotplates for about 5
minutes on the highest setting without
any pans on them.
The hob may give off a slight smell the
first time it is used. It is important to
ensure that the room is well ventilated.
18
Operation
Switching on and off
The ceramic hobs have up to two
cooking zones with extended areas,
depending on the model. The controls
will vary from model to model.
The control for the front left cooking
zone and the rear right cooking zone
can only be turned so far. These
cooking zones are switched on by
turning the corresponding control
clockwise to the required setting, and
they are switched off by turning the
control anti-clockwise back to "0".
The control for the rear left cooking
zone and the front right cooking zone
can be turned 360°. These cooking
zones are switched on by turning the
corresponding control clockwise or
anti-clockwise to the required setting,
and they are switched off by turning the
control clockwise or anti-clockwise
back to "0".
When a cooking zone is switched on,
the indicator lamp for the cooking
zones S lights up on the hob fascia or
on the cooker.
Residual heat indicator
(Ceramic hobs only)
When a cooking zone is switched on,
e.g. front left, the appropriate residual
heat indicator lights up in the display
when the zone has reached a certain
temperature.
The residual heat indicator will switch
off after the cooking zone has been
switched off once the temperature has
dropped to a safe level.
Do not touch the cooking zones or
place any heat-sensitive items on
them whilst they are still hot.
Danger of burning, and fire hazard.
Setting the power level
When a cooking zone is switched on,
this automatically activates Auto
heat-up (see relevant section).
If your appliance has Auto heat-up (see
"Cooking zone data"), start cooking at
the highest setting, and then turn the
heat down to the required level.

Operation
Heat-up time
in minutes
As the higher continued cooking
settings are generally used for frying
food, only a relatively short heat-up time
is needed to heat up the pan initially.
The continued cooking setting can be
increased during the heat-up phase,
and the heat-up time then alters
automatically. Reducing the continued
cooking level automaticallly switches off
Auto heat-up.
To switch off Auto heat-up:

Operation
Switching on an extended area
Depending on the model of hob, the
outer circle of a double circle zone or
the extended cooking zone can be
switched on to provide an extended
cooking area when cooking with larger
pans.
Proceed as follows:
Turn the cooking zone control
^
clockwise past "12" as far as it will
go.
Then turn the control anti-clockwise
^
back to the required setting.
Switch the extended cooking zone off
by turning the control back to the “0”
position.
22
Operation
Warming zone
(on certain models only)
The warming zone is operated by a
sensor.
For reasons of safety, two sensors have
to be activated to switch the zone on,
and only one needs to be activated to
switch it off.
To switch the warming zone on:
First press the $ sensor.
^
The indicator lamp b for the warming
zone will flash.
To switch the warming zone off:
Press the s or $ sensor.
^
The indicator lamp goes out. The
residual heat indicator remains on until
the warming zone is cool enough to
touch.
Do not touch or place any heat
sensitive objects on the warming
zone while the residual heat display
indicator is still on. Danger of
burning, and fire hazard.
Please note: the residual heat
display indicator does not light up
after a power cut, even if the
warming area is still hot.
Make sure that the sensors are kept
clean, and that items are not placed
on top of them. This could lead to
inadvertent operation.
Never place hot pans over the
sensors. The electronic unit
underneath could get damaged.
^
Then press the s sensor.
The indicator lamp b will light up to
show that the warming zone is switched
on. Approx. 8 minutes after switching
on, the residual heat indicator a will
light up.

Operation
Suitable pans
For optimum energy consumption
–
during cooking, only pans with flat or
very slightly concave bases should
be used. When the pan is hot, the
base should rest evenly on the hob.
Uneven bases will lengthen cooking
time. Check for suitability when
purchasing new pans.
coldhot
– Check that the diameter of the pan
base is wide enough for the cooking
zone so that heat is not lost
unnecessarily. Please note that the
maximum diameter quoted by
manufacturers often refers to the
diameter of the top rim of the pan.
The diameter of the base (generally
smaller) is more important.
Energy saving tips
Use a pan lid whenever possible to
–
minimise heat loss.
uncoveredcovered
When cooking for a long time, switch
–
the cooking zone off about 5 to 10
minutes before the end of the
cooking time. In this way use is made
of the residual heat.

24
Operation
System lock
(only with relevant cookers)
Depending on model, your appliance
may be fitted with a system lock (see
operating instructions for cooker).
This prevents the cooking zones from
being switched on unintentionally.
The system lock can only be switched
on when the cooking zones are
switched off. Consult the operating
instruction booklet supplied with your
cooker for details on how to do this.
The system lock does not affect the
operation of the warming zone.
25
Operation
Safety switch-off
(with certain models only; see "Cooking
zone data")
If one of the cooking zones is heated
for an unusually long period of time
(see chart), and the power settings are
not altered, the hob will switch itself off
automatically.
If more than one cooking zone is
switched on, the cooking zone with the
highest setting determines the
maximum operating time.

Operation
Overheating protection
Each cooking zone has a safety
switch-off feature (internal temperature
limiter). This automatically switches off
the heating elements in the cooking
zone before it overheats. Once the
cooking zone has cooled down to a
safe level the heating will automatically
switch back on again.
Overheating can be caused by:
a cooking zone being switched on
–
without a pan on it
heating up an empty pan
–
the base of a pan not sitting evenly
–
on the cooking zone
the pan not conducting heat properly
–
On ceramic hobs you can tell that the
overheating protection has activated
because the heating switches on and
off even when the highest setting is
selected.
27
Cleaning and care
General tips
The appliance should be cleaned
regularly, preferably after each use.
Allow the appliance to cool down
before cleaning. Clean as described in
"Ceramic hobs" or "Hobs with solid
hotplates".
Do not use a steam cleaner to clean
this appliance. The steam could
reach electrical components and
cause a short circuit. Pressurised
steam could also cause permanent
damage to the surface and to other
components, for which the
manufacturer cannot accept liability..
Never use cleaning agents
containing alkalines / soda, acids or
chlorides, oven cleaning sprays,
dishwasher detergent or abrasive
cleaning agents, e.g. hard brushes,
scouring pads or steel wool.
You should also not use sponges
etc. which have preveiously been
used with abrasive cleaning agents.
These would damage the surface
material.
28
Cleaning and care
Ceramic hobs
Do not use any sharp pointed
objects which could damage the
seal between the ceramic surface
and the surrounding frame and
between the frame and the worktop.
Do not use washing up liquid on the
ceramic surface as it can leave a
blue sheen which may be difficult to
remove.
The ceramic surface can be cleaned
using a proprietary cleaning agent
for ceramic surfaces. Follow the
manufacturer’s instructions on the
packaging.
Ensure that every trace of cleaner
has been removed from the surface
by wiping the cooking zones
carefully with a damp cloth. Any
remaining trace could have a
damaging effect on the hob when
heated up.
After cleaning, the hob must be
thoroughly dried with a soft cloth to
prevent a build up of limescale
deposits.
To prevent the risk of spillages etc.
burning on, remove any soiling as
quickly as possible and ensure that
pan bases are clean, dry and free of
grease.
Once the appliance has cooled down
wipe soiling off using a damp cloth.
Stubborn soiling is best removed with a
shielded scraper blade.
Then apply a proprietary cleaning
agent for ceramic surfaces using a soft
cloth or kitchen paper towel. This way
any limescale deposits, caused for
example by water boiling over and
metallic marks (aluminium deposits) are
removed.
If desired you could use a cleaning
agent with a protective additive
designed to prevent water marks and
smears adhering to the surface.
Finally wipe the hob surface with a
damp cloth and then dry it with a clean
soft cloth.
Should any sugar, plastic oraluminium foil spill or fall on to the hob
while it is in use, first switch off the hob.
Then immediately, while the surface is
still hot, use a shielded scraper blade
to scrape off the sugar, plastic or
aluminium foil, taking care not to burn
yourself.
Allow the hob to cool down and then
clean as described above with a
suitable proprietary ceramic hob
cleaner.
29
Cleaning and care
Appliances with aluminium frames (see
data plate) are prone to scratching,
alkali and acid damage. Take care
when cleaning the aluminium frames.
Do not use cleaning agents for
stainless steel or descaling agents on
these surfaces. Soiling should be wiped
off as soon as possible after using the
appliance. If the soiling is left for a long
time it can have a damaging effect on
the aluminium surfaces. Intensive
cleaning with proprietary ceramic
cleaners can cause the frames to take
on a shiny appearance.
30
Cleaning and care
Hobs with solid hotplates
Hotplates
Remove light soiling with a damp cloth.
Soak or scrape off baked or hardened
spills.
Occasional treatment with a thin film of
oil, or proprietary cleaner for solid
hotplates is recommended.
Abrasive cleaning agents can be
used on the hotplates, however they
must not be used on the hotplate
surrounds or the stainless steel
trough.
Moisture or dirt must not penetrate
the hotplate interior.
Damp hotplates should be switched
on at full power for a short time to
dry them off and avoid corrosion.
Hotplate surrounds
Clean the hotplate surrounds using a
non-abrasive mild cream cleaner or
proprietary cleaner for stainless steel.
Stainless steel trough
Clean the trough with a soft sponge,
and warm soapy water or with a
non-abrasive stainless steel cleaning
agent.
If desired you could use a suitable
proprietary cleaning agent with a
protective additive designed to prevent
water marks and smears adhering to
the surface. Apply sparingly on a soft
cloth with an even pressure onto the
clean trough.
Thoroughly remove salty foods or
liquids from the hob as soon as
possible to avoid the risk of
corrosion.

Problem solving guide
Repairs to electrical appliances
must only be carried out by a
suitably qualified and competent
person in accordance with local and
national safety regulations. Repairs
and other work by unqualified
persons could be dangerous. The
manufacturer cannot be held liable
for unauthorised work.

has been triggered (see "Overheating
protection").
... the food in the pan hardly heats up
or does not heat up at all when the
Auto heat-up function is switched on
What to do if ...
... the appliance does not heat up
when switched on
Check whether
– the system lock function (only with
certain cookers) is activated. Consult
the operating instruction booklet
supplied with the cooker for details
on how to switch this off.
– the mains fuse has blown. If the fuse
has blown, contact an electrician or
the Service department.
... the appliance suddenly switches
itself off.
One of the cooking zones has probably
been on for too long (see "Safety
switch-off").
This could be because:
the pan is not conducting heat
–
properly
– there is too much food in the pan.
Select a higher continued cooking
setting next time or start cooking at the
highest setting and then turn down to a
lower setting manually later on.

Installation
Safety instructions for
installation
Fit the wall units and extractor hood
before fitting the hob to avoid
damaging the appliance.
The veneer or laminate coatings of
worktops (or adjacent kitchen
units) must be treated with 100 °C
heat-resistant adhesive which will not
dissolve or distort.
Any backmoulds must be of
heat-resistant material.
This equipment may only be
installed in mobile installations
such as ships, caravans, aircraft etc. if
a risk assessment of the installation has
been carried out by a suitably qualified
engineer.
The hob may not be built in over a
fridge, freezer, dishwasher,
washing machine or tumble dryer.
After installing the hob, ensure that
the underside of the appliance is
not accessible. In some cases a front
panel and a protective shelf must be
fitted (see "Protective shelf").
Observe carefully the safety
distances given on the following
pages.
Do not use any sealant except
where expressly instructed to do
so. The sealing strip under the edge of
the top part of the hob provides a
sufficient seal for the worktop (see
"Seal").
All dimensions in this instruction booklet
are given in mm.
Make sure that the cable for the
hob cannot be damaged by any
mechanical obstruction.
These hobs may only be combined
with certain cookers and control
units from the manufacturer's range.
The manufacturer cannot guarantee
trouble-free operation if the appliance is
operated in combination with
appliances other than those quoted by
the manufacturer as being suitable.
34
Safety distance above the hob
A minimum safety distance must be
maintained between the hob and the
cooker hood above it. See the
manufacturer’s operating and
installation instructions for details.
If the manufacturer's instructions are
not available for the cooker hood, a
minimum safety distance of at least
760 mm must be maintained. For any
flammable objects, e.g. utensil rails,
wall units etc. a minimum distance of at
least 760 mm must be maintained
between it and the hob below.
Installation
When two or more appliances are
installed together below a cooker
hood, e.g. an electric hob and a gas
wok combiset, which have different
safety distances given in their
installation instructions, you should
select the greater distance of the
two.
35
Installation
Safety distances to the sides of the
hob
Ideally the hob should be installed with
plenty of space on either side. There
may be a wall at the rear and a tall unit
or wall at one side. On the other side,
however, no unit or divider should stand
higher than the hob (see illustrations).
The following minimum distances
should be adhered to for safety
reasons:
50 mm to the right or left of the
–
worktop cut-out to the nearest piece
of furniture (e.g. tall unit).
– 50 mm from the worktop cut-out to
the rear wall.

Installation
Safety distance when installing the appliance on a wall with additional niche
cladding
There must be a minimum distance of 50 mm between the niche cladding and the
worktop cut-out.
This distance is only necessary for niche cladding made of wood or any other
combustible material. For non-combustible materials (metal, ceramic tiles or
similar), this dimension can be reduced by the thickness of the niche cladding
material. Materials can warp or distort when subjected to high temperatures.

Preparing the worktop
Make the worktop cut-out following
^
the dimensions applicable.
Remember to maintain a minimum
safety distance of 50 mm from the
back wall, as well as from any side
wall to the right or left of the hob (see
"Safety instructions for installation").
Seal the cut surfaces with a suitable
^
heat-resistant sealant to avoid
swelling caused by moisture.
Installation
If during installation the corners of
the frame are not flush with the
worktop surface, the corner radius
(max R4) can be carefully scribed to
fit.

Using both hands, press down
^
evenly on the sides of the hob until it
clicks into position. When doing this
make sure that the seal under the
hob sits flush with the worktop on all
sides. This is important to ensure an
effective seal all round. Do not use
sealant.
^ Connect the appliance to the mains
electricity supply, and then check
that the hob works.
The hob can now only be removed
with a special tool.

Installation
Protective shelf
After installing the hob, you need to
make sure that the underside of the
appliance cannot be accessed or
touched.
A fascia panel and a protective shelf
must be fitted if:
– the appliance is wider than the oven,
cooker or control unit.
– the appliance and the built-under
oven, cooker or control unit are offset
from one another.
A minimum distance of 55 mm is
required between the upper surface of
the worktop and the protective shelf.
A gap of 10 mm must be maintained
between the shelf and the rear wall.
Sealant
Do not use any sealant unless
expressly instructed to do so. The
sealing strip under the edge of the top
part of the hob provides a sufficient
seal for the worktop.
Do not use sealant between the
frame of the top part of the hob and
the worktop.
This could cause difficulties if the
hob ever needs to be taken out for
servicing and possibly result in
damage to the hob frame or the
worktop.
46
Installation
Connecting the hob to the
cooker/control unit
The cable for the appliance has a plug
connector at the end of it which must
be connected up to the cooker/control
unit.
The earth cable must also be fed into
the plug connector.
The cooker/control unit also have
connector sockets.
The connector plugs and sockets are
designed so that they cannot be
switched round or altered.
Do not force the connector.
Hobs with a warming zone
The EMV earth cable - on the
underside of the hob must be fixed to
the appliance with the cable tie.
47
Installation
Electrical connection
All electrical work should be carried out
by a competent person, in strict
accordance with national and local
safety regulations.
The voltage and rated load are given
on the data plate. Please ensure that
these match the household mains
supply.
After the appliance has been built in, a
check must be made that all electrical
parts are shielded.
Connection for each appliance should
be made via a suitable isolator, which
complies with national and local safety
regulations and which is accessible
after the appliance has been built in.
For extra safety it is advisable to install
a residual current device (RCD), with a
trip current of 30 mA.
Ensure power is not restored to the
appliance while installation work is
being carried out.
