The Kyocera FS-9520DN is a powerful workhorse designed for networked corporate departmental environments. If you need a network printer that can run at 50ppm, or more, the Kyocera FS-9520DN stands head and shoulders over the competition.
Depending on the country you live in, the recommended retail price for the entry-level Kyocera FS-9520DN is either on par with the main competitors (Europe and Canada) or around 15% more expensive (USA) than comparable network-ready devices. While the USA entry-level price looks a bit high, there are several mitigating factors which make the Kyocera FS-9520DN look like better value.
For a start there is the Kyocera FS-9520DN's 500,000 page photoconductor drum and imaging system, which leaves the competition far behind.
This device has an ultra long life imaging system so, on a day to day basis, the only item the user buys/replaces is relatively low cost bulk toner. In contrast, the nearest competing device uses all-in-one cartridges which contain the imaging system, developer and toner. While the competitor promotes its ease of cartridge swapping, the fact remains that when you replace the toner cartridge you also trash the unfinished drum and developer unit.
When printing very low toner coverage in documents, the price differential may not be great, but in today's highly graphical documents the trend is for pictoral documents with higher toner coverage, which results in a high cost per page on an all-in-one cartridge system.
Assuming an average 15% toner coverage and 600,000 pages, the Kyocera FS9520DN will require a single drum change versus its leading competitor which will require around 60 toner cartridge purchases; in contrast, the toner cartridges for the competitor could fill a small room!
Next there are useful capabilities including a 7 bin mailbox unit. The mailbox unit allows simpler sharing of the device because up to 7 users/departments can have their work output into their own dedicated mailbox from which they can collect it when they are are ready. On competing units you could find that the 7 departments' work gets mixed up - leading to either loss or damage of the completed work.
Once you hit 50ppm or need ledger/a3 sized paper the printer market divides. Some manufacturers produce lowcost 45ppm devices, but they cannot print onto larger than legal (8.5" x 14") paper. This means that if you want 50+ppm or ledger/A3 paper you can count the monochrome products on one hand.

The Control Panel:
The control panel is straightforward and easy to use, consisting of a Menu button, an Enter button and four directional arrow keys intended to help users navigate the menus. A large green Go button and smaller red Cancel button are also present and clearly marked.
Indicator lights flash for Ready, Data and Attention. In addition, a paper indicator light shows which paper cassette is being used to feed paper.
Connectivity:
Standard connections include 10/100 BaseTX Ethernet, a parallel port and a USB
2.0 connection.
The inclusion of USB 2.0 is a plus for a single user, because it transfers data at a significantly faster rate than USB 1.1, which is still offered on many devices currently on the market.
An optional Multiple Interface Connection (MIC) allows for simultaneous data transfer via up to four interfaces, with each interface having its ow n v irtual pri nt er.
Maintenance:
The Kyocera FS-9520DN has a 500,000page life developer and drum and a maximum monthly duty cycle advertised at up to 300,000 pages. The manufacturer rates the average monthly duty cycle at up to 55,000 pages.
The device comes with a starter toner cartridge which yields an advertised 20,000 pages @5% coverage.
Replacement toner cartridges are rated by the manufacturer at 40,000 pages @5% coverage.
Like other printers from this manufacturer, the Kyocera FS-9520DN features an ultra long life imaging system based on an amorphous silicon print drum. It is continually polished and reconditioned by tiny ceramic particles mixed into the “Ecotone” toner. This results in a drum that lasts much longer than most competing devices offer.
Warranty:
A one-year warranty is Included with purchase. Kyocera guarantees the drum and developer for a total of 3 years or 500,000 pages (whichever comes first), provided that the printer is used and cleaned according to the service instructions. An extended warranty (up to 5 years) is available at low cost.

The Kyocera FS-9520DN ships with three standard page description languages: KPDL, PCL5e emulation, and PCL-XL. KPDL is Kyocera’s own PostScript emulation, while PCL-XL is Kyocera’s emulation of PCL.
When loading the printer driver from the manufacturer’s CD, the setup routine installs all three drivers in one package.
The company promotes its “single driver” as a benefit, though users cannot switch page description languages from within the
driver itself. That said, the three drivers look similar and are simple to use.
To switch between the three included PDLs requires users to go to the PC’s Properties menu under the Windows Control Panel printer menu, where the option is available to switch drivers as a defaulted setting. Kyocera says that the driver auto switcheds between PDLs as needed, and the user or administrator selects what the default PDL is.

The KX driver is the manufacturer’s own proprietary print driver, and is the one from which users can select to print with PostScript 3 emulation (called KPDL) or PCL.
In the Administrator section of the Properties menu are some features that can prove useful, including the ability to require user authorization codes prior to printing (there are up to 100 account codes
possible), and to display job name, user name, and/or department on the front control panel while a document is printing.

Prologue/Epilogue:
An unusual feature in printer drivers, the Prologue/Epilogue tab in the printer driver main menu brings users to a menu that allows them to add electronic versions of pre-printed forms, such as invoices or letterhead, which can be merged with data sent from a workstation.
This data has to have first been created as a PRESCRIBE command file and stored on a regular Compact Flash Card, which is inserted into the Kyocera FS-9520DN, or it can be stored within the printer driver under the Prologue/Epilogue tab. System administrators can then use these files to create printer icons with the PRESCRIBE file embedded within the Prologue/Epilogue tab.
For example, a user who wants to print an invoice could print on the Invoice Form which has been stored on the Compact Flash Card or embedded in the Prologue/ Epilogue tab, without having to load preprinted stationery into the printer.
This can eliminate the necessity to print and store special forms, stationery or letterhead, and gives users the ability to update forms electronically. It also reduces network bandwidth since the forms are pre-stored on the flash card or embedded in the driver.

Cover Sheets:
Users can add cover sheets, slip sheets or transparency interleaving by choosing the Advanced button on the main Media tab.
This brings up a screen which lets users choose to add a front cover or front and back cover (print can be done on the front inside or front outside or back inside or
back outside) as well as allowing page inserts or transparency interleaving. Users can select the media type and source on this scree n as well. This is a convenient feature which will be appreciated by offices which routinely use letterhead on the first page of documents as well as environments which create a lot of booklets (note that this function is not available in the PCL 5e driver).

Finishing Options In The Printer Drivers:
The finishing options users can select under the Output tab are dynamically linked and related to the type of finisher that is installed.
For example, in the illustrations on this page, when the printer default is chosen as the output area, the driver autosenses that the only finishing options given are to collate or rotate collate and shows these options (see area marked with red).
However, when the finisher is selected, the driver lets the finishing options extend to include staple, offset and punch.

Direct PDF Print Utility:
Included with the purchase of the FS9520DN is a PDF Direct Print Utility, which allows users to print files as PDFs without having, or opening, the Adobe Acrobat application.
This is a nice extra, because PDFs are increasingly the file transfer method of choice (they are readable by the largest percentage of computer users). Being able to print PDFs directly can save users a step in the document production process.
Bandwith Use Between Print Drivers:
The Kyocera FS-9520DN’s three print drivers all produced different bandwidth results when tested with identical files.
The PCL-XL driver created about half the bandwidth of the other two drivers on average.
The KPDL driver created smaller files than the PCL5e driver did when printing word processing documents, though the PCL5e driver used less bandwidth than the KPDL one when processing a graphic PDF file.

The PCL Driver:
In addition to the print drivers included with the purchase of the Kyocera FS-9520DN, users can also download a PCL-only driver from the manufacturer’s web site. This can be used in companies that have IT managers who are reluctant to use anything other than “plain vanilla” PCL on their servers.
This print driver is very basic and lacks a number of features found in the other print drivers, but it is functional — and fits the “PCL-only” requirement of some workplaces.

KM-NET Viewer:
Included with the purchase of the Kyocera FS-9520DN is KM-NET Viewer, a network management software tool that is compatible with all Kyocera printers and MFPs (as well as those of other vendors using SNMP protocol). It allows users to check the settings of all printers on the network, amending them if necessary, from any Windows-based PC.
KM-NET Viewer can also be set to email administrators or other workers with alerts such as low toner or out of paper, which can mini m i ze dow ntime.
In Summary:
The Kyocera FS-9520DN is a workhorse of a printer for departments and workgroups. It has the highest standard and maximum paper capacity in its class and a robust maximum mo nt hly vol ume t hat can stand up to a lot of hard use.
Although it has a higher entry level price than some competing devices in some countries, its long life, low cost consumables, standard network capability and duplex printing offset the price compared to competing systems.
Another major plus is the breadth of finishing options offered for this device. Most dedicated printers do not have saddle-stitch booklet maker options, and many also lack stapling and hole punch capabilities. The Kyocera FS-9520DN offers the full range of finishing, and even has a 7-bin physical mailbox option for workgroups which need to separate output.
Overall, the Kyocera FS-9520DN has a lot to offer, particularly in environments where its ledger capability and finishing options will be used.
