Backup solutions
The Direct Backup Engine feature of the HP Surestore Disk Array XP with use of a backup application provides “server-free” backup solutions between the disk array and backup devices such as tape devices and disk devices. Direct Backup Engine enables nondisruptive backup directly from disk to tape (or disk) in a storage area network (SAN) environment, eliminating server CPU and I/O overhead during actual movement of data and shortening the time required for backups. Users can perform copy (backup) operations on the data (in unit of blocks) stored on the multiplatform XP disk array via fibre-channel interfaces by copying the data directly onto the users' backup devices (such as tape devices and disk).

Direct Backup Engine supports the Extended Copy commands issued from the host server (with a backup application installe d) to the XP Disk Array. To use Direct Backup Engine, you must enable (install) the Direct Backup Engine feature option on the XP Remote Console PC. You will also use the LUN Manager feature option on the XP Remote Console PC to set the fibre-channel ports required for the Direct Backup Engine operations. For instructions on installing the Remote Console PC and LUN Manager remote console software, please refer to the product documentation
Direct Backup Engine only assists backup operations for the data stored on the XP Disk Array by enabling the XP Disk Array to receive the Extended Copy commands issued by the open-system host server, and copy the specified data directly to a specified backup device. Direct Backup Engine is provided as a XP remote console option (license key), but to perform Direct Backup Engine) operations, a backup application, which actually issues the Extended Copy commands to the disk array, is also required in the host server.
Generally, the term “Extended Copy command” refers to a block-oriented command that can cause device-to-device data movement. In this document, the term “Direct Backup Engine operations” sometimes refers not only to the XP Direct Backup Engine feature alone, but also the entire backup procedures including LUN Manager operations for setting the ports and the Extended Copy commands issued from the host server. For information and instructions on performing LUN Manager operations, please refer to the product documentation. Fo r info rm ati on and inst ruc tion s on performing the Extended Copy command operations on the host server, please refer to the manual of the backup application, or contact your HP account team.

Open-System Host Server
The Direct Backup Engine operations involve the open-system host server with a backup application installed. The host server executes the Extended Copy commands to copy the specified data in the XP Disk Array to the specified backup devices (such as tape devices and Disks). The host server can remain online during the actual movement of data from disk to tape or disk; therefore the server CPU and I/O resources are always available to other operations and applications. The host server must be connected to a target port in the XP Disk Array via the fibre-channel interface.
Note: For the host server requirements, see the systems requirements.
14 HP Surestore Direct Backup Engine XP: User’s Guide
XP Disk Array and Volumes (LUs)
The Direct Backup Engine operations involve the XP Disk Array. Direct Backup Engine supports all physical disk drive options and RAID-level configurations for the XP Disk Array. The XP Disk Array contains the original volumes (LUs) for backup, and remains online to the host server all the time. Also, the XP Disk Array must contain at least one port group, which consists of a target port for receiving the Extended Copy commands from the host server and an initiator port for copying the specified data to the backup device. Also, the LUN Manager option on the Remote Console PC is required to set the port groups.
Direct Backup Engine supports all LUs that can be identified by the backup application on the host server. When the Extended Copy command is issued to the XP Disk Array from the backup application on the host server, information about the data (files) that you want to copy is reported to the XP Disk Array by the Extended Copy command. For example, the Extended Copy command instructs the XP Disk Array about the LUN in which the data is stored, the starting Logical Block Address (LBA), and the data size to be transferred. to copy depends on the backup application on the host server.
Note: How you specify files that you want
Figure 3 shows an example of how the Extended Copy command specifies the data to be copied.
