APPLICATION
The PSS-ML Test Lamp is a compact, battery operated
source of IR radiation for periodic testing of PM-5MP+
Series Flame Detectors. The PSS-ML simulates a fire
by producing a beam of IR radiation with the same
wavelength as the response range of the PM-5MP+,
thereby enabling the operator to verify proper operation without the need for an open flame. The device is
suitable for use in hazardous (classified) areas.
INSTALLING BATTERIES
CAUTION
Change batteries only in a safe (non-hazardous)
location.
1. Unscrew the bezel and remove the reflector lamp.
2. Insert two size “AAA” alkaline batteries as shown
in Figure 1. Observe correct polarity.
3. Inspect the O-ring to be sure that it is in good
condition, then insert the reflector lamp into the
bezel and install the bezel on the case (turn
clockwise).
ON/OFF
To turn the light on, turn the bezel clockwise until the
light comes on. To turn the light off, turn the bezel
counter-clockwise at least one and a half turns.
TEST PROCEDURE
WARNING
A full system test results in an alarm output. This
will result in the suppression system being activated if it is not disabled prior to testing.
1. Suppression System. Disable the suppression
system if its activation is not desired during this
test.
2. Operation of PSS-ML Test Lamp. Turn on the
PSS-ML and wait at least 15 seconds. Direct the
beam into the front of the detector as shown in
Figure 2. Hold the PSS-ML so that the bezel is
less than 1 inch from the front of the flame detector and move it from side to side to expose both
sensors and to create a “flicker” effect.

3. Fire Response. Expose the sensor under test to
a PSS-ML as described in Step 2. The control
panel should indicate an alarm condition for the
position or zone corresponding to the sensor.
4. Restore Fire Protection System. Restore the
system to an operational condition after all tests
have been completed.
MAINTENANCE
The O-ring and the surfaces around the O-ring must
be kept clean to maintain the watertight seal.
Periodically the O-ring should be lubricated to maintain the watertight seal and to ensure smooth rotation
of the bezel. Use care when removing the O-ring. Do
not use tools that can damage the O-ring or the sealing surfaces.
When storing the test lamp for long periods of time,
remove the batteries to prevent leakage and possible
damage to the device.
To prolong lamp life after loading fresh batteries, it is
better to turn the light on for several minutes to “age”
the batteries rather than flicking it on and off many
times.
To ensure that active hydrogen removal catalyst is
present in the light, replace the reflector lamp if it gets
wet.
