Precautions

! General

Please ensure that the equipment is posi tioned in a well venti-

lated area and that there is at least 10 cm (4") of free space along the sides and back. There must also be a mi nimum of 20 cm (8") of free space on the top of the unit.

Use the unit on a firm, level surface free from vibration.

Keep the unit away from direct sunl ight, strong magnetic fields,

excessive dust, humidity and electronic/electrical equipment (home computers, facsimiles, etc.) which generate electrical noise. Do not place anything on top of the unit.

Do not expose the unit to moisture, to temperatures higher than

60°C (140°F) or to extremely low temperatures. If your system does not work proper ly, disconnec t the AC power

lead from the wall socket. Plug the AC power lead back in, and then turn on your system. In case of an electrical storm, unplug the unit for safety.

Hold the AC power plug by the head when removing it from the

wall socket, as pulling the lead can damage internal wires.

Do not remove the outer cover, as this may result in electric

shock. Refer internal service to your local SHARP service facility.

The ventilation should not be impeded by covering the ventilation

openings with items, such as newspapers, tablecloths, curtains, etc. No naked flame sources, such as lighted candles, should be

placed on the apparatus. Attention should be drawn to the environmental aspects of bat-

tery disposal. The apparatus is designed for use in moderate climate.

This unit should only be used within the range of 5°C - 35°C

(41°F - 95°F).

Using this product with a higher voltage other than that which is specified is dangerous and may result in a fire or o ther type of accident causing damage. SHARP will not be held responsible for any damage resulting from use of this unit with a voltage other than that which is specified.

CD players use a laser pickup which can damage the eyes if

viewed directly. Do not look at the pickup, and do not touch the pickup directly.

! Volume control

The sound level at a given volume setting depends on speaker ef ficiency, location, and various other factors. It is advisable to avoid exposure to high volume levels. Do not turn the volume on to full at switch on and listen to music at moderate levels.

! Care of compact discs

Compact discs are fairly resistant t o damage, however mistracking can occur due to an accumulation of dirt on the disc surface. Follow the guidelines below for maximum enjoyment from your CD collection and player.

Do not write on either side of the disc, particularl y the non-label

side from which signals are read. Do not mark this surface. Keep your discs away from direct sunlight, heat, and exces sive

moisture. Always hold the CDs by the edges. Fingerprints, dirt, or water on

the CDs can cause noise or mistracking. If a CD is dirty or does not play properly, clean it with a soft, dry cloth, wiping straight out from the centre, along the radius.

Make sure to unplug the AC power lead before making any connections.

Supplied FM aerial:

Connect the FM aerial wire to the FM 75 OHMS socket and position the FM aerial wire in the direction where the strongest signal can be received.

Supplied AM loop aerial:

Connect the AM loop aerial to the LOOP socket. Position the AM loop aerial for optimum reception. Place the AM loop aerial on a shelf, etc., or attach it to a stand or a wall with screws (not supplied).

Connect the wire with the white line to the minus (-) terminal and the plain wire to the plus (+) terminal.

Caution:

Do not let the bare speaker wires touch each

other.

Use speakers with an impedance of 4 ohms or

more, as lower impedance speakers can damage the unit.

Do not mistake the right and the left channels.

The right speaker is the one on the right side when you face the unit.

Placing the speaker system:

The left and right speakers have i ndividual shapes. For best per formance, place the speakers according to the diagram below.

1 Remove the battery cover. 2 Insert the supplied batteries according to the direction indi-

cated in the battery compartment.

When inserting or removing the batteries, push them toward the

battery terminals.

3 Replace the cover.

Notes concerning use:

Replace the batteries if the operating distance is reduced or if the

operation becomes erratic. Purchase 2 "AAA" size batteries (UM4, R03, HP-16 or similar). Periodically clean the transmitter on the remote control and the

sensor on the unit with a soft cloth. Exposing the sensor on the unit to strong light may i nterfere with

operation. Change the lighting or the direction of the unit. Keep the remote control away from moisture, heat, shock, and

vibrations.

Setting the clock

This may be operated only with the remote control. In this example, the clock is set for the 24-hour (0:00) display.

Press the SHIFT button and then the CLOCK button. Withi n 5 seconds, press the SHIFT button and then the MEMORY

button.

Within 1 minute, press the PRESET ( or ) button to adjust the hour, then press the SHIFT but ton and then the MEMORY button.

Press the PRESET ( or ) button once to advance the time by 1 hour. Hold it down to advance continuously.

Within 1 minute, press the PRESET ( or ) button to adjust the minutes, then press the SHIFT button and then the MEMORY button.

Press the PRESET ( or ) button once to advance the time by 1 minute. Hold it down to advance continuously.

To confirm the time display:

Press the SHIFT button and then the CLOCK button. The time display will appear for about 5 seconds.

Note:

The "0:00" or time will flash when the AC power supply is restored after a power failure or unplugging the unit. Readjust the clock as follows.

To readjust the clock:

Perform "Setting the clock" from the begi nning. If the "0:00" is not flashing in step 1, step 2 (for selecting the 24-hour or 12-hour display) will be skipped.

To change the 24-hour or 12-hour display:

1 Clear all the programmed contents. [Refer to "Clearing all the

memory (reset)" on page 31 for details.]

CD or MP3/WMA disc playback

This system can play back a standard CD, CD-R/RW in the CD format and CD-R/RW with MP3 or WMA files, but cannot record o n them. Some audio CD-R and CD-RW discs may not be playable due to the state of the disc or the equipment used for recording.

MP3:

MP3 is a form of compression. It is an acronym which stands for MPEG Audio Layer 3. MP3 is a type of audio code which is pr ocessed by signific ant compression from the original audio source with very little loss in sound quality.

The MP3 track indicator will light up when an MP3 track is read.

This system supports MPEG 1 Layer 3, MPEG 2 Layer 3, and

VBR files. During VBR file playback, time counter in the displ ay may differ

from its actual playback time.

WMA:

WMA files are ASF (Advanced Systems Format) audio files which are compressed with Windows Media Audio codec. WMA i s developed by Microsoft as an audio format file for Windows Media Player.

The WMA track indicator will light up when a WMA track is read.

Supported bit rates for WMA files range from 64 kbps to 160

kbps.

Caution:

Do not play discs with special shapes (heart or octagon s haped)

as it may cause malfunctions. If a disc is damaged, dir ty, or loaded upside down, "NO DISC"

will appear on the display. Keep foreign objects out of the disc compartment.

Subjecting the unit to shock or vibration may cause mistracking.

When the unit is not being used, be sure to close the disc com-

partment. If it is left open, the le ns may be covered with dust and the unit may not operate properly. If TV or radio interference occurs during disc operation, move the

unit away from it.

" Headphones

Before plugging in or unplugging the headphones, reduce the

volume. Be sure your headphones have a 3. 5 mm (1/8") diameter plug

and impedance between 16 and 50 ohms. The recommended impedance is 32 ohms. Plugging in the headphones disconnects the speakers automati-

cally. Adjust the volume using the VOLUME control.

" Direct search of the track

By using the direct search buttons, the desired tracks can be played.

Whilst in the stop mode, use the direct search buttons on the remote control to select the desired track.

The direct search buttons allow you to select up to number 9.

When selecting number 10 or higher, use the "+10" button.

A. For example, to choose 13

1 Press the "+10" button once. 2 Press the "3" button.

B. For example, to choose 30

1 Press the "+10" button three times. 2 Press the "0" button.

Press the ( ) button to start playback.

Playback of the selected track is started. When the last track on the disc has finished playing, the unit will stop automatically.

To stop playback:

Notes:

The selected track can be st arted simply by pressing the dir ect

search buttons during playback. [It is not necessary t o press the

A track number higher than the number of tracks on the disc can-

not be selected. During random play, direct search is not possible.

For CD-R/RW discs recorded in the MP3 or WMA format, you

can select the track number but cannot select the folder by pressing the direct search buttons.

(You cannot select the order of the tracks.) If you press the button during random play, you can move to

the next track by the random operation. On the other hand, the

button does not allow you to move to the prev ious tr ack. The

beginning of the track being p layed will be located.

Caution:

After performing repeat play, be sure to press the button. Otherwise, the disc will play continuously.

To cancel repeat or random play:

Press the SHIFT button and then the RANDOM/REPEAT button. Repeat this to select the normal playback mode.

If you make a mistake, the programmed tracks can be cleared by pressing the SHIFT button and then the CLEAR button.

To clear the programmed selections:

Whilst the "MEMORY" indicator is lit, set the CD to the stop mode, then press the SHIFT button and then the CLEAR button. Each time the button is pressed, one track will be cleared, beginning with the last track programmed. When all the tracks are cleared, "MEMORY" will disappear.

Notes:

Opening the disc compartment automatically cancels the pro-

grammed sequence. If you press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the stand-by

mode or change the function from CD to another, the programmed selections w ill no t be cle ar ed. During the programme operation, random play is not possible.

For CD-R/RW discs recorded in the MP3 or WMA format, you

can select the track number but cannot select the folder by pressing the direct search buttons.

Listening to the radio

Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.

Press the FUNCTION button until "FM" or "AM" appears on the display.

When operating with the remote control, press the TUNER (BAND) button to select "FM" or "AM".

Press the TUNING ( or ) button to tune in to the desired station.

Manual tuning:

Press the TUNING button as many times as required to tune in to the desired station.

Auto tuning:

When the TUNING button is pressed for more than 0.5 seconds, scanning will start automatically and the tuner will stop at the first receivable broadcast station.

Notes:

When radio interference occurs, auto scan tuning may stop auto-

matically at that point. Auto scan tuning will skip w e a k si gn al stat io n s .

To stop the auto tuning, press the TUNING button again.

When an RDS (Radio Data System) station is tuned in, the fre-

quency will be displayed first, and then the RDS indicator will light. Finally, the station name will appear. Full auto tuning can be achieved for RDS stations "ASPM", see

page 21.

To receive an FM stereo transmission:

Press the FUNCTION [TUNER ( BAND)] button to display t he "ST" indicator.

" " will appear when an FM broadcast is in stereo.

If the FM reception is weak, press the FUNCTION [TUNER

(BAND)] button to extinguish the "ST" indicator. The reception changes to monaural, and the sound becomes clearer.

Listening to the memorised station

" Memorising a station

You can store 40 AM and FM stations in memory and recall them at the push of a button. (Preset tuning)

Perform steps 1 - 3 in "Listening to the radio" on page 17.

Press the MEMORY/SET button to enter the preset tuning saving

mode.

Within 5 seconds, press the PRESET ( or ) button to select the

preset channel number.

Store the stations in memory, in order, starting with preset channel 1.

Within 5 seconds, press the MEMORY/SET button to store that sta-

tion in memory.

If the "MEMORY" and preset number indicators go out before the station is memorised, repeat the operation from step 2.

Repeat steps 1 - 4 to set other stations, or to change a preset station.

When a new station is stored in memory, the station previously memorised will be erased .

Notes:

On the remote control, press the SHIFT button and then the

MEMORY button in step 2 and 4. The backup function protects the memorised stations f or a few

hours should there be a power failure or the A C power lead disconnection.

" To recall a memorised station

Press the PRESET ( or ) button for less than 0. 5 seconds to select the desired station.

To select a preset station with the direct number buttons:

Press the corresponding number ("0" - "+10").

Example:

To select 28, press "+10", "+10" and "8".

Using the Radio Data System (RDS)

RDS is a broadcasting service which a growing number of FM stations provide. These FM stations send additional signals along with their regular programme signals. They send their station names, and information about the type of prog ramme such as sport, music, etc.

When tuned to an RDS station, "RDS" and the station name will be displayed. "TP" (Traffic Programme) will appear on the display when the received broadcast carries traffic information, and "TA" (Traffic Announcement) will appear whilst a traffic information is on air.

You can control the RDS by using the remote control only.

Press the SHIFT button and then the DISPLAY button. The display changes as follows each time they are pressed.

NEWS Short accounts of facts, events and publicly ex-

pressed views, reportage and actuality.

AFFAIRS Topical programme expanding or enlarging upon

the news, generally in different presentation style or concept, including debate, or analysis.

INFO Programmes whose purpose is to impart advice in

the widest sense.

SPORT Programme concerned with any aspect of sport. EDUCATE Programme intended primarily to educate, of which

the formal element is fundamental.

DRAMA All radio plays and serials. CULTURE Programmes concerned with any aspect of national

or regional culture, including language, theatre, etc.

SCIENCE Programmes about the natural sciences and tech-

nology.

VARIED Used for mainly speech-based programmes usually

of light-entertainment nature, not covered by other categories. Examples include: quizzes, panel games, personality interviews.

POP M Commercial music, which would generally be con-

sidered to be of current popular appeal, often featuring in current or recent record sales charts.

ROCK M Contemporary modern music, usually written and

performed by young musicians.

EASY M Current contemporary music considered to be

"easy-listening", as opposed to Pop, Rock or Classical, or one of the specialised music styles, Jazz, Folk or Country. Music in this category is often but not always, vocal, and usually of short duration.

LIGHT M Classical music for general, rather than specialist

appreciation. Examples of music in this category are instrumental music, and vocal or choral works.

CLASSICS Performances of major orchestral works, sympho-

nies, chamber music, etc., and including Grand Opera.

OTHER M Musical styles not fitting into any of the other cate-

gories. Particularly used for specialist music of which Rhythm & Blues and Reggae are examples.

WEATHER Weather reports and forecasts and meteorological

information.

FINANCE Stock Market reports, commerce, trading, etc. CHILDREN For programmes targeted at a young audience, pri-

marily for entertainment and interest, rather than where the objective is to educate.

SOCIAL Programmes about people and things that influence

them individually or in groups. Includes: sociology, history, geography, psychology and society.

RELIGION Any aspect of beliefs and faiths, involving a God or

Gods, the nature of existence and ethics.

PHONE IN Involving members of the public expressing their

views either by phone or at a public forum.

TRAVEL Features and programmes concerned with travel to

near and far destinations, package tours and travel ideas and opportunities. Not for use for announcements about problems, delays, or roadworks affecting immediate travel where TP/TA should be used.

LEISURE Programmes concerned with recreational activities

in which the listener might participate. Examples include, Gardening, Fishing, Antique collecting, Cooking, Food & Wine, etc.

JAZZ Polyphonic, syncopated music characterised by im-

tradition of the American Southern States. Characterised by a straightforward melody and narrative story line.

NATION M Current Popular Music of the Nation or Region in

that country's language, as opposed to International 'Pop' which is usually US or UK inspired and in English.

OLDIES Music from the so-called "golden age" of popular

music.

FOLK M Music which has its roots in the musical culture of a

particular nation, usually played on acoustic instruments. The narrative or story may be based on historical events or people.

DOCUMENT Programme concerned with factual matters, pre-

sented in an investigative style.

TEST Broadcast when testing emergency broadcast

equipment or receivers.

ALARM Emergency announcement made under exception-

al circumstances to give warning of events causing danger of a general nature.

TP Broadcasts which carry traffic announcements. TA Traffic announcements are being broadcast.

! Using the Auto Station Programme Memory

(ASPM)

Whilst in the ASPM operation mode, the tuner will automatically search for new RDS stations. Up to 40 stations can be stored. If you have already stored some s tations in me mory, the number of new stations you can store w ill b e les s .

Press the TUNER (BAND) button to select the FM band.

Press the SHIFT button, and then hold down the ASPM button for at least 3 seconds.

1 After "ASPM" has flashed for about 4 seconds, scanning will

start (87.50 - 108.00 MHz).

2 When an RDS station is found, "RDS" will appear first, and

then "MEMORY" and the preset channel number will flash for 2 seconds. Finally the station will be stored in memory.

3 After scanning, the number of stations stored in memory will

be displayed for 4 seconds, and then "END" will appear for 4 seconds.

To stop the ASPM operation before it is complete:

Press the SHIFT button and then the ASPM button whilst scanning. The stations which are already stored in memory will be kept there.

Notes:

If the same station is broadcasting on different f requencies, the

strongest frequency will be stored in memory. Any station which has the same frequency as one stored in mem-

ory will not be stored. If 40 stations have already been stored in memory, the scan will

be aborted. If you want to redo the ASPM operation, erase the preset memory. If no stations have been stored in memory, "END" will appear for

about 4 seconds. If the RDS signals are very weak, station names may not be

stored in memory.

To erase one of the contents of preset memory:

1 Press the PRESET ( or ) button to select the preset channel

number you want to erase. 2 Press the SHIFT button and then the MEMORY button. 3 Within 5 seconds, press the SHIFT button and then the CLEAR

button.

To erase all of the contents of preset memory:

1 Press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the power stand-by

mode. 2 Whilst pressing down the FUNCTION button and the button,

press the ON/STAND-BY button until "TUCL" appears.

After performing this operation, all of the preset memory informa-

tion will be erased.

To store a station name again if the wrong name was stored in memory:

It may be impossible to store st ation names in memory using the ASPM function if there is lots of noise or if the signal is too weak. In this case, perform a s fo llows.

1 Press the PRESET ( or ) button to check whether the names

are correct.

2 If you find a wrong name during receiving the station, wait until the

correct name will be displayed. Press the SHIFT button and then the MEMORY button.

3 Within 5 seconds, press the SHIFT button and then the MEMORY

button whilst the preset channel number is flashing. The new station name has been stored in memory correctly.

Notes:

The same station name can be stored in different channels.

In a certain area or during certain time periods, the station names

may temporarily be different.

! Notes for RDS operation

If any of the following events occur, it does not mean that the unit is faulty:

"PS", "NO PS" and a station name appear alternately, and the

unit does not operate properly. If a particular station is not broadcasting prop erly or a station is

conducting tests, the RDS reception function may not work properly. When you receive an RDS station whose signal is too weak,

information like the station name may not be displayed. "NO PS" or "NO PTY" will flash for about 5 seconds, and then the

frequency will be displayed.

! To recall stations in memory

To specify programme types and select stations (PTY search):

You can search a station by specifying the programme type (news,

sports, traffic programme, etc. ... s ee pages 20 - 21) from the sta-

tions in memory.

Press the TUNER (BAND) button to select the FM.

Press the SHIFT button and press the PTY.TI button.

"PTY TI" will flash for about 6 seconds.

Within 6 seconds, press the PRESET ( or ) button to select the programme type.

Each time the button is pressed, the programme type will appear. If the button is held down for more than 0.5 seconds, the programme type will appear continuously.

Whilst the selected programme type is flashing (within 4 seconds), press the SHIFT button and then the PTY.TI button.

Notes:

If the display has stopped flashing, start agai n from st ep 2 . If t he

unit finds a desired programme type, the correspond ing channel number will flash for about 4 seconds, and then the station name will flash for 7 seconds, which will remain lit. If you want to listen to another station of the same programme

type, press the SHIFT button and then the PTY.TI butt on whilst the channel number or station name is flashing. The unit will look for the next station. If no station can be found, "NOTFOUND" will appear for 4 sec-

onds.

If you select the traffic programme:

If you select the traffic programme (TP) in step 3, "TP" will appear. (This does not mean that you can listen to the t raffic information at that time.) When the traffic information is broadcast, "TA" will appear.

To specify station names and select stations manually:

You can select a station by specifying the name (BBC R1, BBC R2, etc.) from the stations stored in memory. Before starting this operation, you must store one or more station names in memory.

Listening to a cassette tape

Before playback:

For playback, use normal or low-noise tapes for

the best sound. (Metal or CrO tapes are not recommended.)

Do not use C-120 tapes or poor-quality tapes, as they

may cause malfunctions. Before loading a tape into the cassette compartment,

tighten the slack with a pen or a pencil.

Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.

Press the FUNCTION button until "TAPE" appears on the display.

When operating with the remote control, press the TAPE button.

Open the cassette compartment by pushing the area marked "PUSH EJECT ".

Load a cassette into the cassette compartment with the side to be played facing toward you.

Close the cassette compartment by pushing the area marked "PUSH EJECT ".

Press the ( ) button to start playback.

To stop playback:

Press the button.

Fast forward/rewind:

To advance the tape, press the button. To rewind it, press the

button.

Caution:

To remove the cassette, press the button, and then open t he

compartment. Before changing from one tape operation t o another, press the

button. If a power failure occurs during tape operation, the tape head will

remain engaged with the tape an d the cassette compartment will not open. In this case, wait until the power is restored. Even if the ( ) button is pressed during tape playback, the unit

will not enter the pause mode.

Recording on a cassette tape

Before recording:

When recording important selections, make a preliminary test to

ensure that the desired material is properly recorded. SHARP is not liable for damage or loss of your recordi ng arising

from malfunction of this unit. The volume and sound controls can be adjusted with no effect on

the recorded signal (Variable Sound Monitor).

For recording, use only normal tapes. Do not use metal or

CrO tapes.

Do not use C-120 tapes or poor-quality tapes, as they may cause

malfunctions.

Erase-prevention tab of cassette tapes:

When recording on a cassette tape,

make sure that the erase-prevention tabs are not removed. Cassettes have removable tabs that prevent accidental recording or erasing.

To protect the recorded sound, re-

move the tab after recording. Cover the tab hole with adhesive tape to record on the tape without the tab.

Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.

Press the FUNCTION button until "CD DISC" appears on the display.

Load the desired disc.

the AM loop aerial. If you use the remote control, make s ure to press the SHIFT but-

ton prior to pressing the button.

! Erasing recorded tapes

1 Load the tape to be erased into the cassette compartment with

the side to be erased facing toward you.

2 Press the FUNCTION button until "TAPE" appears on the dis-

play.

When operating with the remote control, press the TAPE button. 3 Press the button. 4 Press the ( ) button to start erasing.

Timer and sleep operation

This may be operated only with the remote control.

Timer playback:

The unit turns on and plays the desired source (disc, tuner, tape) at a preset time.

Sleep operation:

The radio, disc or cassette tape can be turned off automatically.

Before setting timer:

1 Check that the clock is set to the correct time (refer to page 10). 2 Load a cassette or disc to be played.

! Timer playback

Press the ON/STAND-BY button to turn the power on.

Press the CD, TUNER (BAND) or TAPE button to select the desired function.

When you selected the TUNER (BAND), tune in to the desired station.

Adjust the volume using the VOLUME buttons.

Do not turn the volume up too high.

Press the SHIFT button and then the TIMER button. Within 6 seconds, press the SHIFT button and then the MEMORY button.

Within 1 minute, press the PRESET ( or ) button to specify the hour to start, then press the SHIFT button and

then the MEMORY button.

Within 1 minute, press the PRESET ( or ) button to specify the minutes to start, then press the SHIFT button

and then the MEMORY button.

The timer playback starting time, function, and volume will be

displayed, and then the unit will enter the stand-by mode automatically.

When the preset time is reached, playback will start.

The volume will increase gradually until it reaches the volume you were listening at before your system enters the timer standby mode.

The unit will enter the stand-by mode one hour after the timer playback starts. However, when disc or tape playback time is one hour or less, it will enter the stand-by mode after completing playback.

To reset or change the timer setting:

Perform "Timer playback" from the beginning.

Note:

When performing timer playback usi ng another unit connected to the VIDEO/AUX sockets, select "VIDEO/AUX" in step 2. At this time, only this unit will be turned on or enter the power s tand-by mode automatically. It will enter the power stand-by mode 1 hour after the timer playback starts. However, the other unit will not be turned on or off.

! Sleep operation

Play back the desired sound source.

Press the SHIFT button and then the SLEEP button.

To change the sleep time:

Time decreases as follows each time they are pressed. The amount of sleep time can also be changed whilst in the

sleep mode.

To confirm the remaining sleep time:

Press the SHIFT button and then the SLEEP button once whilst the sleep timer is set. The remaining sleep time is displayed for about 3 seconds.

! If trouble occurs

When this product is subjected to strong external interference (mechanical shock, excessive static electricity, abnormal supply voltage due to lightning, etc.) or if it is oper ated incorrectly, it may malfunction.

If such a problem occurs, do the following:

1 Set the unit to the stand-by mode and turn the power on again. 2 If the unit is not restored in the previous operation, unplug and

plug in the unit, and then turn the power on.

Note:

If neither operation above restores t he unit, cl ear al l the memory by resetting it.

! Clearing all the memory (reset)

1 Press the ON/STAND-BY button to enter the power stand-by

mode.

2 Whilst pressing down the MEMORY/SET button and the PRE-

SET button, press the ON/STAND-BY button until "CL" appears.

Caution:

This operation will erase all data stored in memory including clock, timer settings, tuner preset, and CD programme.

! Condensation

Sudden temperature changes, storage or operation i n an ext remely humid environment may cause condensation inside the cabinet (CD pickup, tape heads, etc.) or on the transmitter on the remote control. Condensation can cause the unit to malfunction. If this happens, leave the power on with no disc (or casset te) in t he uni t until normal playback is possible (about 1 hour). Wipe off any condensation on the transmitter with a soft cloth before operating the unit.

Maintenance

! Cleaning the CD pickup lens

Do not touch the laser pickup lens. If fingerprints or dust accumulate on the pickup, clean it gently with a dry cotton swab.

! Cleaning the cabinet

Periodically wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth and a diluted s oap solution, then with a dry cloth.

Caution:

Do not use chemicals for cleaning (petrol, paint thinner, etc.) . It

may damage the cabinet finish. Do not apply oil to the ins ide of the unit. It may cause m alfunc-

tions.

! Cleaning the tape-handling parts

Dirty heads, capstan or pi nch roller can cause poor sound and

tape jams. Clean these parts with a cotton swab mois tened with commercial head/pinch roller cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. When cleaning the heads, pinch roller, etc., unplug the unit which

contains high voltages.

Erase head

After long use, the deck's heads and capstan ma y become mag-

netised, causing poor sound. Demagnetise these parts once every 30 hours of pla ying/recording time by u sing a commercial tape head demagnetiser. Read the demagnetiser's inst ructions carefully before use.
