Features
The most outstanding feature of the D8 Series is the expandable scalability. It enables small start
and online expansion of the scalability. Not only the scalability within the unit (referred to as node)
such as controller, cache and HDD, the D8 can expand its scalability by adding nodes. By this
scalability, the D8 Series can cover a broad range from low-end area to high-end area.

Internal Structure
The minimum configuration of the node consists of 5U Controller (DAC) and 2U Disk Enclosure (DE).
The controller of one node consists of Host Director (HD) to control the host I/F, Cache Module (CHE)
to control the cache memory, Disk Director (DD) to control the disk I/F and Local Switch (LSW) to
connect these cards and nodes at high speed. Additionally, each node of the D8 has 4 power supply
units, flash memories to save the data of cache memory, and batteries.
The minimum configuration of DAC consists of 2 HD’s, 2 CHE’s and 2 DD’s, and each of them can
expand to 4 in each node. (CHE can individually expand to 4 but as for HD and DD, either of them
can selectively expand to 4.)
Each HD has 4 FC ports (8Gbps) so that it can expand to 4 HD’s with 16 FC ports. DD has SAS
(Serial Attached SCSI) of 3Gbps for the I/F between DAC and DE, WideLink of 4 ports in parallel
realizing a 12Gbps broadband connection.
DE can have up to 12 units of SAS HDD and SATA HDD together and can connect up to 16 unit of
DE and 192 units of disk drive to 2 units of DD. When the DD expands to 4 units, up to 32 units of
DE and 384 units of disk drive can be connected.
As for the disk drive, you can mount SAS drive of 147GB (15,000rpm), 300GB (15,000rpm), 450GB
(15,000rpm), and 600GB(15,000rpm) and SATA drive of 750GB (7,200rpm),1,000GB (7,200rpm), and
2,000GB(7,200rpm) together.
As for cache memory, the standard configuration is 8GB and it can expand up to 32GB in one node.
When available, up to 4 nodes can congregate. In this case, it has scalability of up to 64 host ports,
up to 1536 disk drives and up to 128GB of cache memory. If there are multiple nodes in a unit, it can
access disk drives of any node from a host port, and it is also possible to make a certain host port to
access to certain HDD’s by AccessControl.

(2) Selection of BaseProduct
The D8 Disk Array Unit requires the program product“BaseProduct” per Disk Array Unit separately
in addition to H/W products. It includes storage control software and NEC Storage Manager,
comprehensively monitoring and managing the Disk Array Unit of D Series.
BaseProduct with necessary grade according to the number of node of D8 Disk Array Unit, number of
connected server/connection FC controller (number of HBA port) is required.
Besides, in case you “adding nodes” or “adding Host Director,” and even if you do not add these
options, in case you add the number of connected server/connection FC controller (number of HBA port),
check the grade of the existing BaseProduct and purchase an upgrade product if necessary.

Product Name No. of maximum server
*1 This figure is number of HBA connection port which is attached on server.
- As for the D Series, AccessControl is not an optional product but it is included in the BaseProduct.
(cf. AccessControl is an optional product for the S Series.)
-As for the D Series, the number of connections is defined as the number of server and the number of
HBA connections.
(cf. For the S Series, the number of connections was defined as only the number of HBA ports.)
“Lite” includes AccessControl for 2 or less servers (4 or less HBA ports).
“Standard” includes AccessControl for 8 or less servers (16 or less HBA ports).
“Enterprise” includes AccessControl for 9 or more servers.
e.g.
“<=2 servers (<=4 HBA port connections)”license means the following.
- 1 server with 4 paths: Allowed.
- 2 servers with 2 paths each: Allowed.
- 3 servers with 1 path each: NOT allowed. (It exceeds “2 servers”.)
- 2 servers with 3 paths each: NOT allowed. (It exceeds “4 HBA port connections”.)

(3) Selection of Quantity/Capacity of Disk Drive
The logical disk capacity you can configure varies depending on the type (I/F, capacity) of disk drive
and the level of RAID.
Besides, necessary logical disk capacity varies depending on the functions you use (e.g.
Snapshot/Replication function).
To determine the necessary number of disk drive, it is necessary to determine the type (I/F,
capacity, rotation number) of disk drive and the level of RAID according to the usage of data and
calculate the necessary logical disk capacity by referring to the following information.
Beside, you are required to mount at least 3 or more disk drives per node, regardless of the type
(SAS/SATA) of disk drive.
Meanwhile, for support RAID type, refer to “Support RAID” mentioned below.
DE#00
#00 #01 #02 #03
#04 #05 #06 #07
#08 #09 #0A #0B
* Make sure to mount disk drives into slots
#00, #01 and #02.
(Notes)
Snapshot
Snapshot reserved area is necessary for creating snapshot to a master volume.
Replication
In case of using replication function, using Storage System Information Retention Function* to
create the Storage System Volume is strongly recommended.
3
The capacity of storage system volume is 8.9GB (1GB=1000
Byte)/8.3 GB (1GB=10243 Byte).
By turning the power off according to the normal procedure, Storage System Data (difference
map etc.) will be backed up into the Storage System Volume. Without the Storage System
Volume, it retains the storage system information in cache memory within a battery backup
time but the lifetime of battery will shorten. In case not to use the Storage System Volume 24
hours power distribution is recommended.
*Storage System Information Retention Function is the function to back up storage system
data such as difference map of Master Volume (MV) and Replication Volume (RV) to a disk
drive.

(3-4) Hot Spare Disk
- Hot spare disk is recommended to enhance the availability of a unit.
- There is no upper limit for the number of hot spare disks.
- Hot spare disk operates only in the same Disk Director (basic Disk Director: 16DE,192HDD,
Expansion Disk Director: 16DE, 192HDD) in a node.
- The default setting of hot spare operation does not allow the data to be written back. When the hot
spare disk is used and the failed disk is replaced, the replacement disk is defined as a new hot
spare disk.
In case you set the hot spare operation so that the data is to be written back, the data in the hot
spare disk will be transferred to the replacement disk, and after the completion of the “write
back”, the hot spare disk will be used for the backup again. The operation of hot spare disk can be
set from the NEC Storage Manager.
- Hot spare disk can be used for the disk drives with the same interface.
- Hot spare disk is recommended to be the same capacity and the same rotation speed as the disks
in the pools. If different types of disks are used in different pools, there should also be different
types of hot spare disks accordingly.
- If there are multiple types of hot spare disks, the same type of disk as the disk in the defected
pool*1 is selectively used for backup.
- When the type of disk that used in the defected pool is not left as a hot spare disk, the hot spare
disks are used in the following order of priority.
1. The hot spare disk with the same type of interface, same capacity, same or more
rotation speed as the disk in the defected pool.
2. The hot spare disk with the same type of interface, same or more capacity as the disk in
the defected pool.
- As the recommended number of the hot spare disk is different between SAS and SATA Disk
Drives, refer to the tables in a) and b) below:

(3-5) Mixed Use of Disk Drive
- This disk array unit can have SAS/SATA disk drives together, and disk drives with different
capacity/rotation speed together, in the basic chassis and in the same SAS/SATA disk enclosure.
- It is strongly recommended to use the same type of disks in a pool.
(4) Selection of Quantity of SAS/SATA Disk Enclosure
- 1 unit of disk enclosure can mount max. 12 units of SAS or SATA disk drive together.
- In a basic configuration, 1 unit of disk enclosure per node is included as standard.
This disk enclosure should be “DE#00” (see the following diagram “DE Connection”).
- For DE#00, at least 3 or more disk drives are required.
The mounting position of the disk is as
follows:
DE#00
#00 #01 #02 #03
#04 #05 #06 #07
#08 #09 #0A #0B
*make sure to mount disk drives into slots
#00, #01 and #02.
- For a Disk Director with standard configuration, you can connect max.16 units (including a disk
enclosure included as standard) of disk enclosure.
- In case you mount an expansion Disk Director, you can connect additionally max.16 units of disk
enclosure to it. In this case, you can connect totally max. 32 units of disk enclosure per node.
- The disk enclosure includes 1m SAS cable as standard. For the case in which the distance between
two units are too long for the 1m SAS cable, 5m SAS cable is also available.

(5) Selection of Cache Memory
Minimum capacity of cache memory per node is 8GB and the performance of disk array unit
improves by adding the cache memory. You can expand the cache memory from 8GB to 16GB and 32GB.
8GB cache memory consists of 2 cache memory modules, and 8GB or more cache memory consists of 4
cache memory modules.
In case the cache memory module is configured with 2 modules, it operates as a duplicated cache, and
in the event of the failure of cache memory module, Write Cache operation changes to Write through
like conventional mid-sized machine, and Write performance significantly deteriorates. However, in
case of the cache memory modules are configure by 4 modules, they operate as two pairs of duplicated
cache and in the event of the failure of cache memory module, as redundancy is
kept by the other pair, Write Cache operation can continue. Therefore, you can minimize the
performance deterioration.this unit.
By adding cache, due to the effect of cache hit, you can improve Read/Write performance of the unit.
According to the performance cache hit you expect, you need to add the cache memory but in general,
mount the cache in proportion to the disk capacity you mount into the unit. The followings are
our recommendable figures to mount cache for disk capacity:
Meanwhile, the cache memory works as the disk cache of the disk drives of the mounted node.
In addition, in case of multiple nodes, you can expand the capacity individually.

(8) Addition of Node
1. Upgrade by adding nodes
By adding a new D8-3010 configuration with using extended node chasis to the existing D8-3010, it
can be upgraded to 2 nodes configuration
In this case, one set of cable between nodes (7m) [NF9120-SJ65] , Cache memory, Host Director, and
Disk Director are required.
Likewise, by adding a new D8-3010 configuration with using extended node chassis and 2 sets of the
cable [NF9120-SJ65] to the existing 2 nodes configration, it can be upgraded to 3 nodes configuration
without interrupting operation.
By adding a new D8-3010 configuration with using extended node chassis to the existing 3 nodes
configuration unit, it can be upgraded to 4 nodes configuration, without interrupting operation.
In case of units in multiple nodes, you can access to disk drives of any node of from a host
port. AccessControl can associate host ports and disk drives.
Note: The number of node is the same as the number of the DAC chassis.
