Practical Microtomy
for Routine Histopathology

Microtomes for Histopathology:
Proven Concepts with Innovative Design
Leica always develops laboratory equipment in
close cooperation with end users to ensure that
their experiences are considered in the design of
all new instruments. This is also the case for our
new RM2200 series of microtomes: numerous
details offer comfortable and flexible solutions for
day-to-day practice, improving an already proven
concept and making them even more user-friendly.
Leica microtomes allow you to select between fully
motorized and semi-motorized or manual models.
Thanks to an exceptionally smooth-running handwheel, the motorized models can also be operated
manually, i.e. the user has a full two-in-one solution,
a motor-driven microtome that can be used manually
when the need arises.
The Leica Microsystems new microtome familiy is
ideally complemented by a comprehensive series
of laboratory instruments for specimen processing
in clinical histopathology and biomedical research
– examples are tissue processing and embedding
centers, the new high-quality Leica DB80 microtome blades, cryostats, fully-automated slide
stainers, coverslippers and, of course, the Leica
microscopes.

Comfort
Comfort
■A completely new, precise specimen orientation
makes specimen block re-alignment easy. When
the pins are fully extended the specimen is located
in the zero position.
■The spacious section waste tray reliably collects
sectioning debris. It is held in position by magnets
but can be easily removed for cleaning purposes.
■ A new optional accessory for the section
waste tray is a pair of special wrist cushions
which protect your wrists and make sectioning
more comfortable, particularly when working with
the instrument for several hours at a time.
■ To summarize, this means less user fatigue,
excellent sectioning results right from the start and
increased productivity in your laboratory.

Safety
Safety
■ The easy-to-exchange Leica universal cassette
clamps provide utmost flexibility to section specimens embedded in cassettes of any size – from
biopsy to super-mega cassettes.
■ Thin paraffin sections can be floated on the
surface of a newly-developed section floating
bath which can be attached to the knife holder.
The flattened sections can easily be picked up from
the surface of the water directly onto the microscope slides.
■An additional integrated lock mechanism locks the
handwheel and thus the specimen cylinder in the
uppermost position – an important contribution for
enhanced user safety when changing the specimen
or the knife.
■ Changing specimen blocks is now especially safe
with the new knife holder E equipped with a hinged
safety knife guard.
■ In addition, a new, extensive range of acces-
sories meets the specific requirements of any user .
Just a few examples:

cooling blocks – for installation on top of the instrument
housing
■ In addition, the overall ergonomic design helps
reduce symptoms of fatigue thus contributing to
increased work safety.
