Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
If tapes are not being successfully mounted, dismounted, entered or ejected, there are some ways you can troubleshoot the problem with the Web-Based Library Administrator. The following are some examples:
é View the drive retry statistics in order to see the drive with the most retries, as well as the Element
ID, Row, and Column of the drive that is having the problem. To do this:
- Select STATS->DRIVES. Sort the columns of information by selecting the desired heading, such as Mount. The number of
mount retries can be sorted in either ascending or descending order, by clicking the heading and using the Up or Down triangle box. Once the sort is done, you will be able to see the drive with the most retries, and the Element ID, Row, and Column of the drive that is having the problem.
é View the cell retry statistics and the Cellmap to diagnose a hardware problem with the robotics. To
do this:
- Select STATS->CELLS. By sorting the Cell Retry Statistics columns and selecting the rows that show the highest
numbers of retries, you can then move to the Cellmap and those selected rows will appear as selected cells in the Cellmap. If they are clustered together, it could be an indication of a problem with the alignment or vision of the robot.
é View the Fault System Code (FSC) to determine if a field replaceable unit (FRU) may be causing
the error. To do this:
- Select Monitor->FSC LOG

Glossary
CAP
The cartridge access port (CAP) is an assembly that allows you to enter or eject cartridges to or from the library without interrupting normal library operations.
Cell
A slot in the tape library that is used to store a tape cartridge. The client software locates data cartridges by panel, column, row, and cell.
Client
This is the communications from the library to the processor.
Community
Each SNMP managed object belongs to a community. A community is defined by a community name. Once the community name is validated then agent or manager checks to see if sending address is permitted or has the rights for the requested operation.
Control Path
The communication pathway that allows the client to request operations and status information of the library.
Data Path
This communication pathway allows the drives to exchange data with the client.
Demo Loop
CAUTION: Audit update required: If DEMO MODE is interrupted, Get-Put Loop operations will
become disrupted, and cartridges may not be returned to their original locations. When DEMO MODE completes, you must IPL to re-audit the library, and your backup software applications . You must then notify the customer to update the host cartridge
database
é The Demo Mode (demonstration mode) tests the functionality of the robot. é When the library is in demonstration mode, the hand unloads a cartridge from a storage cell,
rotates around the Z and theta axes, and load the cartridge back to a different storage cell.
é The maximum number of loops is 2,000.
To set the Demo loop, select: MAINTENANCE->DIAGNOSTICS
Drive ID
The number that the library assigns the drive. This is an internal number only and is shown for information only.
.
Page 16
Drive SCSI ID
The SCSI address for the drive.
Drive States
Examples of valid drive states are:
Status Message Explanation INIT Required You must initialize this drive. Not Connected This drive is not connected to a SCSI bus. Drive Empty There are no cartridges in this drive. Unknown The library does not recognize the type of drive in this location.
Drive Type
Valid drive types are:
é DLT 8000 é 9840 é LTO Ultrium
Element ID
The element is a location or component inside the library. The element ID (or address) directs the robotic arm. The robotic arm responds to the SCSI element ID (or
address).
Ethernet Address
An Ethernet address is a unique number that is pre-assigned to the library. This address cannot be changed.
Expired Status
Cleaning cartridges have a limited life span. After multiple uses, a cleaning cartridge must be replaced and disposed of at your site.
Fast Load
Fast Load adjusts the robot’s timing during cartridge mount operations. Valid choices are:
é Enabled:
When enabled, the robot loads a tape into a drive, and then immediately performs its next task. It
does not wait for the tape drive to complete its mounting cycle.
é Disabled:
When disabled, the robot waits at the drive location until the tape is fully mounted before
beginning its next task.
Note: Some client software does not support the Fast Load feature. Consult your System Administrator before enabling this feature.
Firmware
Page 17
The firmware is the embedded software in the drive.
FSC
The 4-digit alphanumeric Fault System Code (FSC) generated by functional or diagnostic software that may directly or indirectly be used to indicate the field replaceable unit (FRU) which may be causing the error.
FSC Log
The Fault System Code (FSC) log is a list of library-generated messages, each of which relays a FSC and the time and date of the occurrence.
The GUI displays the last 20 events recorded for a library or drive. Events recorded are not necessarily errors.
Each entry includes the FSC, the drive affected, number of occurrences, and the date and time of the last occurrence.
Gateway
The gateway is a device that connects two computer networks that use different protocols. It translates between protocols so that computers on the connected networks can exchange data.
Get
A get is when the robotic hand unloads a cartridge from its storage cell.
Get-Put Loop
During the Get-Put loop, the hand loads and unloads a cartridge from a storage cell and places it into another location. This tests the functionality of the hand assembly.
The maximum number of loops allowed is 20.
ID
The SCSI ID (SCSI address) assigns the devices on the SCSI bus a unique electronic label. This label allows the client system to give instructions to a specific device.
é For UNIX workstations:
It is recommended that you use a dedicated SCSI client bus adapter. Valid entries are:
- 0 - 14 for wide SCSI adapters
- 0 - 6 for narrow SCSI ada pters
é For a SPARC:
Available addresses on the embedded system bus are 6, 5, 2, or 0 because the remaining addresses
are reserved for SUN peripherals.
é For IBM RISC System/6000 machines
Available addresses on the embedded system bus are 6, 5, 3, and 2.
IP Address
The Internet Protocol is a four-byte value that identifies a library and makes it accessible through a network.
Page 18
Label
é Also called volser. é Valid characters are A-Z, 0-9, # (crosshatch), or trailing blanks. é Leading blanks are not permitted.
Library Name
This is the assigned name that maps to the Internet Protocol (IP) address for a library. The library name is assigned by your system administrator.
Library Report
The library report function generates a report that consists of the following information:
é Library name é Library serial number é Number of CAPs in the library é Number of panels in the library é Number of drives é Library status, such as Ready é Revision information é Network settings é Device ID’s
Media Type
The valid media types are :
é DLT IV (DLT 8000) é 9840 é LTO Ultrium1 (LTO Ultrium)

The maximum number of loops allowed is 200.
Position
A position is the cell location by panel, row, and column.
Put
A put is when the robotic hand loads a cartridge into a storage cell.
Reserved Cells
The cells in the library in which only cleaning cartridges, diagnostic cartridges, or swapped data cartridges may reside. Only one of these cells is a swap cell.
Do not insert a data cartridge in a reserved cell, or the library will not see the cartridge.
Page 19
Resets
A reset starts an initial microcode program load to a library. During Resets (IPL), the library:
é initializes the robotic components é audits any cartridges in the storage cells é automatically verifies some configuration values, such as drive locations and drive types
A reset occurs when:
é The library is powered on é The main door is opened é The RESET button is pressed
Server
The server is a processor that runs an operating system and uses the library for data storage and retrieval.
SNMP
Simple Network Managment Protocol. The SNMP protocol contains the following:
é Each SNMP managed object belongs to a community. A community is defined by a community
name. Once the community name is validated then agent or manager checks to see if sending address is permitted or has the rights for the requested operation.
é A NMS (Network Managment station) may belong to multiple communities . é Each SNMP message consists of three components
- version number
- community name
- data
Sorting Capability
Columns of information in each screen with a table can be sorted in ascending or descending order. For example:
Monitor->FSC Log Sort the columns of information by selecting the desired heading, such as Occurrences. The number of
Occurrences can be sorted in either ascending or descending order, by clicking the heading and using the Up or Down triangle box. Once the sort is done, you will be able to easily view the highest number of occurrences of specific FSC’s, the mechanism on which they occurred, and when they occurred.
