Overview

The Gas Mixing Module is a standalone unit that contains a mechanism to mix three separate input gases into one controlled output gas flow to be used in PerkinElmer instrumentation. Separate software controls the module. This software has no interaction with the instrumentation, Pyris, or any other software on the PC.
The user identifies the attached gas line for each port then selects a specific mixture of gases for continuous use with manual adjus tment.

This chapter describes the general safety practices and precautions that must be observed when operating the GMD 8000.
This advice is intended to supplement, not supersede, the normal safety codes in the user's country. It is also a supplement to the PerkinElmer standard Safety and Health Policy. The information provided does not cover every safety procedure that should be practiced. Ultimately, maintenance of a safe laboratory environment is the responsibility of the analyst and the analyst's organization.
Please consult all manuals supplied with the GMD 8000 and accessories before you start working with the instrume nt. Carefully read the safety info rmation in this chapter and in the other manuals supplied. When setting up the instrument or performing analyses or ma intenance procedures, strictly follow the instructions provided.

The following precautions must be observed when using the GMD 8000 :
Be sure that the voltage of the instrument corresponds to the voltage used in your laboratory.
Only high quality purge gases should be used wit h the instrument. Minimum purity of
99.9% is recomm ended. A high quality filter-dryer accessory is recommended for the removal of any moisture from the purge gases.
If possible, avoid any adjustment, maintenance and repair of the opened, operating instrument. If a ny adjustment, mai ntenance and repair of the opened instrument is ne cessary, this must be done by a skilled person who is aware of the hazard involved. Whenever it is likely that the G MD 8000 is unsafe, make it inoperative. It may be unsafe if it:
shows visible damage
fails to perform the intended measurement
has been subjected to prolonged st orage in unfavourable conditio ns
has been subjected to sever transport stresses.
Your laboratory should have all equipment ordina r ily required for the safety of individuals working with chemicals (fire extinguishers, first-aid equipment, safety shower and eyewash fountain, spill cleanup equipment , etc.). Always wear safety glasses when using the instrument. Safety glasses with side shields will provide an extra margin of safety as well as mechanical protection for your eyes.

For safety reasons and to avoid contaminating samples, be sure that the instrument and work area are kept scrupulously clean. This is especially important when working with toxic elem ents or when measuring trace amounts of any element. Clean up spilled chemicals immediately and dispose of them properly.
Smoking is a source of significant contamination as well as a potential route for ingesting harmful chemicals.
Food should not be stored, handled, or consumed in the work area.

Safety Summary

The GMD 8000 has been designed to comply with a wide variety of international standards governing the safety of laboratory equipment. In routine use, the instrument poses virtua lly no risk to you. If you take some simple, common-sense precautions, you can make sure that you maintain the conti nued safe operation of your instrument:
DO make sure that the power supply is properly connected to the electrical supply.
DO select the appropriate mains outlet adaptor for your region.
DO NOT open the main instrument cover. DO NOT attempt to make internal adjustments
or replacements except as directed in this guide.
DO keep the instrument dry. Avoid spilling liquid onto the instrument. Clean all ex ternal spills immediately.
DO read the more detailed information on warnings and safety in the following pages to ensure the safe operation of the instrument.
DO NOT operate the instrument with any covers or parts removed.
Servicing should only be carried out by a PerkinElmer Service Engineer or a similarly
authorized and tra ined person.
Disconnect the instrument from all voltage sources bef ore opening it for any adjustment, replacement, maintenance, or repair. If, afterwards, the opened instrument must be operated for further adjustment, maintenance or repair, this must only be done by a skilled person who is aware of the hazard involved.

General Safety

The GMD 8000 has been designed and tested in accordance with PerkinElmer specifications and in accordance with the safety requi rements of the International Electrotechnica l Commission (IEC). The instrument conforms to IEC publication 61010-1 (“Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use”) and therefore meets the requirements of EC low voltage directive 2006/95/EC.
If the instrument is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the protection provided by the instrument may be impaired. For optimum performance, only use the instrument under the following environmental conditions:
Temperature 15 °C to 35 °C Relative Humidity 85% maximum (non-condensing)

The laboratory in which the GMD 8000 is located must meet the following conditions:
Indoor use
A corrosive-free environment.
Altitude up to 2000 m (above mean sea level)
Ambient temperatures of 5 °C to 40 °C
Relative humidity of 20% to 80% without condensation.
Mains supply fluctuations not exceeding ±10% of the nominal voltage
Environmental protection: rated IP20 according to IEC 60529.
Dust levels, 0.5 microns or larg er less than 36 000 000 particles, per cubic meter of air.
The environment should be relatively dust-free to avoid sample and instrument contamination problems.
Free of excessive vibration.
Mains fluctuations not exceeding + 10% of the nominal voltage.

Cle aning the Instrument

Before using any cleaning or decontamination methods except those specified by PerkinElmer, users should check with PerkinElmer that the proposed method will not damage the equipment.
Customers wishing to return instrumentation and/or associated materials to PerkinElmer for repair, maintenance, warranty or trade-in purposes are advised that all return ed goods must be c ertified as clean and free from contamination.
The customer's responsible body is required to follow the “Equipment Decontamination Procedure” and complete the “Certificate of Decontamination”. These documents are available on the PerkinElmer public website:

Electrical Safety

This analyzer conforms to IEC publication 61010-1 ("Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control and laboratory use") as it applies to IEC Class 1 (earthed) appliances, and therefore meets the requirements of the Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC.
The instrument has been designed to protect the operator from potential electrical hazards. This section describes some recommended electrical safety practices.
The instrument must be correctly con nected to a suitable electrical supply. The supply must have a correctly installed protective conductor (earth ground) and must be installed or checked by a qualified electrician before connecting the instrument.
Only use the GMD 8000 with the supplied power supply (shown below). If you should require a replacement adaptor, please contact your PerkinElmer service engineer to supply you with the same one.

When working with the instrument:
Connect the instrument to a correctly installed line power outlet that has a protective conductor connect ion (earth ground).
Do not operate the instrument w ith any covers or internal parts removed.
Do not attempt to make internal adjustments or replacements except as directed in the manuals.
Disconnect the instrument from all voltage source s before opening it for any adjustment,
replacement, maintenance, or repair. If afterwards, the opened instrument must be operated for further adjustment, maintenance, or repair, this must only be done by a PerkinElmer Service engineer.
Whenever it is possible that the instrument is n o longer electrically safe for use, make the instrument inoperative and secure it against any unauthorized or unintentional op eration. The electrical safety of the instrument is likely to be imp aired if, for example, the instrument shows visible damage; has been subjected to prolonged storage under unfavorable conditions; or has been subjected to severe stress during transportation.

This can occur if the gas is allowed to escape in an enclosed area and displaces the oxygen in the air. These gases are neither explosive nor combustible.

Avoid banging the valves and ensur e that the correct valves and ga uges are installed. Gas cylinders should be stored (and placed) outside the laboratory and connected to the instrument through specially cleaned copper tubing. Use care to prevent kinking or stressing the gas tubing. For safety, cylinders should be firmly clampe d in an upright position.

Identification of Gas Cylinders

Storing Cylinders

Perform periodic gas leak tests by applying a soap solution to all joints and seals.

Handling Cylinders

Legibly mark cylinders to identify their contents. Use the chemical name or commercially accepted name for the gas.
Review the following precautions to ensure the safe use and storage of gas cylinders.
Cylinders should be stored in accordance with the regulations and standards applicable to the customers locality, state, and country.
When cylinders are stored indoors in storage rooms, the storage room should be well ventilated and dry. Ensure that the ventilation is adequate to prevent the formation of dangerous accumulations of gas. This is particularly important in small or confined areas.
Do not store cylinders near elevators, gangways, or in locations where heavy moving objects may strike or fall against them.
Use and store cylinders away from exits and exit routes.
Locate cylinders away from heat sources, including heat lamps. Compressed gas cylinders
should not be subjected to temperatures above 52 °C (126 °F).
Do not allow ignition sources in the storage area and keep cylinders away from readily ignitable substances such as gasoline or waste, or combustibles in bulk, including oil.
Store cylinders standing upright , fastened securely to an immovable bulkhead or permanent wall.
When storing cylinders outdoor s, they should be stored above ground on a suitable floor and protected against temperature extremes (including the direct rays of the sun).
Mark gas cylinders clearly to identify the contents and status (full, empty, etc.).
Do not attempt to refill gas cylinders.
Arrange gas hoses where they will not be damaged or stepped on and where things will
not be dropped on them.
Review the following precautions to ensure the safe use and handling of gas cylinde rs.
If it becomes necessary to move cylinders, do so with a suitable hand truck after insuring that the container cap is secured and the cylinder is properly fastened to the hand tr uck.
Use only regulators, tubing and hose connectors approved by an appropriate regulatory agency.
Arrange gas hoses where they will not be damaged or stepped on and where objects will not be dropped on them.
Do not refill cylinders.
Check the condition of pipes, hoses and connectors regularly. Perform gas leak tests at all
joints and seals of the gas system regularly, using an approved gas leak detection system.
When the equipment is turned off, close all gas cylinder valves tightly at the cylinder. Bleed the remainder of the line before turning the exhaust vent off.

Connections

NOTE:
Hydrogen gas or corrosive gases cannot be used.
After the GMD 8000 has been placed into position, it can be connected to the various services in the laboratory.
Approved non-corrosive gases for use with the GMD8 000 are:
Air
Argon
Helium
Nitrogen
Oxygen
Carbon dioxide
The GMD 8000 is factory calibrated for these approved gasses.
Input gases must be dry and filtered. The GMD 8000 is not designed for humid gases.
To make connections to the instrument follow these steps.
1. Connect the USB line to your comput er.
2. Connect the SeaIO Relay Box to the Trigger connector.
3. Look at the rear panel of the GMD 8000.
4. Connect your inp ut gases to Gas in A, Gas in B, and Gas in C.
5. Connect the Gas out gas line to your analyzer.
6. Connect the power to the 12V/1.0A DC connector .
7. Install the SeaIO Relay Box software and SeaIO Hardware by following the instructions
provided with the relay box.

Prior to installing the GMD software the Matlab Component Runtime software must be installed. The Matlab Component Runtime is provided on the GMD8000 installation disc. Simply double-click the MCRInstaller on the GMD 8000 installation disc and follow the on-screen prompts. When done install the GMD 8000 software.
To install the GMD software:
1. Install the USB driver. The CP210x USB to UART Bridge driver is required for the GMD 8000 to be accessible
through a Virtual COM Port. Download and insta ll this driver from the following link:
http://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/pages/usbtouartbridgevcpdrivers.aspx
2. Connect the GMD 8000 to the computer. A popup box displays Found New Hardware.
3. Determine the port the GMD 8000 was assigned to, in this example it is assigned to COM5.
4. Double-click GMD8000_Setup.msi (on your GMD disc) to start installation.
All of the necessary files are automatically copied to the user’s system; then the following screens appear (the screenshots are taken from the 32-bit version of the installer).

5. Click Next or Install on each of the subsequent screens that appear.

6. On the final screen click Finish.

The following procedure is an example on how to use the GMD 8000.
When the GMD is running the LED light on the front indicates the following: Green is ON and Red is error.
To run the GMD 8000:
1. Launch the GMD 8 000 software by double-clicking the GMD 8000 icon on the desktop. The Setting up connection popup box briefly appears.
When done setting up the connection the following screen displays with the initial (default) values.
The default settings are all channels off.

2. Select a Language from the File menu to change all of the controls and options into the selected language.
You can pick from English, Chinese, and Japanese.
3. The Device me nu has two o pti ons: Connect and In fo . Connect allows you to connect the GMD 8000 software to the hardware. You can also check the current status of the instrument in the Info section.
4. Select and assign gas types by clicking the check box and selecting a gas from the drop- down list.
5. When selecting channel A, it is automatica lly set to 100%. Checking more channels w ill leave channel A at 100% until the first edit.

6. Activate the gas flow control. The power icon is di mmed out when the GMD 8000 is in the standby mode (OFF) and
lights up Red when active (ON).
On a power outage or power down, all gases shut off. All input and output channel editing can also be performed while gas flow control is inactive
(power switch off).
7. Type a Gas Out flow or a lternately slide the fader. The following shows a flow of 20 sccm.
The real-time flow bars (to the left of the slider) display the real-time flow rate in each channel that is active when the GMD 8000 gas flow control is turned on.

8. If a mixture is desired, enter the percentage of Gas in A or alternately slide the fader. The percentage of Gas in B will be calculated and displayed.
If three gases are used, enter the percentage of Gas in A and Gas in B, the percentage of Gas in C will be calculated.
9. Save the Gas Settings by clicking Save or Save As from the File menu. The Save GMD 8000 settings file dialog box appears.
Type a File name a nd se lect a directory where you want to save this file, then click Save.
10. The channel settings that were active before the most recent program shutdown can always be restored by opening the autosave file:

Linking Gas Channels

When linking channels it evenly splits the gas between the channels.
1. When you have selected two adjacent channels the link icon appears.
2. Click the link icon to evenly split the gases.

Running a Gas Mix Program

1. You can expand the GMD 8000 display by clicking the expand button (shown below) to run a Gas Mix Program.
This feature allows the creation of a program to Ramp or Switch.

Mix 1 is applied.
5. Select an ending mix from the stored mix programs as mix 2.
In this example, the initial gas will be 100% N2. At 1 minute into the run, the gas will switch to the mixture of 50% N2/50% O2.
6. Adjust the time of the switch as needed. Also, adjust the amount of time Gas Mix 2 will be applied.
If using the GMD 8000 with Pyris software , determine the length of the method and at which time in the method the gas switch is to take place. For example, if the total run time is 20 minutes and you wish to switch from pure N2 (Mix1) to the 50/50 Gas Mix (Mix2) after one minute, enter 19 minutes in the Mix2 time.

7. The program can be manually started by pressing the green Play button and stopped by pressing the red Stop button next to it.
8. If desired click the Ramp checkbox
to allow the mixture to gradually change
from the initial mixture to the final m ixture.
Using the same mixtures as an example, the pure N2 will gradually change to the 50/50 mix over the time span determined by the user (1 minute).
Selecting the Cycle checkbox means the same program repeats in the player forever.

Connecting the GMD 8000 to Pyris

When using Pyris software with the GMD 8000 you will need a SeaIO Relay Box to Trigger a connection to the GMD.
To connect the GMD 8000 to Pyris:
1. In the Pyris software, click on Tools > Preferences. The Preferences dialogue box will appear (see below)
2. Check Use Relay Box.
3. To trigger the GMD 8000 ON and OF F from Pyris, go to the Method Editor and click the
Program tab.
4. Select a step, right-click (to highlight it), then select Add an Action from the popup box.
