STARTING THE ENGINE
Turn the ignition key to MAR and position the gear lever in (P) or (N).
STARTING OFF
With car at a standstill, idle the engine and press the brake pedal, select the required position and accelerate gradually: the car will start off and the gear ratios will be selected according to the selected gear lever position.
USING THE SPEEDGEAR AUTOMATIC
GEARBOX
The engine can only be started with the gear lever at either (P) or (N).
The following gear shifts (P-R; R-P; N-R) are protected from accidental engagement by means of a safety lock. Consequently, these positions can only be engaged as follows:
car at a standstill;
ignition key at MAR;
press the brake pedal;
press button (A) while you are shifting the lever.

SEQUENTIAL OPERATION
From (D) shift the lever to the left:
shift the lever towards + to engage a higher gear;
shift the lever towards – to engage a lower gear.
Each gear shift and driving mode selected is shown on the display. The sequential gear shift is similar to that of a fixed ratio gearbox controlled in sequence: 6 ratios are provided.
The electronic control system intervenes by varying the ratios when the engine ratio exceeds or drops under a certain rpm threshold.
AUTOMATIC OPERATION
(D) from position (L) and from sequential operation can be selected in any conditions without pressing button (A).
The gearbox will select higher gears when the demand for engine power is low, thus ensuring lower consumption. The gearbox will hold the lower gears as the request for power is gradually increased to offer good pick-up and acceleration.
F0I0029m
The electronic control unit will cut out sequential operation activating automatic operation only if the gearbox oil temperature is excessively high. Sequential operation will be restored as soon as the regular working temperature is reached.

USING THE SPEEDGEAR AUTOMATIC
GEARBOX
Low (L)
In (L) the gearbox mainly engages low forward gears to optimise the engine brake and to offer the possibility of sporty driving up or downhill.
(L) can be selected also when the car is moving. Consequently, it can be used to slow down from any speed. Top engine brake effectiveness is obtained at speeds lower than 90 km/h. Using the car at (L) and exploiting the sporty driving that this feature offers will increase fuel consumption.
To shift the lever from (N), remove your foot from the accelerator pedal and wait for the engine to stabilise at idle. Follow the instructions and important notes given in the "Starting off" paragraph above.
Only engage reverse when the car is stationary, the engine is idling and the pedal is fully released. Follow the instructions and important notes given in the "Starting off" paragraph above.

Parking (P)
In (P) the drive wheels are mechanically locked. Engage this position only when the car is stationary. Pull the handbrake as required. Follow the instructions and important notes given in the "Starting off" paragraph above.
In an emergency, you can shift the lever from (P) by manually disengaging the locking device.
Use the screwdriver provided to release the lock (see the figure) located near the ignition key under the steering column upholstery and remove the ignition key at the same time.
STOPPING THE CAR
Release the accelerator pedal and press the brake pedal. Keep the car still when on a slope and the engine is running with the brake pedal only. Do not press the accelerator pedal.
For longer stops, shift the lever to (P) and follow the instructions and important notes given in the "Starting off" paragraph above.

MAINTENANCE SERVICE SCHEDULE
The Service Schedule envisages Speedgear automatic transmission oil level check every 20,000 km and oil change every 40,000 km (or every 3 years, without replacing the filter).
CHECKING OIL LEVEL
CHECKING THE SPEEDGEAR AUTOMATIC GEARBOX OIL LEVEL
Check the gearbox oil level with the specific dipstick in the engine compartment. The dipstick hole is the filler to be used for topping up, if required. Make sure that the oil level is always included between the two reference lines MIN and MAX (H and C), on the dipstick. Frequent topups possibly indicate a leak. Have the car checked by a Fiat Dealership.
Cold check
Before starting off, with the engine idling and the car on level ground, the oil level on the dipstick should reach the reference line next to the word C.
Hot check
Check the oil level on the dipstick after driving at least 10 km with the engine idling and the car on level ground. The level should reach the reference line with the word H.

Press the brake pedal
Start the engine
Move the gear lever (A) to + (UP) to engage the first gear or to R to
engage reverse
Release the brake pedal and press the accelerator pedal
When running move the gear lever (A) to + (UP) for upshifting or to –
(DOWN) for downshifting.
Automatic mode
Press the brake pedal
Start the engine
Move the gear lever (A) to A/M to engage the automatic mode or to R
to engage reverse
Release the brake pedal and press the accelerator pedal.

OPERATION
The gearbox can work in two operating modes:
the first mode is manual (MANUAL): the driver directly requests
gearshifting;
the second mode is automatic (AUTO): the system directly decides
when shifting gears. With this operating logic it is possible to activate the ECO (Economy) function to contain consumption by pressing button (E) on the gearbox mask.
To shift gears and to select the operating mode (MANUAL or AUTO) use the gear lever (A) set on the central console (see figure).

GEAR LEVER
The gear lever (A) is of the floating “multi-stable position” type, i.e.: it features three stable positions and three unstable ones.
The three stable positions correspond to neutral (N), reverse (R) and central position set between the unstable positions UP (+) and DOWN (–) (see figure).
Unstable positions (i.e.: positions abandoned as soon as the gear lever is released), are the upshifting position UP (+), the downshifting position DOWN (–) and the automatic mode position (A/M).
To return to manual mode, set the gear lever back to A/M.
With the car stationary and the key removed, it is possible to shift the lever with/without the brake pedal pressed. The system will perform no actuation when shifting the lever and the gear engaged will be the one stored before removing the ignition key.
IMPORTANT With the engine off and the car stationary, any error between lever position and gear engaged is indicated by è warning light coming on for a few seconds on the instrument panel together with the message on the reconfigurable multifunction display.
Page 21
USING THE SPEEDGEAR AUTOMATIC
GEARBOX
20
MANUAL OPERATION (MANUAL)
In this operating mode, the decision to change gear is left to the driver who decides the most appropriate moment.
To change gears in MANUAL operating mode proceed as follows:
move lever to + (UP) to engage higher gear;
or
move lever to – (DOWN) to engage lower gear.
The system will cut in automatically preventing gearshifting only if the request to change gear will impair regular engine and transmission operation; the system will also shift down gears automatically when the engine (e.g.: at slowing down).
In the same way, the system will engage a higher gear if the engine reaches high rpm.
The system will warn the driver that the required gear will not be engaged through the sound of the buzzer and a dedicated message on the reconfigurable multifunction display (see paragraph “Warning lights and messages”).
USING THE DUALOGIC
GEARBOX
Page 22
USING THE SPEEDGEAR AUTOMATIC
GEARBOX
21
AUTOMATIC OPERATION (AUTO)
For engaging/disengaging the automatic operating mode (AUTO), move lever (A) to A/M: automatic mode activation is indicated by message AUTO and gear engaged on the reconfigurable multifunction display (see figure).
With AUTO mode active, the system decides to change gear depending on car speed, engine rpm and how the accelerator pedal is pressed (brake pedal if braking).
In this mode, the driver can shift gears depending on how the accelerator pedal is pressed (kick down function): in this case it will be possible to kickdown by one or more gears to obtain optimum acceleration (for example when overtaking).
In AUTO mode it is however possible to change gears with the control lever without deactivating the automatic mode; this function called "gear advice", suspends the AUTO mode for the time required to change gear and for the next 4 seconds (the display will show AUTO). The system will then resume automatically the AUTO logic.

Automatic operation (AUTO - ECO)
The ECO function can be activated only with automatic mode active. To activate the ECO function press button (E) set on the mask near the
gearshift lever. After activating this function, the reconfigurable multifunction display shows the gear engaged and words AUTO and E (see figure).
With ECO function active the system will select the most suitable gear (according to car speed, engine rpm and how the accelerator pedal is pressed) to save as much fuel as possible.
If necessary (e.g.: overtaking) the system will change gears in order to provide suitable torque and power for acceleration (this will take place in automatic mode regardless of ECO function condition, ON or OFF). In this way engine rpm will suddenly increase, excluding temporarily the ECO function that will be automatically resumed when returning to the previously set conditions.

WARNING
After a request to shift gear with the car stationary, before pressing the accelerator pedal to make the car move, the driver must always check the reconfigurable multifunction display to see that the gear engaged is the one required.
SHIFTING GEARS
Proceed as follows:
move lever to + (UP) to engage higher gear;
or
move lever to – (DOWN) to engage lower gear;
To engage neutral (N) move the lever rightwards and then up, to engage reverse (R) move the lever rightwards and then down.
With the engine off, key to MAR and the car stationary it is possible to engage all the gears.
IMPORTANT Before using the gearshift lever, always check the gear engaged on the reconfigurable multifunction display (N,1,2,3,4,5,R).
IMPORTANT Once a gear has been changed it is necessary to immediately release the gearshift lever. A prolonged manoeuvre (over 12 seconds) makes the buzzer sound and the system switching automatically to AUTO; everything stops releasing the gearshift lever.
IMPORTANT When parking the car on a sloping road and engaging a gear to keep it braked, always check that the display shows the new gear engaged and wait (after turning the key to STOP) for 1 or 2 seconds before releasing the brake pedal to allow a complete engagement of the clutch.

Neutral (N) engagement/disengagement
To engage neutral (N) when travelling release the accelerator pedal: the neutral command is accepted only with car speed below 80 km/h., With speed exceeding 80 km/h the system will refuse neutral command and it will keep the current gear engaged. The reconfigurable multifunction display will show the message “Operation Not Allowed” (see paragraph “Warning lights and messages”). Buzzer will also sound.
It is not possible to engage neutral pressing the accelerator pedal: in this case the system will keep the current gear engaged and the reconfigurable multifunction display will show the message “Operation Not Allowed” (see paragraph “Warning lights and messages”). Buzzer will also sound.
With the car moving, to disengage neutral (N), move the lever to central position without pressing the brake pedal: the system will automatically engage the best gear in relation to engine rpm/car speed and the reconfigurable multifunction display will show the operating logic mode active and the gear engaged.

Reverse (R) engagement/disengagement
Reverse can only be engaged in the following cases:
brake pedal pressed;
car almost at standstill.
With reverse engaged, the reconfigurable multifunction display will show the operating mode and logic active and pictogram (R).
When trying to engage reverse (R) without pressing the brake pedal at a speed of approx. 10 km/h, the system will automatically engage neutral (N) and the reconfigurable multifunction display will show message “Push Brake Pedal - Repeat Operat.”.
When trying to engage reverse (R) with car speed exceeding 10 km/h, the system will refuse to change gear and the reconfigurable multifunction display will show message “Operation Not Allowed”. The system will refuse to change gear and the reconfigurable multifunction display will show the operating mode and logic active and the current gear engaged (in addition to the above message), buzzer will also sound.
Stopping the car (with gearshift lever to R), the system will automatically engage neutral (N).
IMPORTANT With brake pedal pressed, reverse can be engaged only if the car stops within 3 seconds.

gear (1) without pressing the brake pedal with speed below 10 km/h the reconfigurable multifunction display will show the message:
“Push Brake Pedal - Repeat Operat.”: the system
will refuse to change gear, will engage neutral (N) and the reconfigurable multifunction display will show the operating mode and logic active and pictogram “N” (in addition to the above message). Buzzer will also sound.
When trying to engage 1
st
gear with brake pedal pressed and car speed exceeding 10 km/h, the reconfigurable multifunction display will show the following message:
“Operation Not Allowed”: the system will refuse to
change gear and the reconfigurable multifunction display (in addition to the above message) will show the operating mode and logic active and pictogram “R” (current gear engaged). Buzzer will also sound.
SWITCHING OFF THE ENGINE AND SYSTEM DEACTIVATION
Turning the ignition key to STOP the engine turns off but the system is still active.
After about 2-4 seconds from when the key has been moved to STOP, the hydraulic part is deactivated and the reconfigurable multifunction display is turned off immediately afterwards; only at this point is the system deactivated.
The gear selected before switching off the engine remains engaged.
If the engine is stopped with the gearbox in neutral (N) the buzzer calls the driver’s attention so that the car can be put in safety conditions engaging 1
st
gear (1) or reverse (R). In this case, the ignition key should be turned to MAR and with the brake pedal pressed, engage 1stgear (1) or reverse (R).

IMPORTANT Should the engine go off with the car on the move, the next time it is started the instrument panel warning light Y may come on. In this case check that the warning light Y goes off turning the engine off and on again with the car stationary: if not contact Fiat Dealership.
FAILURE INDICATION
System failures are shown by instrument panel warning light t (together with the message on the reconfigurable multifunction display) (see paragraph “Warning lights and messages”).
In the event of a failure:
buzzer will sound intermittently;
automatic mode (AUTO) will automatically be
engaged (for certain types of failures), to allow driving to the nearest Fiat Dealership to have the fault eliminated.
For certain faults, the system only allows the engagement of certain gears: first gear (1), second gear (2) and reverse (R).
Turn the engine off (with system deactivation as a consequence) keeping the brake pedal pressed: release the pedal ONLY when the reconfigurable multifunction display goes off.
WARNING
Never remove the ignition key when the car is moving. In addition to the fact that the system would not work properly up to stopping the car, the steering wheel would lock automatically the first time it is turned.

BUZZER WARNINGS
The buzzer is activated when:
the car is parked with the gearbox in neutral (N)
(signal that can be noted turning the ignition key to STOP);
clutch overheating occurs while the car is being
started (in this case it is necessary to “force” starting avoiding hesitation or, if the car is on a slope, release the accelerator and use the brake pedal to stop the car;
Still due to safety reasons, with the car stationary, the engine running and gear (1), (2) or (R) engaged, the system activates the buzzer and automatically shifts to neutral (N) when:
no action is made on the accelerator and/or brake
pedals for at least 3 minutes;
the brake is pressed for over 10 minutes;
the driver’s door is opened and the accelerator and
brake are not touched for at least 3 seconds;
a gearbox failure has been detected.
PARKING THE CAR
To park the car safely it is absolutely necessary to press the brake pedal and to engage first gear or reverse (R) and also the hand brake if the car is on a slope; it is also absolutely necessary to wait for the reconfigurable multifunction display showing the gear engaged to go off before releasing the brake pedal.
IMPORTANT Never leave the car with gearbox in neutral (N).
STOPPING THE CAR
To stop the car, release the accelerator pedal and, if necessary, press the brake pedal. With the car on uphill slope and the engine running, use the brake pedal only; do not press the accelerator.
Regardless of the gear engaged and the operating mode active, the system automatically disengages the clutch and shifts to a lower gear.
Stopping the car the system automatically engages 1
st
gear (1).

SYSTEM SAFETY
The system features some automatic/security devices which simplify driving:
when slowing down the transmission ratio is
automatically reduced to be ready for picking up again; otherwise, when the car is stopped, the gearbox will automatically be in 1
st
gear;
if the engine reaches the maximum permissible
speed and accelerating continues (without the cutting in of the ESP system (where provided), the system automatically engages a higher gear;
cutting in of the ESP system (where provided), at
engine peak rpm will inhibit gear shifting (gears can be only engaged by operating the gearshift lever);
with car at a standstill, pedals released, engine
running and gear engaged, 3 seconds after opening the driver’s door, the system will automatically engage neutral (N) to prevent accidental car movement.
IMPORTANT It is advisable to wait for the end of a gear shifting operation before requesting another one, to avoid multiple requests in rapid succession.

IMPORTANT NOTES
With the car stopped and a gear engaged always
keep the brake pedal pressed until deciding to move off, then release the brake pedal and accelerate gradually;
during prolonged halts with the engine running it is
advisable to keep the gearbox in neutral (N);
when the car is parked facing uphill, to safeguard
clutch efficiency do not use the accelerator to keep the car still since clutch overheating could damage it. Use the brake pedal and press the accelerator pedal only when deciding to move off;
use second gear (2) only when more control is
needed for moving off manoeuvres with poor grip;
if, in reverse gear (R), first gear (1) is engaged or
vice versa, shift gear only when the car is stopped completely and with the brake pedal pressed;
though highly inadvisable, if when travelling downhill
for some unexpected reason the car is set to neutral (N), when the engagement of a gear is requested, the system automatically engages the best gear in relation to the speed of the car to allow the correct transmission of torque to the wheels;
when travelling downhill with a gear engaged and
the accelerator released (if the car is moving), beyond a pre-established speed, the system engages the clutch automatically to give the car adequate engine braking.
