Installing the earbuds
(for ICD-SX813 only)
If the earbuds do not fit your ears correctly, the noise canceling effect will not be optimal. To optimize noise canceling and to enjoy better sound quality, change the earbuds to another size, or adjust the earbud position to fit your ears comfortably and snugly. One pair of the M size earbuds is attached to the headphones when you purchase the IC recorder. If you feel the M size earbuds do not suit your ears, replace them with the supplied S or L size earbuds. Confirm the size of the earbuds by checking the color inside (S: Orange, M: Green, L: Light blue). When you replace the earbuds, turn to install them firmly on the stereo headphones for noise canceling to prevent the earbud from detaching and remaining in your ear.

* This is an approximation for the time it
takes to charge from no remaining battery
power to full battery power at room
temperature. It varies depending on the
remaining power and the condition of the
batteries. It also takes more time if the
temperature of the batteries are low, or if
the batteries are charged while you are
transferring data to the IC recorder.
P Note
If the battery indicator is not displayed in an animation, charging has not been done properly. See “Troubleshooting” on page 138.
When using fully charged batteries or LR03 (size AAA) alkaline batteries

Changing the Recording Settings

Switching the directionality of the built-in microphones

The built-in microphones are unidirectional. You can change the angle of the built-in microphones manually.
Rotating both capsules of the built-in microphones in the same direction (0° position)
You can record the sound directly in front of the built-in microphones. This is convenient when you want to record a sound source in a particular direction, such as a voice note, an interview, etc.
Rotating both capsules of the built-in microphones to face the outside (120° position)
The microphone on the right records sound from the right; the microphone on the left records sound from the left. You can thus obtain dynamic stereo sound recording, therefore this position is recommended for recording a sound source, such as a conference, a musical performance, etc.

For ICD-SX712/SX713/SX813, the operational tests performed were using memory cards available as of September 2010.
For the latest information about the memory cards that have been tested, please access the support home page for the IC recorder:
http://www.sony-asia.com/support
In this manual, M2™ and microSD cards are generally referred to as a “memory card.” The M2™/microSD card slot is referred to as the “memory card slot.” Due to the file system specifications of the IC recorder, you can record and play back an LPCM file smaller than 2 GB, and an MP3/LPEC/WMA/AAC-LC file smaller than 1 GB using a memory card.
You can record up to 4,074 files on an M2™ media.
P Note
Operations of all types of compatible memory cards are not guaranteed.

Using the Noise Canceling Function

(for ICD-SX813 only)

About noise canceling

The internal microphone embedded in the stereo headphones for noise canceling picks up ambient noise. The IC recorder generates an antiphase sound wave against this ambient noise to reduce it. The noise canceling function can reduce unwanted ambient noise, especially in a vehicle such as an airplane, train, bus, etc., allowing you to enjoy music at a low volume.
P Notes
• If the supplied stereo headphones for noise canceling are not used properly, the effect of the noise canceling function may be degraded. To make the most of the function, use the correct size earbuds to fit your ears and insert the stereo headphones for noise canceling into your ears snugly.
GB
72
• Rubbing noises may occur while wearing stereo headphones for noise canceling. It is not a malfunction.
• The noise canceling function mainly reduces ambient noise in the low frequency bands and has less effect on ambient noise in the higher frequency bands, such as speaking voices and ringing tones. It has no effect on certain sounds.
• Do not cover the microphone part of the stereo headphones for noise canceling with your hands, etc., otherwise the noise canceling function may not work.
Microphone
• You may hear a slight noise when the noise canceling function is active. This is operational noise of the noise canceling function and not a malfunction.
• You may feel the noise canceling function does not work or noise is louder in a quiet environment or certain noises may not be canceled as effectively as others. In this case, release the noise canceling function.
• Mobile phones may affect noise. In that case, keep the IC recorder away from mobile phones.
• Make sure to remove the stereo headphones for noise canceling from your ears before you connect or disconnect the stereo headphones from the headphone jack of the IC recorder. If the stereo headphones are connected or disconnected from the IC recorder during playback, or while the noise canceling function is active, noise may be generated. This is not a malfunction.
• When the noise canceling function is turned on or off, a switching sound will be generated. This sound is generated by the switch of the noise canceling circuit, and is not a malfunction.

for noise canceling to the i (headphone) jack.
