Distress Communications
The purpose of this Operator's Guide is to provide basic distress communications procedures for this equipment. For more detailed information see the Operator's Manual.

Sending Distress Alert
Nature of distress not specifi ed
Open the DISTRESS button cover on the Terminal Unit IC-215 or Distress Alert/Received Call Unit IC-305 and press the [DISTRES S ] button four seconds. While the distress alert is being transmitted, the message “Sending Distress Alert” appears, the audio alarm sounds and the lamp in the button lights. When you receive acknowledgement of the distress signal from an LES, the message “Distress Acknowledgement” appears, the alarm sounds intermittently and the lamp flashes.
Nature of distress specifi ed
If you are not pressed for time, designate
the nature of distress as below, before transmitting the distress alert.
1. Press the [F8] and [1] keys to display the Distress Alert Setup screen.

7. Press the [Enter] key to update the contents.
8. Open the DISTRESS button cover on the Terminal Unit IC-215 or Distress Alert/Received Call Unit IC-305 and press the [DISTRESS] button until (about four seconds) it lights to transmit the distress alert.

2. Press the [] key to choose Nature.
3. Press the [Enter] key to display the nature of distress list.
4. Choose appropriate nature of distress.
5. Press the [Enter] key.
Sending Distress Message
After receiving the distress alert acknowledgment from an LES and you have the time, you may send a distress message, which provides detailed distress information.
1. Press the [F1] and [1] keys to display the editor screen.
2. Type MAYDAY three times at the top of the message, followed by ship’s name, type of assistance required and other information that may aid in rescue. The illustration below shows a sample distress message.

5. Press the [Enter] key to open the prior it y options window.
6. Press the [] key to choose “Distress.”
7. Press the [Enter] key to close the
window.
8. Press the [] key to choose LES ID.
9. Press the [Enter] key to open the LES
list.
10. Choose an LES, preferably the one
where the distress alert was transmitted.
11. Press the [Enter] key to close the LES
list.
12. Press the [] key to choose TRANSMIT.
13. Press the [Enter] key twice to transmit
the distress message.
Note: Country/Ocean Code and Station ID are not required in a distress messag e.

While the distress message is being transmitted, the message “Dist r ess Message Call Activated” appears, the alarm sounds and the lamp in the [DISTRESS] butt on lights. When you receive acknowledgement of the distress message from an LES, the message “Distress Message Call Acknowledged” appears, the alarm sounds intermittently and the lamp in the button flashes.
