Chapter 1 — About Intermec Connection Manager
About Intermec Connection Manager
The Intermec Connection Manager is a software application and
API interface that provides seamless network roaming for
Intermec mobile computers.
Intermec Connection Manager works in the background to
establish and maintain connections automatically. When a
network changes status, a message is sent to all applications that
are connected to Intermec Connection Manager’s API.
Intermec Connection Manager supports:
•751B/761B Mobile Computer with Windows Mobile 2003.
•CN3 Mobile Computer.
Intermec Connection Manager allows for network roaming
between various IP connections including:
•Wired Ethernet (802.3).
•Wireless Ethernet (802.11).
•GPRS/EDGE.
•CDMA/1xRTT/EV-DO.
Note: Intermec Connection Manager does not
support Wired Ethernet on the CN3 Mobile
Computer. Avoid using Intermec Connection
Manager for roaming if you are using Wired Ethernet,
as there is a possibility of two network interface cards
(NICs) being active.
Note: Demo applications are included on the
installation CD for both Java and C++. These
applications describe how to use the API interface.
Installing Intermec Connection Manager
The installation CD provides you with the executable files that
are necessary to install Connection Manager on your mobile

Note: While Connection Manager is running, you
must not change network settings via iConnect or
NDISTray as this may cause Connection Manager to
stop functioning properly.
Intermec Connection Manager Settings
After you have installed Intermec Connection Manager, you are
able to access the settings menu from the icon in the system tray.
From the system tray, you are able to configure Intermec
Connection Manager, apply registry settings, and check your
Ethernet settings.
Intermec Connection Manager Settings Menu
Configuring Intermec Connection Manager
You can access the Configuration screen from the Intermec
Connection Manager Settings Menu. In the Configuration
screen, you are able to adjust various settings including keepalive
ping intervals, power thresholds, and WAN settings.
Keepalive Tab
The Keepalive tab lets you adjust the amount of time between
ping packets. This prevents the session from timing out and
keeps route entries updated. Setting the Keepalive interval to 0
minutes disables this option. The default value is 0 minutes.
Intermec Connection Manager User’s Guide9
Page 20
Chapter 2 — Using Intermec Connection Manager
Note: Keepalive ping packets are included in your
WAN data bill, so be aware when choosing a
Keepalive interval that although the Keepalive ping
packet and its response packet are small (less than 100
bytes each), your wireless provider might charge a
minimum packet size.
Ping Destination is used with the Keepalive Interval. The
destination can be a static IP or DNS address. If the Ping
Destination is left blank, Intermec Connection Manager will use
the IP address of the gateway to which it is attached.
Thresholds Tab
The Threshold tab allows you to change power threshold
settings. Intermec Connection Manager can be set to disable
roaming or disable a specific roaming option when the battery
life reaches a specified level. By default, roaming is disabled when
the battery level reaches 20%.
Logins Tab
The Logins tab allows you to configure your WWAN settings.
Get Registry Settings
This feature instructs Intermec Connection Manager to read its
registry settings. This allows registry changes to take effect
without rebooting the mobile computer.
The installation CD contains a .reg file with registry
values that can be modified.
Check Ethernet Now
This setting instructs Intermec Connection Manager to attempt
to establish an Ethernet connection on its next cycle.
If Intermec Connection Manager detects an Ethernet adapter but
finds that the cable is not attached, it will stop checking for a
connection until the device is removed and reinserted into a
dock, or until the Check Ethernet Now button is tapped.

Chapter 2 — Using Intermec Connection Manager
Enable/Disable WWAN
This setting allows you to toggle the WWAN roaming option on
or off. Tap on the display to enable or disable the WWAN
roaming option.
Enable/Disable 802.11
This setting allows you to toggle the 802.11 network connection
on or off. Tap the display to enable or disable the 802.11 roaming
option.
When using the 751B/761B Mobile Computer, you should
disable the 802.11 roaming option when the mobile computer is
away from the network site. Otherwise, the failed attempts to
find an 802.11 network will cause the 802.11 drivers to
repeatedly load and unload, which will lead to an eventual lock of
the system. To avoid this issue, you can also warm boot daily,
such as after end-of-day processing.
Enable/Disable Ethernet
This setting allows you to toggle the Ethernet roaming option on
or off. Tap the display to enable or disable the Ethernet roaming
option.
Intermec Connection Manager does not support Ethernet on the
CN3 Mobile Computer; however, you cannot disable the
Ethernet connection.
Note: Avoid using the Intermec Connection Manager
for roaming if you are using Ethernet, as there is a
possibility of two NICs being active.
Log Level
Logged information is stored in file ItcCnMgr.log which is
written to the root of the object store “\”. When the log size
reaches 1 MB, ItcCnMgr.log is renamed to ItcCnMgr2.log and a
new ItcCnMgr.log is started. ItcCnMgr2.log is overwritten each
time ItcCnMgr.log reaches 1 MB.
Intermec Connection Manager has 5 levels of logging, with 5
being the highest. The higher the level is set, the more detail you
will receive in your log. The default is 1.

Chapter 2 — Using Intermec Connection Manager
Intermec Technical Support is available for help in understanding
the information in the log. For contact information, see “Global
Services and Support” on page vii.
Enable/Disable Roaming
This setting allows you to toggle roaming on or off. Tap on the
display to enable or disable roaming on your device.
Using Intermec Connection Manager
After you have configured Intermec Connection Manager, you
are able to use the roaming feature.
Note: You have to activate your CDMA or GPRS
radio before you use Intermec Connection Manager.
Refer to your mobile computer’s user’s manual for
more information.
To enable roaming
1 Tap on the Intermec Connection Manager icon in the system
tray. The Intermec Connection Manager menu appears.
2 Choose Enable Roaming.
Once roaming is enabled, an icon will be displayed in the
system tray indicating what type of connection you are
currently using.

Chapter 2 — Using Intermec Connection Manager
Intermec Connection Manager Switching Priority
Intermec Connection Manager automatically switches
connections based on network availability. The default switching
priorities for Intermec Connection Manager are:
•Ethernet if you are on external power or using an Ethernet
adapter.
•802.11 based on your configured SSID or profiles. See your
mobile computer’s user’s manual for information on creating
profiles for Funk Security or using Microsoft Zero
Configuration.
•WWAN.
To enable or disable connections, see “Intermec Connection
Manager Settings” on page 9.
Note: Before using Intermec Connection Manager,
make sure that you have valid network connections
including SSID and WWAN connections.
WWAN Voice and Modem Dialing
WWAN voice and modem dialing are supported by Intermec
Connection Manager versions 1.5 and later. To handle voice
calls, make sure you enable both roaming and WWAN
connections.
Note: Intermec Connection Manager does not
support analog modems.
Some WWAN radios suspend data traffic while a voice call is in
progress. When the voice call ends, the data session will continue.
Updating Connection Manager
You must first exit Intermec Connection Manager before you
update the program. Updates to Connection Manager are
installed the same way as the initial installation. For help, see
“Installing Intermec Connection Manager” on page 2.
Configuration settings are maintained during updates of the
Intermec Connection program.
