GENERAL DESCRIPTIONGENERAL DESCRIPTION
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
GENERAL DESCRIPTIONGENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Hanna series of bench top electromagnetic
stirrers are designed with simplicity of use for
stirring and mixing solutions in a wide range of
laboratory applications. Eighteen models are
available in an extensive range covering:
• mini-stirrers
• general purpose stirrers
• dual-speed range
• inverse cycle stirring
• rpm indication
• pH/ºC measurement
• timer control
• constant speed with feedback control
All models employ a motorized magnet to rotate
a stirring bar to create a forced vortex rotational
flow in the solution with a constant angular
speed which is adjustable with an external
speed knob. Unlike conventional stirrers, all
Hanna stirrers use the concept of pulse-driven
drive to give the full power required to effectively stir the fluid regardless of the speed. This
eliminates the need to start the motor at high
speed and the user is now able to control the
speed precisely. Each stirrers is equipped with
an opto-sensor which monitor the speed and a
speed limiter circuit to prevent hazardous operation when the load is suddenly removed.
The power required to effectively stir a fluid is
influenced by the torque load on the stirrer
which, in turn, is dependent on the capacity,
type and viscosity of the fluid. The speed of the
stirrer decreases as the torque load increases
and vice versa, unless the power delivered
changes accordingly. For Newtonian fluids like
water, the viscosity remains constant during
stirring. The mini and normal stirrers are ideal
for Newtonian fluids.
6
istrstirR2.p65
7
The mini-stirrers (HI 30XN series) cater up to
2.5 litres. For some fluids like oil and clay, the
viscosity changes during the stirring process
and it is necessary to adjust the power to
maintain a constant speed during the stirring.
Hanna Auto-Speed stirrers (HI 31X series) are
designed with automatic feedback control to
maintain constant speed when the torque load
changes and are therefore ideal for stirring with
non-Newtonian fluids where the viscosity
changes during stirring. It is also ideal for
mixing applications where one solution is added
to another which changes the capacity and
thereby the torque load on the stirrer. The AutoSpeed stirrers maintain a constant stirring speed
during the mixing up to the full capacity of 5
litres. They can also be used with Newtonian
fluids up to a capacity of 5 litres.

Stirring Procedure:Stirring Procedure:
1. Make sure that the SPEED knob (B) and
the ON/OFF switch (L) are in the OFF
positions.
2. Place a beaker or glass container on top of
the stirrer and place the stirring bar at the
centre of the beaker base.
3. Pour the reagent to be titrated into the
beaker. Allow sufficient space for the titrant
to be added without spillage.
4. Connect power cable and switch on the
power supply. Then switch the stirrer on
which the ON/OFF switch. Attach the pH
electrode and temperature probe on the
electrode holder (optional accessory) and
adjust the holder so that pH electrode is at
the centre of the beaker. Set the OFF/ºC/pH
to pH to display pH measurement. You
should read the pH of the reagent compensated for the sample temperature.
7
8
5. Adjust the SPEED knob slowly until the
required stirring speed is achieved and allow
sufficient time to attain uniform rotational
flow.
6. Add the titrant through a burette and observe
the changes in pH value of the sample as
the titrant is being added. Switch the OFF/
ºC/pH to ºC to display the temperature of
the mixed sample if required.
7. When the titrant is completed, turn the
SPEED knob to off. If no further stirring is
required switch off the stirrer and disconnect
the power supply.

These reversible stirrers allow you to stir the
fluid in both directions and are ideal for powder
mixing applications to ensure a homogeneous
final product and complete dissolution of hardto-wet powders. The reverse stirring period is
adjustable from 30 sec. to 30 min. When set at
say 1 min., the fluid will rotate in one direction
for min. and then reverse its rotation for another
min. at the desired speed in a repeated cycle
until the stirrer is switched off.
13
Fig. 5
These Auto-Speed stirrers are equipped with
timer control to start and automatically stop the
stirring process after a duration which can be
preset from 5 min. to 2 hours and are ideal for
routine stirring applications where the required
stirring is known. They therefore free the
operator from constantly having to monitor the
stirring process.
14

As these are Auto-Speed stirrers with automatic feedback control, they are ideal for nonNewtonian fluids whose viscosities change
during stirring or Newtonian fluids up to 5 litres
capacity.
