Important information about your Toyota

Occupant restraint systems
Toyota encourages you and your family to take the time to read Section 13 of this Owner’s Manual carefully. In terms of helping you understand how you can receive the maximum benefit of the occupant restraint systems this vehicle provides, Section 13 of this Owner’s Manual is the most important Section for you and your family to read.
Section 13 describes the function and operation concerning seats, seat belts, SRS airbags and child restraint systems of this vehicle and some potential hazards you should be aware of. These systems work together along with the overall structure of this vehicle in order to provide occupant restraint in the event of a crash. The effect of each system is enhanced when it is used properly and together with other systems. No single occupant restraint system can, by itself, provide you or your family with the equal level of restraint which these systems can provide when used together. That is why it is important for you and your family to understand the purpose and proper use of each of these systems and how they relate to each other.
The purpose of all occupant restraint systems is to help reduce the possibility of death or serious injury in the event of a collision. None of these systems, either individually or together, can ensure that there is no injury in the event of collision. However, the more you know about these systems and how to use them properly, the greater your chances become of surviving an accident without death or serious injury.
Seat belts provide the primary restraint to all occupants of the vehicle, and every occupant of the vehicle should wear seat belts properly at all times. Children should always be secured in child restraint systems that are appropriate for their age and size. SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbags are, as their names imply, designed to work with, and be supplemental to, seat belts and are not substitutes for them. SRS airbags can be very effective in reducing the risk of head, chest and knee injuries by preventing contact of the head, chest and knee with interior portions of the vehicle.
iii
2007MY CAMRY from Oct. ’06 Prod. (OM33748U)
’07Camry_U (L/O 0608)
In order to be effective, the SRS airbags must deploy with tremendous speed. The rapid deployment of the SRS airbags makes the SRS airbags themselves potential sources of death or serious injury if an occupant is too close to an airbag, or if an object or some part of his or her body has been placed between the occupant and the airbag at the time of deployment. This is just one example of how the instructions in Section 13 of this Owner’s Manual will help ensure proper use of the occupant restraint systems, and increase the safety they can provide to you and your family in the event of an accident.
Toyota recommends you to read the provisions in Section 13 carefully and refer to them as needed during your time of ownership of this vehicle.
Event data recorder
Your vehicle has computers that monitor and control certain aspects of your vehicle. These computers assist in driving and maintaining optimal vehicle performance. Besides storing data useful for troubleshooting, there is a system to record data in a crash or a near car crash event. This is called an Event Data Recorder (EDR).
The SRS airbag sensor assembly contains the EDR. In a crash or a near car crash event, this device may record some or all of the following information:
D Engine speed
D Whether the brake pedal was applied or not
D Vehicle speed
D To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed
D Position of the transmission selector lever
D Whether the driver and front passenger wore the seat
belts or not
D Driver’s seat position
D Front passenger’s occupant classification
iv
2007MY CAMRY from Oct. ’06 Prod. (OM33748U)
’07Camry_U (L/O 0608)
D SRS airbag deployment data
D SRS airbag system diagnostic data
If your vehicle is equipped with a vehicle stability control (VSC) system, its Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may contain another EDR. There are a variety of driving situations which include activating the VSC under which the VSC EDR will record certain information. The VSC EDR may record some or all of the following information:
D Behavior of the vehicle
D Steering wheel angle
D Vehicle speed
D To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed
D To what extent the brake pedal was applied
D To what extent the ECU controlled the condition of
the 4 wheels
D Vehicle stability control system diagnostic data
The information above is intended to be used for the purpose of improving vehicle safety performance. Unlike general data recorders, the EDR does not record sound data such as conversation between passengers.
Toyota will not disclose the data recorded in an EDR to a third party except when:
D An agreement from the vehicle’s owner (or the leas-
ing company for a leased vehicle) is obtained
D Officially requested by the police or other authorities
D Used as a defense for Toyota in a law suit
D Ordered by the court
However, if necessary Toyota will:
D Use the data for research on Toyota vehicle safety
performance
D Disclose the data to a third party for research pur-
poses without disclosing details of the vehicle owner, and only when it is deemed necessary
D Disclose summarized data cleared of vehicle identifi-
cation information to a non−Toyota organization for research purposes

Accessories, spare parts and
modification of your Toyota
A wide variety of nongenuine spare parts and accessories for Toyota vehicles are currently available in the market. You should know that Toyota does not warrant these products and is not responsible for their performance, repair, or replacement, or for any damage they may cause to, or adverse effect they may have on, your Toyota vehicle.
This vehicle should not be modified with nongenuine Toyota products. Modification with nongenuine Toyota products could affect its performance, safety or durability, and may even violate governmental regulations. In addition, damage or performance problems resulting from the modification may not be covered under warranty.
Spark i gnition system o f your Toyota
The spark ignition system in your Toyota meets all requirements of the Canadian InterferenceCausing Equipment Standard.
Installation of a mobile
two−way radio system
As the installation of a mobile twoway radio system in your vehicle could affect electronic systems such as multiport fuel injection system/sequential multiport fuel injection system, electronic throttle control system, cruise control system, antilock brake system, traction control system, vehicle stability control system, SRS airbag system and seat belt pretensioner system, be sure to check with your Toyota dealer for precautionary measures or special instructions regarding installation.
Smart key system
Users of any electrical medical devices such as implanted pacemakers should consult the manufacturer of the device for information about its operation under the influence of radio waves. Radio waves could have unexpected effects on the operation of such medical devices. For details, see “Keys” on page 16 in Section 1−2.

Tires and loading on your
Toyota
Underinflated or overinflated tire pressure and the excess load may result in the deterioration of steering ability and braking ability, leading to an accident. Check the tire inflation pressure periodically and be sure to keep the load limits given in this Owner’s Manual. For details about tire inflation pressure and load limits, see pages 385 and 310.
Leak detection pump
This pump performs fuel evaporation leakage check. This check is done approximately five hours after the engine is turned off. So you may hear sound coming from underneath the luggage compartment for several minutes. It does not indicate a malfunction.
Scrapping of your Toyota
The SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner devices in your Toyota contain explosive chemicals. If the vehicle is scrapped with the airbags and pretensioners left as they are, this may cause an accident such as fire. Be sure to have the systems of the SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner removed and disposed of by the qualified service shop or by your Toyota dealer before you dispose of your vehicle.
Perchlorate Material
Special handling may apply, See www.dtsc.ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlorate.
Your vehicle has components that may contain perchlorate. These components may include airbag, seat belt pretensioners, and wireless remote control batteries.

Keys (with key cylinder−type ignition switch)
Type A
’07Camry_U (L/O 0608)
Your vehicle is supplied with two kinds of keys.
1. Master keys (black)—
These keys work in every lock. Your Toyota dealer will need one of them to make a new key with a builtin transponder chip.
Since the doors and trunk lid can be locked without a key, you should always carry a spare master key in case you accidentally lock your keys inside the vehicle.
Type B only—This key is fitted with the wireless remote control transmitter. For information on use of the wireless remote control transmitter, see “Wireless remote control” on page 20 in this Section.
2. Sub key (gray)—
This key will not work in the glove box, trunk and the door located behind the rear seat armrest (on some models).
To protect items locked in the trunk or glove box when using valet parking, leave the sub key with the attendant.
A transponder chip for engine immobilizer system has been placed in the head of the master and sub keys. These chips are needed to enable the system to function correctly, so be careful not to lose these keys. If you make your own duplicate key, you will not be able to cancel the system or start the engine.

NOTICE
When using a key containing a transponder chip, observe the following precautions:
z When starting the engine, do not
use the key with a key ring resting on the key grip and do not press the key ring against the key grip. Otherwise the engine may not start, or may stop soon after it starts.
z When starting the engine, do not
use the key with other transponder keys around (including keys of other vehicles) and do not press other key plates against the key grip. Otherwise the engine may not start, or may stop soon after it starts. If this happens, remove the key once and then insert it again after removing other transponder keys (including keys of other vehicles) from the ring or while gripping or covering them with your hand to start the engine.
z Do not bend the key grip.
15
2007MY CAMRY from Oct. ’06 Prod. (OM33748U)
z Do not cover the key grip with any
material that cuts off electromagnetic waves.
z Do not knock the key hard against
other objects.
z Do not leave the key exposed to
high temperatures for a long period, such as on the dashboard and hood under direct sunlight.
z Do not put the key in water or
wash it in an ultrasonic washer.
z Do not use the key with electromag-
netic materials.
’07Camry_U (L/O 0608)
KEY NUMBER PLATE Your key number is shown on the plate.
Keep the plate in a safe place such as your wallet, not in the vehicle.
If you should lose your keys or if you need additional keys, duplicates can be made by a Toyota dealer using the key number.
We recommend writing down the key number and storing it in a safe place.
Keys (with smart key system)
The key consists of an electronic key and a mechanical key. The mechanical key is for emergency use. If the electronic key does not operate, you can open the driver’s door using the mechanical key.
1. Electronic keys—These keys can lock or unlock all the doors and can open the trunk by using the wireless remote control function or entry function of the smart key system.
2. Mechanical keys—These keys can lock or unlock the driver’s door, the glove box and the door located behind the rear seat armrest.
16
2007MY CAMRY from Oct. ’06 Prod. (OM33748U)
’07Camry_U (L/O 0608)
Spare keys should not be left in the cabin. In the event that a spare key is left in the cabin, the smart key system will remain actuated even after the doors have been locked. Under these circumstances, the trunk can be opened even after the driver has exited and locked the vehicle, increasing the danger of theft. (Refer to “OPENING TRUNK WITH SMART KEY SYSTEM” on page 46 in this Section.)
To protect items locked in the trunk or the glove box when using valet parking, leave the electronic key with the attendant. Keep the mechanical key with you. For details about locking the trunk opener switch, see “—Luggage security system” on page 47 in this Section.
A transponder chip for engine immobilizer system has been placed in the electronic keys. These chips are needed to enable the system to function correctly, so be careful not to lose these keys.
CAUTION
D People with implanted pacemakers
or cardiac defibrillators should keep away from the smart key system antennas, because the radio waves may affect the operation of such devices. For the antenna locations see “ANTENNA LOCATION” on page 32 in this Section.
D Users of any electrical medical de-
vice other than implanted pacemakers and implanted cardiac defibrillators should consult the manufacturer of the device for information about its operation under the influence of radio waves. Radio waves could have unexpected effects on the operation of such medical devices.
D If necessary, the entry function can
be disabled. See “DISABLING THE SMART KEY SYSTEM” on page 36 in this Section.
NOTICE
When using a electronic key containing a transponder chip, observe the following precautions:
z Do not affix any material that cuts
off electromagnetic waves (such as a metal seal) on the electronic key.
z Do not knock the electronic key
hard against other objects.
z Do not leave the electronic key ex-
posed to high temperatures for a long period, such as on the dashboard or hood under direct sunlight.
z Do not put the electronic key in
water or wash it in an ultrasonic washer.
z Do not keep the electronic key to-
gether with the products emitting electromagnetic waves such as a cellular phone.
