General Instructions

άAlways provide detailed instructions on how to correctly use the pole hedge trimmer when lending the equipment to another personέ εake sure that the instruction manual is handed over together with the pole hedge trimmerέ

άFirstάtime users should ask their dealer for basic instructions on the correct handling of the pole hedge trimmerέ

άStore this manual in a location where it is easily accessible for quick referenceέ

άDo not allow persons under the age of 1κ to operate the pole hedge trimmerέ Individuals over 1θ years old, however, may use the pole hedge trimmer for training purposes if under the constant supervision of an adult familiar with the operation of the pole hedge trimmerέ

άAlways use the pole hedge trimmer with the utmost care and attentionέ

άNever attempt to modify the equipment.

άFollow the regulations about handling of pole hedge trimmers in your countryέ

άSerious injury may result if the pole hedge trimmer is used in the following circumstancesέ Do not use the pole hedge trimmerμ

Intended use

άThis pole hedge trimmer has been designed for the sole purpose of trimming hedges and bushesέ Do not use the pole hedge trimmer for any other purposesέ

Personal protective equipment

άClothes worn should be functional and tightάitting without restricting movementέ Do not wear clothing or jewelry that could get entangled in underbrush or in the machine.

άFor adequate protection against injuries to head, eyes, feet, hands, as well as hearing impairment, the following protective equipment and clothing must be used when working with the pole hedge trimmerέ

άTo prevent injury to the head or the eyes, always wear a protective helmet (1) with goggles or a visor (β)έ

άTo avoid hearing impairment, wear adequate ear defenders (γ) at all timesέ

άUse of a wellάitting work overalls (4) is strongly recommendedέ

άAlways wear rugged, leather working gloves (η) when operating the pole hedge trimmer.

άWhen using the pole hedge trimmer, always wear sturdy shoes (θ) with a nonάslip soleέ Special work shoes ensure good footing and protect against injuryέ

άWhen touching blades or blade unit, wear protective glovesέ Blades can cut bare hands severely.

Work area safety

ά DANGER: Keep the pole hedge trimmer away from electric lines and communication cablesέ Touching or approaching highάvoltage lines with pole hedge trimmer can result in death or serious injuryέ Watch power lines and electrical fences around the work area before starting operationέ

άStart and operate the engine only outdoors in a well ventilated areaέ τperation in a conined or poorly ventilated area can result in death due to suffocation or carbon monoxide poisoningέ

άDuring operation, keep bystanders, in particular children, or animals at least 1η m away from the pole hedge trimmerέ Stop the engine as soon as someone approaches.

άBefore operation, examine the work area for wire fences, stones, or other solid objectsέ They can damage the bladesέ

ά WARNING: Use of this product can create dust containing chemicals which may cause respiratory or other illnesses. Some examples of these chemicals are compounds found in pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers and herbicidesέ Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of workέ To reduce your exposure to these chemicalsμ work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that are specially designed to ilter out microscopic particlesέ

Starting the pole hedge trimmer

άBefore assembling or adjusting the equipment, switch off the engine and remove the spark plug capέ

άBefore starting the pole hedge trimmer, always make sure that the machine is in safe operational condition.

άσever attempt to start the engine if the equipment is damagedέ

άCheck the operation of the throttle lever safety mechanismέ The lockάoff lever should have a smooth and easy actionέ εake sure that the lockάoff lever functions properlyέ Check that the handles are clean and dry and test the STτP switch to ensure that it is functioning properlyέ

Always start the pole hedge trimmer in accordance with the directions provided in this instruction manual.

Follow the instructions below to start the pole hedge trimmer

άStart the pole hedge trimmer only after the machine has been completely assembled and all accessory parts have been attached.

άWhen starting the engine, keep the blades clear of your body and other object, including the groundέ The blades may move when starting and may cause serious injury or damage to the blades andήor propertyέ

άBefore starting the engine, make sure that cutter blades are not obstructed by any foreign objects such as stones, branches, etcέ

άStop the engine immediately if engine problems occurέ

άWhen pulling the starter knob, hold the equipment irmly against the ground by your left hand. Never step on the drive shaft.

άIf the blades move at idle, stop the engine and adjust the idle speed downέ

άWhen operating the pole hedge trimmer, always maintain a irm grip on both handlesέ Wrap your ingers tightly around each handle, cradling the handle between thumb and foreingerέ To keep the pole hedge trimmer under control at all times, avoid changing your grip during operationέ εake sure that the control handles are in good condition and free of moisture, mud, oil or greaseέ

Always ensure secure and well-balanced footing

άAlways stop the engine immediately and discontinue operation if engine trouble occurs or if the machine starts making unusual noiseέ

άExhaust fumes are poisonous. Never operate the machine in an enclosed room or tunnel without ventilation (risk of suffocation and gas poisoning)έ σote that carbon monoxide is an odorless gasέ Always make sure that areas where the engine is operated are adequately ventilatedέ

άStop the engine when resting, or when the pole hedge trimmer is left unattendedέ Place the machine in a safe location and make sure that no combustible material is nearby.

άσever place a hot pole hedge trimmer onto dry grass or combustible materialέ

άTo reduce the risk of ire, keep the engine and mufler free of debris, leaves or excessive lubricant.

άσever operate the engine if the mufler is malfunctioningέ

άTurn off the engine before transportationέ

άAlways stop the engine whenμ

άWhen carrying the equipment, carry it in a horizontal position by holding the shaftέ Keep the hot mufler away from your bodyέ

άWhen transporting the machine in a vehicle, always securely attach the pole hedge trimmer to avoid leakage of residual fuelέ

άAlways empty the fuel tank before transporting the pole hedge trimmer in a vehicle.

άWhen unloading the machine from a vehicle, take extra care not to drop the pole hedge trimmer to the ground, as this may seriously damage the fuel tankέ

άExcept in an emergency, never drop the pole hedge trimmer as this may seriously damage the machineέ

άWhen transporting the pole hedge trimmer, always lift the machine completely off of the groundέ σever drag the engine across the ground as this may damage the fuel tank and possibly cause a ireέ

άAlways use the cutter cover provided to protect and secure the cutting section of the pole hedge trimmer during transportation and storageέ

άIf the equipment gets heavy impact or fall, check the condition before continuing workέ Check the fuel system for fuel leakage and the controls and safety devices for malfunctionέ If there is any damage or doubt, ask our authorized service center for the inspection and repair.

Refuelling

άBefore refuelling, stop the engineέ

άσever refuel near naked lamesέ

άDo not smoke when refuellingέ

άAlways allow suficient time for the engine to cool down before refuellingέ

άTake care not to let your skin come into contact with petroleum productsέ Do not inhale gasoline fumes and always wear protective gloves when refuellingέ Change and clean protective wear at regular intervalsέ

άTake extra care to avoid spilling gasoline and oil in order to avoid contamination of the ground (environmental protection)έ If gasoline or oil has been spilled onto the pole hedge trimmer, immediately wipe the surface of the pole hedge trimmer with a ragέ

To avoid spontaneous combustion, allow wet rags to dry suficiently before discarding them into an appropriate, covered containerέ

άεake sure that no fuel comes in contact with your clothingέ Change fuelά contaminated clothing immediately (ire hazard)έ

άClose the fuel tank and tighten the fuel tank cap securelyέ To restart the engine, transfer the pole hedge trimmer to a location at least γ meters away from the place of refuellingέ

άCheck the fuel tank cap at regular intervals to make sure that the cap is securely fastened.

άσever refuel the machine in an enclosed roomέ Fuel vapors accumulate at ground level (risk of explosion)έ

άStore fuel in appropriate containers only, and make sure that stored fuel is out of the reach of children.

Operation

άIn the event of an emergency, turn off the engine immediatelyέ

άIf you feel any unusual condition (eέgέ noise, vibration) during operation, switch off the engineέ Do not use the pole hedge trimmer until the cause is recognized and solved.

άThe blades continue to move for a short period after releasing the throttle trigger or switch off the engineέ Don’t rush to contact the bladesέ

άNever attempt to operate the equipment with one hand. Loss of control may result in serious or fatal injuryέ To reduce the risk of cut injuries, keep your hands and feet away from the blades.

άKeep your right hand under the shoulder height during operationέ τtherwise you may lose control and result in injury.

άDuring operation, never hit the blades against hard obstacles such stones and metalsέ Take particular care when cutting hedges next to or against wire fencesέ When working close to the ground, make sure that no sand, grit or stones get between the blades.

άIf the blades come into contact with stones or other solid objects, stop the engine immediately and check the blades for damage after removing the spark plug capέ Replace the blades if damagedέ

άσever touch or approach the blades while they are movingέ Blades can cut your inger easilyέ When handling or approaching the blade, stop the engine and remove the spark plug capέ

άIf thick branches get jammed in the blades, immediately stop the engine, put the pole hedge trimmer down and then remove the obstruction after removing the spark plug capέ Check the blades for damage before using the equipment againέ

άAccelerating the engine with the blades blocked increases the load and may damage the engine andήor clutchέ

άCheck the cutting blades frequently during operation for cracks or blunt edgesέ Before the inspection, switch off the engine and wait until the blades stop completelyέ Replace damaged or dull blades immediately, even if they have only supericial cracksέ

άDo not touch the gear caseέ The gear case becomes hot during operationέ

άTake a rest to prevent loss of control caused by fatigueέ We recommend to take a 1ί to βίάminute rest every hourέ

άBefore cutting, pull the throttle lever fully to achieve the maximum speedέ

άDuring operation, hold the pole hedge trimmer with both hands at all timesέ

άτnly use the pole hedge trimmer in good light and visibility conditionsέ Beware of slippery and wet areas (ice and snow) during the cold season (danger of slipping), and always ensure secure footingέ

άσever use the pole hedge trimmer while standing on an unstable surface or a steep slope.

άσever use the pole hedge trimmer while standing on a ladderέ

άσever climb a tree to use the pole hedge trimmer from the treeέ

άTo avoid stumbling or falling over objects, never walk backwards when working with the pole hedge trimmerέ

άAlways stop the engine before cleaning or servicing the machineέ Also, refrain from replacing parts before the engine has been stoppedέ

άDo not operate the pole hedge trimmer if the cutting unit is damaged or wornέ

Vibration

άPeople with poor circulation who are exposed to excessive vibration may experience injury to blood vessels or the nervous systemέ Vibration may cause the following symptoms to occur in the ingers, hands or wristsμ “Falling asleep” (numbness), tingling, pain, stabbing sensation, alteration of skin color or of the skinέ If any of these symptoms occur, see a physician!

άTo reduce the risk of “white inger disease”, keep your hands warm during operation and well maintain the equipment and accessories.

Maintenance instructions

άHave your equipment serviced by our authorized service center, always using only genuine replacement partsέ Incorrect repair and poor maintenance can shorten the life of the equipment and increase the risk of accidentsέ

άAlways do your utmost to keep pollution and noise emissions as low as possible when operating the pole hedge trimmerέ Pay special attention to correct adjustment of the carburetor.

άClean the pole hedge trimmer at regular intervals and periodically check whether all nuts and bolts are securely tightenedέ

άσever service or store the pole hedge trimmer in the vicinity of naked lames, sparks, etcέ

άσever repair bent or broken blades by straightening or weldingέ It may cause

parts of the blades to come off and result in serious injury. Contact MAKITA authorized service center for εAKITA genuine blades to replace themέ

άTo prevent further damage andήor personal injury, refrain from repairing a malfunctioning pole hedge trimmer if not qualiied to do soέ For repairs always contact your dealer or an authorized service agentέ

Do not attempt to modify or remodel the pole hedge trimmer as this may affect operation safety.

εaintenance work that can be performed by the user is limited to the activities

described in this instruction manual. Any other procedures are to be executed by an authorized service agentέ

Request εAKITA authorized service center to inspect and maintain the pole hedge trimmer at regular intervalέ

Use only genuine spare parts and accessories supplied by εAKITA via authorized

service centers.

Storage

άBefore storing the equipment, perform full cleaning and maintenanceέ Fit the blade cover.

άEmpty the fuel tank before storage, and always store the pole hedge trimmer in a wellάventilated locked roomέ εake sure the pole hedge trimmer is out of children’s reach at all times.

άDo not prop the equipment against something, such as a wallέ τtherwise the pole hedge trimmer may fall suddenly and cause an injuryέ

First aid

As a precaution for the occurrence of an accident, make sure that a fully stocked irst aid kit is ready at handέ

Replace any items taken from the irst aid kit as soon as possibleέ

CONNECTING THE TRIMMER UNIT TO THE POLE

WARNING:

•εake sure that the engine is turned off, and remove the spark plug cap before assembling the pole hedge trimmerέ

•Wear protective gloves!

•Secure cutting blades with the blade cover provided when connecting the trimmer unit to the pole.

1. Remove the cap from the shaft.

στTEμ εake sure that the shaft is completely inserted into the gear case (approxέ 44 mmή1έιγ”)έ

If you are having trouble inserting the shaft, manually rotate the drive axle a little and try againέ

4έ εake sure that the shaft is properly inserted and then tighten the εη x 1β screw and the εη x βη boltέ

FUEL/REFUELLING

BEFORE START OF OPERATION

Inspection and reill of engine oil

άPerform the following procedure, with the engine cooled downέ

άSet the engine level, remove oil cap (Figέ 1), and check to see whether or not there is oil in the range between the upper limit and lower limit marks of the oil pipe (Figέ β)έ

άTop up with oil to upper limit mark if oil is insuficient (oil level is close to lower limit mark) (Figέ γ)έ

άThe area surrounding the external marks is transparent, so the amount of oil inside can be checked without having to remove the oil capέ However, if oil pipe becomes extremely dirty, visibility may be lost, and oil level will have to be checked against stepped section on inside of oil pipe.

άFor reference, the oil reill time is about 1ί h (every 1ί refuelling)έ

If the oil changes in color or mixes with dirt, replace it with new oneέ (For the interval and method of replacement, refer to P1λ)

Recommended oil: SAE 1ίWάγί oil of API Classiication, Class SF or higher (4άstroke engine for automobile)

Oil volume:

Approx. 0.08 L

στTEμ If the engine is not kept upright, oil may go into around the engine, and may be reilled excessivelyέ If the oil is illed above the limit, the oil may be contaminated or may catch ire with white smokeέ

άRemove dust or dirt near the oil reill port, and detach the oil capέ

άKeep the detached oil cap free of sand or dustέ τtherwise, any sand or dust adhering to the oil cap may cause irregular oil circulation or wear on the engine parts, which will result in troublesέ

The area between the

external upper and lower limits is transparent, so oil level can be checked extternally against these marksέ

(1) Keep the engine level, and detach the oil capέ

(β)Fill with oil to upper limit markέ (see Figέ γ) Use oil bottle when illingέ

(γ) Securely tighten the oil capέ Insuficient tightening may cause oil leakageέ

•Do not replace oil with the engine in a tilted positionέ

•Filling with oil while engine is tilted leads to overilling which causes oil contamination andήor white smokeέ

Point 2 in Replacement of oil: “If oil spills out”

άIf oil spills out between the fuel tank and engine main unit, the oil is sucked into through the cooling air intake port, which will contaminate the engineέ Be sure to wipe out spilled oil before start of operationέ

REFUELLING

Handling of fuel

It is necessary to handle fuel with utmost careέ Fuel may contain substances similar to solventsέ Refuelling must be performed in a suficiently ventilated room or in the open airέ σever inhale fuel vapors, and keep fuel away from youέ If you touch fuel repeatedly or for a long time, the skin becomes dry, which may cause skin disease or allergyέ If fuel comes into the eye, clean the eye with fresh waterέ If your eye remains still irritated, consult your doctorέ

Storage period of fuel

Fuel should be used within a period of 4 weeks, even if it is kept in a special container in a wellάventilated and shaded areaέ τtherwise, fuel may deteriorate in one dayέ

άKeep the machine and tank at a cool place free from direct sunshineέ

άσever keep the fuel in a carέ

The engine is a fourάstroke engineέ Be sure to use an unleaded automobile gasoline κι or higher octane ((R+ε)ήβ)έ It may contain no more than 1ί% alcohol (Eά1ί)έ

Points for fuel

άσever use a gasoline mixture which contains engine oilέ τtherwise, it will cause excessive carbon accumulation or mechanical troublesέ

άUse of deteriorated oil will cause irregular startάupέ

Refuelling

WARNING: INFLAMMABLES STRICTLY PROHIBITED

άδoosen the tank cap a little to release the tank pressureέ

άDetach the tank cap, and refuel, discharging air by tilting the fuel tank so that the refuel port will be oriented upwardέ (Dτ στT ill fuel up to the top of the tankέ)

άWipe well the periphery of the tank cap to prevent foreign matter from entering the fuel tankέ

άAfter refuelling, securely tighten the tank capέ

•If there is any law or damage on the tank cap, replace itέ

•The tank cap wears out in course of timeέ Replace it every two to three yearsέ

PRECAUTIONS BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE

ά At all times allow a 1ηάmeter diameter safety zone around the working areaέ εake sure that all persons (in particular children) andήor animals remain outside

this zone.

ά Before using the pole hedge trimmer, make sure that the machine is in safe operational conditionέ εake sure that the cutting blades are not damaged, and check the throttle lever for easy actionέ εake sure that the cutting blades are not in motion when the engine is idlingέ If the machine is not operating normally, contact your dealer to have the machine adjustedέ εake sure that the handles are clean and dry, and test whether the Iάτ switch is functioning properlyέ Start the engine only in accordance with the instructions given in this manualέ Do not use any other methods to start the pole hedge trimmerέ

άStart the engine of the pole hedge trimmer only after having read and fully understood the instructionsέ σever attempt to start a pole hedge trimmer that has

not been fully assembled. Serious injury may result otherwise.

ά Before starting the engine, always make sure that the cutting blades are not obstructed by stones, branches or any other solid objectsέ

άCheck the working area for wires, cord, glass or other foreign objects that could get caught in the cutting bladesέ

άElectrical shockμ Be aware of all electrical lines in the vicinityέ Check the entire work area for the presence of power lines and electrical fences before starting to workέ

POINTS IN OPERATION AND HOW TO STOP

STARTING

εove at least γ m away from the place of refuellingέ Put the pole hedge trimmer on a clean piece of ground taking care that the cutting blades do not come into contact with the ground or any other objectsέ

A: Cold start

1)	Set this machine on a lat spaceέ
β)	Set the Iάτ switch (1) to τPERATIτσέ

γ) Primer pump

Continue to push the primer pump until the fuel comes into the primer pump. (In general, fuel comes into the primer pump by ι to 1ί pushesέ) If the primer pump is pushed excessively, an excess of gasoline returns to the fuel tankέ

4)Recoil starter

Pull the start knob gently until it is hard to pull (compression point)έ Then, return the start knob, and pull it stronglyέ σever pull the rope to the full extensionέ τnce the start knob is pulled, never release your hand immediatelyέ Hold the start knob until it returns to its original pointέ

η) Warmάup operation

Continue warmάup operation for β to γ minutesέ

στTEμ In case of excessive fuel intake, remove the spark plug and pull the starter handle slowly to remove excess fuelέ Also, dry the electrode section of the spark plugέ

Caution during operation:

If the throttle lever is opened fully in a noάload operation, the engine speed is increased to 1ί,ίίί minά1 (rpm) or moreέ σever operate the engine at a higher speed than required and at an approximate speed of θ,ίίί ά λ,ίίί minά1 (rpm)έ

B: Startup after warm-up operation

1)	Repeat pushing the primer pump gentlyέ
β)	Keep the throttle lever at the idling positionέ
γ)	Pull the recoil starter stronglyέ

4)If it is dificult to start the engine, open the throttle by about 1ήγέ Pay attention to the cutting blades which may moveέ

At times, such as winter, when starting the engine is dificult, operate choke lever with the following procedure when starting engine.

•After implementing startup steps 1) to γ), set choke lever to the CδτSE positionέ

•Implement startup step 4) and start engineέ

•τnce engine starts, set choke lever to the τPEσ positionέ

•Implement startup step η) and complete warm upέ

CAUTIτσμ If a bang (explosive sound) is heard and the engine stops, or the justάstarted engine stalls before the choke lever is operated, return the choke lever to the τPEσ position, and pull the starter knob a few times again to start the engineέ

CAUTIτσμ If the choke lever is left in the CδτSE position, and the starter knob merely pulled repeatedly, to much fuel will be sucked in, and the engine will become dificult to startέ

STOPPING

1)	Release the throttle lever (β) fully, and when the engine speed has lowered, set
	the Iάτ switch to STτP the engine will now stopέ
β)	Be aware that the cutting head may not stop immediately and allow it to slow
	down fully.

ADJUSTMENT OF LOW-SPEED ROTATION (IDLING)

When it is necessary to adjust the lowάspeed rotation (idling), perform it by the carburetor adjusting screwέ

CHECKUP OF LOW-SPEED ROTATION

άSet the lowάspeed rotation to γ,ίίί rpm (ήmin)έ

If it is necessary to change the rotation speed, regulate the adjusting screw (illustrated on the right), with Phillips screwdriverέ

άTurn the adjusting screw to the right, and the engine speed will increaseέ Turn the adjusting screw to the left, and the engine speed will dropέ

άThe carburetor is generally adjusted before shipmentέ If it is necessary to readjust it, please contact Authorized Service Agentέ
