1. COMPONENTS

With a reading speed factor of appro x. 40 the CD-W524E is a modern high performance CD-RW drive system. It is able to write to CD-R media with a writing speed of 4X, 8X, 12X, and 16X (and Z-CL V 16-20-24) and it is able to write to CD-RW media with a writing speed of 4X and 10X

2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Your TEAC CD-RW dr ive supports all major operating systems (with the exception of MS-DOS and Windows 3.1x) and all major hardware platforms. To get the full performance it is recommended to use a sys­tem environment whichs computing power is equiv alent to an IBM com­patible PC with a P entium II CPU with 300MHz clock frequency or more, 64MByte RAM or more and a fixed disk with an access time of 12ms or less.
Important:
1. To use the TEAC CD-RW drive, an IDE (ATAPI) controller is required. The necessary drivers are shipped with the corre­sponding controller card or they are available from the manu­facturer of the controller.
2. Please do not install your TEAC CD-RW drive near sources of radiating heat like hard disks.
Selecting the CD-R/CD-RW media for your TEAC CD-RW drive
The best results and the highest performance are ensured by using TEAC CD-R/CD-RW media. Your dealer will tell you the sources of the respective CD-Rs and CD-RWs.

Do not operate your TEAC CD-RW drive under operating conditions other than listed in 8. Specifications . If you believ e y our TEAC CD-RW drive to be defective please contact your dealer or any of the TEAC facilities.
Important Hints for Using the CD-RW Drive
What is stated in the specification must be observed for the user to get the most out of the drive. Especially, the following precautions must be observed for quality of recording.
OPERATION
• high rates of moisture
• temperatures above the specified maximum
• large temperature differences
• large amounts of dust and dirt
• vibrations and
• direct exposure to sun light.
(a) Be careful about the use of the disk. What is stated by the disk
manufacturer must be observed for the usage.
(b) Don't let the disk and the tray become dirty.
– Check to see that the disk is bereft of scratch, dust, fingerprint
or any other dirt.
– Check to see that the disk tray is clean. If the disk tr ay becomes
dirty , clean it.
– If the disk becomes dirty, clean it as recommended by the disk
manufacturer . The disk surf ace is apt to be damaged, so it must be cleaned only as per instruction.

(c) Avoid vibration or impact.
During recording or playing, don't subject the drive to vibration or impact. Vibration or impact especially during recording can result in poor recording. The following problems also can result occa­sionally : – The disk becomes defective because of faulty recording, and
cannot be played bac k.
– Additional recording cannot be made because of faulty previ-
ous recording.
(d) Data protection
Recording may not be completed normally in some cases due to a malfunction of the drive, a defective medium, etc. Therefore, use the following precautions . – Be sure to confirm the recording status by playing back the
newly recorded data after completing the recording operation.
– Be sure to store the source file from which the data is recorded
until the recording is confirmed.
– Do not repair the drive or replace a part of the drive under cir-
cumstances other than designated assurance conditions.
e) Buffer underrun prevention
The drive has a function to prevent a buffer underrun.

Cleaning and maintenance of your TEAC CD-RW drive
TEAC CD-RW drive will not need maintenance if used as specified in this manual. Usually there are only problems with dirty or defective CDs.
Important:
Do not use cleaning CDs which will remove dirt of the lense of the laser aided by a little brush. Do not clean the inner parts of your TEAC CD-RW drive with com­pressed air. Any of these methods may cause damage to your TEAC CD-RW drive.

Insert the disk with its label facing up.
Note:
Please ensure the CD is inserted in a way where the plugs at the rear of the disk tray and the spring loaded plug on the front prevent the disk from f alling out of the tray. This is of major importance if the drive is used in one of the vertical positions. When using an 8cm-CD disk in horizontal position, place it on the specified position at the center of the tray. Nev er use it in the vertical position.
Headphone jack (ø 3.5mm)
Audio output jack for stereo headphone or external speakers. Use a 3.5mm-diameter stereo mini-plug.

Eject emergency hole
When the power is switched OFF and the eject button does NOT function, insert a metal rod (diameter of 1.2mm or less) into this hole at a right angle to the front panel, then push the rod to eject the disk. Do this only when the de vice is switched off and the ON/ BUSY indicator is NOT lit.

With S2 open (jumper not set) the TEAC CD-W524E ist set to master or slave mode by setting the jumpers S3 and S4. The set mode is irrespective of the CSEL signal. Master/sla v e mode is de­termined by CSEL if S2 is shorted (jumper set). In this case S3 and S4 are irrespective for setting the mode.

5. CONNECTION TO A PERSONAL COMPUTER

5.1 Drive Installation Directions

There are three possible positions for installation: Horizontal installa­tion with the eject button to the right, and vertical installation in both possible directions. The installation position is not allowed to be tilted more than 10 degrees out of the vertical or horizontal position.
Note:
Please use for the installation the fixing holes in the sides or on the
bottom of the CD-RW drive.

5.2 Installation/Connection to Your Personal Computer

(1) Switch OFF the personal computer and remove the blank panel
fitted to the front of the 5.25-inch slot, then secure the CD-W524E using the provided screws .

(2) Connect the power cable, the interface cable of the IDE interface
If the mounting rails are necessary for installation in a personal computer, contact the personal computer maker or dealer.
Note:
Be sure to use mounting screws provided. If longer than specified screw is used, the CD-W524E may be damaged. Please ensure to set the master or slave jumpers correctly.

The CD-W524E can output the LINE OUT audio signal through the headphone jack via the Sound Card.

7. INSTALLING DRIVERS AND THE WRITER SOFTWARE

As a general precaution the installation of the hardware has to be car­ried out as described before. The software installation starts with acti­vating the reading functionality of the drive as this is well known with any conventional CD-ROM drive. If the reading functionality is avail­able the next installation step is to achie ve the writing functionality pro­vided of the writer software. More details according the installation of your writer software you will find in its documention [Help].

7.1 Installing Drivers with Windows 95/98/ME/2000

According to the Plug-and-Play conventions the CD-RW drive is rec­ognized as a standard CD-ROM drive first. To make this possible the drives hardware installation must hav e been carried out correctly . After switching on your computer, Windows 95/98/ME/2000 will install the necessary driver automatically .
Caution:
Do not install any additional drivers with Windows 95/98/ME/2000.

7.2 Installing Drivers with Windows NT 4.0 and OS/2

After installing the hardware, the reading functionality of the CD-RW drive is activated with installing the drivers shipped with the correspond­ing operating system. The drivers may be configured and activated aided by the system control. Please ref er to the manual of y our operat­ing system for any details .

7.3 Compatibility or Interoperability to Other IDE
If there are any problems if other drives are connected to the same IDE port (especially IDE-Changer, Phase Change Drive, IOMEGA, and oth­ers), the CD-W524E has to be connected as master as a single drive.

In case the CD-W524E does not operate normally in the environment specified in this manual, contact the representative from whom you purchased the drive or our nearest sales office to you.

8.1 Product Warranty

Two years following the purchase of this unit is the guarantee period. Any failures arising from the design or production of this unit are to be repaired free of charge within one year follo wing purchase. For details, refer to the warranty card provided with the unit.

TEAC Corporation, hereinafter called TEAC, warrants this product against any defect in material and workmanship for tw o (2) years from the date of purchase by the original retail purchaser. According to the following terms this TEAC product will be repaired without charge of labor and materials by the authorized TEAC ser vice stations, by the authorized TEA C dealers and/or their authorized service stations. TEAC , the authorized TEAC ser vice stations, the authorized TEAC dealers and/or their authorized service stations may decide wether the defec­tive product will be repaired or replaced as a whole or partially. The TEAC dependancies, the authorized TEAC service stations, the au­thorized TEA C dealers and/or their authorized service stations will also honour this warranty in the other EC and EFTA member states based on the terms in this warranty conditions.
What is Covered and What is Not Covered.
Except as specified below, this warranty covers any defects in materi­als and workmanship of this product. The following are not cov ered by the warranty:

2. Any unit that has been altered or on which the serial number has been defaced, modified, or removed.
3. Damage, deterioration or malfunction resulting from: (a) accident, misuse, abuse or neglect; (b) failure to follow instructions supplied with the product;

Who May Enforce the Warranty
This warranty may be enforced only by the original retail purchaser.
What We Will Pay For
We will pay all labor and material expenses for items covered by the warranty. Payment of shipping and insurance charge is discussed in the next section of this warranty.
(c) any shipment of the product. An y damage arising of transporta-
tion is the liability of the freigth company. An y damage arising of transportation and any implicit and explicit risks are the liability of the freigth company .This is e xpressivly not a liability of TEA C;
(d) repair or attempted repair by any one not authorized by TEAC to
repair this product;
(e) causes other than product defects, including lack of technical
skill, competence or experience of the user. Especially damages which may arise of incidential use respectively b y improper ven­tilation,
(f) damages caused by improper or incorrect installation of soft-
ware, (g) periodic check-ups , (h) maintenance respectively repair of par ts due to normal wear
and tear, (i) adoptions or adjustments to the product in order to conform to
different national technical or safety standards of any country
other than the one for which the product was originally designed
and manufactured.
How You Can Get Warranty Ser vice
1. If your unit needs ser vice dur ing the warranty period, please con­tact the local authorized distributor for this product. If you are un­able to locate such a distributor, please contact your TEAC facility at the address indicated below.

2. After identifying the nearest authoriz ed service station for this prod­uct the product or any parts believed to be def ective must be shipped freight and insurance prepaid to such service station, together with a copy of this warranty certificate and a copy of your sales receipt, showing the date of purchase. Please ensure to fill out the w arranty certificate correctly (do not forget the serial number of the product). TEAC reserves the right to refuse the guarantee service if the docu­ments are missing or incomplete in the understanding of this terms. If the necessary repairs are covered by the warranty, and if you have sent the product or parts of it to the nearest authorized serv­ice station, the return freight and insurance charges will be prepaid.
Please do not return your unit to the TEAC factory without our prior authorization (see also RMA form)!
Limitations of Liability and Exclusion of Implied Warranties
Unless considered unenforceable or unlawfull under the applicable national law:
1. TEAC’s liability for any defective product is limited to repair or re­placement of the product, at TEAC's option and the option of au­thorized service stations, authorized dealers and their authorized service stations. No one is authorized to assume an y greater liabil­ity on TEA Cs behalf. TEA C shall not be liable f or any damage to any other properties independant of their vir tual or real nature espe­cially there is no liability for any damage to any kind of software and/or any kind of databases caused by TEAC products .Furthermore TEAC is not liable for damages ar ising out of loss of use, loss of revenue or profits, or any other damages, wether incidential, con­sequential, or otherwise.
2. All implied warranties or conditions, including but not limited to war­ranties or conditions of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, hereby are excluded.

TEAC Corporation, nachfolgend TEAC genannt, gewährt dem Erstkäufer für dieses Produkt ab dem Datum des Kaufs zwei (2) Jahre Garantie bezüglich jedes etwaigen Defekts an Material und Herstellung. Gemäß der nachstehenden Bedingungen wird das betreffende TEAC Produkt von den autorisierten TEAC Servicestellen, den autorisierten Facheinzelhändlern oder den autorisierten Servicestellen der Facheinzelhändler ohne Berechnung von Material- und Arbeitskosten repariert. Die Servicestelle entscheidet, ob das Gerät als ganzes oder nur die defekten Teile ausgetauscht werden. Die TEAC Tochtergesellschaften, die autorisierten TEAC Servicestellen und die autorisierten Servicestellen der Facheinzelhändler übernehmen die Garantieleistung in den anderen EG- und EFT A-Mitgliedsstaaten im Rahmen der in dieser Garantie definierten Bestimmungen.
Gewährleistungsumfang
Soweit dies nachfolgend nicht ausgeschlossen wird, umfaßt die Gewährleistung alle etwaigen Defekte an Material und Herstellung. Folgendes ist aus dem Gewährleistungsumfang ausdrücklich ausgeschlossen:
1. Schäden am Gehäuse.
2. Geräte, die v erändert wurden oder deren Seriennummern verfälscht, verändert oder entfernt wurden.
3. Schäden oder F ehlfunktionen, die auf folgendes zurückzuführen sind: (a) Höhere Gewalt, fehlerhafter und/oder nicht bestimmungsgemäßer Gebrauch, (b) Gebrauch, der nicht den im Handbuch angegebenen Verfahrensweisen entspricht, (c) Transportschäden jedweder Art. Für Transportschäden haftet das Frachtunternehmen. (Alle mit dem Transport
verbundenen expliziten und impliziten Risiken sind nicht Bestandteil der Haftung von TEAC.)
(d) unsachgemäß ausgeführte Reparaturen oder Reparatur versuche durch nicht von TEAC autorisierte Personen
und/oder Unternehmen,
(e) alle Schäden, die nicht unmittelbar als Produktdefekt anzusehen sind, insbesondere Schäden, die durch
unsachgemäßen Gebrauch seitens des Anwenders wie beispielsweise unzureichende Kühlluftzufuhr entstanden sind, (f) Schäden durch unsachgemäßes Anwenden der Software, (g) regelmäßige Inspektionen, (h) Wartung bzw. Reparatur von T eilen infolge normalen, betriebsbedingtem Verschleiß, (i) Anpassung an national unterschiedliche technische oder sicherheitsrelevante Anforderungen, wenn das Produkt
nicht in dem Land eingesetzt wird, für das es ursprünglich konzipiert und hergestellt worden ist.
Wer kann die Gewährleistung in Anspruch nehmen
Gewährleistungsansprüche können ausschließlich vom Ersterwerber des Produkts in Anspruch genommen werden.
Welche Kosten werden übernommen
TEAC übernimmt die Kosten für die im Rahmen einer Garantiereparatur anfallende Arbeitszeit und die Materialien, die im Rahmen dieser Gewährleistungsbestimmungen definiert sind. Frachtkosten und Versandversicherung werden im folgenden Abschnitt diskutiert.
Gewährleistungsabwicklung
1. Falls Ihr Gerät innerhalb der Garantiezeit Service benötigt, wenden Sie sich bitte an Ihren für dieses Produkt autorisierten Fachhändler. Falls Sie in Ihrer Nähe keinen Fachhändler finden, nehmen Sie bitte mit der T EAC Niederlassung Kontakt auf.
2. Ihr Fachhändler teilt Ihnen Namen und Adresse der nächstgelegenen autorisierten Servicestation mit. Schicken Sie das Produkt oder die als defekt vermuteten Teile spesenfrei (Fracht- und V ersicherungskosten müssen von Ihnen bezahlt werden) an die Servicestation. Fügen Sie bitte eine Kopie des Kaufbelegs bei und füllen Sie die Garantiekarte vollständig aus (mit Angabe der Seriennummer des Geräts). TEAC behält sich v or , Garantieleistungen abzulehnen, falls Garantiekarte und Kaufnachweis nicht im Sinne der vorliegenden Bestimmungen vorgelegt werden. Falls die erforderlichen Reparaturen von den Gewährleistungsbestimmungen abgedeckt sind und das Produkt zur nächstgelegenen Servicestation geschickt wurde, werden die Kosten für Rückfracht und Versicherung freigemacht.
Bitte schicken Sie das Gerät nicht ohne unsere ausdrückliche Zustimmung direkt an TEAC (siehe auch Rücksendeformular).
Einschränkungen der Gewährleistung und Ausschluß implizierter Ansprüche
Soweit dies nicht dem jeweils gültigen national anwendbaren Recht widerspricht, sind folgende Ansprüche ausgeschlossen:

TEAC begrenzt seine Leistungspflicht aus der Gewährleistung ausschließlich auf Reparatur oder Ersatz nach freier Wahl von TEAC so wie der autorisierten Servicestellen, der autorisierten Facheinzelhändler und deren autorisierten Servicestellen. Weitergehende Ansprüche sind in vollem Umfang ausgeschlossen. TEAC übernimmt keine Haftung für Schäden an anderen Gegenständen realer oder virtueller Natur, insbesondere an Software und/oder Datenbeständen, die durch Defekte in TEAC Produkten verursacht wurden. W eiterhin sind alle Ansprüche aus Mangel an Benutzbarkeit, entgangenem Umsatz und/oder Gewinn sowie alle anderen impliziten und expliziten Haftungen ausdrücklich ausgeschlossen.
2.
Alle impliziten Gewährleistungsansprüche und V orbehalte, einschließlich solcher , aber nicht beschränkt auf diese , wie die Vermarktbarkeit und/oder die Gebrauchsfähigkeit für einen bestimmten Zweck, werden hiermit explizit ausgeschlossen.
Diese Garantiebestimmungen berühren das national festgelegte Verbraucherrecht nicht.
