1.1 3030.3059.32-03.00
Applications UMS100 / UMS120

1.1 Applications

The UMS100/120 monitoring system is the ideal solution for the effective and budget-priced monitoring of electromagnetic emissions. The system is of compact design and can easily be installed and put into operation. The UMS100 and UMS120 systems have identical basic functionality.
Used in conjunction with the ARGUS or ARGUS-UMS control, measurement and analysis software, the UMS100/120 becomes a highly versatile and flexible monitoring system capable of handling a wide variety of tasks.
Typical applications:
Radiomonitoring of large areas with an appropriate number of UMS stations (e.g. national borders, coastlines, harbors, military training areas, large industrial areas, etc.)
Detection of new (illegal) signals that may impair sensitive communications and radiolocation systems (e.g. around airports)
Monitoring of licensed transmitter systems for compliance with operating parameters (even in the immediate vicinity of transmitters)
Monitoring of rooms and buildings to detect the use of illegal transmitters (e.g. airports, hospitals)
Mobile search for new signals and monitoring of existing signals with the UMS integrated in vehicles

UMS100 / UMS120 Design and Functional Principle

1.2 Design and Functional Principle

1.2.1 Design of the UMS

The UMS100/120 essentially consists of the monitoring unit, which is accommodated in a closed box. The UMS100 comes as standard with a preassembled, external protective cabinet. For the UMS120, this cabinet is available as an option. The cabinet provides additional protection against environmental effects, such as direct sunlight or adverse weather conditions, and against mechanical impact.
Otherwise, the UMS100 and UMS120 systems mainly differ with respect to the product equipment and accessories supplied with the units (see section 1.4 from page 1.6), and the larger variety of antennas that can be connected to the UMS120. Whereas the UMS100 comes with all components necessary for system installation and operation (protective cabinet, center mast and tripod, connecting cables and antenna), the UMS120 comes as the monitoring unit alone accommodated in the inner box. All components supplied with the UMS100 can also be ordered for the UMS120 as options or accessories. While offering the same functionality as the UMS100, the UMS120 can thus be configured to provide higher versatility.
Fig. 1-3: UMS120 with GSM option and front door open
A lockable door on the front of the box provides access to the fuses, the PRESET key and the SIM card slot for the GSM module (standard with UMS100, optional with UMS120).
The sockets for connecting external components are provided on the bottom. These include sockets for two receiving antennas, one communications antenna, an Ethernet LAN, DC and AC power supply input, protective ground and DC output. The DC output socket allows the connection of an optional DC feed (R&S
1.3 3030.3059.32-03.00
®
UMS12-H6) for the supply of active antennas (UMS120 only).
Design and Functional Principle UMS100 / UMS120

1.2.2 Functional Principle of the UMS

The main components of the UMS100G / UMS120 monitoring unit are the receiving section (RF frontend) with a signal preprocessing unit and a processor module with an embedded operating system. The RF frontend, which is provided with two antenna inputs, processes the received signals, demodulates them if necessary, and routes them on to the processor module.
The processor module is equipped with the required interfaces and a microprocessor. The firmware that runs on the microprocessor allows the UMS100/120 to be remote-controlled from an external PC on which ARGUS software must be installed. The ARGUS-UMS software has been specially adapted to match the functionality and applications of the UMS100/120 monitoring system. The ARGUS software also provides full functionality to control UMS100/120 units in conjunction with other Rohde & Schwarz measurement stations.
A data link to the UMS100/120 can be established via the integrated Ethernet LAN interface or via a wireless communications interface. The UMS100 is equipped with a GSM900/1800 module as standard. For the UMS120, wireless communications modules for different standards (GSM, CDMA) are optionally available ex factory.
The UMS100/120 features a universal power supply concept that allows the system to operate on AC (100 V AC to 240 V AC, 50 Hz to 60 Hz) as well as DC supply voltages (10 V DC to 30 V DC). AC and DC power supply can be connected simultaneously, enabling uninterrupted system operation in the event of a failure of the primary supply.
Special emphasis was placed on minimum power consumption. For ambient temperatures above 0 °C, power consumption is as low as approx. 25 W. Additional power is needed only at very low temperatures for heating the system.

UMS100 / UMS120 Specifications

1.2.3 Functional Principle of Built-In Heating

The UMS100/120 features a built-in heating that allows operation of the unit at outside temperatures that would pose a problem to conventional equipment. The heating extends the maximum lower temperature range to a limit of 40 °C. The built-in heating compensates for a drop of the outside temperature during operation, so that the UMS100/120 modules will continue to operate.
However, if the system is switched on at temperatures below 0 °C, the UMS100/120 must be allowed to warm up before its circuitry can start operating. Depending on the ambient temperature and the temperature inside the UMS, warm-up may take up to two hours. At an internal temperature between 0 °C and approx. 15 °C, the heating continues running, even though the internal circuitry is already operating. You should bear this in mind when you switch on the UMS100/120 while its internal temperature is within this range. Operation of the UMS100/120 with the heating switched on causes a short-term rise in current consumption until the internal temperature exceeds the threshold temperature at which the heating switches off.

1.2.4 Overtemperature Protection

The internal circuitry is protected against high temperature inside the UMS100/120. The modules are switched off when the internal temperature reaches approx. 75 °C. If the temperature drops below 70 °C, the modules are switched on again.

1.3 Specifications

For the current specifications of the UMS100 and UMS120 monitoring systems, see the respective data sheets.

Selecting an Appropriate Site UMS100 / UMS120

2.3 Selecting an Appropriate Site

NOTE:
Set up the system at as high a location as possible. Make sure that it is free from shadowing in the direction of reception.
Make sure that the tripod is mounted in a stable position. Anchor it in the ground or substructure.
In countries with high ambient temperatures, provide suitable means to protect the system against direct sunlight.
Make sure that there are no metal objects in the immediate vicinity of the system.
Do not set up the system in the vicinity of transmitters, e.g. broadcast or mobile radio transmitters (risk of interference caused by intermodulation products).
DANGER:
Make sure to maintain sufficient distance to live components, e.g. open-wire lines.
Observe local regulations pertaining to the mounting and installation of equipment and antennas.

UMS100 / UMS120 Assembly and Installation

2.4 Assembly and Installation

2.4.1 Center Mast and Tripod

The center mast and tripod support the monitoring unit and an antenna, or two antennas when a extension arm is used. The mast can be anchored to the ground by means of base elements (see detail on the left in Fig. 2-2). It is thus ensured that the monitoring system is installed in a stable position.

Assembly and Installation UMS100 / UMS120
The three shorter angle bars are the base elements. The detail on the left in Fig. 2-2 shows the location of the hole for anchoring the center mast and tripod.
The longer angle bars form the tripod that supports and reinforces the center mast. The details in Fig. 2-2 show their position and how they are mounted.
Mount the angle bars and the center mast as shown in the drawing. Make sure that all screws are firmly tightened. If necessary, secure the screws by appropriate means (e.g. locking varnish) to prevent them from loosening inadvertently.
Below are the dimensions with the center mast and tripod assembled and mounted. Note that these are approximate values only. The actual dimensions depend on the setup in each case.
Height of mast and tripod: 1700 mm
Diameter of center mast: 48.3 mm
Diameter of base elements: 1100 mm
Hole circle diameter of base elements: 1080 mm
