BERTL Brand Survey — ©Data Level July-04
While this BERTL report concentrates specifically on an individual device and is designed to provide the reader with an independent perspective on its relative strengths, weaknesses and value proposition, the decision to buy, or not to buy, is not always “device-specific.” The brand behind the device and how it is perceived in the marketplace is also extremely important. T his is where BERTL Brand Surveys come into play.
BERTL speaks to product buyers on a regular basis. In additio n, BERTL conducts periodic surveys of the digital imaging marketplace. T he valuable feedback we receive from buyers and product resellers is incorporated into our reports, i n order to provide o ur subscribers with a perspective on the manufacturer behind the device.
The table below shows feedback received in BERTL’s latest survey of this manufacturer’s product(s). Note: Survey results change over time—the data level for this survey is shown at top.

The Kyocera FS-9520DN is a powerful workhorse designed for networked corporate departmental environments. If you need a network printer that can run at 50ppm, or more, the Kyocera FS-9520DN stands head and shoulders over the competition.
Depending on the country you live in, the recommended retail price for the entry-level Kyocera FS-9520DN is either on par with the main competitors (Europe and Canada) or around 15% more expensive (USA) than comparable network-ready devices. While the USA entry-level price looks a bit high, there are several mitigating factors which make the Kyocera FS-9520DN look like better value.
For a start there is the Kyocera FS-9520DN's 500,000 page photoconductor drum and imaging system, which leaves the competition far behind.
This device has an ultra long life imaging system so, on a day to day basis, the only item the user buys/replaces is relatively low cost bulk toner. In contrast, the nearest competing device uses all-in-one cartridges which contain the imaging system, developer and toner. While the competitor promotes its ease of cartridge swapping, the fact remains that when you replace the toner cartridge you also trash the unfinished drum and developer unit.
When printing very low toner coverage in documents, the price differential may not be great, but in today's highly graphical documents the trend is for pictoral documents with higher toner coverage, which results in a high cost per page on an all-in-one cartridge system.
Assuming an average 15% toner coverage and 600,000 pages, the Kyocera FS9520DN will require a single drum change versus its leading competitor which will require around 60 toner cartridge purchases; in contrast, the toner cartridges for the competitor could fill a small room!
Next there are useful capabilities including a 7 bin mailbox unit. The mailbox unit allows simpler sharing of the device because up to 7 users/departments can have their work output into their own dedicated mailbox from which they can collect it when they are are ready. On competing units you could find that the 7 departments' work gets mixed up - leading to either loss or damage of the completed work.
Once you hit 50ppm or need ledger/a3 sized paper the printer market divides. Some manufacturers produce lowcost 45ppm devices, but they cannot print onto larger than legal (8.5" x 14") paper. This means that if you want 50+ppm or ledger/A3 paper you can count the monochrome products on one hand.

Design Features:
The Kyocera FS-9520DN offers monochrome printing at advertised speeds of up to 51ppm, with resolution up to 2,400 x 600dpi. Ethernet connectivity and duplex are included standard, as are three printer drivers (PCL and PostScript emulations, plus the manufacturer’s proprietary driver).
Finishing options are a strong point on the Kyocera FS-9250DN. Users can choose from a wealth of options including saddlestitch finishing, hole punching, folding and offset stacking — a sharp contrast to most competing devices, which offer limited finishing capabilities if they offer any at all.
This gives the Kyocera FS-9520DN a distinct advantage in any environment where finishing is needed.
Paper capacity starts at 1,200 sheets and goes to a maximum of 4,200 sheets — among the highest in this market sector.
Warmup time is quoted as 25 seconds from cold start, with first page out time advertised at 5 seconds.

The Control Panel:
The control panel is straightforward and easy to use, consisting of a Menu button, an Enter button and four directional arrow keys intended to help users navigate the menus. A large green Go button and smaller red Cancel button are also present and clearly marked.
Indicator lights flash for Ready, Data and Attention. In addition, a paper indicator light shows which paper cassette is being used to feed paper.
Connectivity:
Standard connections include 10/100 BaseTX Ethernet, a parallel port and a USB
2.0 connection.
The inclusion of USB 2.0 is a plus for a single user, because it transfers data at a significantly faster rate than USB 1.1, which is still offered on many devices currently on the market.
An optional Multiple Interface Connection (MIC) allows for simultaneous data transfer via up to four interfaces, with each interface having its ow n v irtual pri nt er.
Maintenance:
The Kyocera FS-9520DN has a 500,000page life developer and drum and a maximum monthly duty cycle advertised at up to 300,000 pages. The manufacturer rates the average monthly duty cycle at up to 55,000 pages.
The device comes with a starter toner cartridge which yields an advertised 20,000 pages @5% coverage.
Replacement toner cartridges are rated by the manufacturer at 40,000 pages @5% coverage.
Like other printers from this manufacturer, the Kyocera FS-9520DN features an ultra long life imaging system based on an amorphous silicon print drum. It is continually polished and reconditioned by tiny ceramic particles mixed into the “Ecotone” toner. This results in a drum that lasts much longer than most competing devices offer.
Warranty:
A one-year warranty is Included with purchase. Kyocera guarantees the drum and developer for a total of 3 years or 500,000 pages (whichever comes first), provided that the printer is used and cleaned according to the service instructions. An extended warranty (up to 5 years) is available at low cost.
