SAFETY CHECK-OUT
After correcting the original service problem, perform the following safety checks before releasing the set to the customer:
1. Check the area of your repair for unsoldered or poorly-soldered connections. Check the entire board surface for solder splashes and bridges.
2. Check the interboard wiring to ensure that no wires are pinched or contact high-wattage resistors.
3. Look for unauthorized replacement parts, particularly transistors, that were installed during a previous repair. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
4. Look for par ts which, though functioning, show obvious signs of deterioration. Point them out to the customer and recommend their replacement.
5. Check the line cord for cracks and abrasion. Recommend the replacement of any such line cord to the customer.
6. Check the B+ voltage to see it is at the values specified.
7. Check the antenna terminals, metal trim, “metallized” knobs, screws, and all other exposed metal parts for AC leakage. Check leakage as described below.
To Exposed Metal Parts on Set
LEAKAGE TEST
The AC leakage from any exposed metal part to earth ground and from all exposed metal parts to any exposed metal part having a return to chassis, must not exceed 0.5 mA (500 microamperes). Leakage current can be measured by any one of three methods.
1. A commercial leakage tester , such as the Simpson 229 or RCA
WT -540A. Follow the manuf acturers' instructions to use these
instruments.
2. A battery-operated AC milliammeter. T he Data Precision 245
digital multimeter is suitable for this job.
3. Measuring the voltage drop across a resistor by means of a
VOM or battery-operated AC voltmeter. The “limit” indica-
tion is 0.75V, so analog meters must have an accurate low-
voltage scale. The Simpson 250 and Sanwa SH-63T rd are ex-
amples of a passive VOM that is suitable. Nearly all battery
operated digital multimeters that have a 2V A C range are suit-
able. (See Fig. A)

For 2 speaker setups
When you connect o nly 2 front speaker s, TVS (TV Virtual Surround) lets yo u enjoy surround sound effects by using sou nd imaging to create virtual rea r speakers from the sound of the front speakers (L: left, R: right) without using actual rear speakers. Select one of the following mo des:
If the player is set up to output the signal from the DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL or COAXIAL) jack, the surround effect will be heard only when DOLBY DIGITAL and DTS are set to D-PCM in AUDIO SETUP(page 78).
56
TVS DYNAMIC
Uses sound imaging to create virtual rear speakers from the sound of the front speakers (L, R) without using actual rear speakers (shown below). The sound imaging effect is distinct an d clearly reproduces each aural element of the audio track. This mode is effective when the distance between the front L and R speakers is short, such as with built-in speakers on a s tereo TV.
TV
TVS WIDE
Uses sound imaging to create virtual rear speakers from the sound of the front speakers (L, R) without using actual rear speakers. The virtual speakers are reproduced as shown in the illustration below. This gives the sound an expanded effect that fills the area surrounding the listener. This mode is effective when the dista nce between the front L and R speakers is short, such as with built-in speakers on a stereo TV.
TV
TVS NIGHT
Large sounds, such as explosions, are compressed, but the quie ter sounds are unaffected. This featur e is useful when you dont want to disturb other people but still want to hear the dialog a nd enjoy the surround sound effects of TVS WIDE.
TVS STANDARD
Uses sound imaging to create virtual rear speakers from the sound of the front speakers (L, R) without using actual rear speakers. The virtual speakers are reproduced as shown in the illustration below. Use this setting when you want to use TVS with 2 separate speakers and retain the sound quality.
L : Front speaker (left) R : Front speaker (right)
LR

For 4 (or more) speaker setups
You can enjoy the following surround effects by using the 2 front speakers and 2 rear speakers. Connect the player to the amplifier (receiver)
B-1
with the connection (page 22). You can experience Dolby Surround (Pro Logic) sounds or Digital Cinema Sound (DCS). DCS uses sound imaging to shift the sound of the rear speakers a way from the actual speaker position or create entire sets of virtual rear speakers from one set of actual rear speakers. VIRTUAL REAR SHIFT,
VIRTUAL MULTI REAR, and VIRTUAL MULTI DIMENSION make
use of this technology.
NORMAL SURROUND
Software with 2 channel audio signals is decoded with the Dolby Surround (Pro Logic) decoder to create surround effects. The rear speakers will emit identical monaural sounds. If you are using a cen ter speaker, the appropriate sounds for the center speaker will be delivered.

ENHANCED SURROUND
Provides a greater sense of presence from a Dolby Surround (Pro Logic) source with a monaural rear channel signal. Produces a stereo like effect in the rear channels.

DVD VIDEO (page 6)
A disc that contains up to 8 hours of moving pictures even though its diameter is the same as a CD. The data capacity of a single-layer and single-sided DVD is 4.7 GB (Giga Byte), which is 7 times that of a CD. The data capacity of a double-layer and single-sided DVD is 8.5 GB, a single-layer and doublesided DVD is 9.4 GB, and double-layer and double-sided DVD is 17 GB. The picture data uses the MPEG 2 format, one of the worldwide standards of digital compression technology. The picture data is compressed to about 1/40 (average) of its original size. The DVD also uses a variable rate coding technology that changes the data to be allocated according to the status of the picture. Audio information is recorded in a multi-channel format, such as Dolby Digital, allowing you to enjoy a more real audio presence. Furthermore, various advanced functions such as the multi-angle, multilingual, and Parental Control functions are provided with the DVD.
