Warning and Safety instructions

Technical safety

The coolant system is tested for leaks. This appliance complies
with statutory safety requirements and the appropriate EU guidelines.
This refrigeration appliance contains the coolant Isobutane
(R600a), a natural gas which is environmentally friendly. The coolant does not damage the ozone layer and does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. The use of this coolant has, however, led to a slight increase in the noise level of the appliance. In addition to the noise of the compressor, you might be able to hear the coolant flowing around the cooling circuit. Unfortunately, this cannot be avoided, but it does not affect the performance of the refrigeration appliance. When transporting and installing the refrigeration appliance, ensure that no parts of the cooling circuit are damaged. Splashes of coolant can damage the eyes. In the event of damage:
– Avoid naked flames or anything which creates a spark. – Disconnect the refrigeration appliance from the mains electricity
supply.
– Ventilate the room where the refrigeration appliance is located for
several minutes.
– Contact the Miele Customer Service Department.
The more coolant there is in a refrigeration appliance, the larger
the room it should be installed in. In the event of a leakage, if the appliance is in a small room, there is the danger of combustible gases building up. For every 11 g of coolant at least 1m3 of room space is required. The amount of coolant in the appliance is stated on the data plate inside the appliance.
6
Warning and Safety instructions
To avoid the risk of damage to the appliance, make sure that the
connection data (fuse rating, frequency and voltage) on the data plate corresponds to the household supply. Check that this is the case before connecting the appliance. Consult a qualified electrician if in any doubt.
The electrical safety of this appliance can only be guaranteed
when correctly earthed. It is essential that this standard safety requirement is met. If in any doubt please have the electrical installation tested by a qualified electrician.
Reliable and safe operation of this appliance can only be assured
if it has been connected to the mains electricity supply.
If the electrical connection cable is faulty it must only be replaced
by a Miele authorised service technician to protect the user from danger.
Do not connect the appliance to the mains electrical supply by a
multi-socket adapter or extension lead. These are a fire hazard and do not guarantee the required safety of the appliance.
If moisture gets into electrical components or into the mains con-
nection cable, it could cause a short circuit. Therefore, do not operate this refrigeration appliance in areas which are exposed to moisture (e.g in a garage or utility room).
This appliance must not be used in a non-stationary location (e.g.
on a ship).
Do not use a damaged appliance. It could be dangerous. Check
the appliance for visible signs of damage.
For safety reasons, this appliance may only be used after it has
been built in.
The appliance must be isolated from the electricity supply during
installation, maintenance and repair work.
7
Warning and Safety instructions
Unauthorised installation, maintenance and repairs can cause
considerable danger for the user. Installation, maintenance and repairs must only be carried out by a Miele authorised technician.
While the appliance is under warranty, repairs should only be un-
dertaken by a Miele authorised service technician. Otherwise the warranty is invalidated.
Miele can only guarantee the safety of the appliance when genu-
ine original Miele replacement parts are used. Faulty components must only be replaced by Miele spare parts.
8
Warning and Safety instructions

Correct use

The appliance is designed for use within a certain climate range
(ambient temperatures), and should not be used outside this range. The climate range for your appliance is stated on the data plate inside the appliance. Installing it in a room with too low an ambient temperature, e.g. a garage, will lead to the appliance switching off for longer periods so that it cannot maintain the required temperature.
Do not cover or block the air vents as this could impair the effi-
ciency of the appliance, increase the electricity consumption and could cause damage to the components.
If storing food which contains a lot of fat or oil in the appliance or
the door, make sure that it does not come into contact with plastic components as this could cause stress cracks or break the plastic.
Risk of fire and explosion. Do not store explosive materials in the
refrigeration appliance or any products containing propellants (e.g. spray cans). Electrical components can cause flammable mixes of gases to ignite.
Danger of explosion. Do not operate any electrical equipment (e.g.
an electric ice-cream maker) inside the refrigeration appliance. Danger of sparking and explosion.
Observe the manufacturer's “use-by” dates and storage instruc-
tions given on food to avoid the risk of food poisoning. Storage times will depend on several factors, including the freshness and quality of the food, as well as the temperature at which it is stored.
Only use genuine original Miele accessories and spare parts with
this appliance. Using accessories or spare parts from other manufacturers will invalidate the warranty, and Miele cannot accept liability.
9
Warning and Safety instructions

Cleaning and care

Do not use any oils or grease on the door seals, as these will
cause the seals to deteriorate and become porous with time.
Do not use a steam cleaning appliance to clean or defrost this ap-
pliance. Steam could reach electrical components and cause a short circuit.
Sharp edged or pointed objects will damage the evaporator, caus-
ing irreversible damage to the appliance. Do not use sharp edged or pointed objects to
– remove frost and ice, – separate frozen foods or remove ice trays.
Do not place electric heaters or candles in the appliance to de-
frost it. These can damage the plastic parts.
Do not use defrosting sprays or de-icers, as they could contain
substances which could damage the plastic parts or which might cause the build-up of gases and pose a danger to health.

Transport

Always transport the appliance in an upright position and in its ori-
ginal transport packaging to avoid damage in transit.
Danger of injury and damage to the appliance. The refrigeration
appliance is very heavy and must be transported by two people.
10
Warning and Safety instructions

Disposal of your old appliance

If your old refrigeration appliance has a door lock, destroy it. This
will prevent the risk of children playing accidentally locking themselves in and endangering their lives.
Splashes of coolant can damage the eyes. Be careful not to dam-
age any part of the pipework whilst awaiting disposal, e.g. by
– puncturing the coolant channels in the condenser, – bending any pipework, or – scratching the surface coating.

The oil in the compressor can be fatal if swallowed or if it penet-
rates the airways.
11

Caring for the environment

Disposal of the packing material
The packaging is designed to protect the appliance from damage during transportation. The packaging materials used are selected from materials which are environmentally friendly for disposal and should be recycled.
Recycling the packaging reduces the use of raw materials in the manufacturing process and also reduces the amount of waste in landfill sites.
Disposing of your old appliance
Electronic and electrical appliances contain many valuable materials. They also contain certain materials, compounds and components which were essential for their correct functioning and safety. These could be hazardous to your health and to the environment if disposed of with general waste or if handled incorrectly. Please do not, therefore, dispose of your old appliance with general waste.
Instead, please make use of officially designated collection and disposal points to dispose of and recycle electrical and electronic appliances in your local community, with your dealer or with Miele. By law, you are solely responsible for deleting any personal data from the appliance prior to disposal.
12
Take care not to damage your refrigeration appliance’s pipework before or during transportation to an authorised collection depot. This is to ensure that coolant in the cooling circuit and oil in the compressor is contained, and will not leak into the environment.
Please ensure that your old appliance poses no risk to children while being stored prior to disposal. For further information, see “Warning and Safety instructions” in these operating and installation instructions.

Clean the refrigeration appliance and
leave the door ajar to air the appliance and avoid odours building up inside.
21

The correct temperature

It is very important to set the correct temperature for storing food in the appliance. Bacteria will cause food which is not stored at the correct temperature to deteriorate rapidly. Temperature influences the growth rate of these bacteria. Reducing the temperature reduces their growth rate.
The temperature in the refrigeration appliance will rise:
– The more often the appliance door is
opened and the longer it is kept open
– The more food that is stored in it
– The warmer the food is which is be-
ing put into it
– The higher the ambient temperature
surrounding the refrigeration appliance. This refrigeration appliance is designed for use within specific ambient temperatures (climate range). Do not use in ambient temperatures for which it is not designed.

... in the refrigerator section and in the PerfectFresh Pro zone

We recommend a temperature of 4°C in the refrigerator section.
The temperature in the PerfectFresh Pro zone is controlled automatically and maintained at 0 to 3°C.

Automatic temperature distribution (DynaCool)

The fan switches on automatically when the cooling system for the refrigerator switches on. It distributes the temperature in the appliance to all areas more evenly so that all the food will be chilled to about the same degree.
22
The correct temperature

Temperature display

In normal operation the temperature display shows the average, current temperature in the refrigerator.
Depending on the ambient temperature and the temperature setting, it can take the appliance a few hours to reach the temperature required and for this temperature to then be shown as a constant temperature in the display.

Setting the temperature

Use the two sensors underneath the
display to set the temperature.
By touching the sensor
– the temperature will get colder,
– Leaving a finger on the sensor
changes the temperature continuously.
Approximately 5 seconds after the last time a sensor has been touched, the current temperature inside the appliance is automatically shown.
Or
Touch the OK sensor to confirm your
selection.
If you have adjusted the temperature,
wait for approx. 6 hours if the appliance is not very full and for approx. 24 hours if the appliance is full before
checking the temperature display, as it will take this long for the appliance to give an accurate reading.
If, after this time, the temperature is
still too high or too low, you will need to adjust it again.

Temperature range

The temperature can be adjusted from 3°C to 9°C.
– the temperature will get warmer.
The temperature being set will flash in the display.
The following information shows in the display while the sensors are being touched:
– Touching a sensor once: the last
temperature selected flashes.
– Each subsequent touch of the
sensor: adjusts the temperature shown in 1°C steps.
23

Storing food in the refrigerator section

Risk of explosion due to flam-
mable mixes of gases. Electrical components can cause
flammable mixes of gases to ignite. Do not store explosive materials in
the refrigeration appliance or any products containing propellants (e.g. spray cans).
Risk of damage due to greasy or
oily foods. If storing food which contains a lot of
fat or oil in the refrigeration appliance or the appliance door, make sure that it does not come into contact with plastic components as this could cause stress cracks or break the plastic.
Make sure that no fat or oil leaks onto the plastic parts of the refrigeration appliance.

Different storage zones

Due to natural air circulation, there are different temperature zones in the refrigerator section.
Cold, heavy air sinks to the lowest section of the refrigeration section. Make use of the different zones when placing food in the appliance.
Tip: To allow air to circulate efficiently, do not pack food too closely together in the appliance.
If there is insufficient air circulation, the cooling performance will decrease and energy consumption will increase.
Do not cover the fan in the rear wall of the appliance.
Tip: Do not store food in such a way that it touches the rear wall of the refrigerator section as it may freeze to the rear wall.
This appliance has automatic Dynamic cooling, which helps to keep an even temperature when the fan is running, making the difference between the various zones is less pronounced.

Warmest area

The warmest area in the refrigerator section is at the top in the front area and in the door. Use this for storing butter and cheese.

Coldest area

The coldest area in the refrigerator section is directly above the PerfectFresh Pro zone dividing plate and at the back of the appliance. The temperature in the PerfectFresh Pro zone compartments is even colder.
Use these areas in the refrigerator and in the PerfectFresh Pro zone for all delicate and highly perishable food, e.g.
– fish, meat, poultry,
– sausage products, ready meals,
– dishes or baked goods containing
eggs or cream,
– fresh dough, cake mixtures, pizza or
quiche dough,
– soft cheese and other dairy products,
– pre-packed vegetables and other
fresh food with a label stating it should be kept at a temperature of approx. 4 °C.
33
Storing food in the refrigerator section
Food which is not suitable for storage in the refrigerator section
Not all food is suitable for refrigeration at temperatures below 5°C, because it may be sensitive to cold. Depending on the type of food, the appearance, consistency, flavour and/or vitamin content may be altered if stored at too cold a temperature.
Foods which are sensitive to cold include:
– Pineapples, avocados, bananas,
pomegranates, mangoes, melons, papayas, passionfruit, citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, mandarins, grapefruits
– Fruit (which is not yet ripe)
– Aubergines, cucumbers, potatoes,
peppers, tomatoes, courgettes
– Hard cheeses (e.g. Parmesan, moun-
tain cheese)

Notes on buying food

The freshness of food when first placed in the appliance is an important factor in determining how long it stays fresh, and how long it can be kept in the appliance. Take into account the use-by date and the correct storage temperature. Time out of the refrigerator, e.g. transporting food in a warm car, should be kept to a minimum.
Tip: Take an insulated cool bag when shopping, and load food in the appliance as soon as possible.

Storing food correctly

Food should generally be stored covered or packaged in the refrigerator section (there are some exceptions to this rule in the PerfectFresh Pro zone see below). This will prevent food smells from affecting other foods, food from drying out, and also any crosscontamination of bacteria. This is especially important for storing proteinbased food such as meat or fish. The growth of bacteria, such as salmonella, can be avoided by setting the correct temperature and maintaining good standards of hygiene.
34

Storing food in the PerfectFresh Pro zone

The PerfectFresh Pro zone provides ideal storage conditions for fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and dairy products. Food stays fresh considerably longer while retaining both flavour and vitamins.
The temperature in the PerfectFresh Pro zone is maintained automatically at between 0 and 3°C. While lower than the temperature in a standard refrigerator, this is the optimum temperature range for storing fresh food which is not sensitive to cold. The deterioration process is decelerated at this temperature range so food can be stored without loss of freshness for considerably longer than in a standard refrigerator.
The humidity level in the PerfectFresh Pro zone can also be regulated to suit the food being stored. Food retains its own moisture if stored at a higher humidity and so does not dry out as quickly. This allows it to stay crisp and fresh for longer.
The PerfectFresh Pro zone is divided into two areas:
The Info system (shown here in sections) above the PerfectFresh Pro zone helps you to choose the correct compartment and the appropriate setting in the humidity controlled compartment.
– The temperature is between
0and3°C in the top dry compart- ment and the humidity level is not increased. Use this compartment to store fish, meat, dairy products and any other type of food, providing it is wrapped.
Remember that the fresher the food when placed in the appliance, the longer it will stay fresh.
Take food out of the PerfectFresh Pro zone approx. 30to60minutes before using it. The aroma and taste do not fully develop until the food has reached room temperature.
– The temperature is between 0-3°C
in the bottom humidity controlled compartment (depending on model, there may be one or more of this type of compartment). Depending on the position of the regulator, the humidity level is not increased or increased /. Fruit and vegetables can be stored in this compartment with the humidity increased.
Each type of food has its own characteristics which determine the specific storage conditions it requires.
35
Storing food in the PerfectFresh Pro zone

Dry compartment

The dry compartment is ideal for storing foods which perish easily, such as
– fish and seafood;
– meat, poultry and sausages;
– salads and lettuce;
– dairy products, e.g. yogurt, cheese,
cream, quark etc;
– you can also use the dry compart-
ment to store all kinds of food, providing it is wrapped.
The main advantage of the dry compartment is the low temperature (rather than the humidity). The humidity in the dry compartment is approximately the same as in a standard refrigerator.
Please note that food rich in protein deteriorates faster than other types of food. Shellfish, for example, deteriorates faster than fish, and fish deteriorates faster than meat.
Always keep these foods covered or
wrapped.
Humidity-controlled compartment, /
Humidity level not increased
At the setting the humidity controlled compartment becomes a dry compartment - the regulator opens the vents in the compartment to let the moisture escape (see “Dry compartment”).
Increased humidity/
With the regulator at the or setting, the humidity-controlled compartment is suitable for storing fruit and vegetables:
– Select the setting if storing a large
quantity of fruit and vegetables (the regulator partially closes the vents in the compartment so that some of the moisture already present is retained).
– Select the setting if using the hu-
midity-controlled compartment to store only a small quantity of fruit and vegetables (the regulator closes the vents in the compartment completely so that all of the moisture already present is retained).
36
Tip: If the humidity level is too high and a lot of moisture has collected in the compartment, select the setting. If the humidity level is too low, place the food in airtight packaging.
The humidity level greatly depends on the type and quantity of food being stored, if stored unwrapped.
Storing food in the PerfectFresh Pro zone
High humidity in the humidity-controlled compartment can cause condensate to build up on the floor of the compartment as well as beneath the lid.
Wipe off any condensate with a cloth.
Note for test institutes:
When measuring energy consumption in accordance with the standard, the regulator in the humidity-controlled compartment should be set to the setting (“humidity not increased”).

Regulating the humidity level in the humidity-controlled compartment

A slide control is used to regulate the amount of moisture in the humidity controlled compartment by setting it to, or .
Push the regulator back as far as it
will go and then release it slowly.
The regulator will click into the setting automatically
To select the or setting, push
the regulator back and release it again to engage it in the or position.
37
Storing food in the PerfectFresh Pro zone
The following tips may help if you find that food you have stored does not keep well (e.g. food becomes limp or wilts after only being stored for a short time):
Only use the appliance for storing
fresh food. The condition of the food when it is first placed in the appliance is an important factor in determining how long it stays fresh.
Clean the PerfectFresh Pro compart-
ments before storing food in them.
Allow very moist food to drain before
placing it in the PerfectFresh Pro zone
Do not store food which is sensitive
to cold in the PerfectFresh Pro zone (see “Food which is not suitable for storing in the refrigerator”).
Select the correct PerfectFresh Pro
compartment as well as the correct position for the humidity controlled compartment regulator (humidity not increased or humidity increased).
Increased humidity / in the hu-
midity controlled compartment is achieved via the moisture present in the food being stored, i.e. the more food stored in the compartment, the higher the humidity. If too much moisture has gathered on the floor of the compartment and the food has been affected, select the setting. Otherwise dry the floor and underneath the lid with a cloth and place a rack or similar item in the compartment so that moisture can then drip down. If the humidity level becomes too low at the setting, wrap the food in airtight packaging.
If you think that the temperature in
the PerfectFresh Pro zone is too high or too low, try regulating it by altering the temperature of the refrigerator section slightly by 1 to 2 °C. The temperature must be increased if ice crystals start to form on the floor of the PerfectFresh Pro zone as otherwise the cold temperature will damage the food.

Refrigerator section and PerfectFresh Pro zone

The refrigerator section and the PerfectFresh Pro zone defrost automatically.
Condensate and frost can build up on the back wall of the refrigerator section and the PerfectFresh Pro zone while the compressor is running. You do not need to remove this, as it will defrost and evaporate automatically with the warmth generated by the compressor.
The condensate drains through a channel and drain pipe into an evaporation system at the back of the refrigeration appliance.
Keep the condensate channel and drain hole clean to enable this. Condensate must be able to drain away unhindered at all times.

Defrosting

Installation

Installation

Danger of damage and injury
due to the refrigeration appliance tipping over.
This refrigeration appliance is very heavy and can tip forwards when the appliance door is open.
Keep the appliance door(s) shut until the refrigeration appliance has been built in and secured in its housing in accordance with these operating and installation instructions.
Fire risk and danger of damage
from appliances which give off heat. Appliances which give off heat can
catch fire and set fire to the refrigeration appliance.
This refrigeration appliance must not be installed underneath a hob.
Fire risk and danger of damage
from open flames. Open flames can set fire to the refri-
geration appliance. Keep open flames (e.g. a candle)
away from the refrigeration appliance.

Side-by-side combinations

As a general rule, refrigeration appliances should not be installed vertically or horizontally next to other such appliances so as to avoid a build-up of condensation between them and the damage this can cause.
Your refrigeration appliance must not be installed next to another refrigeration appliance (“side-by-side”), or above another one, because it is not equipped with built-in heating units in the side panels.
It can, however, be installed next to another refrigeration appliance with builtin heating as long as they are in separate niches. Please contact your Miele retailer to find out which appliances are suitable for this method of installation.

Installation

Location

This appliance should be installed in a dry, well-ventilated room.
When deciding where to install your refrigeration appliance please bear in mind that it will use more energy if installed near to a heater, a cooker or other appliance that gives off heat. Direct sunlight should also be avoided. The higher the room temperature, the longer the compressor runs and the higher the energy consumption is.
When installing the appliance, please note:
– The socket must be easily accessible
in an emergency, not concealed behind the appliance.
– The plug and cable must not touch
the rear of the appliance as they could be damaged by vibrations from the appliance.
– Do not plug in other appliances be-
hind this appliance.
Risk of damage due to high hu-
midity. In environments with high humidity,
condensation can build up on external refrigeration appliance panels, which can cause corrosion.
Install the refrigeration appliance in a dry and/or air-conditioned room with sufficient ventilation.
After installation, make sure that the appliance door closes properly, the ventilation gaps are not covered and that the refrigeration appliance has been installed in accordance with these operating and installation instructions.

Climate range

The appliance is designed for use within a certain climate range (ambient temperatures) and should not be used outside this range. The climate range of the appliance is stated on the data plate inside the appliance.
Climate range Ambient room
temperature
SN +10to +32°C
N +16to +32°C
ST +16to +38°C
T +16to +43°C
Operating in a room which is too cold will cause the compressor to switch off for too long, causing the internal temperature in the appliance to rise with the risk of food deteriorating and going off.

Ventilation

If the ventilation gaps given are
not observed, the compressor will run more frequently and for longer periods.
This will result in increased energy consumption and a higher operating temperature for the compressor. This may, in turn, cause damage to the compressor.
It is essential to observe the ventilation gaps given.
Air at the back of the appliance gets warm. The appliance housing unit must therefore be constructed to allow sufficient space for ventilation (see “Building-in dimensions”).
63
* I N S T A L L A T I O N *
Installation
– Air intake occurs via the plinth at
the bottom of the appliance and the air escapes at the top at the back of the housing unit.
The air inlet and outlet must not be covered or blocked in any way. They must also be regularly cleaned of dust.

Top ventilation gap

The ventilation gap at the top of the appliance can be constructed in different ways:
– A ventilation gap of at least 40mm
depth must be allowed for behind the appliance for air to circulate.
– The ventilation cross-sections in the
plinth, housing unit and above the appliance must each provide an unobstructed airflow of at least 200cm² to ensure that air can circulate without hindrance.
If ventilation grilles are to be inserted into the ventilation gaps, the ventilation gaps must be larger than 200cm². The unobstructed airflow of 200cm² is calculated by adding up the total area of ventilation openings in the grilles.
– Important! The appliance uses less
energy, the larger the ventilation gaps.

Furniture door panel

Horizontal and vertical gaps

Depending on the style of kitchen furniture the thickness and edge radius of the furniture door and the gap that runs around the door, vertically and horizontally, are specified.
It is essential to pay attention to the following!
–Horizontal gap
The gap between the appliance furniture door and the housing unit door above or below it must be at least 3mm.

– Vertical gap

If the gap between the appliance furniture door and the adjoining housing unit door or wall on the hinged side is too small, the appliance door could collide with the adjoining housing unit door or wall when opened.
It may be necessary to adjust the size of this gap to suit the thickness and edge radius of the appliance furniture door.

front of the appliance on the door opening side.
1. Position the sealing strip flush with the lower edge of the top connecting bracket.
2. Stick it down along its entire length.

Installing the appliance

If the appliance is pushed too far into the niche, the appliance doors may not close properly once the furniture door has been fitted. This can cause ice to build up, condensate to accumulate and lead to faults in the appliance. These can all lead to increased energy consumption.
Push the appliance into the buildingin niche making sure a gap of 42mm is maintained all round between the appliance carcase and the front of the housing unit side walls.
77
* I N S T A L L A T I O N *
Installation
Important for furniture with door fittings (e.g. stubs, seals, etc.).
Take the dimensions of the fittings into account.
Check to make sure there is a gap all round of 42mm to the front edges of the door fittings.
Pull the refrigeration appliance for-
wards by the appropriate dimension.
Tip: If possible, remove the door fittings and push the refrigeration appliance into the niche until all fixing brackets at the top and bottom are touching the front edge of the housing unit side wall.
Push the appliance into the niche un-
til all fixing brackets at the top and bottom are in line with the front edge of the housing unit side wall.

Installation

Electrical connection

The appliance is supplied with a mains cable and moulded plug ready for connection to an AC single-phase 220– 240V50Hz supply.
The fuse rating must be at least 10A.
This appliance must be connected to a suitable switched socket. The electrical installation must be in compliance with current local and national safety regulations, (e.g. VDE0100 in Germany / BS 7671 in the UK).
The socket must not be concealed behind the appliance and must be easily accessible so that the appliance can be quickly disconnected from the electrical supply in case of an emergency.
If the socket is no longer accessible after installation, an additional means of disconnection must be provided for all poles. Suitable means of disconnection include switches with an all-pole contact gap of at least 3mm. These include miniature circuit breakers, fuses and contactors (EN60335).
Do not connect the appliance to the mains electricity supply by an extension lead. Extension leads do not guarantee the required safety of the appliance (e.g. danger of overheating).
Do not connect the appliance to a stand-alone inverter such as those used with an autonomous energy source e.g. solar power. When the appliance is switched on, power surges could result in a safety switch-off. This could damage the electronic module. The appliance must not be used with so-called energy saving devices either. These reduce the amount of energy supplied to the appliance, causing it to overheat.
If the mains cable needs to be replaced, this must be performed by a qualified electrician.
The mains plug and mains connection cable must not come into contact with the back of the appliance as vibrations can cause damage to these components. This could result in a short circuit.
Do not plug in other appliances behind this appliance.
