ADVANTAGES of using INFRA RED
Many of the modern paint systems are two pack, and this type of system is getting
more popular. Two pack systems set, not by drying, but by a chemical reaction between
the two parts. Heat accelerates chemical reactions and many of today’s systems need
a minimum temperature to work. INFRA RED is a simple cost effective way of heating
these products.
Oven systems are expensive if the area being cured is relatively small. Up to 70%
of repairs are panel repairs rather than full resprays and it is for these jobs that
INFRA RED comes into its own. INFRA RED will give curing times of around 15-20
minutes. The cost savings can be substantial.
Even when a full respray is required there is often the need for local repairs using
filler etc. These can be carried out more quickly and efficiently with INFRA RED.
•Value for Money
Low capital cost. Easy installation. Reliable Operation. Low maintenance.
Efficient use of energy.

FEATURES
This INFRA RED heater is designed to be safe, hard wearing, rugged and
inexpensive to run. It is easily manoeuvrable even in confined spaces.
The ceramic “no glare” emitters are simple and safe to operate. Unlike short
wave emitters they are very durable and will not fracture even when splashed
with water or other liquids. They will continue to work 100% efficiently even when
covered in overspray.
They are long lasting – their life is measured in years rather than hours, and they
are maintenance free and self-cleaning.
There are no moving parts so there is less danger of dust being blown over the
painted surface.
The cassettes are independently adjustable and will reach under sills and around
corners. They are also separately controlled which allows for localised and
variable heating.
Medium/Long wave emitters have a gentle warm up temperature curve, which
eliminates the need for flash curing and eliminates the danger of solvent pop
and blistering.
Long term exposure to short wave infrared radiation is known to increase the
incidence of some eye problems. The wavelength produced by ceramic emitters
is not absorbed by the eye, and is therefore completely safe.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. What area can be covered by the INFRA RED heater?
A. Slightly more than the size of the head. The 3 head INFRA RED will cover
approximately 900x900mms. By moving the head further away a larger area
can be covered but the curing times will be longer.
Q. What will the running costs be?
A. The present UK cost to run 3kW continuously for 1 hour is 23p. The cost of
curing a top coat will therefore be about 8p.
Q. What products are suitable for infrared curing?
A. Stoppers, fillers and sealants. Two pack systems including etch primers, primers, top
coats and clear coats. Water-borne products, lacquers and some air drying products.
Q. Do some colours cure quicker than others?
A. Only with short wave infrared. The infrared produced by this system cures all
colours in the same time.
Q. Do you need to remove rubber and plastic parts?
A. The larger parts can be heated without harming them. However they should
not be handled until cool to prevent deforming. Any thin plastic parts should
be removed or masked with foil tape to protect them.
3
Q. Will infrared cure the next generation of water-borne products?
A. Yes. It is already being used for them.
Q. How fast does the INFRA RED system dry the Paint?
A. 15-20 minutes will be needed for two pack paints. Times vary slightly between
products.
Q. Can the emitters be replaced?
A. Yes, but don’t forget they have been designed to last for years.
Q. Do you have to have two settings, flash off and cure?
A. No. Because of the gentle warm up curve of ceramics only one setting is
needed.
Q. What distance should the unit be from the panel?
A. 450mm or 18 inches.

INFRA RED USER INSTRUCTIONS
In all these applications the INFRA RED should be positioned approximately 500mm
(18”) from the panel being painted. Times are a guide only an will vary slightly
depending on the product manufacturer.
Moisture Removal
Use the INFRA RED to dry any panels before starting any painting or filing job. This
will ensure that there is no moisture remaining, and will prevent problems
developing as the job progresses.
A 5 minute application should be sufficient. Allow the panel to cool to about 25
degrees before proceeding.
Filler
Problems arise from coating fillers before they have completely set. This can arise
through cold conditions or when to little catalyst has been used.
The use of the INFRA RED for 5-7 mins will ensure that the filler has set before
proceeding. Allow it to cool before sanding.
Etch Primer
Cure for 6-7 minutes.
Some etch primers are not intended to be heat cured. Do not use the INFRA
RED with these products.
Primer
Often primer is allowed to air dry leaving the oven free for top coats. This can
result in irregular drying/curing times, depending on the air temperature at the
time.
Apply INFRA RED for approximately 10 minutes. High build primer will need
approximately 15 minutes.
Allow to cool before sanding.
Air Dry Primer
Air dry primer can appear to be dry to touch without being completely set.
Apply INFRA RED for approximately 5 minutes per coat to ensure the product is
completely dry.
Allow to cool before sanding.
Water-borne Base coat
Drying times vary depending on the method of application.
For separate coats dry for approximately 5 minutes between coats.
Wet on wet systems will require longer. Cure for approximately 15 minutes.
Allow to cool before sanding.
6
Water-borne Primer
Drying times will vary depending on film thickness.
Pre heat the panel for 2-3 minutes before applying the primer.
Apply the INFRA RED for 3-5 minutes between coats.
For wet on wet dry for approximately 10 minutes after first preheating the panel
as above.
Allow to cool before sanding.
Top Coat
Curing times vary slightly depending on the product being used. Start the INFRA
RED from cold and cure for 15-20 minutes.
Allow to cool if any polishing is required.
Clear Coat
Treat as a top coat.
Stripe Removal
Heat the stripe with the INFRA RED for approximately 1 minute. This will enable
you to peel the stripe off without scraping.
INFRA RED Footprint
