Product Information
Detcon Model SG1 is a portable single-gas detector that uses electrochemical sensor technology to detect and monitor hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur dioxide. This lightweight, compact gas detector is controlled by an advanced microprocessor allowing for automatic zero-calibration and easy span calibration set up. During normal operation the large backlit LCD screen continuously displays battery life and real-time gas concentration in ppm or concentration of oxygen by percentage.
The SG1 features advanced STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit) and TWA (Time Weighted Average) functions to prevent dangerous prolonged exposure to a specified gas. Maximum and minimum gas concentrations can also be programmed and monitored. The portable gas detector features an easy to use touch-button interface with simple-to-follow display symbols. Users are alerted to hazardous conditions via three alarm functions: vibration alert, LED alert lamp and an audible buzzer with low and high settings of up to 90 dB. Weighing just 4.6 ounces, the SG1 is housed in a sturdy rubber enclosure that is shock resistant. It includes a heavy-duty stainless steel alligator belt clip and has a minimum battery run time of 4,500 hours.

Start of Operation
Instrument Power-On
Press Power key for 2 seconds to turn power on. (Power will not be
turned on if the Power key is released before 2 seconds) After power-up, a 10 second countdown will be displayed on the LCD
screen as the unit is being stabilized and the program enters Gas Detection Mode with alarm
sound and vibration.
When the unit stabilizes and enters Gas Detection Mode, it will display the icon and gas reading. For normal operation, the icon will disappear after blinking 5 times and the
concentration of the gas detected at the moment will be indicated. In the event that stabilization of the unit fails, it will not enter Gas Detection Mode and the icon will be displayed. In this
case, calibration of the sensor or service of the device is required.

Instrument Power-Off
Press Power key for 3 seconds to turn power off. (Power will not be turned off if the Power key is released before 3 seconds)
Caution: Appropriate calibration of the device is always required prior to operation at work sites. Verify the unit’s detection response is functional and valid for the pertinent gas and that the gas detection region is not blocked with foreign materials that could interfere with gas detection.
LCD Back Light
In Gas Detection Mode, the concentration of gases being monitored will be indicated on the LCD display. The LED backlight can be turned on by pressing the green Arrow key which enables the operator to view the measured value in dark locations. The backlight is turned off by pressing the green Arrow key again. The backlight will automatically turn off after 30 seconds.
Operation Method
Detection Mode
The unit enters Gas Detection Mode when the power is turned on. Gas Detection Mode displays the concentration of the gas and the remaining battery capacity on the LCD display. It displays the gas concentration of Oxygen as a percentage (%) and toxic gases such as H2S, CO and SO2in parts per million (ppm).
The unit displays the real-time concentration value and monitors any
gas concentration changes. If the value exceeds the 1st or 2nd Alarm setting, both the displayed value and the corresponding alarm icon ( or ) will start blinking and audible
alarm alerts and vibration will be triggered. This also applies when the value exceeds the STEL/TWA settings with their corresponding icons blinking.
If the operator moves to a safe place where the concentration value of the measured gas is at normal levels, the concentration value will decrease and the alarm stops. (Even if the operator escapes to a safe area after alarm activation, the icon of the alarm remains on the screen and will disappear only after confirming the value by pressing the Power key.)
When the concentration value of the gas exceeds the maximum measuring range, it will display the MAX icon and the LED, audible alert and vibration will be triggered.
Indication of Peak Value and TWA & STEL Value
For Oxygen, the measured maximum and minimum values are displayed in order by brief presses of the Power button. For Toxic Gases, the maximum value, STEL value and TWA value are also displayed in order by brief presses of the Power button.
Example) In the case of an Oxygen Detection Unit
Program returns to Gas Detection Mode when the Arrow key is pressed at any time while displaying Peak, TWA or STEL. If the button is not touched for 10 seconds, the program will automatically return to Gas Detection Mode.

Caution: Detcon Inc. performs the initial calibration prior to shipment. An incorrectly calibrated value can reduce the accuracy of the product as the calibrated value is stored in the unit. Calibration, in general, is to be performed monthly or quarterly, and can be adjusted according to frequency of use.
Fresh Air Calibration
To enter Calibration Mode, press the Arrow key and Power key simultaneously for 3 seconds. CAL will be displayed and the icon will blink. Press the Power key to start
calibration. A 10 second countdown will be shown while the Fresh Air Calibration
occurs. If the calibration is successful, the icon will blink 3 times and the display will
return to Gas Detection Mode. If the calibration fails, the icon will blink continuously. Re-calibrate and if the
calibration fails again, contact Detcon to replace the sensor.
Caution: Fresh Air Calibration should be performed in an environment of fresh air without any

influence of other gases. The calibration is performed on the assumption that the concentration of Oxygen is 20.9%, the Inflammable Gas is 0% LEL and the concentration of Toxic Gas is 0ppm in the fresh air. Accordingly, it is not recommended to perform Fresh Air Calibration in a closed space, and calibration should not be performed where hazardous gases can be inhaled by operators.
Single Gas Calibration
To enter Calibration Mode, press the Arrow key and Power key simultaneously for 3 seconds. CAL will be displayed and the icon will blink. Press the Arrow key again for Single Gas Calibration. The icon will blink. Press the Power key for 5 seconds to start Single Gas Calibration. Do not to proceed with calibration without connecting the single gas.

When Single Gas Calibration starts, a 60 second countdown will be shown while the Single Gas Calibration occurs. If the calibration is successful, the concentration value of
the gas connected at the moment will be indicated and the icon will blink 3 times. Afterwards, it will indicate the concentration value measured at the moment when the Single Gas is disconnected. (Refer to the following table for correct gas concentration values) If the calibration fails, the icon will blink continuously. Re-calibrate and if the calibration fails again, contact Detcon to replace the sensor.

When the 2nd alarm occurs, the operator and workers should promptly leave the work site. The operator can acknowledge the alarm by pressing the Power key in a place where the concentration value of the gas is normal. (The alarm alerts continuously when it does not return to a normal state even if the Power key is pressed.)
When STEL / TWA alarm occurs, it is indicated with the value of the measured concentration and activates the alarm with the same sound and vibration as that of the 2nd alarm.
When STEL / TWA alarm occurs, their respective icons can be deleted only by Power Off.
Primary battery alarm sounds repeatedly at 5 minute intervals only when one bar of the battery icon remains.
Secondary battery alarm starts right before the end of power, and the power source finishes after 10 seconds from the outbreak of alarm.
In the event of a test or calibration failure, the icon is displayed with an alarm sound.

Notice for User
Please use the unit in ranges of applicable temperature, humidity and pressure that are appropriate for the specification of the product. Using the unit beyond this range may cause a malfunction/glitch of the unit.
Gas concentration measurement values by the sensor or the unit can vary with respect to the environment at the site (temperature, pressure and humidity). Therefore, the calibration of the unit should be performed at the same or similar environment as that of the unit use (temperature, pressure and humidity).
If temperature changes sharply during use of the unit (for instance, using the unit where there are varying temperatures between indoor and outdoor), the value of the measured gas concentration can change suddenly. Please allow time for the gas concentration value to stabilize.
Severe vibration or shock to the unit may cause a sudden change in value of the measured gas concentration. Please allow time for the gas concentration value to stabilize. Excessive shock to the unit can lead to problems with the sensor or the unit.
