Zum 100-jährigen Jubiläum der American Society of Cinematogra­phers setzt Leica dem Kino ein Denkmal: die Sonderedition Leica
M10-P “ASC 100 Edition”.

Die 1919 gegründete American Society of Cinematographers ist die
älteste Gemeinschaft von Filmschaffenden weltweit und vereint die
besten professionellen Cinematografen unserer Zeit. Genau wie Leica
prägt diese außergewöhnliche Vereinigung seit über 100 Jahren die
Sehgewohnheiten der Menschen quer durch alle Kulturen.

Oskar Barnack, ein begeisterter Cinematograf mit Vorliebe zur
Fotografie, hatte den Anspruch, die damaligen starren und schweren
Foto-Kameras von ihrer Last zu befreien. Er verwendete den in der
Cinematografie genutzten 35mm Kinofilm für Einzelbelichtungen.
Barnack verdoppelte das Format auf 24 x 36 mm und nutzte es in
waagerechter Ausrichtung. Er schrieb dazu: „Mikrokinoeinrichtung
fertig für Aufnahmen“. Die „Ur-Leica“ war erfunden und legte
1913/14 somit das Fundament der modernen Fotografie. Dies ist
eine der Entstehungsgeschichten der „Ur-Leica“. Die zweite spielte
sich in etwa so ab: Oskar Barnack war auf der Suche nach einem
Instrument zur Messung der Filmbelichtung. Ähnlich wie heute war es
zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts nicht ganz einfach, den Bildcharakter
einer Szene vor Beginn des Drehs zu prüfen. Um die richtige
Belichtung zu ermitteln, mussten Cinematografen damals einiges an
wertvollem Filmmaterial durch ihre unhandlichen 35mm-Kameras
laufen lassen.

Während Barnack also mit der Erfindung der ersten Kleinbildkamera
das Zeitalter der modernen Fotografie einläutete, sollte der Name
Leica untrennbar mit der cineastischen Kunst verschmelzen.

Die Leica M10-P “ASC 100 Edition”, greift die Idee der Szenenbegut­achtung mittels Kleinbildkamera auf und überträgt sie in die
Gegenwart.

Die Leica M10-P “ASC 100 Edition” ermöglicht es Filmschaffenden
den Bildcharakter und die Kadrierung einer Szene verlässlich,
aufwandslos und noch vor Drehbeginn zu interpretieren. Das Set der
Sonderedition besteht aus der Leica M10-P Kamera, dem Leica
Summicron-M 1:2/35 ASPH. Objektiv, dem Leica Visoflex (Typ 020)
und dem Leica M-PL-Mount. Ergänzt wird die Firmware der Kamera
mit zwei maßgeschneiderten Kino-Looks sowie einstellbaren
Bildformatrahmen.

THE M FOR CINEMATOGRAPHERS

With the M10-P “ASC 100 Edition”, Leica has created a fitting tribute
to the world of cinema on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of
the founding of the American Society of Cinematographers.

Founded in 1919, the American Society of Cinematographers is the
world’s oldest association for filmmakers, and unites the best
cinematographers of our times. Just like Leica, this extraordinary
society based in Hollywood has influenced and shaped the way
people of all cultures see the world for more than 100 years.

In the early 1919, Oskar Barnack, an enthusiastic cinematographer
with a love of photography, felt the need to relieve the burden of using
the then cumbersome still cameras. He took the 35mm strip motion
picture film - then exclusively utilized by cinematographers -and used
it for capturing individual exposures. Barnack doubled the frame size
to a horizontal format of 24 × 36 mm. As he wrote in his notebook at
the time, “Mikrokinoeinrichtung fertig für Aufnahmen” (micro cine
apparatus ready for filming). This records the invention of “Ur-Leica”,
which, in 1913/14, went on to lay the foundations for the develop­ment of 35mm photography as we know it today. That is one of the
stories about how the “Ur-Leica” came to be. The second story goes
like this: Oskar Barnack was looking for an instrument with which he
could conduct exposure tests for motion picture films. Similar to the
situation today, in the early years of the 20th century, it was far from
easy to check the visual and technical aspects of a scene before
shooting. Back then, cinematographers had to run lengths of costly
35mm film through their unwieldy cine cameras and develop it in
order to determine the correct exposure.

While Barnack’s invention of the first 35mm still camera rang in a
new era of photography, the name Leica was to become an
inseparable part of the art of creating moving pictures.

The Leica M10-P “ASC 100 Edition” continues Barnack’s ingenious
idea and translates it into modern terms.

The Leica M10-P “ASC 100 Edition” enables cinematographers to get
a first impression of a planned scene by reproducing two different
cine looks and displaying different cine frames in still pictures. For
the first time, it will be possible to deliver a foretaste of either to use
a more classical or a more contemporary cine look.
The set comprises a Leica M10-P camera, a Leica Summicron-M 35
f/2 ASPH. lens, a Leica Visoflex (Typ 020) and a Leica M-PL-Mount.
The customized camera firmware includes two specially tailored cine
look modes and cinematographic frame lines.
