System Relay: Description and Operation
A/C relay
A/C relay is an electrical switching box that closes circuit to condenser fan relay and compressor
clutch. Relay is controlled by engine control module (ECM) only. If engine coolant exceeds a
certain temperature, engine control module (ECM) sends a signal triggering A/C relay and shutting
off A/C system. At starting or lighten acceleration, engine control module (ECM) sends a signal
triggering A/C relay and shutting off A/C system for five seconds. It is a replaceable item.

How to Check For Malfunction
Inspection of parts
When removed, each part should be carefully inspected for malfunction deformations, damage, or
other problems.
How to Check For Continuity
When a tester is being used to check for continuity or to measure voltage, insert the tester probe
from the wire harness side. Check the terminals of waterproof connectors from the connector side,
because they cannot be accessed from the wire harness side.
NOTE: Attach as all gauge wire (straightened paper clip) to the tester probe to prevent damage to
the connector terminal. Do not damage the terminal when inserting the tester lead.

How to Check Terminals
Pull lightly on individual wires to check that they are secured in the terminal.
Sensors, Switches, and Relays
NOTE: Handle sensors, switches and relays carefully. Do not drop them or strike them against
other parts.
Checking Cables and Wires
CHECKING CABLES AND WIRES
1. Check the terminal for tightness. 2. Check terminals and wires for corrosion by battery
electrolyte, etc. 3. Check terminals and wires for open circuit or potential open circuit. 4. Check wire
insulation and coating for damage, cracks and degrading. 5. Check conductive parts of terminals
for contact with other metallic parts (vehicle body and other parts). 6. Check grounding parts to
verify that there is complete continuity between attaching bolt(s) and vehicle body. 7. Check for
incorrect wiring. 8. Check that wires are clamped so as to prevent contact with sharp corners of the
vehicle body, etc. or hot parts (exhaust manifold, pipe, etc.) 9. Check that wires are clamped firmly
to secure enough clearance from the fan pulley, fan belt and other rotating or moving parts. 10.
Check that the wires between the fixed parts such as the vehicle body and the vibrating parts such
as the engine are made with adequate allowance
for vehicle vibrations.

Checking Fuses
CHECKING FUSES
A blade type fuse has test taps provided to allow checking of the fuse itself without removing it from
the fuse block. The fuse is okay if the test lamp comes on when its one lead is connected to the
test taps (one at a time) and the other lead is grounded. (Change the ignition switch position
adequately so that the fuse circuit becomes live.)
Service Points In Inspecting A Blown Fuse
Remove the fuse and measure the resistance between the load side of the fuse and ground. Set
the switches of all circuits which are connected to this fuse to a condition of continuity. If the
resistance is almost 0 W at this time, there is a short somewhere between these switches and the
load. If the resistance is not 0 W, there is no short at the present time, but a momentary short has
probably caused the fuse to blow.
The main causes of a short circuit are the following.
- Harness clamped by the vehicle body
- Damage to the outer casing of the harness due to wear or heat.
- Water getting into the connector or circuitry
- Human error (mistakenly shorting a circuit, etc.).
Disconnection of Battery Cables
Before disconnecting connectors or replacing electrical parts, disconnect the negative (-) battery
terminal.

How to Replace Terminals
Replacement
Use the appropriate tools to remove the terminal as shown. When installing the terminal, be sure to

connector.
Male
Insert a thin piece of metal from the terminal side of the connector, and with the terminal locking tab
pressed down, pull the terminal out from the connector.
Test Light
The test light, as shown in the figure, uses a 12 V bulb. The two lead wires should be connected to
probes.
The test light is used for simple voltage checks and for checking for short circuits.
NOTE: When checking the control unit, never use a bulb over 3.4W; to do so may cause damage
to the unit.
Jumper Wire
The jumper wire is used for testing by shorting across switch terminals and ground connections.
NOTE: Do not connect a jumper wire from the power source line to a body ground; this may cause
burning or other damage to the harnesses or the electronic components.

Page 59
Voltmeter
The DC voltmeter is used to measure circuit voltage. A voltmeter with a range of 15 V or more is
used by connecting the positive (+) probe to the point where voltage is to be measured and the
negative (-) probe to a body ground.
Ohmmeter
The ohmmeter is used to measure the resistance between two points in a circuit to check for
continuity, and in diagnosis of short circuits.
NOTE: Do not attempt to connect the ohmmeter to any circuit to which voltage is applied; this may
burn or otherwise damage the ohmmeter.

Subject A/T Adaptive Logic and Relearn Procedure
- Description
The transmission/transaxle computer uses logic to adjust solenoid duty and line pressure as
needed to compensate for normal clutch wear over the life of the transmission. The adaptive values
must be reset after replacing the transmission or reprogramming / replacing the PCM or TCM. After
the adaptive values are reset, the transmission computer adaptive values must be relearned by
driving in a precise manner to teach the computer the proper solenoid duty and line pressure for
the new transmission/computer combination. The relearn drive has two parts; dynamic for
upshifting/downshift and Static for shifting from P to D or R to D, etc.
Resetting Adaptive Values
1. Use Hi-Scan or GDS, go to the automatic transmission/transaxle section and select Resetting
Adaptive Values. (GDS users should select the System Option link from the Main Screen to access
the button for this function.)
2. (Hi-Scan Pro ONLY)With key on and engine off, push YES and then push RST (F1) button. You
must see the "Successful" message.
3. (GDS ONLY) Follow the prompts to reset the adaptive values. Confirm that the reset is
successful before continuing.
Adaptive Value Relearn
1. Dynamic Driving
Hook up the scan tool or GDS and bring ATF temp. just over 120 F (Middle Range) and drive from
a stop shifting from 1st - 3rd gears (five speeds-1st - 4th) at 30% TPS (Approx. shift RPM 3000).
Repeat 3 - 5 times until any shock or flare is eliminated.
Note:
2005 and later model year Sorento has a Sub-ROM in the transmission, the procedure is the same
as above except 8 - 12% TPS. It is extremely important that the TPS not exceed 12% during the
procedure or the complete relearn drive must be done again.
2. Static Shift
Stop vehicle and shift into N for three seconds. Shift to D for two seconds. Repeat 3 - 5 times until
there is no N > D shock.
Stop and shift into N for three seconds. Shift to R for two seconds. Repeat 3 - 5 times until there is
no N > R shock.
The adaptive logic reset and relearn is complete.

Subject: Automatic Transmission Adaptive Value Reset Relearn (Trans/Driveline - 018)
- Description
This bulletin provides automatic transmission adaptive value data reset (erase) and relearn
procedures.
The PCM and TCM contain logic to adjust the solenoid duty and line pressure to compensate for
normal clutch wear over the life of the transmission. Adaptive value reset and relearn must be
performed to provide optimum shift quality after completing the following repairs.
^ Replace automatic transmission
^ Replace PCM or TCM
Page 76
^ Reprogram PCM or TCM
Adaptive values must be reset using procedure 1 or 2 according to model and model year (MY) as
shown.
The adaptive values must also be relearned by following steps 2 and 3 after resetting.
- Effective Vehicle Information
All models supported by the table displayed above.
- Service Procedure
Perform the Automatic Transmission Adaptive Value Reset Procedure as follows:
Use the GDS or Hi-Scan Procedure to reset the automatic transmission adaptive values found in
the automatic transmission section menu. Follow the steps shown in RESETTING AUTO T/A
VALUES or INIT OF TCU LEARNING (Sorento - TCU SUB ROM RESET) menu sections
GDS Procedure:
