should be read before the appliance is operated.
2. Retain Instructions – The safety and operating instructions
should be retained for future reference.
3. Heed Warnings – All warnings on the appliance and in the
operating instructions should be adhered to.
4. Follow Instructions – All operating and use instructions
should be followed.
5. Water and Moisture – Do not use the appliance near water
–for example, near a bath tub, wash bowl, kitchen sink, or laundry tub; in a wet basement; or near a swimming pool; and the
like.
6. Cleaning – Unplug the appliance from the wall outlet before
cleaning. The appliance should be cleaned with a dry cloth or
only as recommended by the manufacturer.
7. Ventilation – Slots and openings in the cabinet are provided
for ventilation and to ensure reliable operation of the appliance
and to protect it from overheating, and these openings must not
be blocked or covered. Do not use the appliance on a bed, sofa,
rug, or other such surface. Newspapers, table clothes, curtains,
and other items can inadvertently block ventilation slots. Do
not place the unit near curtains that could obstruct the ventilation. If you install the appliance in a built-in installation, such
as a bookcase or rack, ensure that there is adequate ventilation.
Leave 20 cm (8") of free space at the top and sides and 10 cm
(4") at the rear. The rear edge of the shelf or board above the
appliance should be set 10 cm (4") away from the rear panel or
wall, creating a flue-like gap for warm air to escape.
8. Heat – The appliance should be situated away from heat
sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other appliances (including amplifier) that produce heat.
9. Grounding or Polarization – The appliance may be equipped
with a polarized alternating current line plug (a plug having
one blade wider than the other). This plug will fit into the
power outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you are
unable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the
plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician
to replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug.
A grounding type plug has two blades and a third grounding
prong. The wide blade or the third prong are provided for your
safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult
an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.
10. Power-Cord Protection – Power-supply cords should be
routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or pinched by
items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention
to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where
they exit from the appliance.
11. Attachments – Do not use attachments not recommended by
the appliance manufacturer as they may cause hazards.
Accessories – Do not place the appliance on an unstable cart,
stand, tripod, bracket, or table. The appliance may fall, causing
serious injury to a child or adult, and serious damage to the
appliance. Use only with a cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table
recommended by the manufacturer, or sold with the appliance.
Any mounting of the appliance
should follow the manufacturer’s
instructions, and should use a
mounting accessory recommended
by the manufacturer.
12. An appliance and cart combination
should be moved with care to avoid
injury from tip-over.
Quick stops, excessive force, and
uneven surfaces may cause the
appliance and cart combination to
overturn.
13. Lightning – For added protection for the appliance during a
lightning storm, or when it is left unattended and unused for
long periods of time, unplug it from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system. This will prevent damage to
the appliance due to lightning and power-line surges.
14. Servicing – Do not attempt to service the appliance yourself as
opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer all servicing to qualified service
personnel.
Damage Requiring Service – Unplug the appliance from the
wall outlet and refer servicing to qualified service personnel
under the following conditions:
A. When the power-supply cord or plug is damaged,
B. If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into the
appliance,
C. If the appliance has been exposed to rain or water,
D. If the appliance does not operate normally by following the
operating instructions. Adjust only those controls that are
covered by the operating instructions as an improper
adjustment of other controls may result in damage and will
often require extensive work by a qualified technician to
restore the appliance to its normal operation,
E. If the appliance has been dropped or damaged in any way,
and
F. When the appliance exhibits a distinct change in perfor-
mance – this indicates a need for service.
15. Object and Liquid Entry – Never push objects of any kind
into the appliance through openings as they may touch dangerous voltage points or short-out parts that could result in a fire or
electric shock.
The appliance should not be exposed to dripping or splashing
and no objects filled with liquids, such as vases should be
placed on the appliance.

Connecting the DPC-7.4
This chapter explains how to connect the DPC-7.4 to your
other AV components.
Before Making Any Connections
• Read the manuals supplied with your AV components.
• Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed all
audio and video connections.
Optical Digital Inputs
The DPC-7.4’s optical digital connector
has a dust cap for keeping out dust and dirt
when it’s not in use. Remove the cap before
inserting an optical digital plug. Push the
plug in all the way to make a good connection. Keep the dust cap in a safe place for
future use.
AV Cables & Connectors
RCA/phono AV Connection Color Coding
RCA/phono AV connections are usually color coded: red,
white, and yellow. Use red plugs to connect right-channel
audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled “R”). Use white
plugs to connect left-channel audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled “L”). And use yellow plugs to connect composite video inputs and outputs.

Connecting Your TV or Projector
This section explains how to connect the DPC-7.4 to your TV
or projector.
In this hookup example, the TV handles the audio and video.
If your TV has a Dolby Pro Logic decoder built-in, you’ll be
able to enjoy DVDs and videos that bear the Dolby Surround
logo.
To enjoy Dolby Digital or DTS (5.1-channel surround),
you’ll need a compatible decoder (see page 18).
The DPC-7.4 has three types of video output: component
video, S-Video, and composite video. Component video
offers the best picture quality, so if your TV supports it, use
a commercially available component video cable to connect
the DPC-7.4’s COMPONENT video output to the component video inputs on your TV. If your TV supports progressive scanning, you must use component video in order to take
advantage of that feature.

when your AV receiver has Zone2, you must connect the
DPC-7.4’s analog audio outputs to the AV receiver.
• Make sure that the Digital Out > Dolby Digital setting to
“Dolby Digital” (see page 42). Otherwise you won’t get
surround sound.
• Also refer to the connection information supplied with
your AV receiver or decoder.
• When playing Dolby Digital or DTS source material, be
sure to select Dolby Digital or DTS decoding, respectively,
on your AV receiver or decoder. See the relevant manuals.
•You can experience Dolby Digital only with DVDs that
bear the Dolby Digital logo. Likewise, you can experience
DTS only with DVDs or CDs that bear the DTS logo.
• When a DVD disc is loaded into the DVD player, the disc
would default to Dolby digital format. For DTS playback
you would need to select DTS in the table of contents of
the movie. Usually in “Language” or in “Audio Setup”.

Controlling the DPC-7.4 When It’s Out of Range
If the DPC-7.4 is located in another room, installed in a cabinet, or out of range of its remote controller, you can use a
commercially available IR receiver to pickup the remote controller signals and feed them to the DPC-7.4, as shown below.
Controlling Other Out-of-range AV Components
If another AV component is out of range of its remote controller, you can use a commercially available IR emitter to
retransmit the remote controller signals received at the DPC-
7.4’s IR IN, as shown below.

will be selected next.
Notes:
• During playback, you can select chapters or tracks by
using the Up [] and Down [] buttons.
• When you stop playback of a DVD-Video or Video CD, the
DPC-7.4 remembers the point at which playback was
stopped and “Resume” appears onscreen for a few seconds. To resume playback from that point, press the Play

[] button again. The Resume function is reset when
another disc is selected.
•With the Last Memory function you can resume playback
from a specific point even if the disc has been removed (see
page 37).
• Do not move the DPC-7.4 or subject it to vibration during
playback. Doing so may damage your discs or DPC-7.4.
•You can improve the picture quality of paused playback
with the Pause/Still setting (see page 44).
23
Page 24
Basic Playback —Continued
• Prolonged display of the same picture or menu may cause
irreparable damage to your TV screen called screen burn-
in . To prevent this, don’t keep playback paused for too long
and always press the Stop [ ] button when you’ve finished
playing a DVD-Video or Video CD. Your DPC-7.4 features
a screen saver to protect your TV from the effects of burnin (see page 44).
•With some DVD-Videos, you may experience picture
noise that is not normally visible with regular TV broadcasts. This is usually because DVD-Video uses a lot of
high-resolution video data. The amount of noise, if any,
will depend on your particular TV and the problem can
sometimes be alleviated by turning down your TV’s sharpness control.

Navigating Disc Menus
DVDVCD
DVD-Videos usually have an onscreen menu from which you
can select titles, chapters, and other options, including foreign language soundtracks, subtitles, and audio formats (e.g.,
Dolby Digital or DTS). Video CDs that support PBC (Playback Control) may also have an onscreen menu (see page 8).
1
Load and select a DVD-Video or
Video CD.
See page 22 and page 23.
With DVD-Videos, a menu usually
appears automatically. If it doesn’t, try
pressing the [Top Menu] button.
With some PBC Video CDs, you may
have to press the Play [ ] button to display the menu.
2
Remote controller
Use the remote controller’s navigation [ ], [ ], [ ], [ ] buttons to
select items on the menu, and use
the [Enter] button to confirm your

selection.
If you select a playback option (e.g., subtitles), another menu of options will typically appear, in which case you use the
remote controller’s navigation buttons to
select items and the [Enter] button to confirm your choice.
With PBC Video CDs, you have to enter a
number to select a menu item, which you
can do by using the remote controller’s
number buttons. If the Video CD’s menu
has several pages, use the Up [] and
Down [] buttons to select them. During playback, you can display the menu
by pressing the [Return] button.
Notes:
• Not all DVD-Videos and PBC Video CDs have menus.
• Menu operation varies from disc-to-disc. See the disc’s
sleeve notes for details.
• On some DVD-Videos, options such as foreign language
soundtracks, subtitles, and audio formats appear on a separate menu called the disc menu, and titles and chapters
appear on what’s called the title menu . To display the disc
menu, press the [Menu] button. If no menu appears, press
the [Top Menu] button.
•With DVD-Videos, foreign language soundtracks and
audio formats can usually be selected during playback by
using the remote controller’s [Audio] button (see page 36).
Similarly, subtitles can be selected by using the remote
controller’s [Subtitle] button (see page 36).
•You must turn on PBC in order to use the menus on a PBC
Video CD (see page 44).
• If PBC is off (see page 44), or your Video CD doesn’t support it, you can use the Up [] and Down [] buttons,
or the remote controller’s number buttons to select tracks
on a Video CD.
• PBC menus can be hidden or displayed while playback is
stopped by pressing the [Top Menu] button.
