The AC38 Digital Clamp Multimeter is warranted against any defects of material
or workmanship within a period of one (1) year following the date of purchase of
the multimeter by the original purchaser or original user.
Any multimeter claimed to be defective during the warranty period should be
returned with proof of purchase to an authorized Wavetek Meterman Service
Center or to the local Wavetek Meterman dealer or distributor where your multi­meter was purchased. See maintenance section for details.
Any implied warranties arising out of the sale of a Wavetek Meterman multimeter,
including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for
a particular purpose, are limited in duration to the above stated one (1) year peri­od. Wavetek Meterman shall not be liable for loss of use of the multimeter or other
incidental or consequential damages, expenses, or economical loss or for any
claim or claims for such damage, expenses or economical loss.
Some states do not allow limitations on how long implied warranties last or the
exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above lim­itations or exclusions may not apply to you.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights
which vary from state to state.

WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS

■ This instrument is EN61010-1 certified for Installation Category II. It is
recommended for use with local level power distribution, appliances,
portable equipment, etc, where only smaller transient overvoltages may
occur, and not for primary supply lines, overhead lines and cable systems.

■ Do not exceed the maximum overload limits per function (see
specifications) nor the limits marked on the instrument itself. ■ Exercise
extreme caution when: measuring voltage >20V // current >10mA // AC
power line with inductive loads // AC power line during electrical storms //
current, when the fuse blows in a circuit with open circuit voltage >600 V //
servicing CRT equipment. ■ Inspect DMM, test leads and accessories
before every use. Do not use any damaged part. ■ Never ground yourself
when taking measurements. Do not touch exposed circuit elements or
probe tips. ■ Always measure current in series with the load – NEVER

INTRODUCTION

The AC 38 is a pocket-sized, autoranging digital clamp meter that measures AC
current up to 400A, AC voltage up to 750V and continuity. A Data Hold button
allows to maintain a measurement reading for later viewing.

Unpacking and Inspection

Your shipping carton should include the digital clamp meter, a carrying case, one
test lead set (one black, one red), two 1.5V button batteries (installed) and this
manual. If any of the items are damaged or missing, return the complete package
to the place of purchase for an exchange.

Das AC 38 ist ein kompaktes, digitales Zangenmultimeter mit automatischer
Bereichswahl. Es mißt Wechselstrom bis 400A, Wechselspannung bis 750V
und Durchgang. Eine Data Hold Taste erlaubt den Meßwert für spätere

Ablesung festzuhalten.

Gebrauchsvorbereitung - Auspacken: Die Verpackung sollte enthalten: ein
digitales Zangenmultimeter, eine Tragetasche, ein Paar Meßkabel (ein
schwarz, ein rot), zwei 1,5V Batterien (im Gerät) und diese Anleitung. Sollte
ein Teil beschädigt sein oder fehlen, kehren Sie bitte zur Verkaufsstelle zurück
für einen Umtausch.

pinza, un estuche de transporte, un juego de puntas (una negra y otra roja),
dos pilas de botón de 1.5 V (instaladas) y este manual. Si falta algún
componente u observa daños, devuelva el conjunto al lugar donde lo adquirió
para que se lo cambien.

Le AC 38 est un pince-multimètre compact à sélection automatique de
gammes. Il mesure le courant alternatif jusqu’à 400A, la tension alternative
jusqu’à 750V et la continuité. Un bouton “Data Hold” permet de maintenir

l’affichage pur une lecture ultérieure.

Préparation pour l’Emploi - Déballage: Votre emballage devrait contenir: un
multimètre-pince, une sacoche, une paire de cordons de test (un noir, un
rouge), une pile 9V (dans l’appareil), une carte de garantie et ce manuel. Si
une pièce manque ou est endommagée, retournez à votre point de vente pour
un échange.

Instrument Familiarization

1) Transformer Jaws: Designed to pick up the AC current flowing through the con­ductor.

2) Jaw Opening Lever: Press lever to open transformer jaws. When pressure on
lever is released, the jaws will close again.

3) Digital Display: 3-1/2 digit LCD (max. reading 1999), decimal point, AC~ and
unit annunciators.

4) Function Switch: Turns instrument on and selects ACA, ACV, or continuity
( ) function.

5) Data Hold Switch: Holds reading for all functions and ranges. Always release
HOLD before taking a new measurement.

6) Wrist Strap: Prevents the instrument from slipping off the hand while in use.

7) Input Terminals: The black test lead is always connected to the “COM” input
and red lead to the “+” input when measuring ACV and continuity.

E • Familiarización con el instrumento:

1) Pinza del transformador: Diseñada para captar la corriente alterna que fluye

5) Bouton Data Hold: Maintient la lecture pour toutes fonctions et gammes.
Désactivez HOLD pour prendre de nouvelles mesures.

6) Boucle: Maintient l’appareil pendant la mesure.

7) Entrées: Pour les mesures de tension alternative et de continuité, connectez
toujours le cordon de mesure noir à l’entrée COM, et le rouge à
l’entrée “+”.

MEASURING PROCEDURES

AC Current Measurement

∂ Set the slide switch to A~ position. ∑ Open spring-loaded clamp by pressing
lever on left side of meter. ∏ Position clamp around wire or conductor and release
clamp lever. Make sure that the clamp is entirely closed. The clamp must be posi­tioned around only one conductor. If it is placed around two or more current car­rying conductors, the reading is FALSE. π Read the measured value on the dis­play.

AC Voltage Measurement

❶ Set the slide switch to V~ position. ❷Connect black test lead to the “COM” ter­minal and the red test lead to the “+’’ terminal. Connect probe tips to circuit and
read value.

Continuity Measurement

❶ Set the slide switch to position. ❷ Connect black lead to COM terminal
and red lead to “+” terminal. ❸ Make sure that power to circuit under test is off.
Connect test leads to circuit. ❹ Buzzer sounds if resistance is less than 300Ω.

Data Hold

When measuring in tight locations or dimly lit areas, you can push the Data Hold
button to “freeze” the measurement reading for later viewing. Don’t forget to
press the button again in order to release Data Hold when taking a new mea­surement.

TROUBLESHOOTING/REPAIR

In case of malfunction during the operation of the meter, the following
steps should be performed in order to isolate the cause of the problem:
❶ Check the batteries. ❷ Review the operating instructions for possi­ble mistakes in operating procedure. ❸ Check clamp against a known
current source ❹ Check test leads for continuity (voltage and continu­ity).

Except for the replacement of the batteries, repair of the clamp should
be performed only by a Factory Authorized Service Center or by other
qualified instrument service personnel.

Front panel and case can be cleaned with a mild solution of detergent
and water. Apply sparingly with a soft cloth and let dry completely

before using. Do not use aromatic hydrocarbons or chlorinated sol­vents for cleaning.

D • Fehlersuche/Reparatur

Bei Problemen bitte folgendes prüfen: ❶Batterieladung, ❷Meßprozedur
Einen bekannten Stromwert mit der Zange prüfen.❹Meßkabel prüfen
(Spannungs-und Durchgangsmessung).

Mit Ausnahme des Batteriewechsels sollte jede Reparatur der Stromzange nur
durch eine Wavetek-anerkannte Servicestelle vorgenommen werden.

Das Gehäuse kann mit einer milden Seifenlösung gereinigt werden. Vor
Gebrauch gut trocknen lassen.
