Installing the Ribbon Cassette
Use the EPSON ERC-27 ribbon cassette for your printer. The use of
any ribbon cassettes other than those approved by EPSON may
damage the printer and will void the warranty.
1. Turn on the power of the base unit.
2. If you replace the ribbon cassette during printing, press the
RELEASE button so that the printer is in the paper release mode.
3. Be sure the printer is not receiving data when you replace a
ribbon cassette; otherwise data may be lost.
4. Open the slip cover by slightly pressing the ridges on the top
left and pulling the cover forward.

5. Turn the ribbon knob two or three times in the direction of the
arrow to take up any slack in the ribbon.

CAUTION:
Never turn the ribbon knob in the opposite direction of the
arrow marked on the cassette; otherwise the ribbon cassette
may be damaged.

6. Insert the ribbon cassette in the printer by holding the tab and
turn the knob two or three times. Make sure that the ribbon is
installed below the printer head without wrinkles or creases.
The instruction label inside the cover will help you to install the
ribbon cassette.
7. Put the cover back on the printer and close it until it clicks into
place.
Installing the Paper Rolls

Note:
Use a paper roll that matches the printer's specifications. See page 12 for
paper specifications.
Label paper cannot be used.
Do not pull the paper out when the printer cover is closed.
Do not touch the thermal elements with any metal objects or your fingers.
Do not open the paper roll cover when printing.
Do not use the paper rolls that have the paper glued to the core.
1. Make sure that the printer is not receiving data; otherwise, data
may be lost.
2. Make sure that the edge of the paper is straight.

3. Open the paper roll cover using the tab on the left side of the
printer; then install the paper roll and pull a small amount of
the paper forward. Be sure to note the correct direction that the
paper comes off the roll.

4. Close the cover and tear off the paper with the manual cutter.
Note:
Be sure to open or close the cover gently; otherwise a problem may occur
on the base unit.
Inserting Slip Paper
Note:
Be sure the slip is flat, without curls, folds, or wrinkles.
Paper may become ink stained if it remains in the printer for a long time.
Printing without paper loaded and/or without a ribbon cassette mounted
must not be performed.
The ribbon cassette should be mounted with the printer released.
1. Make sure that a ribbon cassette is installed in the printer.
2. Make sure the power of the base unit is turned on.
3. Press the RELEASE button. The RELEASE LED comes on, which
indicates that the printer is in the paper release mode. In this
mode, the printer can accept paper and paper can be removed
from it.

4. Insert the paper from either the front or the side, as shown in
the illustration below. Insert the paper into the printer until it is
stopped by the form stopper. The markings on the side of the
printer can also be used to judge how far to insert paper.
Self Test
The self test lets you know if your printer is operating properly. It
checks the control circuits, printer mechanisms, print quality, ROM
version, and DIP switch settings. If the printer is not attached to the
base unit, the self test cannot be executed.

Running the self test with a paper roll
1. Make sure that the base unit is turned off and the paper roll
and slip covers are closed properly.
2. While holding down the FEED button of the printer, turn on the
base unit to begin the self test. The self test prints the printer
settings and then prints the following, cuts the paper, and
pauses.
If you want to continue SELF-TEST printing,
please press FEED button.
3. Press the FEED button to continue printing. The printer prints a
pattern using the built-in character set.
4. The self test automatically ends and cuts the paper after
printing the following:

The printer is ready to receive data as soon as it completes the self
test.
Note:
If you want to pause the self test manually, press the FEED button. Press
the FEED button again to continue the self test.
Running the self test with slip paper
1. Make sure that the base unit is turned off, the paper roll and
slip covers are closed properly, and the ribbon cassette is
installed correctly.
2. While holding down the REVERSE button, turn on the base unit
to begin the self test. (The SLIP LED flashes.)
3. Feed a sheet of slip paper into the printer. The printer loads the
paper automatically, prints the printer settings, and then ejects
the paper.
4. Remove the paper from the printer and feed another sheet of
slip paper into the printer. The printer prints a pattern using
the built-in character set. Continue to feed slip paper into the
printer until the self test prints the following:
*** completed ***
The printer is ready to receive data as soon as it completes the self
test.
Note:
If you want to pause the self test manually, press the REVERSE button.
Press the REVERSE button again to continue the self test.
Troubleshooting
CAUTION:
Do not touch the thermal head because it can be very hot after
printing continuously for a long time.
Error LED on or flashing.
Make sure that the paper roll cover is properly closed.
Check if a slip is inserted when printing on a roll paper. If so,
remove the slip paper.

Turn off the power of the base unit, open the paper roll cover; then
check for a paper jam.
The autocutter is jammed or the paper roll cover cannot be opened.
If the autocutter does not return to its normal position by itself,
follow the steps below:
1. Turn off the power of the base unit.
2. To open the autocutter cover, slide it to the left.

3. Turn the knob until you see a triangle in the opening. This
returns the cutter blade to the normal position. Also notice that
there is a label near the cutter to assist you.

Note:
Do not open the autocutter cover unless the paper roll cover will not open.
The printer sounds like it is printing, but nothing is printed.
The ribbon cassette may be worn out or not installed properly. Reinstall or replace it as described in this manual.

Adjusting the Paper Near End Detector
The paper near end detector detects when paper is almost gone by
measuring the diameter of the paper roll. The detector has two
settings.
Note:
Roll paper should be of specified paper type and should have an inner
diameter (core diameter) of 12 mm {0.472 in.}and an outer diameter of 18
mm {0.709 in.}.
If you want more paper leftwhen the detector is triggered, change
the setting, as described below.
1. Open the paper roll cover, and remove the paper roll.
2. Loosen the adjusting screw with a coin, and carefully move the
detecting lever up.

3. Tighten the adjusting screw, and check to be sure that the
detecting lever moves freely.
4. Replace the paper roll.

Cleaning the Thermal Head
CAUTION:
After printing, the head can be very hot. Be careful not to
touch it. Also let it cool before you clean it. Do not damage
the head by touching it with your fingers or any metal object.
To maintain the print quality, clean the head periodically
(generally every three months), following the steps below.
1. Turn off the power.
2. Open the paper roll cover, and clean the thermal element of the
head with a cotton swab moistened with an alcohol solvent
(ethanol, methanol, or IPA).

3. Close the cover, and turn on the power after the alcohol is
completely dried.
Note:
Depending on the roll paper used, paper dust may stick to the platen roller
and the paper roll end sensor. To remove the paper dust, clean the platen
roller and paper roll end sensor with a cotton swab moistened with water.
