1. IMPORTANT NOTE
Congratulations! You are the owner of a carefully designed and manufactured equipment. We thank you for
trusting on us and choosing our amplifier XPA.
In order to obtain maximum operativity and perfect functioning order, it is most important to carefully read all
considerations taken into account in this manual before connecting this amplifier.
We recommend our authorised Technical Services if any maintenance task should be needed so that
optimum operation shall be achieved.
1.1. Precautions
The XPA11000/7000/5000/3000 amplifiers have a power consumption of 1230, 775, 675 and 575 VA (at
1/8 of maximum power output, as specified by regulation EN 55103-1). We recommend a 2.5mm
2
(or bigger) wire
cross-section and a magnetothermic circuit breaker that can handle at least 10A@230VAC for
XPA3000/5000,15A@230VAC for XPA7000 and 25A for XPA11000) (These values are for one amplifier).
The amplifier should have an earth connection in good conditions (earth resistance, Rg=30Ω or less). The
environment must be dry and dustless. Do not expose the unit to rain or water splashes, and do not place liquid
containers or incandescent objects like candles on top of the unit. Do not obstruct the ventilation shafts with any
kind of material. In case there is some type of intervention and/or connection-disconnection of the amplifier, it is most
important to previously disconnect the mains power supply.
Do not manipulate the output terminals to the loudspeakers when the amplifier is switched on, there are
voltages up to 400Vpp. The output cabling should be connected by a qualified technician. Otherwise only
use pre-made flexible cables. There are no user or serviceable parts inside the amplifier.
2. INTRODUCTION
High efficiency mosfet amplifier.
Ecler XPA Power amplifier series offers the renowned professional reliability of all Ecler amplifiers at an
affordable price. The line consists of four models with power outputs of 300, 500, 700 and 1100 W per channel at
4Ω. All models employ mosfet amplification technology, are 2 rack units high and are based on a robust chassis
with aluminium front panel. Thanks to their oversized power supply, these amplifiers can operate comfortably with
4Ω and even 2Ω loads.
They feature balanced input connections via XLR3 and 1/4’’ Jacks. The outputs offer total versatility thanks
to secure connection posts with standardized separation and Speakon® sockets. An electronic limiting system for
avoiding signal overloads and a switchable subsonic filter are also on board.
2.1. Main features:
- Highly effective progressive cooling system. Air flow rises as a function of amplifier temperature. “Back to
Front” cooling system takes air from the rear and throws it out at the front panel.
- Easily accessible input attenuation controls on the front panel may be locked with Ecler exclusive system.
- Indicators for Signal Present (SP), Clipping (CLIP) and activation of protection circuits (PROT)
- Effective protection systems against short-circuit, excessive temperature due to accidental blocking of air
flow or other circumstances, DC at the output… to protect the amplifier and loudspeakers.
- Built-in, always active anticlip circuit
- Switchable subsonic filter, 30 Hz 18dB/oct slope
- Operating mode selector: STEREO, PARALLEL and BRIDGE
- Input sensitivity selector (0.775, 1, 1,4V)
- Balanced inputs via XLR3 and 6,35mm TRS Jack sockets
- Outputs on connection posts and Speakon® connectors
- Operation with 8, 4 and 2Ω or 4Ω in bridged mode.
- 2 years warranty

3. INSTALLATION
3.1. Placement, mounting, cooling
All XPA amplifier models are presented in standard 19” rack format and are 2 units high.
It is important that the amplifier, as a heat source, is not placed next to other equipment nor exposed to
high temperatures. Therefore, the ventilation path should be kept free to allow fresh air entering the forced
ventilation tunnel. This system takes air from the unit's backside, bringing it directly to the power amp modules and
distributing it to the transformer and capacitors and then obliging it to pass trough the cooling tunnel to finally blow
out of the front panel. In case of rack mounting, this system avoids heat accumulation inside the unit and thus
increases lifetime of electrolytic capacitors. It is recommended to place power amplifiers on top of other equipment
and not underneath.
3.2. Mains connection
The XPA amplifiers are fed with alternate currents, depending on the country, of 110-120, 220-240V
47/63Hz. (see characteristics in the back of the unit).
The mains cables must not be near the shielded cables carrying the audio signal, as this could cause
humming.
In order to protect the power amplifier from eventual power consumption overloads it is protected by a set
of internal fuses. Should a fuse blow, it must be replaced immediately by one with identical rating. Should it blow
again please contact our Technical Service Department. NEVER REPLACE THE FUSE WITH ANOTHER ONE
WITH A HIGHER VALUE.
CAUTION: Fuse substitutions have to be performed by a qualified technician.
3.3. Input signal connections
The signal input connectors are of XLR-3 and 1/4’’ TRS Jack type (7,8) and electronically balanced. The
pin assignment is as follows:
XLR-3 JACK
Hot or direct signal > Pin 2 Tip
Cold or phase inverted signal > Pin 3 Ring
Ground > Pin 1 Sleeve
For an unbalanced connection, short pin 3 to ground (XLR) or the ring to ground (Jack).
The input impedance in balanced mode is 20kΩ (10kΩ non-balanced). This impedance makes possible to
parallel several amplifiers without losing audio quality. Input sensitivity can be selected via a switch placed on the
back panel (9) Selectable values are 0.775V / 1V / 1.4V
3.4. Subsonic filter
This filter cuts off inaudible frequency components which when amplified suppose a risk of damage to the
low frequency speakers as they generate excessive excursions of the woofer's diaphragm. The filter of the XPAs,
which has a Butterworth shaped response with 18 dB/oct slope, has a cut-off frequency of 30 Hz and can be
switched on or off via a switch on the rear panel (11).
Subsonic filters are very important when playing back vinyl records because the phono cartridges are
specially sensitive to feedback and acoustic coupling at very low frequencies.
6
3.5. Limiter circuit
This system is an always active protection inside the XPA series of amplifiers. The ANTICLIP circuitry
constantly analyses harmonic distortion caused by excessive signal excursion at the power amplifier's output and
automatically reduces the input level in order never to exceed 0,5% total harmonic distortion.
The great convenience of such a circuit in any kind of installation has to be remarked: The clear advantage
of a limiting system in front of conventional compressors is that the former does practically not alter the dynamic
range, acting only when the distortion threshold is reached.
3.6. Output connections
See diagram 6.1 for output connection possibilities
The output section on the rear panel features both Speakon® connectors (13) and threaded connection
posts (14).
If you need to operate the amplifier in BRIDGED mode, you should place the “MODE” (10) switch in
BRIDGE position. Input signal should be fed into Channel 1 of the amplifier and the output appears at the 2+ and 2-
pins of the Speakon® connector and/or at the red connection posts.
ATTENTION: Terminals 1+ and 1- should only be used in case of “STEREO” or “PARALLEL” mode and
terminals 2+ and 2- in “BRIDGED” mode. Any other combination may impair final audio quality
When operating in BRIDGED mode, always make sure that the resulting load impedance of the installation
is never below 4Ω.
The connection cable that joins the amplifiers outputs and the loudspeakers must be of good quality,
sufficient section and as short as possible. This is most important when the distances to cover are long ones i.e. up
to 10 meters it is recommended to use a section not inferior to 2.5mm
2
and for superior distances 4mm
2
.
4. OPERATION AND USAGE
4.1. Start up
Pushing the switch button (5) lights up the integrated pilot light and both red "PROT" (4) LEDs during the
approximately 10 seconds needed to stabilize all voltages. The "PROT" LEDs will then turn off meaning that the
amplifier is now operative.
In a complete audio installation, it is important to start up the equipment in the following sequence: sound
sources, mixer, equalizers, active filters and finally power amplifiers. To turn them off the sequence should follow
an inverse pattern.
4.2. Input attenuators
This consists of rotative potentiometers, situated on the front panel (1).
These attenuators enable the connection of different types of mixing tables, independent regulation level
and loudspeaker connections that allow an inferior power level that the level already supplied by the power
amplifier at its maximum power, with no danger of damaging, by careless handling, the volume of the pre-amplified
mixer.
Inside the device's packaging you will find a little plastic bag containing 2 transparent caps which protect
the input attenuation settings from unwanted manipulation. These caps are transparent in order to let you visualize
the current settings.
Once inserted, they cannot be removed with bare fingers, for this purpose, a small screwdriver is needed.
7
4.3. Indicators
XPA amplifiers include a simple yet effective indication system.
PROT indicators (4) show the absence of loudspeaker output signal. These indicators may light up for
following reasons:
1. During start-up, until the STANDBY time has passed. This time period is needed for the internal
operating voltages to settle.
2. A short circuit is detected at the loudspeaker terminals.
3. The amplifier is outputting direct current or very low frequency signals that could damage the
loudspeaker.
In any case, should these indicators light permanently, this is a sign of malfunction and the causes should
be investigated.
The clip indicators (3) light up just before the actual clipping threshold at the loudspeaker output is reached.
The clip detection circuit considers supply voltage oscillations, so that a dependable clip reading is achieved, even
when operating with unstable mains voltage. It is usual that the CLIP indicators shine following the bass
frequencies when the amplifier operates at high power levels, as these frequencies carry the main energy. Take
care that the CLIP indicators are not permanently lit.
Signal presence indicators SP (2) show the presence of a signal at the amplifier inputs. They light up when
the input level is greater than -40dB.
5. CLEANING
The front panel should not be cleaned with dissolvent or abrasive substances because silk-printing could
be damaged. To clean it, use a soft cloth slightly wet with water and neutral liquid soap; dry it with a clean cloth. Be
careful that water never gets into the amplifier through the holes of the front panel.
