The Detcon SW-AV1-N4 Alarm Station is a wireless, AC powered alarm station with battery backup. The
unit is designed to meet NEMA4 water tight, dust tight requirements.
Figure 1 Basic N4 Wireless Alarm Station
The alarm station can be positioned almost anywhere with only the need for an AC Power Source.
Communication is performed via the Detcon RXT-320 series transceiver. Access to the unit is only necessary
for battery maintenance or exchange. The unit consists of a 15V Power Supply, a 12V 2900mAh battery, an
RL4 I/O Module for alarm control, a transceiver for network communication, a Strobe, and a Horn.
1.1Strobe
The alarm station strobe is configured with choice of dome colors such as amber, blue, clear, green, magenta,
or red. The strobes are rated NEMA4 and utilize a Strobe Guard, and gasket to complete the NEMA4 rating.
The strobes produce 2.2 joules of energy while drawing relatively low current and have a flash rate of 60~80
per second.

1.2Horn
This range of light weight all GRP, flameproof sounders is intended for use in potentially explosive gas and
dust atmospheres and has been designed with high ingress protection to cope with the harsh environmental
conditions found offshore and onshore in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries. The Horn is rated for
C1D2 Groups A, B, C, and D locations, is UL, cUL listed, and ATEX approved. The Horn has the ability to
produce up to 118dBA output.

1.3Smart Battery Pack
SmartWireless® Alarm Station is powered by an internal 15VDC Power Supply and a rechargeable Smart
Battery Pack. If there is a loss of AC the battery pack is capable of delivering continuous operation in a no
alarm condition for up to eight weeks. The internal battery pack is recharged by the use of the power supply.
The battery pack consists of rechargeable Lithium-Ion batteries and is equipped with integrated safety
electronics that include fuel gauge, voltage, current and temperature monitoring circuits. This “smart”
circuitry continuously monitors the battery’s condition and reports critical status information to the wireless
transceiver. Improper use of the battery pack may be hazardous to personnel or the environment and will void
the warranty.
1.4RXT Series Wireless Transceivers
The wireless function of the alarm station is made possible by Detcon’s RXT-320 series wireless transceiver.
They operate at 2.4GHz and conform to non-licensed radio frequency appliance usage around the
world. Wireless network integrity and security is accomplished using direct sequence spread spectrum
wireless mesh technology. Every device in the network is capable of functioning as a router and repeater for
all other devices in the network. This means that subscribers can “hop” through neighboring devices to
communicate with each other thereby widening network access points. This unique and innovative technology
is designed to create a robust network that automatically routes around congestion and line-of-sight obstacles
while improving throughput as subscriber device density increases.

The radio module is housed in a black ABS box mounted inside the alarm station enclosure. The package
includes two PCAs mounted inside the black ABS box (radio PCA and Smart battery charging PCA). The
battery PCA includes circuitry to safely recharge the battery from a 24VDC input and a fuel gauge circuit to
monitor the charge remainingin the battery.
The radio PCA includes a 2.4Ghz radio and a rotary switch for setting the RF channel of the system (Figure 4).
Use a small screwdriver to rotate the switch until the arrow points to the desired RF channel number (16
channels available, 0h-Fh).
NOTE
All devices within the network must be on the same RF channel to operate correctly.
Each radio module is required to have a unique Modbus™ address. These addresses typically start at 01h and
continue sequentially for each Alarm Station in the gas detection system. The radio PCA includes a pair of
rotary switches to set this address (Figure 4). Refer to the Controller Manual for more information.
1.5RL4 Relay Module
The alarm station utilizes the Detcon RL4 I/O Module to control the alarms (Figure 5). The RL4 is required to
have a unique Modbus™ address. These addresses typically start at 80h and continue sequentially for each
Alarm Station in the gas detection system. Refer to the Controller Manual for more information. The alarm
station is wired for proper operation of Alarm 1 and Alarm 2, with Alarm 1 wired to the Strobe, and Alarm 2
wired to the Horn.

2.0Installation
NOTE: The wireless alarm station is a precision instrument and care should be taken when handling it.
1. The location for mounting the wireless alarm station should be carefully selected. Occasional access
to the unit will be necessary for battery replacement and maintenance. Mount the unit securely on a
wall or flat vertical surface using the provided mounting holes (hardware not provided).

2. The Battery pack for the unit is shipped separately, and should be installed before AC power is
applied. Unpack the battery pack and inspect it to ensure that there is no physical damage to the pack.
Locate the battery bracket and remove the bracket (remove the four 6-32 screws).

3. Place the battery in the bracket, and re-install the bracket in the unit, securing it with the 6-32 screws
removed earlier. Locate the small plug from the battery bracket, and plug it into the receptacle from
the transceiver.

5. The unit RXT-320 should be set to the correct RF Channel, and Modbus™ address for the alarm
station to communicate with the network. The RL4 Module should also have the correct Modbus™
address set for the RL4 to communicate properly with the controller.
6. When all connections have been made, and the RXT-320 Modbus™ and RF Channel have been
properly set, apply power to the unit.

3.0Operation
The SW-AV1-N4 Wireless Alarm Stations provides a strobe and a horn. The wireless alarm station is set to
respond to alarms from the controlling unit via the RXT-320 transceiver. The controller/wireless network has
independent control over the strobes and the Horn, and they will be activated when the appropriate alarm is
activated, via the RL4 Module.
The unit needs to have both the Transceiver and the RL4 configured before the unit will operate properly. To
do this the RL4 Modbus™ address must correspond to the setting of the controller, and the transceiver address
must be set properly for the transceiver to be recognized on the network. Refer to the Controller Manual for
more information.
The horn has up to 32 possible settings, for use in different configurations. The default settings of the horn are
factory set. To change the setting of the horn, remove the rear end of the horn, and set the dip switches
according to the Sound Signals Table.
