2. Design and function
2.1 Description
The model PG43SA-D diaphragm pressure gauge has been
designed specically for the highest safety requirements in the
pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Through its patented diaphragm monitoring, the risk of an undetected rupture of the diaphragm is eliminated since a red warning dot is immediately displayed on the dial. In the event of a diaphragm rupture, a second barrier in the instrument ensures the reliable separation of ambience and process. The diaphragm pressure gauge transmits the pressure, purely
mechanically and without transmission uid, from the process to the
pressure element. Due to their thickness, the diaphragm elements are very robust and have high overpressure safety, ensuring a safe pressure measurement without any risk of contamination.
The ush welded diaphragm element in conjunction with the aseptic
process connections enables a dead-space free connection to the process.
The PG43SA-D in hygienic design can be used for CIP (cleaning in place) and SIP (sterilisation in place) and in wash-down areas, or it can be completely sterilised in an autoclave. The measuring instru-
ment can thus be cleaned reliably and time-eciently. The model PG43SA-D conforms to the 3-A Sanitary Standard and is certied in
accordance with EHEDG.

2.2 Integrated diaphragm monitoring
Second barrier
Diaphragm element
White: Diaphragm element intact
Status display
Red: Diaphragm element defective
If the status display shows the red warning dot, the measures in chapter 6 “Faults” must be followed.
Function
The continuous diaphragm monitoring indicates the current state of the pressure element. A defective diaphragm element will be immediately indicated to the user as a red warning dot on the dial (see picture). With the aid of the status display, the integrity of the pressure element can be checked both prior to installation and during operation.
Second barrier
The diaphragm element serves as the rst barrier between process
and ambience. A second barrier, located behind it, guarantees the reliable separation of ambience and process, even in the event of a rupture in the diaphragm element. The risk of any contamination between ambience and process is eliminated by the second barrier.

Reference chamber
The reference chamber is an evacuated pressure chamber behind the diaphragm element and serves as a reference for the status display of the diaphragm element.
In the event of a damaged diaphragm element
 Vacuum in the reference chamber collapses  Reference chamber is pressurised with process pressure  Medium can ingress into the reference chamber  Colour of the status display changes to red.  Measuring instrument is defective and can no longer be used as a
reference for the process pressure.
 Replace measuring instrument. The dismounting of the measuring
instrument is described in chapter 8.
 Despite a damaged diaphragm element, due to the second barrier

4. Transport, packaging and storage
4.1 Transport
Check the measuring instrument for any damage that may have been caused by transport. Obvious damage must be reported immediately.
CAUTION! Damage through improper transport
With improper transport, a high level of damage to property can occur.
When unloading packed goods upon delivery as well as during internal transport, proceed carefully and observe the symbols on the packaging.
With internal transport, observe the instructions in chapter 4.2 “Packaging and storage”.
4.2 Packaging and storage
Do not remove packaging until just before mounting. Keep the packaging, especially the diaphragm protection (if available). This will provide optimum protection during transport (e.g. cleaning, change in installation site, sending for repair).
CAUTION! Damage to the diaphragm during unpacking
With improper unpacking, a high level of damage to property can occur.
Avoid touching the diaphragm after removing the diaphragm protection. Impermissible mechanical loading (e.g. pressing the diaphragm) can result in measuring deviations or even in the complete failure of the measuring instrument.
Permissible conditions at the place of storage
Storage and transport temperature: -30 ... +70 °C Protect the instrument from dust.

5. Commissioning, operation
5. Commissioning, operation
5.1 Mounting preparation
 To protect the instrument from mechanical damage keep it in the
outer carton until installation.
 The measuring instrument should only be removed from the
packaging shortly before mounting at the measuring point.
 With CIP (cleaning in place) it is recommended to clean the
measuring instrument again after mounting, using the established process of the operator.
 With COP (cleaning out of place) it is recommended to clean the
measuring instrument again before mounting, using the established process of the operator.
 On removal from the packaging, and during mounting, particular
care must be taken to avoid damage and any mechanical deformation to the diaphragm.
In case of a zero oset, carry out a zero adjustment. See chapter
5.6 “Zero adjustment”.
5.2 Installation
 Do not damage the diaphragm; scratches on the diaphragm (e.g.
from sharp-edged objects) are the main causes of corrosion.
 For sealing, choose appropriate seals. For ange mounting, only use sealings with a suciently large
inner diameter and centre them; contact with the diaphragm leads
to measuring errors.
 When using soft or PTFE sealings, observe the instructions of the
sealing manufacturer, particularly with regard to tightening torque
and load cycles.
12

EN
For installation, in accordance with the tting and ange standards
the appropriate fastenings, such as screws and nuts, must be used.
 The vent hole at the underside of the case must not be closed. Nominal position per EN 837-3 / 9.6.6 gure 7: 90° ( )
5.3 Permissible ambient and operating temperatures
When mounting the instrument it must be ensured that, taking into
consideration the inuence of convection and heat radiation, no
deviation above or below the permissible ambient and medium temperatures can occur. The inuence of temperature on the indication accuracy must be observed.
In order to avoid any additional heating, the instruments must not be exposed to direct solar irradiation while in operation.
5.4 Permissible conditions at the installation site
The instruments should always be installed in locations free from vibration.
5.5 Commissioning
During the commissioning process pressure surges must be avoided at all costs.

5.6 Zero adjustment
External zero adjustment, setting range ±15°
The zero adjustment can be made with a slotted screwdriver after the removal of the sealing plug on the top of the case. Deviations in the display due to natural uctuations in the atmospheric pressure and altitude variations (up to 2,000 m height above sea level) can be compensated with the zero adjustment.
5.7 Autoclaving
 Observe the permissible conditions of autoclaving, see chapter
9.3 “Permissible temperature”
 During the autoclaving process, no weight-loading must be exert-
ed via the case and the instrument must not lie on its window.
After the rst autoclaving cycles, the window slightly arches
outward. This has no eect on the function of the instrument.
 Depending on the autoclaving process, whitish residues can build
up on the window and pointer. This has no eect on the function of
the instrument.
Check the zero point. In case of a zero oset, carry out a zero
adjustment. See chapter 5.6 “Zero adjustment”.

7.1 Maintenance
 The instruments are maintenance-free.  The indicator should be checked once or twice every year. For this
the instrument must be disconnected from the process to check
with a pressure testing device.
 Repairs should only be carried out by the manufacturer or, follow-
ing prior consultation with the manufacturer, by correspondingly
qualied skilled personnel.
7.2 Cleaning
Suitable for SIP and CIP cleaning processes, if appropriate media
are used and the permissible specications are complied with.
When cleaning from outside (“wash down”), observe the permissible temperature and ingress protection.
For sterilisation in an autoclave, observe the instructions in chapter
5.7 “Autoclaving”.
Vent hole
In order to avoid any change in pressure within the case, the measuring instrument features a vent hole at the case bottom. In case of condensation formation within the case or ingress of low water quantities from outside, this can be drained through the vent hole.

2. Aufbau und Funktion
2.1 Beschreibung
EHEDG zertiziert.
