Palm-SPEC Operating Software

When you purchased a Palm-SPEC Spectrophotometer, you received a handheld PC with
Windows CE and the OOIPS2000 Palm-SPEC Operating Software already installed. However,
there are times when you will need to download a new version of OOIPS2000 Palm-SPEC
Operating Software from the Ocean Optics web site to your handheld, via a desktop or notebook
PC. These instances include:

• You want the most recently upgraded OOIPS2000

• You already have a handheld, and you are only purchasing the software

• OOIPS2000 no longer appears on your handheld

Why OOIPS2000 no longer appears on the Jornada

OOIPS2000 can only be saved to RAM. Is in not possible to save the software permanently to
ROM. Therefore, if you use the Jornada out of its cradle, do not let the rechargeable batteries
become completely drained. If both the main battery and the backup battery do become
completely drained, OOIPS2000 and any other software and data saved to the RAM will be lost.
The Jornada can operate with drained batteries, but only if the Jornada is in its cradle and the
cradle is always plugged into a power source.

Unfortunately, once both batteries become completely drained, the cradle cannot sufficiently
recharge the Jornada. More bad news: If you'd like to have the batteries recharged so that you
can use the Jornada without its cradle, you will have to contact Hewlett Packard. They will ask
that you send the Jornada to them to recharge or replace the batteries.

To be certain that the software is lost, try the Start | Find function and type in OOIPS2000. If the
software is indeed lost, you need to download OOIPS2000 Palm-SPEC Operating Software from
our web site and install it. You will need to save the setup program on your desktop or notebook
PC while the Jornada is connected to your PC.

Downloading OOIPS2000

1. When you received your Palm-SPEC, you should have received and installed ActiveSync for
Windows CE onto your desktop or notebook PC. If you did not install this software, please do
so now. This software allows your desktop or notebook PC to talk to your handheld.

2. Disconnect the Jornada from the spectrometer. Connect power to the Jornada. Connect the
Jornada to your PC via the RS-232 (serial) cord.

3. Go to our software downloads web page at:

http://www.OceanOptics.com/Technical/SoftwareDownloads.asp .

4. Find OOIPS2000 Palm-SPEC Operating Software. It's the third item under Operating
Software. Double click on this link. Save the Setup.exe file to your desktop or notebook PC.

5. Open the Setup.exe file. When asked for a password, type in the case-sensitive password for
the software. This password is located on the back of the Ocean Optics Software and
Technical Resources CD jewel case that came with your Palm-SPEC. If you cannot locate
this password, you will have to contact Ocean Optics.

6. Follow the on-screen prompts to save OOIPS2000 to your handheld.
