Furuno FA100 UAIS Operator’s Manual
Addendum for FA100S “Silent Mode”
Enhancement
(Please Keep This Page With FA100 Operator’s Manual)
This Furuno FA100 has been software enhanced to provide an easily accessible
“Silent Mode” feature when required by the operator. The product designation of
this enhanced FA100 is the FA100S. THE “S” IS FOR SILENT!
Silent Mode is an operational state in the FA100S where the Radio Frequency (RF)
transmitter is disabled and the FA100 will act as an AIS Receiver Only. This
capability is designed to allow the Furuno FA100 to be used as a “See, But Not Be
Seen” device. Installation and usage of this enhanced FA100 should be restricted to
government or military applications where this feature is mandated.
This FA100S is completely USCG, MARAD, and MSC approved! It also strictly
complies with all applicable IMO and IEC requirements for an IMO Type Approved
UAIS CLASS A Transponder, except when Silent Mode is enabled. When Silent Mode
is turned on, the transmitter is completely disabled and the FA100S will not become
part of an AIS Vessel Network. It will however, continue to receive AIS data from all
other vessels in a given AIS network and provide this information to any compatible
device that is interfaced to the FA100S.
The operation and control of the FA100S remains virtually unchanged from the
standard FA100. The existing FA100 Installation and Operation Manuals should be
retained and referenced with the FA100S. Please refer to the brief instructions
below that explain how the Silent Mode Feature is enabled and disabled:
SILENT MODE KEY STROKES
To Enable/Disable FA100S Silent Mode: With the FA100S in Plotter Mode press [0]
and then [ENT] on the numeric keypad of the FA100S.
(Plotter Mode is one of the normal operational status modes of the FA100)
When the [0] key is pressed, the FA100S will prompt the operator to confirm the
request by pressing the [ENT] key. When the [ENT] key is pressed, the FA100S will
immediately toggle the SILENT MODE off or on depending on the current
operational state of the FA100S.
IN PLOTTER MODE: [0]→[ENT] (SILENT MODE ON/OFF)
Please note that the current operational status (SILENT or TX MODE) is continuously
displayed in the lower corner of the Plotter Mode screen and in the Main Menu
screen as well. This feature provides a quick visual confirmation of the current
FA100S status to the operator at any time.
