䳜 Energy Information..................................................
An electric vehicle is driven using a
battery and an electric motor. While
general vehicles use an internal
combustion engine and gasoline as
fuel, electric vehicles use electrical
energy that is charged inside the
high voltage battery
As a result, electric vehicles are ecofr
ie
ndly in that they do not require
fuel and do not emit exhaust gases.
Characteristics of Electric Vehicles
It is driven using the electrical
energy that is charged inside the
high voltage battery. This method
prevents air pollution since fuel, like
gasoline, is not required, negating
the emission of exhaust gases.
A high performance electric motor is
us
n the vehicle as well. Com
ed i
pared to standard, internal combus
tion engine vehicles, engine noise
and vibrations are much more mini
mal when driving.
When decelerating or driving down
hill, regenerative braking is utilized
to charge the high voltage battery.
This minimizes energy loss and
increases the distance to empty.
-
-
-
When the battery charge is not suf
ficient, AC charge, DC charge and
trickle charge are available. (Refer
to "Charge Types for Electric Vehi
cle" on page 1-13.)
What does regenerative braking do?
It uses an electric motor when
decelerating and braking and recap
tures & transforms kinetic to elec
trical energy in order to charge the
high voltage battery.
Battery Information
The vehicle is composed of a high
voltage battery that drives the
motor, air conditioner, and an auxil
iary battery (12 V) that drives all
other 12 V systems.
The auxiliary battery is automati
cally charged when the vehicle is in
the ready () mode or the high
-
voltage battery is be
ing charged.

* VCU: Vehicle Control Unit
䳜 Do not remove or disassemble
high voltage components and high
voltage battery connectors and/
or wiring (Orange cabling). Also,
be careful not to damage high
voltage components and the high
voltage battery. It may cause
serious injury and significantly
impact the performance and
durability of the vehicle.
䳜 When inspection and maintenance
is required for high voltage com
-
ponents and the high voltage bat
tery, have the vehicle inspected
by an authorized Kia dealer.
High Voltage (HV) Battery (lithiumion polymer)
The HV battery powers the vehicle
and peripheral devices.
The charge amount of the HV bat
tery may gradually decrease when
the vehicle is not driven or charged.
The battery capacity of the HV bat
tery may decrease over time when
the vehicle is stored in high tem
peratures and temporarily in low
temperatures.
Distance to empty may vary
depending
-
(cargo, rain, snow, wind, road sur
driving conditions
on the
faces), even if the charge amount is
the same. The HV battery may
expend more energy when driving a
fast pace or uphill. These actions
may reduce the distance to empty.

CAUTION
NOTICE
The high voltage battery is used
when using the air conditioner /
heater. This may reduce the dis
-
tance to empty. Make sure to set
moderate temperatures when using
the air conditioner / heater and/or
use the pre-conditioning prior to
departures.
Natural degradation may occur with
the high voltage battery depending
on
he number of years the vehicle
t
was used and/or the number of
charging cycles. This will reduce the
distance to empty over time.
When the charge capacity and dis
-
tance to empty keep falling, contact
an authorized Kia dealer for inspec
-
tion and maintenance.
If the vehicle will not be in use for an
ex
tended period of time, charge the
high voltage battery once every
three months to prevent it from
discharging. Also, if the charge
amount is not enough, immediately
charge to full and store the vehicle.
AC charge is recommended to keep
the high voltage battery in optim
a
l
condition.
Main Components of Electric Vehicle
䳜 Make sure to use a designated
charger when charging the HV
battery. Using different types of
chargers may have a serious
impact on vehicle durability.
䳜 Make sure that the HV battery
charge gauge does not reach E
(Empty). If the vehicle is kept at E
(Empty) for a long period, it may
damage the high voltage battery
and the high voltage battery may
have to be replaced depending on
the level of degradation.
䳜 If
the vehicle is in a collision, con
-
tact an authorized Kia dealer to
inspect whether the high voltage
battery is still connected.
The high voltage battery warmer
system operates when the charging
connector is connected to the vehi
-
cle.
However, the high voltage warmer
system
may not operate when bat
tery temperature drops below -95
F (-35 C).
-
If the HV battery is only charged to
80%,
d you minimize the number
an
of HV battery charging, you can
keep the HV battery performance in
optimal condition. (vs charging the
HV battery to 100% an/or charging
every drive cycle.)

Vehicle data collection and event data recorders
INTRODUCTION
Vehicle data collection and event
data recorders
This vehicle is equipped with an
event data recorder (EDR). The main
purpose of an EDR is to record, in
certain crash or near crash-like sit
uations, such as an air bag deploy
ment or hitting a road obstacle,
data that will assist in understand
ing how a vehicle's systems per
formed. The EDR is designed to
record data related to vehicle
dynamics and safety systems for a
short period of time, typically 30
seconds or less. The EDR in this
vehicle is designed to record such
data as:
䳜 How
various systems in your
ve
hicle were operating;
䳜 Whether or not the driver and
p
assenger safety belts were
buckled/ fastened;
䳜 H
ow far (if at all) the driver was
essing the accelerator and/or
depr
brake pedal; and,
䳜 H
ow fast the vehicle was travel
ing.
These data can help provide a bet
ter understanding of the circum
stances in which crashes and
injuries occur.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
EDR data are recorded by your vehi
cle only if a non-trivial crash situa
-
tion occurs; no data are recorded by
the EDR under normal driving condi
tions and no personal data (e.g.,
name, gender, age, and crash loca
-
tion) are recorded. However, other
parties, such as law enforcement,
could combine the EDR data with
the type of personally identifying
data routinely acquired during a
crash investigation.
To read data recorded by an EDR,
sp
ial equipment is required, and
ec
access to the vehicle or the EDR is
needed. In addition to the vehicle
manufacturer, other parties, such as
law enforcement, that have the
special equipment, can read the
information if they have access to
the vehicle or the EDR.

SAFETY FEATURES OF YOUR
VEHICLE
Important safety precautions
You will find many safety precau
tions and recommendations
throughout this section, and
throughout this manual.
The safety precautions in this sec
tion are among the most important.
Always wear your seat belt
A seat belt is your best protection in
all types of accidents. Air bags are
designed to supplement seat belts,
not replace them. So even though
your vehicle is equipped with air
bags, ALWAYS make sure you and
your passengers wear your seat
belts, and wear them properly.
Restrain all children
All children under age 13 should ride
in your vehicle properly restrained in
a rear seat, not the front seat.
Infants and small children should be
restrained in an appropriate child
restraint. Larger children should use
a booster seat with the lap/shoulder
belt until they can use the seat belt
properly without a booster seat.
-
-
Air bag hazards
While air bags can save lives, they
can also cause serious or fatal inju
-
ries to occupants who sit too close
to them, or who are not properly
restrained. Infants, young children,
and shorter adults are at the great
est risk of being injured by an inflat
ing air bag. Follow all instructions
and warnings in this manual.
Driver distraction
Driver distraction presents a serious
and potentially deadly danger, espe
cially for inexperienced drivers.
Safety should be the first concern
when behind the wheel and drivers
need to be aware of the wide array
of potential distractions, such as
drowsiness, reaching for objects,
eating, personal grooming, other
passengers, and using cellular
phones.
Drivers can become distracted when
the
take their eyes and attention
y
off the road or their hands off the
wheel to focus on activities other
than driving. To reduce your risk of
distraction or getting into an acci
-
dent:
䳜 ALWAYS set up your mobile
de
vices (i.e., MP3 players, phones,
navigation units, etc.) when your
vehicle is parked or safely
stopped.
-
-
4
-
4
3
Page 82
Safety features of your vehicle
䳜 ONLY use your mobile device
when allowed by laws and when
conditions permit safe use.
NEVER text or email while driving.
Most states have laws prohibiting
drivers from texting. Some states
and cities also prohibit drivers
from using handheld phones.
䳜 NEVE
R let the use of a mobile
vice distract you from driving.
de
You have a responsibility to your
passengers and others on the
road to always drive safely, with
your hands on the wheel as well
as your eyes and attention on the
road.
Control your speed
Excessive speed is a major factor in
crash injuries and deaths. Generally,
the higher the speed, the greater
the risk, but serious injuries can also
occur at lower speeds. Never drive
faster than is safe for current con
-
ditions, regardless of the maximum
speed posted.
Important safety precautions
Keep your vehicle in safe condition
Having a tire blowout or a mechani
cal failure can be extremely hazard
ous. To reduce the possibility of
such problems, check your tire pres
sures and condition frequently, and
perform all regularly scheduled
maintenance.
