Location :
Subject : NETWORK MULTI PDL PRINTER BOARD D-1/NETWORK PRINTER BOARD E-1
Reason : The Network Multi PDL Printer Board D-1 and the Network Printer Board E-1 have been marketed in
Europe for use with the GP215/216. This bulletin provides an overview of the boards and points to keep in mind when servicing them.
Details : <Outline of the Product>
The printer board is designed for installation to a GP215/216 Series copier so as to enable the copier to function as a printer. The board possesses a Centronics parallel port for connection to a computer, and comes with an Ethernet interface as standard, requiring no additional board for connection to a network. The network interface of the board is compatible with 100Base-TX for high-speed communication as well as with widely used 10Base-T. The network protocol of the board is compatible with TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and AppleTalk so that it is capable of receiving data from a network on which these various protocols are used. The Network Printer Board E-1 is capable of handling Hewlett Packard's PCL5e, while the Multi PDL Network Printer Board-D1 is capable of handling PCL5e and PostScript 3. PCL5e is supported by 46 internal fonts, and PostScript is supported by 136 internal fonts. (All these fonts come as standards.)
No.: Gen-604A Rev. 1
DATE: 21.08.98
<Features>
1. The board is equipped with an MIPS R4700 CPU (operating frequency of 133 MHz) of a RISC
type, providing high processing power. It is also equipped with a 32-MB memory (DIMM). The combination ensures high-speed processing of print data.
2. The Network Printer Board E-1 supports PCL5e, and comes with 46 types of PCL fonts as
standard. The Multi PDL Network Printer Board-D1 also supports PCL5e; it is equipped with a PostScript 3 interpreter, and comes with 136 types of PS fonts as standards.
3. The board supports 10Base-T, which is used for Ethernet, and 100Base-TX, which is designed
for high-speed Ethernet communication. (The board comes with both as standard.) Since it also comes with an AUI connector as standard, it accepts 10Base5 directly and 10Base2 by way of an external transceiver.
4. The board comes with a 2.1-GB hard disk drive as standard, and therefor is capable of spooling

print jobs and downloading external fonts.
5. If connected to a TCP/IP network, using WebTools enables the board to check the processing status of print through a browser (Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer) or to install printer drivers and utilities.

Points to Note for Servicing :
1. Points to Note during Installation
1.1 Copier's IP Version It is important to make sure that the copier's IP version is 49.03 or higher before installing the printer board. Note, however, that version 49.03 is subject to the following:
• If 41 or more two-sided copies of A4/LTR are directed to the sort bins, a jam tends to occur in
the duplexing unit after generating 20 copies.
• If a fax file containing data equivalent of 150 pages or more is handled, a system down tends
to occur.
• If a pick-up jam occurs as a result of copying operation in a copier/printer combination, the
printer fails to turn off the message "Unknown Copies" after recovery. If any of the above is likely to be an important concern, be sure to upgrade the copier's IP version to 58.01 or higher.
1.2 Installation Work See the Installation Procedure that comes with the GP Expansion Board Base Unit-B2.
If you are connecting a 10/100Base-T cable, be sure to disconnect the dummy plug from the connector of the printer board before starting to install the printer board to the copier. (After installation, you are likely to find it difficult to disconnect the plug.)

1.3 Media Pack The printer board comes with a media pack that contains user software and documentation. Instruct the user's administrator to make the appropriate printer driver settings, install the printer driver, and set up the computer after installing the printer board and checking its operation.
• User Software CD
The user software CD contains the following software:
Printer Driver
Utilities The utilities and the PCL printer driver are stored in folders created for different languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish). Each folder is divided further according to OS. The PostScript printer driver is stored in the Psoption folder. (The folders are created for different languages and OSs.) The terms of the contract must be accepted before using the user software. Ask the user to refer to the End User Lisence Agreement contained in the media pack describing the terms in detail. Inform the user also that opening the user software CD represents agreeing to the terms of the contract. Further, inform the user that the terms require that the user purchase the Network Multi PDL Printer Board D-1 before installing the PostScript printer driver.
• User Documentation Getting Started
This document is intended for the user's administrator and end users, describing how to install the printer driver and utilities and how to make settings when printing from a Macintosh- or Windows-compatible computers.
Administrator Guide
This document is intended for the user's administrator, describing how to make basic settings and control methods when using the board after connecting it to a computer or a network. Each topic is discussed in relation to computer type and network environment.
User Guide
This document is intended for the user's administrator and end users, describing how to set print options, how to print from a Macintosh- or Windows-compatible computer, and how to use the utilities and other software that come with the board.

1.4 Points to Note about the Printer Driver If you run WebTools on version 1.0 system software, the PCL printer driver (old version; tends to generate a somewhat larger margin) stored on the hard disk will be installed. Since the User Software CD contains the latest printer driver, instruct the user to use the User Software CD for installation without WebTools. If the old version was installed as a result of using WebTools, upgrading may be performed by writing over the existing printer driver using the User Software CD. The system software of version 1.01, in passing, contains the latest WebTools printer driver. To check the version of the system software, see 2. "Checking the Version."
1.5 Points to Note about Default Paper Size If English is selected for the language, the default paper size will be Letter. If A4 is used as in the case of Europe, be sure to select A4 during set-up work. Selecting a language other than English will select A4 as the default paper size.
1.6 Printing Out the Configuration Page Advise the user's administrator to print out the configuration page as follows to keep a record of the settings after making printer board settings:
1) Press the Option key on the copier's control panel to bring up the Printer Basic screen on the touch display.
2) Select "Functions."
3) Select "Print Pages."
4) Select "Configuration."
5) Store away the generated configuration page showing the current settings.
2. Checking the Version The version of the system software used by the printer board may be checked on the Printer screen appearing on the touch panel display in response to a press on the Option key on the copier's control panel.
