When using the VS-2480/2480CD, you need to select the display that you want to use as the graphical user interface. If you are controlling the parameters using the built-in LCD (liquid crystal display), the VGA display will be display-only. If you want to use the external VGA display to control the parameters, you must switch the graphical user interface to VGA.

To use the VGA display for control

1. Press [UTILITY].
2. Press the PAGE 1 tab [F1 (SYSTEM)].
3. Press [F2 (Param2)].
4. Move the cursor to “OPERATION TARGET,”
and turn the VALUE dial to select “VGA.” Now you can control the parameters using the VGA display.

To use the internal LCD for control

1. In the upper part of the VGA display, click “UTILITY.”
2. Click “SYSTEM PARAMETER.” The system parameter screen will appear.
3. Click “F2 (Param2).”
4. Click the “OPERATION TARGET” parameter “LCD.” Now you can
control the parameters using the LCD.

To instantly switch the controlling display

Here's how you can instantly switch control between the two displays:
• Hold down [SHIFT] and press [UTILITY]. If you press these two buttons when the LCD is the controlling display, the controlling display is changed to VGA. Simply repeat the procedure to return control to the LCD.
Hereafter, operations such as pressing [UTILITY] while you hold down [SHIFT] will be shown simply as [SHIFT] + [UTILITY].

Adjusting the volume of a phrase (Phrase Parameter)

The volume of a recorded phrase can be adjusted after it has been recorded. The Phrase Parameter function lets you fade-in or fade-out individual phrases.

To fade-in a phrase

Here's how to use Phrase Parameter to fade-in a phrase.
1. On the VS-2480/2480CD, press [TRACK] to access the Track Edit
menu. Press [F6 (RegPh)] (or [REGION/PHRASE]) so it lights in green. Press PAGE 3 [F1 (PARAM)]. In the VGA screen, click “TRACK” in the menu to select “PHRASE PARAMETER.” The Phrase Parameter screen will appear.
2. Select the phrase that you want to fade-in.
3. Press (click) [F1 (PARAM)]. Now you can edit the following
parameters.
• PHRASE LEVEL
The level that will be reached when the fade-in is complete. Alternatively, the level from which the fade-out will begin.
• FADE IN TIME, FADE OUT TIME
The time over which the fade-in and fade-out will occur.
• FADE IN CURVE, FADE OUT CURVE
Select the curve by which the fade-in or fade-out will change the volume. “Linear” will change the phrase volume in a straight line. “Exp” will change the volume exponentially. This will produce a subjective impression of linear change.
Volume change for playback from the middle of the phrase
If a phrase whose volume is controlled by the phrase parameters is played back from the middle of the phrase, the volume will change in a different way than specified by the FADE IN TIME parameter. If you locate to a time location within the phrase, processing will occur as follows.
Example) With FADE IN TIME=10.00 sec., locate to a location 3 seconds from the beginning, and then play back.
PLAY PLAY
Normally, fade-in would set the level to minus infinity at the
Phrase Level
beginning of the phrase, and the PHRASE LEVEL would be reached at a point 10 seconds from the beginning of the phrase. However, if you play back from a point 3 seconds after the beginning of the phrase, the level will change in 7 seconds from minus infinity to the PHRASE LEVEL. This same change will also occur for fade-out.

Regarding FADE IN TIME and FADE OUT TIME and the length of the phrase
If the time occupied by the fade-in and fade-out is longer than the length of the phrase, the FADE OUT TIME setting will be given priority for processing.
Example 1) When the fade time (FADE IN TIME + FADE OUT TIME) is longer than the phrase
If the phrase is 5 seconds long, and FADE IN TIME and FADE OUT TIME are both 3.00 seconds, FADE OUT TIME will take priority (the FADE IN TIME setting will be ignored).

Capture Audio data from Audio CD (CD Capture)

VS-2480 and VS-2480CD have function to capture Audio data from Audio CDs.
If you are using a VS-2480 that is not equipped with an internal CD-RW
drive, you will need to purchase a separately available CD-RW drive. For instructions on connecting the drive, refer to “Connecting the CD-R/RW Drive” (User Guide p. 81).
PX-4220Te, PX-8220Te, PX-W124TSe, and PX-W1210TSE manufactured by PLEXTOR is supported. In case you are using other drives approved by Roland, consult with your retailer, the nearest Roland Service Center, or an authorized Roland distributor.
1. Load an Audio CD or CD-R/RW disc that contains audio you like to
capture on CD-RW drive.
fig.07-07-jj
2. Press [CD-RW MASTERING].
CD-RW Mastering Menu will appear, then press PAGE 2 [F1 (CDCapt)]. In the VGA screen, click “CD-RW MASTERING” in the menu to select “CD CAPTURE.” CD CAPTURE screen will appear.
3. Press [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] or use the

Audio can be captured only if the current project has a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz.
If you are
using a VS-2480 without an internal CD-RW drive, you will need a separately sold CD-RW drive (Roland CD Recorder).
In the following cases, you must specify a stereo pair as the capture-destination tracks. If the destination is not a stereo pair, the display will indicate “Illegal Track Pair!,” and the capture operation will not be carried out.
• If the current project has a recording mode of “CD-R”
• If a CD-R mode phrase has been recorded in the capture-destination track.
• CAPTURE TO

• to Last Phrs:2S: Place the audio data two seconds after the end of the last phrase in the destination tracks.
• to Last Phrs:4S: Place the audio data four seconds after the end of the last phrase in the destination tracks.
If the track you select for “L-Ch DESTINATION TRACK” is a track in which a CD-R mode phrase has been recorded, turning the TIME/VALUE dial will not change “R-Ch DESTINATION TRACK.”

Copyright
• Unauthorized recording, distribution, sale, lending, public performance, broadcasting, or the like, in whole or in part, of a work (musical composition, video, broadcast, public performance, or the like) whose copyright is held by a third party is prohibited by law.
•When exchanging audio signals through a digital connection with an external instrument, this unit can perform recording without being subject to the restrictions of the Serial Copy Management System (SCMS). This is because the unit is intended solely for musical production, and is designed not to be subject to restrictions as long as it is used to record works (such as your own compositions) that do not infringe on the copyrights of others. (SCMS is a feature that prohibits second-generation and later copying through a digital connection. It is built into MD recorders and other consumer digital-audio equipment as a copyrightprotection feature.)
• Do not use this unit for purposes that could infringe on a copyright held by a third party. Roland assumes no responsibility whatsoever with regard to any infringements of third-party copyrights arising through your use of this unit.
About the License Agreement
• The VS-2480 and its CD-R capability are designed to allow you to reproduce material to which you have copyright, or material which the copyright owner has granted you permission to copy. Accordingly, reproduction of Music CD or other copyrighted material without permission of the copyright owner avoiding technical prohibiting features of second-generation and later copying like SCMS or others constitutes copyright infringement and may incur penalties even in case such reproduction is for your own personal use and enjoyment (private use).
